Eric Prydz only London show for 2013 at SW4

A total of twenty acts have been announced for SW4 2013 so far, ranging from UK festival exclusives in the form of Armin van Buuren and Boys Noize [Live], to rare UK performances from Marco Carola, Solomun and Nicky Romero, to never before seen back-to-backs like that between 2 step legends Todd Edwards and EZ. With a further 50 acts still to come, including the majority of our headline DJs, South West Four’s 10th Anniversary is all set to be the biggest celebration of dance music London has ever witnessed. The first of these headline DJs playing the Sunday can now be announced. A man who has enjoyed an intricate love affair with SW4 and a firm favourite of all in attendance. That man is Eric Prydz.

Eric Prydz and South West Four have an immense history together. Prydz used to live in Clapham and his huge productions have been the soundtrack to the festival for many years. This was highlighted more than ever last year with the release of ‘SW4’, another dancefloor destroying studio effort which has since gone down as one of the finest tracks Eric has ever released.

Eric Prydz

As one of the most in demand DJs of the last decade, Eric’s own brand of uplifting piano based house registers him as one of the most popular and accomplished acts to ever grace our sacred stages. This will be the fourth time Eric has played SW4 in the past five years. In fact one of our posters would look peculiar without his name brazen across it.

Last year the Grammy nominated producer showed yet again why his polished performances remain one of clubland’s great wonders. Thousands squeezed into the Together arena to witness one of the finest and most infectious sets of SW4 2012. Since then the South West Four favourite has relocated to the States to commence a critically acclaimed ‘Black Dice’ residency in Las Vegas, whilst his monthly EPIC podcast has been essential listening. He returns to South West Four for his only London show of 2013, making this his most important and significant Clapham Common performance to date.

Deer Shed Festival Machines theme deconstructed

Over the weekend of19th – 21st July, the Baldersby Park in North Yorkshire will be taken over with a magnitude of mechanical offerings. This family festival is set to be awash with activities, demonstrations, talks and workshops from technology wizards such as Paul Granjon and international student organisation Robo Gals, as well as live coding, 3D printingScrapheap Challenge and oodles more quirky, insightful and ingenious machine related shenanigans!

Deer Shed Festival are delighted to have Paul Granjon as their MACHINES tent main attraction! Paul is interested in the co-evolution of humans and machines and builds all manner of fascinating contraptions, some of which are pretty bonkers! Paul will be demonstrating his homemade robotics accompanied by songs and illustrated reflections on the current state of cybernetic technology. Showing that the girls can be technology guru’s too the Robogals will be running hands-on robotic workshops engaging participants in a range of engineering topics in a way that is fun, creative and inspiring.

Other interactive and informative workshops include; Paul Harter’s Printcraft – The wonders of modern technology are often equally as baffling as they are wondrous, and 3D printing has to be the latest development which can proudly wear that crown! Paul Harter has developed a way to make the processes easily accessible by writing a script to create printable 3D models from within the ever popular Minecraft game. Paul will be demonstrating the witchcraft of 3D printing and wowing the kids and adults alike with this new form of magic!

Always ones to encourage full participation Deer Shed have set up an abundance of workshops and activities for festival goers to test their technological talents and creative construction capabilities! Scrapheap Challenge – just like the TV show, Deer Shed are challenging their festival folks to build a water worthy craft out of junk powered by human or mechanical means to be pitched against each other for the title of fastest craft! For those who don't feel quite ready for the scale of the scrapheap challenge, there is the option ofbuilding new machines from old ones! Under the watchful eye of resident robotics whizz, Paul Ganjon, festival goers can create their very own little robot friend made from salvaged parts from other machines.

For the more computer minded generation there is: Scratch programming – Scratch is a programming environment that makes it easy to create interactive stories, animations, games, music, art and share creations on the web; and Raspberry Pi – a credit-card-sized single-board computer developed in the UK by the Raspberry Pi Foundation with the intention of stimulating the teaching of basic computer science in schools;Picade – part of the Raspberry Pi Company, the Picade is a small desktop arcade machine with a joystick and six buttons playing classic computer games for some low tech nostalgic pleasure! Minecraft, the creative and building aspects of Minecraft allow players to build constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D world; andWorld of Padman for people to try out their new found skills and peak behind the coding curtain of the PG rated game.

Other Machine related activities and shows include: Live Coding Band – always keen to intertwine the theme into the festival as much as possible, Deer Shed Festival have found possibly the only Live Coding Band in the land! They will be programming a computer live which, in turn, generates music that can be danced to as well!

With such an array of practical skills, technological techniques and information insights on offer, the Machines theme for Deer Shed Festival will celebrate all types of machinery, new and old, large and small, including some rustic gems like Pringle Tubes crystal radios, Music Boxes and a substitute pet for the weekend, theThingies –These mechanical beasts, or ‘Thingies’ will be buzzing around for festival goers to play with!

Open’er Festival confirms Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, Kendrick Lamar and more

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds

A band famous to all from post-punk afficionados to the music TV and Internet generations. Their new album was one of the most anticipated returns in recent years. Ladies and Gentlemen, for the first time at Open'er Festival, the masters of dark poetry, Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds! They will perform on 4 July on Main Stage.

This year, we celebrate the 30th anniversary of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds as formed by leading man Nick Cave, multi-instrumentalist Mick Harvey and guitarist Blixa Bargeld. From the very start, they were able to create their own version of alternative rock, incorporating elements of punk, gothic rock, no wave and blues.

In these three decades, they underwent countless line-up changes (with Cave now remaining the only original member), released 15 full-length albums and raced through a handful of genres, from the definite post-punk of first releases, through songwriter ballads and melancholic pop duos with Kylie Minogue or PJ Harvey to raw garage rock. In every genre, they can count legions of faithful fans, most of all thanks to Cave, his charisma, the unique voice and a talent to write poetic, dark and often ironic lyrics.

Mid-February 2013 saw the release of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds 15th studio album "Push The Sky Away", promoted by singles "We No Who U R" and "Jubilee Street". Well-received by critics from the very start, "Push The Sky Away" was called a "majestic and desolate masterpiece" (NME), one of the best records in the catalogue of this prolific Australian legend.

Kendrick Lamar

"Now everybody serenade the new faith of Kendrick Lamar/ This is king Kendrick Lamar" – these are the two opening verses of “Compton”, the final song on “Good Kid, M.A.A.D. city” – best LP of 2012 according to Pitchfork. Both the listing and the words of Lamar himself are not vainly blowing his own trumpet.

The coronation of Lamar did not only make Lamar king of West Coast, but also of the entire American hip-hop, which had to subdue to the 26-year-old rapper in 2012. Released in October, "Good Kid, M.A.A.D city” was deemed a rap masterpiece from the very start, earning only positive reviews, praising the album concept (the story of growing up in LA suburbs as told in 12 songs), mature lyrics and production. The LP was produced by Dr. Dre, who halted his work on long awaited "Detox" to help his protégé. The studio work featured 12 different producers, including Pharrell, Hit-Boy, Just Blaze, yet was an extremely cohesive work. "Good Kid, M.A.A.D. city” was streamed over 3 million times in its opening week, the second result of 2012 after Mumford & Sons.

The LP debuted as #2 in Billboard charts, currently having sold nearly a million copies. Both Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg deemed Lamar the new king of West Coast and invited him onstage during the memorable Coachella 2012 appearance. Kendrick was featured on LPs from The Game and Drake, who also invited him on tour, along with A$AP Rocky. The two collaborated on "Fuckin’ Problems", and Drake returned the feature on "Good Kid, M.A.A.D. city”'s "Poetic Justice”. Built around a Janet Jackson hit, the single doesn't feature Janet in the video (as was Kendrick's dream), yet, the interest in Lamar is strong as ever. He sold out the European tour, appeared on two most important TV shows in the US and has a long feature queue, recently appearing on tracks from 50 Cent and Dido. Lamar will spend the summer at European festivals, including Gdynia's Heineken Open'er.

Kendrick Lamar

Devendra Banhart

Devendra Banhart is the second American alternative player at Open'er, following Animal Collective, with whom they co-formed the fluid Americana/New Weird America movement.  – Prior to becoming the king of Americana, he took a long road, straight from a movie on a young rebel hero. American-born, he spent a few years in his mother's native Venezuela, studied art and traveled around Europe, busking before finally having been discovered by an influential person. Swans' Michael Gira was enchanted by Banhart's demo, releasing or co-producing his first albums on his Young Gods label. However, the breakthrough "Cripple Crow" was released on XL Recordings, who realised the potential of freak folk. Banhart's music stood out with its elements of latino music, the singer's trademark vibrato, complete with his image of New York hippie, collaborating with Beck, CocoRosie and Antony and The Johnsons. On 11 March, his 7th solo album "Mala" premieres on Nonesuch label. Recorded almost entirely on analog TASCAM gear, "Mala" reminds us that the artist we're about to witness at Open'er this July is truly unusual.

Hey

Hey incarnate the living and ever-changing history of Polish music. Their charismatic singer Katarzyna Nosowska is often called the best lyricist in her generation, and the band won an endless number of awards. Their style includes all important influences in guitar music of the last two decades, from grunge and alternative rock to electronic experiments. All 10 of their records became platinum. Hey welcomes the second generation of fans, who take to their intelligent lyrics and music, an intelligence their musical peers could never even approach. It will be Hey's first time at Open'er, but recalling Nosowska's 2012 solo debut on Tent Stage, we know it will be a very special time.

Full lineup announced for Boomtown Fair

With the first line-up announcement consisting of heavyweights such as The Parov Stelar Band, Ozomatli, Toots and the Maytals, Mad Caddies, Arrested Development, Richie Spice and Collie Buddz, new headline acts include Bad Manners and Gentleman and the Evolution. Also freshly announced are an abundance of acts that may not be on the usual festival goer’s radar but are guaranteed to provide some of the most magical moments at BoomTown 2013! Taking place over 8th – 12thAugust in the Matterly Estate, Winchester, BoomTown will envelope its residents in a handpicked world of ska, punk, bass, folk, gypsy, swing, reggae, roots, jungle and drum ‘n’ bass, for four days of unadulterated escapism and musical indulgence!

Bad Manners will once again be gracing the streets of BoomTown after their high octane headline performance back in 2011, the ska legends will be taking to the Town Centre (Main Stage) ahead of The Parov Stelar band on Sunday evening to ramp up proceedings, ensuring that the festival is seen out in true BoomTown style! Whilst over in TrenchTown, BoomTown reggae fans will be treated to the sublime roots reggae delights of Gentleman and the Evolution to guarantee the sunshine vibes are blasted out good ‘n proper!

Although BoomTown packs in some superstar big hitters from ska, reggae and bass cultures, they also dedicate a big chunk of their line up to the lesser known, grass roots talents that make the scenes they celebrate so loved throughout the globe! With an abundance of acts on the bill for this year, it is hard to know where to start when faced with such an impressive range of top-notch international acts from a vast spectrum of awesome genres. To help with this, the Mayor of BoomTown has picked out a selection of acts from each of the seven districts as top tips to keep an ear out for – this is just the tip of the iceberg but we’ve got to start somewhere!

TrenchTown boasts the best in dub, reggae, dance hall and ‘Jungle-is-massive’ sounds throughout its three unique venues; The Lion’s Den, Aztec Bar and the Hidden Woods. A selection of the esteemed guests heading in from the various corners of Europe to visit this district include; Swedish reggae superstar, Million Stylez, the Polish reggae and hip hop mashups of Dreadsquad, the versatile and unique approach to all sub genres of reggae & bass music from Croatia’s Balkan Hi-FiRadikal Guru’s combination of dubstep with roots reggae and UK dub, French heavyweight crew Dub Inc’s combo of dub, reggae, ska and rap, and mega stars within the German-speaking reggae scene, I-Fire; plus one of this country’s own bonafide reggae legends, the mighty Jah Shaka, will be bringing his full soundsystem and hosting a massive street party.

DownTown hosts some of the most popular venues for late night shenanigans including Arcadia, BoomBox – where the infamous Dance Off can be found, The Bodyshop, and the ever debauched Asbo Disco. Keep an eye out for; The Outside Agency, hailing from Holland, they fit the bill of The Bodyshop perfectly by delivering a perfect blend of dark and industrial elements at almost every conceivable speed, covering everything from old acid to breakcore and anything in between! Lady Waks, a one woman industry: a promoter, producer (winning best breakthrough producer in Breakspoll 2009) and DJ (nominated Best Breakthrough DJ at Breakspoll) she is at the top of her game for anything she turns her hand to and one to experience live! Also be sure to watch out for Riddim Fruit Records, they will be taking over the Boombox with some of the most exciting new names in ghetto-funk, breaks and general big chunky beat bumping goodness!

El Barrio Loco, one of the new districts for BoomTown 2013, showcases dirty bass in its multitude of venues including Poco Loco, Circo Baile & Samedia. The Major’s picks for this district include a globetrotting array of bass junkie, hip-hop, jungleist stylers; French DJ quintet and hip-hop masters, Chinese Man; The Bristol / Trinidad carnival connection of Jus Now whose sound, which mixes up UK bass and Caribbean Soca, has been tearing up the clubs and radio airways recently and are certain to do the same to the streets of BoomTown; UK hip-hop super-group Problem Child will be pumping out their glitched up beats to bring a refreshingly futuristic take on the formula, whilst rappers DubbledgeDabbla and Illaman manage to drop some seriously good rhymes without taking themselves too seriously!

The Town Centre is the epicentre of all things ska, party and fun! Known for the being the hub of the action, this stage has welcomed the likes of Gogol Bordello, Jimmy Cliff, Caravan Palace (to name a few) over previous years and will be the backdrop for headliners:Toots and the Maytals, Arrested Development, The Parov Stelar Band, Mad Caddies and Ozomatli this year. Also under the famous Town Centre orbit, keeping the party swinging and the knees skanking, will be massive Scandinavian bands such as: Hoffmaestro, the Swedish ska, electronic and alternative pop band who dare to go where few have been before, mixing up ska with reggae, techno, New Orleans-funk with a dash of country, and Ska ‘N’ Ska, who know how to get things started and make that BoomTown feeling run through the veins!  Plus from France, uber cool Parisian sextet – Les Yeux D'la Tete and Bordeaux’s Les Hurlements D’Leo both blend gypsy rhythms, traditional melodies, jazz leanings and rock sensibilities into musical journeys of love, humour and party madness!

Arrested Development

ChinaTown, another new area for 2013, picks up from where OldTown feared to venture, filled with the most ‘avin it levels of punk: ska punk, rockin punk, folk punk and polka punk, as well as a healthy dollop of ‘hell jazz ‘n’roll’ thrown in for good measure! The venues include the ChinaTown Theatre and Devil Kicks Dance Hall, where top spots for the weekend include; the anarchic and often comically political German ska-punk RotFront and folk-meets-global-gypsy royalty – Crash Nomada, who project a unique hybrid of folk music from around the world, supercharged with electric punk-rock energy, this truly international folk-punk outfit from Stockholm have been labelled as Sweden’s best live band numerous times over the years and BoomTown can’t wait to ensnare them in the city walls and keep them forever!

OldTown is filled with Balkan, gypsy, pirate and skankin’ beatz;  The Fat B*stard Gang Band – this mighty fine French Balkan Electro Punk band are known for blowing their audience’s away with their all powerful brass ensemble and a fat rhythm section… Another act to keep an eye for in the heart of OldTown is Räfven, at first glance seemingly a collection of eight odd ball Gypsy Punks, but once on stage they morph into one single organism that delivers a frenetic and untamed mix of music that's guaranteed to send people just a little bit silly!

Mayfair Avenue is the hub of high class – its swanky electro swing clubs and live swing bands venues include; The Fitz-Sloane Manor, The Bank, The Park Hotel, Bump (Roller Disco), The Bling Bar and Last Aid; acts to watch out for amongst the BoomTown glitterati are: Swingrowers, a young, dynamic Italian duo from Palermo in Sicily, who have taken vintage swing and buffed its spats up to a dazzling shine, then thrown a glitter ball in for good measure, resulting a respectful update of a beloved genre that has seen them tour with the likes of Parov Stelar and Caravan Palace! And finally, Mac Abbé et le Zombi Orchestr a French rock’n’swing outfit that have a striking stage presence and put on one hell of a show!

These are just a tiny splattering of all that is on offer at BoomTown Fair, see below for a full list of the booked line-up for 2013 and head to the website to start looking into who might be a personal highlight for this year’s global phenomenon that is BoomTown Fair!

With over 700 festivals taking place in the UK each year, it is no longer acceptable to simply provide a green grass festival to several thousand ticket holders. Beach Break Live’s announcement today will transform the idea of a traditional festival format and location. Taking over Newquay to become the first UK Music Holiday, Beach Break Live has announced a plethora of entertainment including a main stage on the award winning Fistral Beach for the first time ever, secret sets in greasy spoons, feverish DJ’s in classic clubs, hidden rooftop raves, beach discos, boat parties and more. Glamping, camping and caravans will all be available for those wanting to retain some of the elements of a traditional festival while Beach Breakers are encouraged to use local businesses, accommodation and facilities wherever possible during their stay in Newquay. Revelers will be transported to a seaside heaven with pool parties, street art, circus, comedy, exclusive after party’s hosted by the likes of Hospitality, Digital Soundboy and Rinse FM, pasty parties, harbor side cinema, theatre, extreme sports, laser shows and much more.

As one of Buggs only festival dates in 2013, no doubt revellers will flock to Newquay to hear him perform live. The Boomtown Rats to headline Chagstock Festival

The Boomtown Rats’ Chagstock appearance is their only 2013 UK Festival headline performance, and one of only two UK dates this summer.

Formed in 1975 in Dublin, The Boomtown Rats played their first UK shows with the Ramones and Talking Heads and fought the punk wars alongside the Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Jam and The Stranglers. They were one of the biggest bands of the late 70’s and 80’s, and their string of top ten hits and platinum albums earned them Brit Awards, Ivor Novellos and Grammy’s. They made history as the first Irish band to have a UK no 1 hit with Rat Trap.

Boomtown Rats

Bob Geldof says, “"The second I heard the name 'Shagstock' I knew that was THE festival for The Boomtown Rats. Only later when we agreed and signed contracts did Simon, the Rats drummer, point out it was in fact 'Chagstock', his local summer Music Fest. Oh well…
I will do my best to personally attempt to do everything in my power to have the name revert to my far better original mistake. It’s a beautiful part of the world. Billy Bragg is a hero. The Rats are a great band. It will be a pleasure to do the Rat in Devon again."

Chagstock is one of the Westcountry’s best-loved festivals. Set in 45 acres of farmland on the northern edge of Devon’s beautiful Dartmoor, Chagstock is renowned for its stunning location, diverse line-up of artists and family-friendly atmosphere. Chagstock showcases the very best music, food and entertainment that the Westcountry and the UK have to offer.

Simon Ford from Chagstock Festival says, “We are delighted to announce The Boomtown Rats will exclusively headline our main stage at Chagstock. They are a classic band with a string of memorable hits. Combined with Billy Bragg’s performance immediately before the Boomtown Rats, Chagstock 2013 is shaping up to be our best line up ever – and we still have a number of major artists to announce! We can’t wait!”

Returning after the stunning sell-out success of last year’s event which featured KT Tunstall, Fun Lovin Criminals, Seth Lakeman and Alabama 3 amongst many others, Chagstock retains its traditional 2-day format in 2013. As introduced last year in recognition of the tough economic climate for families, all children under 12 can attend for free (ticket is required). Chagstock’s capacity is once again capped at just 5,000 tickets to ensure that its intimate, family-friendly atmosphere is maintained.

This year’s fancy dress theme will be ‘Circus’
