Sziget 2020 announce huge lineup

Sziget makes its first 2020 announcement as one of the world’s biggest and most diverse festival line-ups to date with Calvin Harris, Dua Lipa, Kings Of Leon, Major Lazer and The Strokes plus over seventy-five more massive names across the seven day celebration on The Island of Freedom. Sziget is the fifth largest festival in the world and takes place on 5-11 August 2020, in the heart of Budapest on Óbuda Island. Other artists locked to play include Anna Calvi, A$AP Rocky, Denzel Curry, Diplo, FKA twigs, Foals, Kaytranada, Khalid, Lewis Capaldi, Mabel, Slowthai, Stormzy and more. Tickets available now from €199 and can be bought online:  szigetfestival.com (prices due to change of 3 March 2020).

Over the years Sziget has played host to some of the most prestigious names in music, including the likes of David Bowie, Oasis, The Stone Roses, Iggy Pop, Radiohead, Arctic Monkeys, Sex Pistols and Kendrick Lamar.

The massive 80 act announcement showcases a wide variety of musical genres that Sziget has always been beloved and well known for. Ranging from stadium rock to trap, from singer-songwriter to folktronica, from funk to psychedelic pop providing the hottest names for each style. The party literally never stops across the 7 days. The festival even has a beach within the festival where you can relax and cool down under Budapest’s hot summer sun.

Returning to Sziget for 2020 is certified hit-maker Calvin Harris who boasts hit collaborations with some of the world’s biggest stars. The BRIT Award and GRAMMY recognised Scottish DJ, producer and song-writer needs no introduction having been famed for bringing a massive atmosphere to his live performances. Some of Calvin Harris’s modern dance classics include songs like Rihanna’s ‘We Found Love’, Dua Lipa’s ‘One Kiss’ and Sam Smith’s ‘Promises’ amongst an abundance of others.

Sziget will open their arms with a wide welcome back for multi-award winning Kosovo-born Londoner, Dua Lipa, after her debut in 2018. As one of the most streamed female artists in the world and now dubbed the Madonna of Generation Z, the pop sensation colossus has a multitude of futuristic disco bangers that she accompanies with jazzercise-style dance routines bringing a standout live performance. With a stack of floor-filling hits including ‘One Kiss’, ‘New Rules’ and ‘Electricity’ Dua Lipa already has two UK No.1’s at the age of 24 with no signs of slowing down those chart rulings.

Kings Of Leon are another act preparing to take to the Sziget stage for the second time after their crowd-wowing performance in 2015. Having emerged onto the scene early in the new millennium, the Nashville band have gone on to build an enormous global fan base releasing multiple-platinum selling albums and becoming undeniably one of the biggest bands in the world. After achieving critical acclaim for their first two albums (Youth and Young Manhood and Aha Shake Heartbreak), Kings of Leon have bounded to stadium status with further breakthrough albums, and cult hits such as – ‘Use Somebody’, ‘Sex On Fire’ and ‘The Bucket’.

Sziget will be graced with two performances from three-time GRAMMY winner Diplo – one solo show and one as part of the infamous Jamaican-American electronic dance trio, Major Lazer who are also set to light up the Hungarian-stage ahead of their upcoming final studio album. The genre-blending, party-starting collaborators have given the world a decade of some of the most iconic beats across music today with enormous influence on electronic acts such as Justin Bieber and Ellie Goulding. Major Lazer are famed for their highly energetic and entertaining performances – expect dancers!

Coinciding with a brand new album in 2020, New York indie legends The Strokes will be grabbing their guitars for a hit-guaranteed appearance at this year’s Sziget. Having laid low for the last decade the new album will be The Strokes’ first LP since their 2013 smash, Comedown Machine. Often credited with having spearheaded a revival of 1960s-style garage rock during the early 2000’s, The Strokes will return with a bang this year, blessing the Sziget mainstage in the process.

More than just its massive host of musicians, Sziget brings together a programme of theatre, cabaret, installations, performances and art. Set in the heart of Budapest on Óbuda Island, Sziget is a true city within the city with its 500,000+ Szitizens attending from over 100 countries each year.  Sziget invites you to explore, get lost and find yourself again on The Island of Freedom.

Bestival 2018: SILK CITY – Reviewed!

Tonight, for a marvelous treat – Bestival are giving us the second ever live show of the brand spanking new Diplo and Mark Ronson collab; Silk City. As the castle field fills up and an NYC back-alley set design is rolled onto the stage, the sunburnt masses are gearing up for a night of big beats and laser filled dreams.

Debut hit ‘Only Can Get Better’ proves a banging opener, supported by a barrage of lights and Diplo’s yells of “Bestival are you ready? Let’s go!”. The stage set-up is something outside of the usual DJ realm and makes for a much more visual and interesting show than just two guys pressing buttons, as they work their way through remixes of current and old hits. Projected neon street signs blink on the grey walls and faux Silk City band posters are pasted in hypnotising repetition across the big screens. Hung from the centre of the stage is an enormous disco ball, spraying flecks of light across the jumping crowd – it’s honestly one of rowdiest Bestival crowds I’ve ever seen, whether that’s down to mass sunstroke, first day drinks, or a genuine love for the music, is yet to be determined.

Shouting “We made some remixes for you tonight, just for you Bestival, hope you like them” Silk City show off with a plethora of interesting and big mixes, there’s truly something for everyone in there. A little Tori Amos anyone? A little of Kelis’ ‘Milkshake’ does indeed bring all the boys to the yard (and yes, we Brits are still largely terrible at twerking) but it’s the Dua Lipa ‘New Rules’ remix that everyone goes absolutely berserk for.

With their embroidered Silk City denim jackets (where can I get one please?), Diplo and Ronson just flow seamlessly through hit after hit, shouting such classic DJ tropes as “We’re called Silk City, are you ready to party tonight?” and “Let’s go!”. Ok, so it is a bit cheesy but that’s kind of what we’re looking for – something we can get wild to.

A little bit of Route 94, someone spinning glow poi in the crowd and “This is the first night of Bestival 2018, thanks for partying with us tonight! This is only our second gig as Silk City!” has the duo firmly established as a Bestival success, and for a bit of personal joy as 30-something, I loved the inclusion of Wamdue Project’s ‘King of my Castle’. C’mon, what a jam, am I right?

A little bit of Diplo’s own ‘Be Right There’ flows surprisingly well into Missy Elliott’s ‘Work It’ and a remix of Major Lazer’s ‘Lean On’ gives us the feels from Bestivals’ past. Further into the surprisingly funky and retro set, we’re asking each other what we’re gonna do with all the junk in our trunks (again with the poor twerking situation) followed by my new favourite version of Amy Winhouse’s ‘Valerie’.

Closing out with a second round of ‘Only Can Get Better’, Diplo calls out “Thank you for taking a chance on us tonight Bestival… we know how important it is” as the giant confetti cannon covers the arena in flickering light.

Now I know this collaboration in its infancy, obviously doesn’t have a back-catalogue of their own hits to roll through, but they have wisely created a set-list that punches hard at the absolute core point of Bestival – fun. I think they did a cracking job of it, despite some protests that it was nothing more than a glorified school disco. I have but one gripe – why where they scheduled at the same time as Bicep?

V Festival add Mark Ronson, Example and more

V Festival, sponsored by Virgin Media, is proud to announce the addition of hit-maker Mark Ronson, performing a DJ set, Example supported by DJ Wire, Maverick Sabre, Scouting for Girls, Aston Merrygold, Bleachers and Billboard chart-topper Tove Lo to the 2015 bill.

Returning to V Festival following his 2014 appearance, Example said: “I can’t wait to return to V Festival, the crowds never disappoint. A lot of people will be used to my shows with the live band behind me, but this time I’ll be bringing DJ Wire as I want to put on a unique rave with a twist. I've been lucky enough to perform at festivals all over the world but there's always something special about V Festival – it feels like my home turf."

Aston Merrygold said: "I'm so excited to be performing at V Festival for the first time, it's going to be great fun! It has definitely been tough trying to contain myself, sitting on my hands waiting to get out there with new material, so I can't wait to finally share my music with everyone…bring it on!!!"

The newly announced acts will be joining a 20th anniversary line-up that includes Calvin HarrisKasabianSam SmithStereophonicsGeorge Ezra and Ellie Goulding. What’s more, the hottest names in music will be performing alongside an eclectic mix of comedy headliners including Russell KaneFrankie BoyleShappi Khorsandi and Nick Helm, who will all take centre stage in the Glee Club Comedy Tent across the weekend.

Franz Ferdinand and Sparks to play a joint set at Benicassim 2015

Soon to be taking the stage at benicassim in 2015 is the newly configured FFS, and by that I don’t mean for fucks sake! A seemingly different pairing, Franz Ferdinand and Sparks have united to create a sort-of super group, and to top it off a collective album produced by non other than John Congleton. Ron Mael (Sparks’ keyboardist) has said the album sounds like ‘the wreckage of a train crash between the bands’. Woah, well if that’s anything to go by we’re sure their set won’t be anything less than mind blowing, and we can’t wait to see what’s in store.

But that’s not the only wonders Benicassim has to offer, with it’s coming of age this year and to celebrate the big 2-1 they’ve added some amazing bands to the bill. Headliners include britpop legends Blur and drum and bass kings The Prodigy, plus with new acts just announced theres something for everyone who wants to have fun in the sun.

On the cusp of releasing his 6th studio album Frank Turner and the Sleeping Souls promises to wow us all, there’s monumental post-rock from Godspeed You! Black Emperor, raucous rock ’n’ roll from The Cribs, epic Muse-like soundscapes from Spain’s Vetusta Morla, Reverend & The Makers bring their great street songs. There’s going to be huge techno sessions from Tiga and Evan Baggs and a dash of French house from Madeon. Exciting young pups Palma Violets and Swim Deep join the bill too, whilst representing Ireland are The Riptide Movement, Hamsandwich, and Gavin James.

All these and more added to a bill that already includes the massive names above as well as Crystal Fighters, Jamie T, Kaiser Chiefs, Mark Ronson, Public Enemy, Stromae and that’s not even the half of it yet. With a few more names to be added to the bill, this is sure to be a week not to forget.

Skrillex and Mark Ronson lead The Port lineup at Bestival 2015

Our own king of the ones & twos Rob da Bank says: “The Port is one of our finest achievements at Bestival, with some pretty stiff competition from all the other inventive constructions that have gone down over the last 12 years. A massive ship seemingly anchored into the grass at Robin Hill complete with smoking funnels, rusty portholes and all topped off with a crazy crew of nautical nutters dancing day and night in laser beam ecstasy.

I cannot wait to see what Skrillex will pull out the bag for a Sunday finale. Sonny hasn’t been to Bestival for four years so a lot has changed for all of us, and I think The Port is gonna be very special that night. Especially because, as anyone who’s seen Mark Ronson DJ knows, they’re in for a massive treat, too – a sublime Sunday night double-header, even if I do say so myself. I love Annie Mac’s back to back extravaganza – great concept and some amazing talent, and our Friday techno and disco explosion will kick it all off nicely. All aboard for another insane party at The Port!

Making his return to Bestival, we are absolutely ecstatic to be able to announce the mighty Skrillex will be ramping up the late night action on Sunday. A trail blazer of electronic dance music, he’s a six-time Grammy award winner, and a global icon, so you can guarantee when he drops the magic, it’s gonna go off. Fierce beats and rib-smashing bass ahoy!

He might know a thing or two about ruling the pop charts but Mark Ronson has got fat beats flowing through his veins. A true master with a pair of turntables, his sets are consistently devastating, spanking dancefloors into submission worldwide. Add in a touch of HMS Bestival’s own special magic and you’re on course for some truly euphoric last night shenanigans. Not to be missed.

With Annie Mac taking the reins on Saturday showcasing a series of very special back to back rinses, and Seth Troxler large and in charge on Friday, we really could keep you dancing all weekend long. And we just might, with sets from Four Tet, Tale of Us, Guy Gerber, Jackmaster, David Rodigan MBE, Hannah Wants, Mistajam, Erol Alkan, Andrew Weatherall, Greg Wilson, Toddla T, High Contrast and London Elektricity.

We’ll also have the very welcome return of Croydon’s finest, Benga, plus Special Request, Horse Meat Disco, Monki, Mele, Wookie, Slimzee, Etherwood, Fred V & Grafix, Dynamite MC, The Heatwave, Kiwi, Low Steppa, Logan Sama, Mella Dee and Flava D.

It’s not just a dance stage, it’s a life changing experience. Make sure you get yourself to The Port this September for a blissful summer of love.

Snoop Dogg & Rudimental to headline Lovebox 2015

Lovebox are proud to announce two incredible headliners:
Rudimental and Snoop Dogg. Rudimental are the Hackney quartet and Black Butter records breakout act that defined the sound of current UK music with their debut album Home, which featured the massive singles 'Feel the Love' and 'Waiting All Night'. Their set at Lovebox will see them performing tracks from their eagerly-awaited, incoming sophomore LP and they'll be sure to start the party off right when they headline on Fri-day: "We are so happy to announce we're back on the Lovebox stage this summer. London, are you ready?!"

Saturday sees the one and only Snoop Dogg headlining. A hip hop icon, the inimitable Snoop will be showcasing tracks from his forthcoming Pharrell-produced album BUSH, which Snoop himself describes as blos-soming with a "funkadelic glow". With BUSH set to channel feel-good, retro-futuristic funk and R&B, it's sure to charm the Lovebox crowd as effortlessly as his classic tracks 'Gin and Juice' and 'What's My Name' will. Snoop says: “London wats craccn!?!  I’m looking forward to come to my home away from home and rock that ish like I do best. It’s going down don’t meet me there beat me there. ugot2doit”

Across the entire weekend, the Lovebox masses will be treated to an ex-clusive set from Despacio, the innovative, custom-built soundsystem brought to you by LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy and 2manydjs. This is going to be an unmissable experience.

Another Lovebox exclusive is an extra-special A/V set from the revered Bonobo. His appearance is set to be immersive and unforgettable, as is Squarepusher's – his pioneering, experimental shows have wowed crowds the world over, and now he's set to stun Lovebox following a sold out show at the Barbican and the release of his highly-anticipated sixteenth album Damogen Furies.

Lovebox founders, Groove Armada return back to Victoria Park. The leg-endary dance duo will be behind the decks in a very special setting, and are delighted to be back. "First it was an album title. Then club nights in a strip club on Tottenham Court Road. Then it became a festival when we threw an outdoor party on Clapham Common,” they say. “Finally, on Victoria Park, we found ourselves running a 65,000 person weekender. For the first time since handing over the  keys to Lovebox in 2012, we're coming back to the park. Friday 17th July, on the Elrow turntables along-side Jackmaster, Acid Mondays, PBR and others. House music GA style, a London debut of a new house album, and trademark elrow circus may-hem."

Meanwhile, acclaimed composer and experimentalist Nils Frahm will al-so be making an appearance fresh from selling out the Barbican and two nights at The Roundhouse. This will also be his only festival appearance other than Wilderness, where he’ll be warming up for the one and only Björk.

The rest of the line-up is equally as incendiary. Electro pop mavericks Hot Chip will be showcasing material from their highly anticipated sixth album “Why Make Sense?”, as well as fan favourites such as “Over and Over” and “Ready for the Floor”. The bewitching Jessie Ware will be gracing us with her elegant, heart-melting ballads, whilst Mark Ronson, fresh from conquering the charts with the epic disco grooves of “Up-town Funk”, will be making a return appearance. Hip hop heavyweights Cypress Hill will be making their Lovebox debut, performing iconic tracks from their extraordinary 20 year (and counting) career, Swedish art pop quartet Little Dragon will be bringing their brand of wonky but delirious-ly catchy art-pop to the Lovebox masses, and award-winning Australian electronic artist Flume will also be getting the crowd moving.

Elsewhere, oddball rapper Danny Brown and New York MC Action Bron-son will be representing the cream of US hip hop, while the pop contin-gent will be satisfied by the presence of the rapidly ascending Ella Eyre and Australian sensations Flight Facilities. The dance mobs meanwhile will be sated by a stellar run of acts, including wunderkind bedroom producer Kaytranada, the ever influential Annie Mac, who has just tak-en the reins from Zane Lowe at Radio 1, and house legend MK, who says "I realize that I have more friends in London than at home, so it's kinda like I'm having a Lovebox house warming party ;)”.

There is so much else besides as well, with Lovebox presenting a magnif-icent assembly of acts both on the rise and well established, from all across the musical spectrum. We have the heroic likes of Goldie, Jimmy Edgar, Kerri Chandler, Boddika, Shy FX & Stamina MC and Gilles Peter-son rubbing shoulders alongside nascent talent such as Lion Babe, Jackmaster, Little Simz, Raury, Dusky, Dornik, Novelist and Preditah, among others. There are also live collaborations between the hottest names in dance, with Joy Orbison B2B with Ben UFO, and Heidi B2B with Kim Ann Foxman.

Lovebox is thrilled to welcome 1Xtra and Radio 1 Essential Mix to the proceedings who will be hosting the hottest dance stage on Friday and Saturday respectively.  From legends to new stars this is a stage set to take Lovebox by storm.

Music aside, Secret Productions' magical extracurriculars will provide an exciting itinerary of audiovisual delights for festivalgoers to sample and experience. Chris Tofu (AKA the Shangri-La superstar) and Global Local Productions will once again preside as Master of Ceremonies at the Bandstand, whilst Little Gay Brother will be bringing a bit of Vegas glamour to Victoria Park. Meanwhile, art/ technology “data visualisers” Fish Island Labs will be getting the crowds thinking and interacting.

This year will also see elrow hit London for a special Lovebox edition of their legendary, wild, chaotic Barcelona club night that interacts with its crowds in a very unique way. Explosive DJ sets will soundtrack playtime featuring inflatables, fancy dress, arcade games and so much more. It's a complete riot of fun, confetti, and offbeat characters and Lovebox can't wait to see elrow bring some sunny Spanish vibes (with a Bollywood twist) to Victoria Park for the first time.

There’ll be more sunshine from The Corona Sunsets Stage, which will bring the sounds of the Balearics to Lovebox, heralding the setting of the sun in the time honoured fashion and heightening the energy as the night progresses into darkness. They’ll be bringing the sound of the beach to Victoria Park in a magical setting.

A new project between The Roundhouse and Secret Forum will also be making its debut at Lovebox. The Voicebox will be a celebration of the human voice, with poetry slams, storytelling, beatboxing and more. Lovebox-goers will experience a variety of orators, poets, slam champi-ons, beatboxers and more that will hypnotise you with the power of speech. The Roundhouse says "We are thrilled to be launching a new venue dedicated to upcoming spoken word artists at Lovebox this sum-mer…. !".
