Second wave lineup announced for Wilderness 2015

First up, the roster of chefs is now even more superlative with the addition of Raymond Blanc OBE and Sweden’s Niklas Ekstedt alongside Angela Hartnett. Raymond Blanc, he needs little introduction. As one of the world’s finest chefs, his banquet will be highly anticipated indeed! From his role as Chef Patron of Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons, to presenting TV series such as Kew On a Plate and The Restaurant, Blanc’s influence on the culinary landscape is wide and far-ranging, and It is an honour indeed to welcome him to the Wilderness family in 2015. Hailing from Stockholm, Ekstedt has perfected his own culinary style, cooking totally without electricity or gas over open flames, with perfect smoke skills and hot coals as his tools of the trade. His Stockholm restaurant EKSTEDT was voted an impressive second in Zagat’s list of the best restaurants in the world in 2013 too, so this is a rare opportunity to taste Ekstedt’s food in the UK. As for

Music-wise, 2015 is proving to be damn near unbeatable, with some of the hottest up and coming artists all coming on board. 21 year old Icelandic sensation Asgeir will enchant crowds with his beautifully melancholic songs and unusual poetry, while, on the other end of the geographic spectrum, Sahara Desert native Bombino will dazzle with his particular brand of world music meets rock and roll soul. XL Recordings will also deliver an exhilarating one-two punch, with two of their hottest new artists in the form of Southport electronic virtuoso Lapsley and disco funk princeling Shamir, hailing from Las Vegas. Legendary dance pioneer Damien Lazarus & The Ancient Moons will be also be appearing at Cornbury Park this year. Rounding up the main stage are CC Smugglers, self-made showmen who worked their way up from young street performers to playing some of the biggest venues and festivals in Europe.

Meanwhile, in the Hidden Valley, a roll call of the finest DJ talent are bursting forth, with Hercules and Love Affair vocalist cum underground house producer Kim Ann Foxman leading the charge with her raw electronic music, along with a very rare set from the elusive and mythical DJ Harvey and the world renowned Tom Middleton, who has been redefining the musical landscape for about 25 years now. Also along for the ride are Amsterdam’s Rush Hour founder Antal, weaving house and techno spells with Afro and disco magic, Felix Dickinson, one of the champions of the burgeoning dance underground and partystarting Leeds duo PBR Streetgang, Also appearing are Mojo Filter, the production and remix incarnation of Ben Zaven Crane, championed by the likes of Todd Terje and Chemical Brothers for his relentless quest for new and unheard cosmic frequencies, funk/ soul/ disco enthusiast and LWR programme controller YOMS, and Ollie Keens, who has shared stages with everyone from Grandmaster Flash to Jackmaster.

For those who want a more relaxed vibe, there is an absolutely staggering and deliciously varied buffet of gorgeous folk bands on offer at the Travelling Folk Barn, from the Eastern European vibes of The Turbans, to the beat pop melodies of The Buffalo Skinners; the West Coast Americana of Goodnight Lenin to Canadian wunderkind Zachary Lucky. Every stripe and flavour of folk is catered for here, so dive in and enjoy the smorgasbord.

Elsewhere, on the Carousel Stage, Shangri-La’s Chris Tofu has curated a weird and wonderful roster of diverse musical marvels, including The Brass Funkeys, who draw from New Orleans’ rich musical history to create a hypnotic blend of gypsy, swing and Latin funk, Bristol’s six piece theatrical showband Carny Villains, Duffy Moonshine Big Band, who meld big band with modern basslines and chunky beats to stunning effect, astonishing 13 piece Balkan brass monolith Trans Siberian March Band, and the 60s indebted, pan-Atlantic musical stylings of Voodoo Love Orchestra, among others.

The Juke Joint, presented by Petersham Road, is set to transform Cornbury Park to a blues shaking paradise with a line-up stuffed to the gills with marquee acts from the UK blues scene. Big Joe Louis, whose collaborative history spans from Muddy Waters to Van Morrison, are sure to enthrall with their take on down-home Chicago blues. From Chicago to New Orleans, Piano auteur Diz and The Doormen evoke a potent gumbo of Barrel House, Rhythm and Blues and boogie-woogie, whilst Errol Linton’s raw Brixton inspired blues offers an invigorated guise on a defining genre.

Always bringing new venues, performances and formats to reinvent and reimagine the festival, Wilderness 2015 also sees an array of festival firsts, including the Saturday Night Spectacular still to come, a new collaboration with Village Productions The Clubhouse, the brand new fine arts venue – The Wilderness Art Studio, A new musical project to join the festival’s own orchestra – the Wilderness Choir and a fire walking ceremony.

Music and food aside, another thing Wilderness has always done well is tapping into a more intellectual vein as well, with the Talks and Debates on offer always a standout. To that end, apart from previously announced participants such as Sunday Papers Live, The Sunday Assembly, Guerrilla Archaeology, The V&A Talks and more, this year will also see participants such as GQ’s award winning editor Dylan Jones, Matthew Taylor, the Chief Executive of the RSA, historian and television presenter Dan Snow, comedian Dom Joly speaking on the ups and downs of celebrity life and Marigold Hotel author Deborah Moggach and famed philosopher John Lanchester. This is just a taster of the myriad speakers and thinkers to be announced in the coming weeks…

Equally essential at this multi-arts festival is the Theatre and Arts program, with one of the centerpieces being the V&A: From Woodstock to Wilderness. Curated by V&A Theatre and Performance curators Victoria Broackes and Geoffrey Marsh, who put together the singular David Bowie smash hit exhibition, this explores the cultural and political upheavals of the late 60s and the explosive sense of freedom of the era expressed in festivals, music, art, fashion, design, TV, film, photography, performance and literature. Then there’s also the Wilderness Orchestra, who, on their return engagement will be playing live orchestra of film scores, and Shlomo’s Vocal Orchestra will also be present and correct to blow festivalgoers’ minds. Additionally, The Artful Badger will be back with more animal antics in the forest, and concert guitarist Richard Durrant will also be on hand with his richly romantic, truly virtuosic guitar playing which breaks all musical boundaries.

Throw in a whole host of family activities including Rhubarb Theatre and Cardboard Kingdom, and workshops focusing on costumes and wild creatures, as well as Wellbeing goings-on like Meditation with Headspace, Massage and Facials with Neal’s Yard Remedies products, Paddle Board Yoga, Hot Pod Yoga, workshops and more, and you have a glorious festival getaway from it all that will truly feel like an entirely unique experience like no other.

Lost and Found Festival 2015 Review

Annie Mac has become nothing short of an inspirational, ground-breaking tour de force over the past few years. When we heard that she would be taking the AMP team out to the Mediterranean island of Malta over the Easter weekend to launch their very own Lost And Found Festival, we knew we had to be there.  With a line-up that reads like a who’s-who of the music scene right now, the promise of sun, boat parties and beats, no wonder it enticed an abundance of clubbers and DJs alike.

You can get to Malta from most of the major UK airports, in comparison to other European dance festivals getting to Lost and Found festival was relatively easy.

We stayed in one of the main hotels recommended from the festival website, just a stones throw from the daytime party location Café Del Mar at St Paul’s Bay. Being held so early in the season it was apparent that this sleepy island wasn't ready for what was about to hit it – 7,000 British partygoers were joining us, imminently.

Friday

Café Del Mar seemed to be the windiest bit of the island, even in the sunshine. None the less that did not stop the ravers who were ready to party at all costs.  Friday kicked off with a pretty wild pool party hosted by Toddla TNorth Base, DRS, Jamz Supernova and Mele joined Toddla on the decksBetween them they pounded out sounds of house, DnB, grime and bass. Toddla took things up a notch, giving the crowd a pure injection of energy-induced dirty beats. Cisk time (local Maltese beer) was flowing nicely as the hazy sun set in the early evening. If this pool party was anything to go by, then the rest of the weekend was bound to be pretty spectacular.

We caught the festival shuttle service, which took around 20 minutes to get from St Pauls to Ta’ Qali. We arrived at the main festival site around 10pm, which was far too early, at least it gave us the chance to get our bearings and mooch around the festival site. Numero Uno is a small site which resembled Ibiza’s zoo project, a warren of stages, VIP viewing platforms and bars. Palm trees, pink flamingos and neon lights created quite a magical atmosphere.  The chill out area provided the masses a space to recharge their batteries and get some nourishment.

As night fell, it turned quite cold and us unprepared Brits got caught out in vest and shorts. Fortunately the hoodies at the merchandise tent provided us with some much needed warmth. The evenings were a more serious affair with a calibre of DJs to match. Neon cocktail glasses flanked the Tropicana stage, which saw a line up of Oneman, Julio Bashmore, and Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs. Rising geordie star Patrick Topping opened proceedings on the Palace stage, followed by Hot Since 82, the Martinez Brothers and finally closing with Hot Creations Heavy weight Jamie Jones.

Julio Bashmore

As we caught the shuttle bus back to our accommodation we chatted to a few of the partygoers. It seemed most peoples highlight from the evening was a storming set UKG legend DJ EZ. EZ opened with Sticky & Ms Dynamite’s infamous Booo!, with a surprise that not only got the crowd wild, but also made Annie herself go nuts. Most commented on how well the event was organised, which one would expect from the team that run WHP.

Saturday

Early Saturday morning we headed down to the Annie Mac All Stars boat party, all aboard for the rave on the waves. Most of the crowd were surprised to see their favourite artists in such a close proximity, and Annie was hounded for non-stop selfies. Redlight was the surprise guest, who went B2B with Annie, Monki, Melé and Toddla T, they blasted us with track after track on the three-hour boat ride.

It was great to see the Maltese bar staff letting their hair down and joining in with the merriment. Toby Tea (the white tiger mascot) who appeared all over the festival over the weekend, getting fist pumped into the air by the crowd.  The boat party even witnessed an engagement, as reveler Ian got down on one knee in front of everyone and proposed to his girlfriend Victoria. Of course she said yes… #theloveboat

Annie Mac and Today Tea

Better prepared and wrapped in several layers, we were ready for whatever Saturday night had to throw at us. Torn between the four stages we caught sets from Barely Legal, My Nu Leng, Doorly, Ten Walls, Skream, Artwork, Jackmaster, Duke Dumont, Cajmere, with MK nicely closing the palace stage with an immense set. Redlight was one the standout set for us, already a fan of his music, he dropped house classics as well as his own 9TS, Lost in your love and new track Gold Teeth.

Sunday

The crowds didn’t start filtering in until much later in the day, which meant that Monki, Shadow Child, B-traits didn’t get the crowds they deserved.

Taking the main stage just before sunset was base-heavy house DJ Hannah Wants. Her set at Lost and Found was unsurprisingly a hit; mixing classic ‘90s garage tunes with her own contemporary bass and house beats. The crowd went berserk when she dropped Faithless’ Insomnia. Her hit Rhymes went down just as well with raised hands to the sky for the track's bass heavy drop.

Hannah Wants

Over the course of the night we saw sets from Catz n’Dogs, Paul Woolford, Kerri Chandler, Flat White, Tiga, Green Velvet and Haitian-Canadian electronic musician, producer and DJ Kaytranada. Leading on to the penultimate act of the day Heidi that set the crowds ready for the headline act.

Annie entered the booth and greeted chanting crowds with a croaky voice. The weekend had clearly taken its toll. She didn’t care; the Annie Mac party faithful was here to dance. She opened with a belter Après Chicago, followed by a plethora of electronic bassy bangers. Her set contained highlights from Waze & Odyssey, Grum, Ten Walls, Adam F (Eats Everything Remix) and stand out track of the weekend for myself and others was Melé’s superb drum-ladden Ambience.

Annie hyped her audience into a frenzy as she jumped on the speakers draped in an Irish flag to Dumont’s The Giver, the crowd chanting “Annie, Annie, Annie F**cking Mac” their hands illuminated and a sea of phones recording the moment. Confetti cannons exploded for the grand finale and she played out to Whitney Houston’s I Wanna Dance with Somebody, the crowd lapping up every minute of the loved-up vibes. Annie put on an immense performance with dance-floor hit after hit, showing us exactly why she is the UK’s premiere live, and radio DJ.

Annie Mac

We’ve been to quite a few festivals, but this definitely felt like a game changer. We felt incredibly lucky to be part of something so special, and to be welcomed with open arms by the Maltese. Lost and found far outweighed my expectations. It was beguiling, bewitching, brilliant and proved an unforgettable experience. Not a bad way to spend an Easter, is it!

But don’t forget, you can always enjoy the home comforts of the Women's Institute and the Solace Tea Tent, or relax with a craft beer or a glass at the Observatory Cocktail Bar.

Experience the excitement of adventure, going off-piste and leaving the festival site for an hour or two of extreme invigoration with Surf lessons, mountain-boarding, coasteering, rock climbing, paddle-boarding and mountain biking. Or take in the sights with a trip on our brand new Caravanserai inspired Land Train, and stimulate the senses cuddling the fluffy guys with some ‘Llama Karma’.

If you’re bringing the little explorers, there’s a dedicated Kids Area that will host Big Top Mania circus workshops, a bouncy castle, the soft play area, Lizzie's Way, a climbing wall, and magicians! Get involved with a variety of crafts, including woodcraft, handicrafts, textile craft, and knitting.

A hotbed of gatherings, Slow Motion will be a bewitching haven of Night Parades and Fire Pits, while the Lost & Found crew will be living it up, bringing the party to the adventure playground. The Ambient Forest will have an extravagance of Amphitheatre performances, Installations, and Close Encounters, with plenty of serene hammocks for you to loll and laze in. And, of course, there will be plenty of stirring music, too, with our brand new mesmerising Kaleidoscope stage, replete with bespoke animations, revealing a psychedelia-steeped soundtrack of soul, funk, space age electronica, beat poetry, literary happenings and a pleasingly wonky disco finale each night.

A chance to cultivate good habits or sustain your regime, Slow Motion is an expedition for the body and soul.
