Leefest handing over creative control to the fans

LeeFestNamed 2012’s “Best Independent Festival” by the Association of Independent Music, LeeFest is now taking the extraordinary step of allowing fans to join its board of creative directors.

The homegrown festival, run by Lee Denny and a team of friends, was rebelliously founded in his back garden in Bromley, Kent in 2006 whilst his parents were away on holiday.  It has since exploded onto the festival scene, renowned for its focus on supporting emerging artists.

LeeFest is now embarking on its biggest challenge to date – attempting to raise £50,000 so it can grow whilst remaining independent and sponsor free. Instead of taking a traditional route, LeeFest will attempt to raise the money through crowd funding website Kickstarter, handing over creative control of the festival to fans in exchange for small investments in its development. Fans suggested the idea on the LeeFest Facebook page.

Denny (25) explains his motivation behind the move:

‘A community of creative and energetic people has been snowballing around the festival since it began. In order to grow the festival we were faced with a choice to sell out to big sponsors and investors, or do something different. We owe our current success to the amazing individuals involved, so raising finance from the people and giving them creative control of the festival in return seemed perfect!’

A link to the Kickstarter Project will be available from 9:00 on Wednesday 3rd April.

Artists announced for the 2013 event include Delphic, The Other Tribe, King Charles, Stanton Warriors and Public Service Broadcasting with many more to be added.

150 new bands added to Liverpool Sound City

This year’s line-up includes some of the most innovative names in contemporary music including recent number 1 album act Bastille, one of the UK’s most ferocious rock bands, Enter Shikari, Manchester’s band of the moment, Everything Everything, the psychedelic garage rock of Thee Oh Sees and the futuristic indie pop of fellow American Darwin Deez.

Pioneering electronic artists include Mount Kimbie, Darkstar and Oneohtrix Point Never whilst hotly tipped performances come from the likes of AlunaGeorge, King Krule, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Drenge, Pins, The 1975 and Melody’s Echo Chamber.
 
On each of the three nights of Sound City there will be a very special show at Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral and confirmed to headline are Noah and the Whale, Dexys and The Walkmen.
 
The music programme features over 360 artists in over 25 venues over 3 days and today Sound City announce 150 brand new artists to perform in Liverpool in May.
 
London based five-piece Eliza And The Bear make a charming blend of indie pop and folk, laced with warm harmonies and uplifting melodies. Receiving a great response from their debut double A side single “Upon The North / The Southern Wild”, the band are set to embark on their first support tour with Athlete in May. 
 
Sun Glitters is the guise of Luxemburg based electronic / experimental musician; Victor Ferreira. Mixing an array of lush melodies, pitch-shifted vocals with down tempo beatwork, Sun Glitters have drawn comparisons to the likes of Burial, Holy Other and Gold Panda.
 
Middlesbrough band Collectors Club have shown in their debut singles “Wanna Be You” and “First To Know” an ability to write infectious indie pop tracks. After a successful 2012 and being shortlisted as BBC Introducing’s Ones To Watch for 2013, the band are currently working on their debut with Paddy Jordan (Young Rebel Set).
 
Swimming Lessons is the recording project of multi-instrumentalist Ben Lewis (Of Leeds Indie Poppers Blood Oranges), creating psych-pop taking in influences from the likes of Talking Heads, Animal Collective, Arthur Russell, Broken Social Scene and many more.
 
Drawing upon the eerie sounds of the Northern hemisphere and musically influenced by acts such as Feist, Nico and Anthony and the Johnsons, Copenhagen based Broken Twin’s simple setup of bass, piano, guitar, vocals and percussion intertwines in a whirlwind of creaking piano, floating vocals and cantankerous guitars.

Tenant’s Lagers Be Chilled returns to T in the Park

Be Chilled allows campers aged 18 or over to pre-order their cans of Tennent’s Lager and Magners Original Cideronline at www.tennents.com/bechilled and collect them, freshly chilled, when they arrive at the campsite over the weekend (12th – 14th July).
 
Be Chilled is quick, easy and hassle-free and has proved a big hit since Tennent’sintroduced the service in 2008.  Giving campers much less to carry to the campsite and allowing them to enjoy their Tennent’s Lager and Magners Original Cider ice cold, Be Chilled has fast become a festival essential for savvy T in the Park campers.
 
With less to carry to the campsite, fans are encouraged to reduce their carbon footprint and take the greenest and fastest route to this year’s festival by travelling withCitylink – T in the Park’s official transport partner.  All campers who place their Be Chilled orders before the 1st June 2013 will automatically be entered into a prize draw for the chance to win a VIP upgrade and complimentary bus travel to the festival from any location in Scotland, courtesy of Citylink.

Primal Scream, The Cribs and more set for Bingley Music Live

Primal ScreamEveryone at Bingley Music Live will undoubtedly come together to give a massive welcome to Primal Scream. Since the release of the inaugural Mercury Music Prize winning Screamadelica in 1991, the band has achieved the rare feat of becoming part of the shared consciousness of a generation of music fans. See the legendaryBobbie Gillespie performing classic hits from the band’s back catalogue, as well as new tracks from their forthcoming 10th album More Light, which is scheduled for release in May.

The three brothers from Wakefield that are The Cribs bring their brilliantly subversive, full throttle, indie mayhem to Bingley in a Yorkshire festival exclusive performance.  Hailed by Q magazine as "the biggest cult band in the UK", Gary, Ryan and Ross Jarman have enjoyed 10 successful years producing exceptional indie tunes. 2013 has got off to a flying start with the release of their ‘best of’ 22 track compilation Payola, as well as collecting theTeenage Cancer Trust Outstanding Contribution To Music Prize at the recent NME Awards. See what occurs whenThe Cribs’ famous ‘chaos element’ hits the main stage.

After frontman Miles Hunt and violinist Erica Nockalls’ star performance at last year’s BML we’re delighted to announce another exclusive Yorkshire festival set from The Wonder Stuff.  The West Midlands’ finest-ever export will bring their life-affirming exuberance to stir up the loins of Bingley with an outstanding discography that continues to stand the test of time. Expect the eight-legged groove machine to have everyone up on their feet. You’ll be going home with a big silly grin!

The acerbic tongued, South Shields songstress Natasha Haws is receiving some well-deserved radio airplay with her single Stranger which was picked as a BBC Introducing Discovery track at the end of last year. Singer-songwriter Natasha has won a devoted Northern following with her down-to-earth and often sarcastic tales about real-life experiences in her coastal hometown.  Selected for The Sun’s ‘One to Watch 2013’ list, Miss Haws has been praised for her ‘flawless vocals’ and mesmerising performances. Catch her at Bingley Music Live before she hits the big time.

Originating from Wakefield, Rose and the Howling North released debut album Cuckoo earlier this month. An exciting newcomer, Rose has an impressive musical heritage including singing at the Royal Albert Hall and filling Kate Bush’s shoes to duet with Peter Gabriel on tour. A festival veteran, Rose draws inspiration from many diverse influences with the album’s title track conjuring up images of Nancy Sinatra performing a QuentinTarantino soundtrack.

Holy Moly and the Crackers are a young indie-folk outfit from Newcastle making a name for themselves on the festival scene with their engaging and eclectic mix of sea shanties, hillbilly lullabies, bin-fire blues, gypsy dances and soul-searching ballads. Come and tap your toes along to the accordion, fiddle, guitar and the Holy Moly busking drum kit – complete with feathers and all.

LIFE’S A BEACH – A real beach on site and the perfect place for those who like to be beside the seaside but don't want to miss out on the music. With beach fun by day and beach parties by night, featuring live bands, DJ’s, morning exercise classes and some extra special performances.  Get ready for some fun in the sand.

KASHMIR CAFÉ – Housed in beautiful surroundings with authentic furniture, the Kashmir Café offers a sanctuary from the Festival madness, serving up delicious food, real ale and original music.

Rob da Bank says: "Bestival is ten years old this year and i always want our festival to stay fresh and new so im well pleased with the latest artist additions… Courtney Pine, legendary jazz musician, is going to open the whole birthday spectacular on the Thursday and from that point on we're gonna be treated to a plethora of new bands and talent from new indie upstarts Savages and London Grammar to incredible electronic explorations from Hieroglyphic Being and Evian Christ. Not forgetting returning hero James Blake whos part of the fabric of recent Bestivals. Hope you enjoy listening to all this lovely lot!"

James BlakeGetting into the buccaneering Bestival spirit we’re very pleased to announce that James Blake will be bringing his atmospheric bass adventures to captivate the crowds. One of the brightest talents to emerge in the past five years, James’s singular sound is one definitely not to be missed. We’re also very excited to announce that UK Jazz giant and all round legend Courtney Pine will be opening the show at our 10th Birthday party on Thursday evening. Renowned for pushing sonic boundaries, there couldn’t be a more apt opener for what is destined to be Bestival’s most mind-expanding extravaganza yet!
 
We’ll also have music across the weekend from reggae kingpin Max Romeo, super-bombastic doo-wop visionary Willy Moon, anthemic guitar pop types The 1975, classical-electronica crossover geniuses Clean Bandit, hotly-tipped electro-pop trio London Grammar, the frankly sublime The Child of Lov, 80s reggae supernova Musical Youth, footwork fanatic Evian Christ, Brooklyn punks Parquet Courts, genre colliding six-piece Molotov Jukebox, alt folkers Moulettes and the jaw-droppingly authentic 'Introducing' recreate 'Discovery' live. 

There will also be plenty more live music from Filthy Boy, Wheelchair Sports Camp, Ady Suleiman, Hudson Taylor, Champs, Woodpecker Wooliams, Lloyd Yates, Barbarossa, The Keepsakes, Isaiah Dreads, Parlour Flames, Charley Macaulay and Devilman.

Tenth anniversary late night booty shaking action will also be in plentiful supply with a series of super-fat soundsystems due to be announced in the coming months but just to whet your appetites we can reveal that Numbers will be showcasing Tweakaholic featuring Jackmaster & Spencer, sleazy four-four from Bicep, there will be Chicago vibes from Hieroglyphic Being, heady jams from Addison Groove, underground party joints from Rinse FM’s Oneman, consciousness expanding sounds from Psychemagik, bass alchemy from Happa and dreamy euphoria from the one and only Chris Coco.

Plus there will be deck destroying sets from PBR Streetgang, DJ Scotch Egg, Misty Conditions , Bill Brewster, Copy Paste Soul, Krysko, Applescal, Pete Gooding B2B Danny Whitehead, Pathaan, Johnno (Bugged Out), Sunday Best Forum Allstars, Flying White Dots, March Hare  and Gutterslut.

Björk set for exclusive Berlin Festival show

BjorkOn 6th and 7th September, Berlin Festival will once again take take over the historic Tempelhof Airport and the organisers are now thrilled to reveal that this year's edition will see Icelandic pop icon Björk headline the festival on Saturday! The exceptional artist has been crossing genre boundaries with albums such as Debut, Homogenic or Vespertine, and keeps on influencing myriads of acts across the globe. With her current, app-based album, Biophilia, Björk, once again, proved to be one of the true pioneers of pop music. At Tempelhof Airport, she will play her only show in Germany as well as the final concert of her Biophilia tour.

With Oddfellows, Tomahawk will release their first album in seven years. Alternative rock sounds galore will spread across the airfield on Friday. DJ Shadow, the man who released the first album solely based on samples, has also been added to the line-up. He will get behind the decks at Club Xberg on Friday. Delphic took their electro pop sound to the next level with their sophomore album, Collections, which they will perform at Tempelhof Airport on Saturday. 

AlunaGeorge will take to the stage with their their debut album, Body Music, on Friday putting forward a sound that mixes 2Step, R&B and pop. Irish folk band Villagers will play songs off their second album, Awayland the same day then on Saturday there will be a special show from Die Orsons, who caused a stir with their track Horst & Monika at the German Bundesvision Song Contest last year.

We're also adding to Club THF's line-up with the Berlin-based DJ duo Tale Of Us supporting Ellen Allien on Saturday. With his debut EP, DJ and producer Ben Pearce from Manchester reached number one on the Deep House Charts. On Friday, he'll join John Talabot behind the DJ booth at Club THF.
