Suede and Frank Turner to headline Kendal Calling

Set in the stunning surroundings of UK's Lake District, Kendal Calling return for 2014 with a bang!  The first lineup announcement features headliners Suede and Frank Turner.

Joining the headliners will be hip hop legends De La Soul, Miles Kane, Happy Mondays, 2manyDjs, Andy C, Radio One's Zane Lowe, Bondax, Goldie, Razorlight, Clean Bandit and many more.

2014’s first headliner Suede are one of the most revered British bands of the last 25 years with Brett Anderson and co racking up a host of much lauded indie singles and albums. After a hiatus the band returned in 2010 and released the critically and commercially acclaimed album ‘Bloodsports’ in 2013.  This is a band once again riding on the crest of wave and the first headliner to be announced with more due to follow imminently.

Frank Turner’s anthemic folk-punk has seen him rise to become one of the country’s biggest musical artists of the last few years, accruing a large and devoted following and placing him firmly at the forefront of the new guitar renaissance in the UK.  His five albums have given him an enviable body of work and Frank Turner is undoubtedly one of the most powerful live performers around. Frank has a real love affair with Kendal Calling having played twice before and has risen through the ranks to secure a well-deserved and much requested headline slot with his band The Sleeping Souls.

The much anticipated Hip Hop Legends slot this year goes to hip hop pioneers De La Soul. This slot is as much a part of Kendal Calling folklore as the fancy dress theme and the Real Ale tent and after last year’s blistering performance by Public Enemy the From The Fields team are delighted to have secured a more laid back performance from the daisy age, ‘3 Feet High and Rising’ legends who celebrate 25 years in the game in 2014.

Miles Kane is a man noted as much for his sharp suits and dress sense as his angular music and lyrics and this most modern of pop stars will make the short journey from Liverpool to the lakes.

Happy Mondays are Madchester royalty and in frontman Shaun Ryder possess and unlikely national treasure.  Their set will be a hugely anticipated affair as fans gather to hear seminal baggy anthems such as ‘Step On’, ‘Kinky Afro’, ‘Hallelujah’ and a host more as the Mondays baggy swagger engulfs the Lake District.

The Glow Tent is a haven for lovers of the very best in electronic music and the line-up for 2014 is the best yet.  David and Stephen Dewaele are famous worldwide as both Soulwax and2manydjs who's album "As Heard On Radio Soulwax Pt. 1" completely revolutionized the dance music landscape in the early 2000s, for its imaginative mixture of artist and genres from all eras. 2manydj’s are widely acknowledged as one of the most innovative acts on the planet and their mash up mayhem will have Kendal Calling in raptures.

Other confirmed acts include RAM Records founder and drum & bass don Andy C, Radio 1’s new music head honcho Zane Lowe, electro duo and local heroes Bondax with and all-star cast of b2b sessions, Metalheadz royalty Goldie, MJ Cole and a host of other swashbuckling turntable evangelists.
Zane Lowe

Other confirmations include Razorlight with their arsenal of alternative anthems, Brits Critics Choice winner and keyboard pounding singer songwriter Tom Odell and recent number 1 singles acts and electronic collective Clean Bandit who are one of the most exciting breakthrough acts in the UK right now.  Newton Faulkner’s unique, percussive guitar playing and emotive songs are sure to provide one of the weekend’s biggest sing-alongs while Gorgon City get ready for your love and bring their booty shaking bass to the Lakes.

Other exciting acts confirmed to perform include indie stalwarts Athlete, breakthrough indie rockers Breton, Rudimental collaborator Ella Eyre, undefinable musical guru and champion tea drinker Mr Scruff.  Many more acts have been confirmed to play with hundreds more set to join them in August in arguably the most beautiful festival site in the UK.

This year’s fancy dress theme is Kendal Calling Goes Beyond The Stars as the festival once again becomes a mecca for culture vultures and party people.

NEW for 2014 for Thursday night revellers, Craig Charles Funk and Soul Club take over featuring a hand picked line up by Craig himself. Thursday will feature Chai Wallah’s and the Real Ale festival will be open for pre festival shenanigans!

Katy B and Neon Jungle added to Sundown Festival lineup

More top artists have been confirmed for Sundown Festival 2014, which is fast becoming one of the UK’s best live-music events to end the summer festival season, from Friday 29 to Sunday 31 August

Dubstep diva and NME Award winner Katy B has just been confirmed as joining the line-up to perform Saturday’s main stage, like the previously announced Zane Lowe, before headliners Chase & Status and Tinie Tempah top the Sundown billing.

Top ten singles chart new-comers and Braveheart singers Neon Jungle have also been confirmed. The British four-piece girl group will take to Sunday’s main stage, performing ahead of Clean Bandit and Brit Award Nominees John Newman and headliner Ellie Goulding.

Elsewhere, details of Sundown’s dance-orientated Stage 2 have emerged, with House specialists Defected Records hosting the Saturday night, with DJs MK, Breach and Sam Divine already confirmed, while drum and bass label RAM Records take over for the Sunday, with Andy C, Wilkinson and Calyx & Teebee confirmed so far.

Sundown Festival 2014 will play host to more acts, across more stages, to be announced soon and tickets are expected to be in high demand after Sundown audiences grew from 15,000 people at the 2011 event to 38,000 people in 2013, when all camping tickets sold-out months before the festival kicked off.

Sundown Festival spokesperson, Dion Clements comments: “After announcing the headliners last week and following Sundown Festival’s rapid growth into one of the UK’s best live music events to end the summer season, we promised more big artists would join the line-up, so we’re very pleased to welcome Katy B and Neon Jungle. Along with Chase & Status, Tinie Tempah, Ellie Goulding, John Newman, Zane Lowe and Clean Bandit, the initial line-up on offer to Sundown festivalites is shaping up very nicely”.

Dion adds “With our unique mixed offering of the top urban, pop and dance acts, Sundown caters for a range of tastes in the music spectrum, bringing together a diverse music audience for one huge weekend”.

Tinie Tempah and Ellie Goulding to headline Sundown Festival 2014

This year Norfolk's Sundown Festival brings some of the biggest artists of the UK to the stage this summer with headliner's Tinie Tempah and Ellie Goulding leading the way.

Tinie Tempah headlines Sundown for the first time, with the We Bring the Stars Out, Children of the Sun and Lover Not a Fighter singer leading the line-up on Saturday’s main stage.

Chase & Status remain one of the most in-demand Sundown acts and are confirmed to perform tracks from their new album along with a mix of their hits, and BBC Radio 1’s own Zane Lowe, renowned for his masterful and epic live sets, will also perform on Saturday’s main stage line-up.

As one of the most versatile and eclectic female singers in the UK today, Brit-Award nominee Ellie Goulding will headline the main stage on Sunday 31 August. The Starry EyedHow Long Will I Love You and Burn singer has not only enjoyed huge solo success, but has also landed hits in collaboration with a number of Sundown artists, and is welcomed to Sundown for the first time.

Fellow Brit-Award nominee John Newman is also confirmed to make his first Sundown performance on Sunday’s main stage after becoming one of the hottest artistes to have soared into the public psyche with the #1 hit singles Feel the Love and Love Me Again.

Clean Bandit, who recently landed their first #1 UK single with Rather Be, are the third Sunday main stage act to be confirmed and are set to be one of this year’s stand-out revelations.

Sundown Festival spokesperson, Dion Clements comments: “Sundown Festival has enjoyed incredible success in quickly establishing itself as one of the UK’s best live music events to end the summer season. Tinie Tempah, Chase & Status and Zane Lowe are all like established Sundown royalty, while Ellie, John and Clean Bandit offer Sundown festivalites the chance to see them perform here for the first time”

Dion adds “With our unique mixed offering of the top urban, pop and dance acts, Sundown caters for a massive range of tastes in the music spectrum, bringing together a diverse music audience for one huge weekend

NASS Festival 2013 Review

Unlike a lot of music festivals; such as Reading or Download, NASS festival doesn’t entirely revolve around the bands or artists that are performing. A large base of its popularity comes from its Extreme Sports involvement, with competitions for skateboarders and BMXer’s taking place throughout both Friday and Saturday. Additionally, freestyle motocross demonstrations along with rollerblading were being eagerly watched by many at different venues scattered around the site.

Friday

As the first full day of the festival started, the intense heat brought out everyone from their tents and caravans onto the walk paths of the festival, the streets were packed with teenagers dressed in vests and shorts trying to resist the extreme heat of the day.

The first highly popular act for Friday’s line-up where the English four piece rock band from Essex: We Are The Ocean. The band put forward a confident performance involving such popular songs as ‘Bleed’ and ‘Follow What You Need’. Lead singer, Liam Cromby, engaged well with the audience; which despite not being huge in numbers seemed impressed and entertained throughout the set.

Next up, the Youtube originated sensation George Watsky, best known through his video ‘Pale kid raps fast’ took the stage. He displayed confidence and talent through his remarkably fast paced rapping which wowed the audience, arriving in numbers slightly larger than those who attended We Are The Ocean. As Watsky’s performance went on, he later decided to interact with one particular member of the audience by singing Happy Birthday to them, this gesture was received well as the crowd cheered and encouraged him on. George then went on to perform a deeply emotional song of his known as ‘Tiny Growing Screens Part 2’ which seemed to connect with the audience immensely, the use of Watsky’s rapping mixed with the powerful singing of his female partner fused well together to create a highly entertaining performance.

After a short break, the well-received DJ’s MONSTA took the stage, exciting the audience with their blend of dubstep and electronic dance-like music. Their performance was heard throughout NASS with their overwhelming bassy music which succeeded in attracting a relatively large crowd. As their performance went on, hundreds of supporters turned up, highlighting on the popularity of their performance.

After a lengthy performance by MONSTA, perhaps the second most anticipated act of the night were about to perform. Hadouken! With no great surprise, attracted a huge crowd, the largest so far, performing with extreme confidence and class. The lead singer, James Smith alongside his girlfriend and the other three members of the band created an intensely exciting atmosphere through their music, which everyone seemed to enjoy! As the act went on, James ordered the main crowd to form the ‘wall of death’ which the crowd obliged into doing, only adding to the craze of the moment.

As the crowd gathered in anticipation of the Headliner of Fridays events, Katy B took the stage; she undoubtedly brought in the largest crowd out of all of Fridays acts and definitely gave a performance worthy of applause, which the audience did, many times. With the involvement of the backup dancers being introduced by Katy, the crowd felt more connected with her, as well as her shout out to ‘all the ladies in here’ generating a huge bombardment of screams from the crowd. Her performance seemed to not only keep the audience on their toes, but also up in the air as multiple giant inflatable balls where launched across the crowd. She closed her set with her most recognised song, also her first single: ‘Katy On A Mission’ which got the whole crowd singing along. Needless to say, the atmosphere was amazing and every member of the audience involved seemed to have a brilliant time.

Saturday

Saturday started much the same as Friday did…with an intense amount of Heat. In fact the weather for the entire festival was superb as there wasn’t a drop in the sky, although I’m sure by the end of a rave with Skepta or Zane Lowe some people would have been begging for a cold shower to come down from the sky.

The hugely popular English rapper Skepta kicked off the evening with an intense and powerful performance, dressed in his all white clothing he stood out from the background, creating an illuminating appearance. Skepta’s voice was clear and powerful as he shook the ground of NASS getting everyone up on their feet and involved.

Next up, the British rock band from Cardiff Kids In Glass Houses rocked the stage with such popular tunes as ‘Sunshine’ ‘Undercover Lover’ and ‘Matters At All’. Their supporters came together to create a great atmosphere as Aled and his band rocked on through the evening.

The extremely popular Radio one presenter from New Zealand Zane Lowe came on and immediately summoned everyone to their feet as he shouted ‘If you’re sitting in a tent then what the F#*k are you doing?!’. As his set began, a huge crowd gathered, one of a similar size to Hadouken! His performance included his own DJ set as well as remix’s of club classics, for example he did a cover of one of Pendulums songs, which brought a huge cheer of recognition from the crowd. It seemed that all those involved in this experience had an exciting and unforgettable time.

Finally, as the darkness started to loom around the site, the concluding headlining act was about to hit the stage, who, by extreme measures, attracted the largest crowd as the main stage was packed with people. Before he made is appearance, the DJ paid tribute to such other rappers as 2 Pac and biggie smalls; demanding that everyone put ‘one finger in the air’ and then ‘turn them ones into two’s’ in tribute of 2 Pac. As the night went on and Nas made it to the stage there was a huge eruption from the crowd as he entered. The atmosphere was intense and full of supporters eagerly cheering him on. Once again, as during Katy B, huge inflatable balls bounced across the top of the crowd, just to add to the already intensely exciting atmosphere. The performance could be heard throughout the entire site, it was safe to say that Nas gave the people of NASS what they wanted, an incredible performance.

Nas

To sum up, the performances at NASS, whether they be from a skateboarder, BMXer or whether they’re headlining on the main stage; the quality and enjoyment you get from each and every performer creates an environment which you don’t ever want to leave, the effort of these performers this year made NASS 2013 a festival to remember, so don’t miss it next year!
