SW4 2014 lineup increases with Mistajam, Mike Skinner and more

We here at the Summer Festival Guide are excited to announce the newest addtions to this years South West Four which include Mistajam, Mike Skinner, MJ Cole, Friction and more!  Read on for more information.

As one of electronic music’s most instantly recognizable and influential charactersMistaJam will make his way to South West Four for the very first time to host the next edition of his bubbling multi-genre melting potSpeakerbox. His fearless approach of mixing humour and musical risks has propelled him through the ranks of BBC 1Xtra and Radio 1, resulting in him being widely considered as the nation’s ambassador for fresh new music.  As one of theleading pioneers of the UK’s crossover climate, his ear for undiscovered music and rising talent is second to none. Having expressed that musical boundaries are clearly of no interestexpect the unexpected as MistaJam gets ready to host the next episode of Speakerbox at South West Four on Sunday 24th August.

SW4 is pleased to announce one of the finest back-to-back battles in all of our ten year history. As two of the urban scene’s most inspiring figures, we can confirm that Mike Skinner and MJ Cole will go head-to-head for the greatestof festival performances. Through releasing records such as ‘Sincere’MJ Cole’s intricate, heart-wrenching garage productions has kept him at the forefront of a continuously evolving market. Lining up alongside him is the man behind the musical phenomenonThe Streets. Continuing to push boundaries as a musician, Mike’s DJ sets vary from house to old school hip-hop right through to drum and bass, and therefore it is safe to say that Skinner never fails toignite the party spirit. As the perfect festival addition, this is a special one-off performance that you cannot afford to miss.

Oxide & Neutrino are London’s original DJ and MC duo and subsequently form one of 2014’s most eagerly anticipated debut performances. As former members of the infamous So Solid Crew, their relentless energy and on-stage chemistry make them two of the most electrifying live performers of today. With timeless classics ‘Bound 4 Da Reload’ and ‘No Good 4 Me’ sure to bring Clapham Common alive, there is no doubt that the boys from South London are preparing to deliver a very special performance on their home soil. With the dynamic duo bringing it back to where it all began, this marks a landmark occasion and one of the weekend’s standout highlights.

If you were lucky enough to witness the utter carnage created on our main stage by Friction in 2013, then you’ll know exactly why we’ve invited him back for more. As one of the most revered names in the game thanks to hisastonishing three deck wizardry and extraordinary technical ability, we can now confirm the official return of the Shogun Audio boss. Boasting one of the most extensive back catalogues in drum and bassFriction has been associated with every major label imaginable including RAMHospitality and MetalheadzSW4 get ready for anarchy and disorder as we welcome Friction back to Clapham Common.

Hailing from the UK’s electronic music mecca of BristolMy Nu Leng have established themselves as one of the most creative and exciting duos of today. As core members of the Black Butter crew, the pair have mastered a soundthat is simply impossible to pigeonhole by drawing influence from the entire electronic spectrum and constantly shifting between pitch-layered vocals and bass-heavy rumbles. With further remix duties catering for Clean Bandit,Naughty Boy and Rudimental on top of the release of their ‘Masterplan’ EP earlier this year; we cannot wait to hand My Nu Leng their SW4 debut.

From the electronic breeding ground that is CanadaB.Traits boasts one of the most original sounds on the scene. By incorporating the key elements of breakbeatjungledubstepdrum & bassreggaehousegarage and everything in between, B.Traits is the ultimate festival performer. With her weekly Tuesday night radio show on Radio 1 showcasing the finest emerging UK bass music, her sets are always bursting with vibrantforward-thinking future music. Adopting a mix and match approach that would normally spell disaster for the lesser skilled hands, the female half of Digital Soundboy is undoubtedly one of the world’s most exciting female talents making this one up-front performance one you can’t afford to miss.

Miami based hip-hop leaning duo GTA have certified themselves as one of today’s most interesting and unique electronic acts. Made up of Matt and Julio, the duo is armed with endless creativity, a tireless work ethic and a fierce dedication to their craft. Refusing to be held to a particular sound, the boundary-breakers have taken USA by storm and are well on their way to conquering Europe. This has led to a permanent queue of support and in-turn remix requests from the highest orderDeadmau5Wolfgang GartnerMichael Woods and Clockwork to name a few. SW4 get ready for GTA.

As one of the freshest young talents currently rising through the electronic ranksKarma Kid has quickly become one of the most promising prospects in UK bass music. From bursting onto the scene with a series of original releases on Just UsRoche Music and L2S Recordings to a stellar remix of Ben Pearce’s ‘What I Might Do’, Kidnap Kid is clearly one of the leading innovators of the new school. Playing South West Four for what is sure to be thefirst of many times, 2014 looks set to be a dominating year for the 19 year old. You can find out exactly why as he lands at SW4 on Sunday 24th August.

Boardmasters 2013 Stages Announced

Boardmasters has already announced a host of incredible acts for the August 2013 line up, but the fun doesn’t stop there with house, electro, dubstep and drum n bass on the cards at the recently revealed Unleashed and Marley Point stages.

If Basement Jaxx and The Vaccines aren’t enough for festival-goers to get crazy to then the newly named Unleashed stage ought to do the job.

At the helm, dubstep innovator, producer and legend Benga will be delivering a hedonistic cocktail of dubstep and drum & bass to all those partying in this epic arena. With two successful albums under his belt, producing for Katy B, working on a new Magnetic Man album and a BBC Radio 1 show with partner Skream, you don’t get much bigger than Benga.

Joining the madness on the Unleashed stage, producer extraordinaire Redlight will be smashing up the dance floor with summer vibes, heavy beats and hyped club tracks. Having previously toured with the likes of Disclosure, Rudimental and Magnetic man, Redlight will once again be in good company on this bass warrior stage.

The tasty line up doesn’t stop there with BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra presenter MistaJam and his special project “MistaJam presents Speakerbox” and electronic pioneers Simian Mobile Disco joining the list of awesome acts raising the roof on the Unleashed stage.

Next up in this already immense billing is bona fide legend, American hip-hop musician and DJ Grandmaster Flash. One of the pioneers of hip-hop and the inventor of the cross fader and the Quick Mix Theory, his Boardmasters performance is guaranteed to be like no other.

Over on the cliff edge, the House of Marley returns for 2013 with what was one of the most popular areas at Boardmasters 2012. With a whole host of ferocious acts on the line up, The Marley Point will once again pull in the crowds with relaxing and subtle beats during the day, smashing out some of the best music and entertainment by night.

Kicking off the Marley Point party is one of the UK’s most buzzed-about house acts Dusky with tracks from their fresh new EP Nobody Else and dropping tracks from last year’s massive Flo Jam.

Keeping the party vibing, electronic duo Bondax will also be taking to the Marley stage with their upbeat melodies and 90’s house style tunes including the phenomenal Gold and It’s You guaranteeing hands-in-the-air moments throughout the night.

Another Marley highlight includes Rinse FM’s garage and house whizz kid T.Williams. One of the driving forces behind UK house label Deep Teknologi, T.Williams continues to rise through the UK house and bass ranks and will be stepping up to the plate at Boardmasters with some seriously deep tracks.

Watch these house, drum n bass and dubstep marvel's smash it whilst taking in the jaw dropping views on offer at the Marley Point stage.

South West Four add Erick Morillo, Soul II Soul and more

For almost two decades Erick Morillo has been one of the most in demand DJs and producers on the planet. The Columbian-come-American’s career began in the early 90’s and since then he has gone on to play every principal city on the map, including major residencies in Ibiza for the past fifteen years. In 1997 he launched his own label ‘Subliminal Records’ and has since been able to propel the imprint to international prominence. In 2012 the status that Morillo holds in his homeland was exemplified further when a street was named after him in Union City. We’ve been lucky for Erick to play SW4 several times, in fact he was our first ever headliner back in 2004. We are delighted to have this living legend back for our 10th Anniversary…It just wouldn’t be the same without him.

Erick Morillo

"If anyone knows how hard it is to maintain a brand, party and event, it’s me. So congratulations to SW4 on their Tenth Anniversary! I always love coming to London to play SW4 in the summertime. The heavens opened on us last year, but it was still an amazing party and vibe. Let's pray for some summer loving this year!" Erick Morillo

Following in the footsteps of other seminal bands to play South West Four over the years such as Public Enemy and Salt N Pepa, our 10th Anniversary welcomes true London musical royalty. Celebrating their 25th Anniversary in their home city at SW4, we are delighted to showcase Soul II Soul featuring the magnificent Caron Wheeler. Reviewing their list of accolades, it’s easy to see why Jazzie B’s band is such an inspired choice. Having won two Grammy Awards and sold millions of records worldwide, Jazzie also has been given keys to an incredible seven cities in the US, including LA and New York. In America there’s even a Soul II Soul day, whilst back in Blighty Jazzie has been awarded an OBE for his services to music. Having formed in 1988, they burst on to the scene soon after with their massive hit singles ‘Keep on Movin’ and ‘Back to Life’, with the latter being featured in the Opening Ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics. This year we celebrate 25 years of Soul II Soul at our 10th Anniversary, making our already stellar line up even more mouth watering.

“Looking forward to playing south of the river to a quality crowd! A happy face, a thumpin' bass, for a loving race :-)” Jazzie B (Soul II Soul)

Benji B & Deviation Strings is up there amongst the most interesting collaborations of the past decade. Led by multi-instrumentalist and composer Grant Windsor, the sixteen piece orchestra will take to the South West Four main stage to perform specially arranged scores accompanied by Benji B on the decks. This live performance is taking electronic music to the next level as the orchestra and Benji beautifully blend together tracks, as the instruments add another dramatic dimension to create a sound of epic proportions. The Radio1 DJs’ own Deviation nights have grown to become one of the most important and well-respected brands in British nightlife, with a simple manifesto of “good sound, good music, good people and no compromise”. Quite simply this is an incredible SW4 spectacle not to be missed.

UK disco darlings Crazy P have been making some of the most important and relevant beats for the best part of fifteen years. With one of the best live shows in dance music, their roots are planted firmly in the late 90’s club scene. Their performance is a blistering exhibition of raw energy, infecting the crowd with their disco stylings. Often imitated but never duplicated, their extensive catalogue harks back memories of a more groovy, funk-laden era and 2013 sees a new album on the horizon. Make sure you catch their full live show at South West Four this year, as we party in true style. Time to get into boogie mode.

Crazy P

SW4 favourite Friction is a DJ and producer that holds extremely high esteem in the drum & bass world. Described by Pete Tong as “one of the big dogs”, he holds court in the D&B Hall of Fame thanks to his inauguration at the 2011 Drum & Bass Arena Awards. He has released music on the genre’s most respected labels including Hospital and Metalheadz and in 2004 founded Shogun Audio which pushed his name into the limelight. Since then he has gone on to become the new face of Radio 1’s flagship drum & bass show, a slot that was previously occupied by none other than Fabio & Grooverider. Having destroyed the RAM Records Arena at SW4 2012, Friction takes to the main stage this year alongside three very special guests; P Money, Scrufizzer and Linguistics.

Russell Whyte’s jittery, caffeine injected, upbeat style of music is without doubt the sound of the underground right now. Rustie’s in your face, anything goes, yet sometimes brash approach of mixing hip-hop and pop, with dubstep and trap is what’s making Rustie so in demand. In 2010 he signed to Warp Records, who released his now classic debut album ‘Glass Swords’ in 2011. In 2013 his thunderous new offering ‘Slasherr’ is causing a storm worldwide through Glasgow based label Numbers. Take note SW4, because this young Scot has only just got started.

Lancaster’s finest Bondax descend onto the Clapham Common threshold this year for their first ever South West Four appearance. Expect soulful, smooth bass and glorious sounding synths combined with R&B flavours, to make an irresistible cocktail that melts in your ears. Los Angeles born RL Grime is in his own words “reshaping electronic production”. His melodically influenced flavour is connecting the roots of southern hip hop with the new age of electronic dance music. His alter-ego Clockwork has gained him the respect of several big name DJs, whilst his RL Grime project is shaping up to be no different. His track ‘Trap On Acid’ gained support from Diplo and A-Trak, as well as Flosstradamus and Baauer, who will both join him at South West Four this year. RL Grime’s trap ideals are dictating our understanding of what its means to be a 21st century producer, as he holds status as one of the hottest properties on the planet.

Sussex born Kove has been causing a stir in the bass world over the past twelve months. Ram Records head honcho and SW4 resident Andy C picked up his track ‘Iodine’ in 2012 which quickly became a staple in the sets of many of the scene’s biggest names. Since then, Kove has recently signed exclusively with Chase & Status’ MTA Records and is increasingly in demand as a DJ throughout Europe. Making his debut appearance at SW4, this hotly tipped youngster will go on great things, we are certain of that.

GORGON CITY

The stage is set for Gorgon City to take over the world. Off the back of their first EP ‘Real’ they have already gained the support of Diplo, Annie Mac and Rinse FM. The title track featuring the soulful Yasmin has even been getting daytime play on Radio1, whilst ‘Thor’ is an equally devastating affair. Individually, Foamo and RackNRuin who make up Gorgon City are both well respected producers and DJs in their own right and their distinct stylings can be heard throughout their own studio efforts. Inspired by a vast selection of music genres, growing up in north London has clearly influenced the pair with their sound an amalgamation of house, garage and deep bass. Their first EP was released by the irrepressible Black Butter Records, home of the chart topping Rudimental and with new music in the pipeline, the future is certainly bright for Gorgon City.
