Beady EyeDescribing the highly anticipated Beady Eye debut, Liam Gallagher certainly raised the bar high. Different Gear, Still Speeding is filled with songs „as good as Definitely Maybe,“ he told the NME. Yet, what the title promises is definitely what you get. After Oasis split in 2009, Liam Gallagher and his band mates Gem Archer, Andy Bell, and Chris Sharrock simply had to get back in the studio, taking it a step further by using the newly formed Beady Eye as their creative outlet. Compared to Oasis, Beady Eye might only be a four-piece, yet the band’s in-your-face attitude is all the more rock’n’roll. The album’s edgy, rough and pure, conquering the next level of Britpop on its way. You get the anthem-like classics („The Roller”), fast forward smash hits („Four Letter Word”), and such retro pieces as „World Outside My Room“ in 60s guise on top. If that’s not enough proof for you, wait till you see them live.
Modeselektor present Melt! Selektor StageOur Melt! Selektor Stage is taking shape with Modeselektor watching over the goings-on in all their manifold glory. After their spectacular live set together with Bonaparte in 2010, the Berlin-based Gernot and Szary will top last year’s show with a never before seen and heard techno supergroup. Under the name of A.T.O.L., Modeselektor will get behind the turntables together with Marcel Dettmann and Shed (Ostgut Ton) to present their vision of techno to the Melt! crowd live. Also joining the stage’s line-up, which is curated by Modeselektor in close collaboration: Nicolas Jaar live, who’s fanbase stretches from techno to indie lovers. Ostgut Ton, Berghain and Panoramabar’s in-house label is back. Last year, label brought its manifold soundscapes to the Sleepless Floor going quite a bit back to the roots. Even in the beginnings of Melt!, many of the label’s DJs coined the sound of Ferropolis. In 2011, this will be no different. Besides Marcel Dettmann and Ben Klock, Marcel Fengler as well as Barker & Baumecker (live) will travel to Ferropolis to conquer the Big Wheel Stage this year. In the spirit of Ostgut Ton, the four acts are about to present the genre diversity the electro label, which celebrated its fifth anniversary last year, is known for. From the power station to the steel giants – Melt! is looking forward to a reunion with Ostgut Ton.
If you have been longing for more guitar-driven sounds to be announced, well, here you go: The Drums will be playing their only festival show at Melt!, and so will the indie legends of Swans. Iron and Wine’s performance promises to be a truly intense experience as much as the gig of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros. With Foster The People, we have another Melt! office top tip for you.
We are also looking forward to the appearances of Crystal Castles, FM Belfast, the Le Tigre spin-off MEN, the return ofDananananaykroyd, and Planningtorock, who will be performing her spectacular new album W (20th May/Cooperative Music). Still to announce one more headliner, the initial acts to top the bill are Spiritualized and Battles! A perfect fit for a theme that combines the divine and devilish, Spiritualized are making their only confirmed UK festival appearance so far at Standon Calling, headlining the Main Stage on Saturday night. With their first album in three years due for release in the autumn, the seminal rockers are likely to treat the crowd to a mix of new material and music from their genius back catalogue, which includes classic albums Songs in A&E and Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space.
Battles will take to the stage on Friday night, armed with new material from their much-anticipated new album Gloss Drop. Released on June 6th it’s their first album since 2007! With a new vocalist to announce, Battles are a band likely to be on everyone’s lips this summer and it’s an honour to have them rock the Standon stage. Like Spiritualized, Battles deservedly enjoy a reputation for stretching sonic boundaries and they’ve promised a jaw-dropping live show.
Straight off the back of completing their sixth (as yet untitled) studio album, THE MARS VOLTA have confirmed their return to the UK for an exclusive performance at this year’s SONISPHERE. The El Paso Grammy award winners will be bringing their unique blend of Latin-American infused psychedelic prog rock to KNEBWORTH to headline the SATURN stage for an unforgettable, excitingly visceral and wildly energetic set. Over the last decade,THE MARS VOLTA have earned huge critical acclaim and kudos from both musicians and media alike, with musical masterpieces like “Inertiatic Esp”, “Televators”, “The Widow”, “Wax Simulacra”, “Teflon” and “Since We’ve Been Wrong” dropping jaws the world over. With the promise of these – and possibly some new songs from the forthcoming album – don’t miss THE MARS VOLTA’s only UK show of 2011, playing just before BIFFY CLYROtake to the APOLLO stage. Says guitarist Omar Rodríguez-López:
First up is the internationally renowned artiste and uber producer Mark Ronson. There are no limits when it comes to the success of this multi-talented Brit award winner who has worked with some of the biggest names in music including Amy Winehouse, Christina Aguilera and Adele. Another chart topper joining the bill is Calvin Harris, the No.1 selling artiste whose hits include ‘Something For The Weekend’ and ‘Dance Wiv Me’ which saw him collaborate with Dizzee Rascal will be performing a DJ set on the Main Outdoor stage. Next up we have one of the UK’s biggest musical figureheads, BBC Radio 1’s Zane Lowe and multi award winning dubstep duo Nero. The dominating sound over the last 12 months has undoubtedly been dubstep and Nero are at the forefront, having scooped the award for ‘Best Dubstep Act’ in the beatport Awards and being signed to the Chase & Status label, 2011 is already set to eclipse last year’s success.
One artiste that everyone’s talking about at the moment is the genre-breaking Skrillex, the American DJ/Producer who describes his current sound as “a mix of dubstep, electro and glitch all thrown in together” is beatport’s latest musical dominator, following the release of his 9-song EP, the title track claimed the sites No.1 slot, the first time a dubstep track has ever done so with the remaining 8 songs also breaking into the Top 10. Other acts performing include one of Drum & Bass’ biggest ambassadors DJ Hype who will be joined on stage by MC:IC3, London based trio Modestep, d&b master DJ Fresh, original ninja Jaguar Skills, and Hospital Records Netsky who leads the wave of new skool d&b talent from Europe.
Zane Lowe leads the charge this year as Music Director for the ‘Rocks’ brand. The godfather of new music has championed the Ibiza Rocks movement since its beginning in 2005 and is part of the family, dedicated to pushing boundaries in live music in Ibiza, Mallorca and beyond.
Indie outfit The Wombats are returning for their first Ibiza Rocks live gig since 2008 and their Mallorca Rocks debut show. They will be supported by hotly tipped Slough boys Brother and it’s safe to say that both bands pack as much in performance pedigree as they do in attitude. Nowhere else are thundering live performances and scorching hot summer nights so perfectly placed than at Mallorca and Ibiza Rocks.
An appearance from the legend that is Fatboy Slim will go down in history as he makes his Mallorca Rocks debut before bounding over to the Ibiza Rocks Hotel courtyard to wow the crowds in this famous space for the very first time. He’s played Ibiza Rocks Bar before, but now it’s time for Fatboy Slim to premiere poolside! Totally Enormous EXTINCT Dinosaurs will be out in full force to support Fatboy Slim. Whether the fans are front row in the 2000 capacity open-air venue or watching with their friends from their bedroom balcony with a bird’s eye view of the stage, the unrivalled atmosphere at Ibiza Rocks and Mallorca Rocks truly unites the crowd.
Hailing from Herfordshire, dance punk trio Friendly Fires are set to light up the stage this summer at Mallorca and Ibiza Rocks. Fans might quite literally see them ‘Jump in the Pool’ in true rock star fashion. Mercury Prize nominated band Friendly Fires playing an open air stage next to a giant lagoon style pool – now there’s a match made in musical heaven.
Since supporting Chase and Status at Ibiza Rocks last year, Tinie Tempah has broken records and boundaries in British music with hit single ‘Pass Out’ being the smash hit of 2010 and securing him the British Single and British Breakthrough at the recent BRIT Awards. He has worked with the likes of Swedish House Mafia and Ellie Goulding and will undoubtedly pass out all the hits and pull out all the stops for his headline shows at Mallorca Rocks and Ibiza Rocks.
Two of the most exciting producers to hail from the UK, bonafide festival headliners Chase and Status, played an electrifying set in Ibiza last year and return in 2011 to share the bill with Labrinth, a young London musician sticking two fingers up in the face of generic pop music to deliver a new wave of British cool to the sun licked shores of Mallorca and Ibiza. Labrinth produced smash hit ‘Pass Out’ for Tinie Tempah and he’s ready to show the Balearics that he’s got plenty more where that came from.
‘Rocks’ welcomes back Example, supported by superstar producer Sub Focus who collaborated with phenomenal success on huge dance floor filler ‘Kickstarts’ in 2010 and will join forces again in the Balearics this summer. Another ‘Example’ of a breakthrough artist that Ibiza Rocks bet on is back in a headline slot. Example will also be performing material from his new album due out in the summer who he has worked on with Skream, Nero and Chase & Status. Prepare for euphoric choruses and deafening cheers from the ‘Rocks’ crowds in the courtyards, on the hotel balconies and beyond.
Scottish rockers Biffy Clyro are quite literally the best live act on the planet right now – they picked up an NME Award last month that said so. Prior to this, they had already won over the Ibiza Rocks crowd when they played the opening party last year, which culminated in the bare-chested and tight jean clad trio considering it so much of a career highlight that they finished their phenomenal set by diving headfirst into the Ibiza Rocks Hotel pool in celebration. Biffy Clyro may be Rock Gods that now grace the very biggest stages, playing to tens of thousands of people a time, but team ‘Rocks’ are proud to have lured these boys back to blast their big sound to a more intimate crowd in the Balearics this summer. It didn’t take much persuasion!
The pioneers of the Balearics live music scene will welcome the pioneers of British dubstep Magnetic Man to work the crowd into a frenzy and make the hotel grounds throb with heavy basslines well into the night. Magnetic Man (Skream, Benga and Artwork) were undoubtedly the biggest draw of the recent NME Awards Tour and they will show why when they thoroughly mix things up at Mallorca and Ibiza Rocks. With the shimmering vocals of dubstep’s first lady Katy B as support, this is set to be one pulsatingly hot gig that cannot be missed.

The infamous Swedish House Mafia are set to tear it up when they descend upon Balado. Huge individually and riotous together, the superstar trio of DJ’s Steve Angello, Sebastian Ingrosso and Axwell take dance music to another level when performing as a collective. They stormed the charts with Tinie Tempah last year providing the unofficial soundtrack to the summer with dance floor anthem ‘Miami 2 Ibiza’ and now it’s time to take on T in the Park.
Leftfield pioneered the electronic music scene of 90’s Britain with seminal debut album ‘Leftism’ which fused dub, breakbeat and techno. The album was shortlisted for the Mercury Music Prize and reached Q Magazine’s 100 Greatest British Albums ever. Famous for touring with an outrageously loud sound system which created headlines in Amsterdam and caused the ceiling of the Brixton Academy to crumble, Neil Barnes is set to make the blue walls of the Slam Tent throb as he single-handedly brings the Leftfield experience to the masses this summer.
This man is so on top of his game that he hardly needs an introduction. Deadmau5, the 28 year old Canadian, is an electro house producer with a big difference. There’s the large cartoon mouse head costume of course, but there’s also the artist, the technical whizzkid, the Grammy Award nominee and the outstanding reputation for being the most forward thinking person in electronic music right now. Killer clubland tracks such as ‘Ghosts N Stuff’ and ‘I Remember’ are sure to form part of a highly visual set that will go down in history. The man has his finger on the pulse, he creates the pulse, he IS the pulse.
