The dancefloor sensation, Freestylers, will be bringing their fast moving, electro-rocking monster to 2011s Summer Break, while Brighton-based Krafty Kuts will be heading down to Cornwall this summer, offering yet more phenomenal sounds through his unique blend of breakbeat, funk and hip-hop. UK Chart success, Nero, completes the current line up for Summer Break, bringing the hugely successful dubstep tunes to the Newquay beach. With more acts to be announced this 96 hour party is the only beach to be on this festival season.
Summer Break is the only way to celebrate the end of exams and the official start of the summer. Having provided the perfect setting and line-up since 2005, 2011 is set to be the best yet. Providing 96 hours of party time for UK students and set on a private beach in Cornwall offering a private student village of caravans, Summer Break is the ultimate party destination for students across the nation.
A special and rare appearance by the award-wining visionary Chris Cunningham is today confirmed for The Big Chill 2011. Cult film-maker, musician, photographer and producer Chris Cunningham is responsible for some of the most iconic music videos ever made, amongst a myriad of other accomplishments. He has been dubbed ‘Dangerously ahead of his time’ by The Guardian and ‘A startlingly original visual artist’ by The Telegraph. On the back of a sold out show at the Royal Festival Hall in May last year and recent collaborations with Gil Scott-Heron and Grace Jones, Cunningham returns to the stage this summer. He will be closing the Deer Park Stage on Sunday, following the set by headliners Rodrigo y Gabriela. Cunningham will create a sight and sound spectacular, bringing The Big Chill to a close in true style.
Bringing a slice of Americana to Herefordshire this summer will be North Mississippi Allstars Duo as they perform their Grammy Award-nominated Southern blues atop the Deer Park Stage on Sunday. Briefly appearing as Carson Daly’s house band on TV in the USA, North Mississippi Allstars Duo have also recently supported Robert Plant and The Band of Joy, who also appear at The Big Chill this year.
With their second album The Body of Christ and The Legs of Tina Turner nominated in the Choice Music Prize for Best Album of the Year back on home turf in Ireland, Fight Like Apes are flying high. Having supported the likes of stadium noise-masters The Prodigy, Fight Like Apes are more than equipped to take to The Revellers’ stage on Friday. Recently dubbed by NME as ‘the rowdiest live band in the world’ anyone needing a wake-up call from the laid back atmosphere of The Big Chill need look no further.
Manning the highly respected dubstep label DMZ and club night of the same name, duo Digital Mystikz will appear on The People’s Ear Stage on Friday. Garnering support from the likes of the late John Peel and Annie Nightingale as well as many of their peers, the pair otherwise known as Mala and Coki are considered central to the dupstep scene. Added to The People’s Ear Stage on Sunday is Bristolian Julio Bashmore. The house music-loving DJ, influenced by his hometown’s obsession for all things low frequency, steps up to the decks to prove why the highly influential Claude Von Stroke signed Bashmore up to his Dirtybird label.
The imaginatively named London based dupstep duo Stinkahbell hit up the decks at Starburst on Friday. Expect galactic sounding samples and deep buzzing bass. Usually found playing bass with chart-topping NYC indie darlings, Vampire Weekend, Baio appears at The Big Chill this summer at Starburst on Sunday in his DJ guise. Baio – Vampire Weekend DJ set promises an eclectic mix echoing his passion for dance music peppered with indie, nu-wave and afrobeat. Combining the talents of six London and Watford-based producers and DJs, True Tiger have between them released, produced and remixed tracks by artists including Professor Green, Enter Shikari, Taio Cruz, Skepta and many other big names from the pop and urban music worlds. For their set on Sunday at Starburst, True Tiger, in their live form, will meld together grime with hip-hop, house and more. Formerly DJ Clipz, infamous in the d‘n’b scene, the restyled DJ and producer Redlight is up next showcasing his new unique take on garage, breaks and dubstep. Lastly for Starburst’s Sunday offerings is DJ Distance, an originator from the South London homeland of dubstep, Distance brings to the table his own progressive and experimental take on the genre.

The T Break judging panel, made up of 13 the most highly respected music industry professionals in the country, have been busy pouring over more than 1,000 demos of the freshest unsigned artists in Scotland since the call for entries closed on 11th April. Demos came in from all corners of the nation and with genres ranging from Raggle Taggle to Dark Wave, the judges undoubtedly had the hardest task of T Break’s 15 year history.
The following 16 acts have been chosen by the judges to rock the T Break Stage this summer, joining a knock out T in the Park bill which includes Arctic Monkeys, Coldplay, Foo Fighters, The Strokes, Beyoncé, Pulp, The Script, Plan B, Slash, Tinie Tempah, Tom Jones, Jessie J and many more.

Let the countdown to T in the Park commence!
George Kyle, Head of Sponsorship at Tennent’s Lager says: “The competition this year has been outstanding and really reflects what’s going on in Scotland’s grassroots music scene. Yet again we’re so proud to be supporting these new artists by giving them such a great platform to perform and boost their music careers, sharing a bill with some of the best homegrown and international headliners on the planet.”
Dave McGeachan at DF Concerts says: “The final line up is looking fantastic, with a great musical variety and lots of different genres. These 16 acts represent the most exciting new Scottish music around and I can’t wait to see them take to the stage at T in the Park”.
Jim Gellatly, presenter of In:Demand Uncut said: “Again a very high quality of entry, which made the task of selecting a final 16 all the more difficult. There are a bunch of acts that didn’t even make the final cut that I’ll be following up for future airplay on In:Demand Uncut. Yet again T Break has shown the incredible wealth of new talent our country has to offer.”
Now confirmed for Saturday’s Big Top line up is seminal punk poet John Cooper Clarke. Having risen to stardom back in the late 70’s and early 80’s for support slots for the likes of The Sex Pistols, The Fall, Joy Division, Buzzcocks, Sioxsie and the Banshees, Elvis Costello and New Order, John hit the headlines again in 2007 when his poem ‘Out of Control Fairground’ was printed inside Arctic Monkeys’ single ‘Flourescent Adolescent’. Also joining John on Saturday’s Big Top line-up will be the Tito Robin Trio, an acoustic folk treat from the French Music Office whose namesake front man was described by the late great Charlie Gillett as “…one of the world’s great musicians and visionaries”.
Following the critically acclaimed release last year of ‘Where Do The Children Play’, a Cat Stevens classic that was reviewed by the man himself as “better than his own”, Liverpool soul stars The Christians will be bringing their distinctive take on soul to Wychwood’s Independent Stage on the Sunday. Also confirmed for the Sunday line-up are Afro-Celtic dance band and wonderfully monikered Baka Beyond whose fiery rhythms, enchanting harmonies and spectacular dancing will mesmerise and thrill in equal measure. The uniquely multinational Afrobeat band Baraka, which boasts members from Ghana, Senegal, Dominca and, bizarrely Northern and Southern Ireland will be showcasing their fantastic blend of reggae, calypso, blues and soca. And finally yet more musical loveliness from the French Music Office in the form of Chapelier Fou (or Mad Hatter in English) who blend classical melodies and arrangement with electronic beats and soundscapes.
Leading the charge with the latest comedy additions to the Wychwood line-up is none-other-than comedy stalwart Robin Ince. Having started his comedy career as a writer, working on shows including Alistair McGowan’s Big Impression, V Graham, Norton and Meet Ricky Gervais, his first of many collaborations with the Extras star, Ince appeared with Gervais, Stephen Merchant and Jimmy Carr in the 2001 Edinburgh show Rubbernecker, and regularly supports Gervais on tour. He also appeared in one episode of The Office, playing interviewee Stewart Foot. That role inspired his tongue-in-cheek solo Edinburgh debut in 2004, and he has returned to the Fringe every year since. In 2005 he started erudite comedy night The Book Club, loosely based around bad literature, which won him the innovation award at the 2006 Chortle Awards as well as the outstanding contribution to comedy accolade at that year’s Time Out awards. In 2007, he was named best compere at the Chortle Awards.
Ray Peacock is a well known writer and comedian who, as well as headlining at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival for several years, has compered and written shows for the BBC. One of the most famous characters Ian created was a brash, loud Yorkshire man called Ray Peacock and had several successful shows appearing as him. Unfortunately, this character is no more but Ian continues to use the name “Ray Peacock” as his comedic stage name to avoid confusion with his other activities such as acting and writing.
Iszi Lawrence is a comedian to watch. The awkward atheist poses a lean figure onstage that is counterbalance to the crackle of intelligent, silly jokes that drum through her. She’s resident compere of the Lil Fat Comedy Club Witney, has had sell out shows at the Camden, Brighton, Oxfringe and Edinburgh fringe. Her debut show Matter of Tact was Time Out Recommended and London Lite Comedy Pick. Radio credits include appearances on BBC Radio 1 s The Milkrun, BBC radio Oxford’s Breakfast show and BBC 7 as a BBC New Comedy Award semi-finalist, 2005. She has also written and performed for Resonance FM’s The Ten Minute Sketch Show. Iszi is host compere of The Lil’ Fat Comedy Club.
Last but by no means least on the comedy front, Matt Richardson was a finalist in both So You Think You’re Funny 2010 and The Chortle Student Comedy Award 2010 as well as being the 2010 winner of the Newbury Comedy Festival’s new act competition “You Must be Joking”, all by the age of 19. Matt is a young starter, who has regularly proved that he can cut it with the big boys. “Full of verve and energy …quirky asides brought sparkle to his act…undeniably well-told.” – Chortle

Blending pop with electro and rap Example, otherwise known as Elliot Cleave, has also enjoyed much chart success recently with his breakthrough second album Won’t Go Quietly and is sure to get The Big Chill crowd dancing this year. With over 10 million YouTube views for videos such as their risqué take on Ke$ha’s Tik Tok, comedy/music trio The Midnight Beast appear at The Big Chill alongside fellow Revellers’ Stage performers. Also stepping up to the mic will be Katy B, who has previously tackled vocal duties on tracks by dubstep heavyweights Magnetic Man and since gone on to carve her own path to stardom with the release of her critically acclaimed debut album Katy On A Mission. Completing Saturday’s line-up so far are leading grime MC Devlin and classical/techno cross over trio The Brandt Brauer Frick Ensemble who have assembled an increased ten-piece live band for The Big Chill set.

As a destination for those who like to ‘kick back’ the Body & Soul area will increase this year offering more chance than ever before to truly ‘Chill’ through holistic and therapeutic pursuits and a new ambient stage. 2011 will be more family friendly than ever as the first festival-within-a-festival appears in the form of The Little Chill, with many activities on offer from local groups such as Colwall Primary School’s Friends of Colwall and Ledbury Scout Group. Combining the kids’ area, midnight movies programmed especially for children to wind down and a little something for the parents too, The Little Chill ensures festival goers of all ages will be catered for, open to family ticket holders exclusively and linked directly to family camping for ease and enjoyment. With many original audience members and performers from The Big Chill’s past now attending with their own families Tom Middleton will be hosting DJ Dads, special sessions taking place in The Little Chill for friends and family young and old. The parental disc jockeys performing will be announced shortly.
“I am very pleased to unveil the first announcement for The Big Chill, ushering in the festival’s impressive 17th year. Having been at the forefront as a ‘boutique’ event we have put together a programme that reflects The Big Chill’s heritage whilst offering up new and exciting developments for our audiences old and new alike. To be able to offer such well respected and diverse performances, from our headliners to our international artists and breakthrough names is a true pleasure and we are thrilled to be able to evolve the musical content of the festival. What’s more, we are very lucky this summer as two of our headline acts are UK festival exclusives which is brilliant. In turn, The Big Chill 2011 will welcome the return of some key elements that have defined the festival over its 17 years including a much enhanced The Big Chill Radio, which will see it having its own stage, and Tom Middleton who, having played at every Big Chill since the very beginning is more involved in the festival than ever this year curating his own stage. Of course The Big Chill extends to much more than our musical line-up and festival goers will once again be able to enjoy the Art Trail in full and we are extremely pleased to be working with the local community to radically expand aspects such as our family and children’s entertainment through the creation of The Little Chill; a festival within in its own right. 2011 is a celebration of all that The Big Chill has been throughout its history and a bold step forward to what will be a very bright future. We look forward to seeing you there.” Melvin Benn, Festival Republic

Taking place at Zrce Beach on Pag off the coast of Croatia from 1st to 3rd July 2011 and boasting one of the best line-ups out there, Hideout Festival is about to establish itself as the coolest dance party of the summer, giving Ibiza a run for its money.
The indisputable First Lady of Circo Loco and Queen of DC10 Ibiza, Tania Vulcano was there when it all began on those Monday mornings back in 1999 and continues to be a beacon for quality underground music. Tania is a global representative for the brand and continent-hops every weekend to meet the persistent demand for her music. Unsurprisingly, in many ways it is Tania’s sound itself that acts as a showcase for what Circo Loco is all about.
An old school Circo Loco DJ from the early days, Andrew Grant is a former American marine that has maintained his relationship with the club and brand ever since being invited to play by Cirillo, his mentor, in 2001. This represented the start of a now 10 year association with the party, during which time Andrew assured his place as a front line combatant of the Circo Loco sound and party attitude.
One of the longest serving residents at DC10, Dan Ghenacia is still the major influence of underground electronica in France, thanks principally to his leadership of the celebrated, but now defunct, Freak n Chic label and booking operation. His acute understanding of how DC10 works, makes him a key asset to the Circo Loco parties and his swathing tech-house and abyss-deep grooves are effortless winners both on the Terrace and Inside.
Catherine Britton aka Cassy is widely regarded as the Queen of underground house and techno, if not that then certainly she’s in line for the throne. With Caribbean roots, she grew up in England and then mainly Austria, where she developed a deep love for the arts and worked professionally as a vocalist and in theatre. Making her debut at DC10 in Ibiza in 2010, Cassy enthralled the Circo Loco masses as she weaved her customary mixed bag of sounds ranging from deep house to hard techno through classic acid house, strengthening her status of one of the Circo Loco New Era.
One of the few residents for Circo Loco at DC10 who can say they play practically every single week, Garagem is as her name suggests – one of the deepest groovers that spins at the club. A deeply passionate spirit for pushing solid, underground house and garage, in its truest forms, Garagem has been resident at DC10 since 2008.Her mixed Brazilian and Romanian roots make her truly representative of the international movement that is Circo Loco.
Gauthier DM French DJ who became part of the Circo Loco and DC10 fold in 2010, impressing in his appearances, which included the Closing Party After and the 2011 New Year’s Day celebrations. Brother of fellow Circo Loco resident, DJ W!LD, Gauthier is seen as one of the next generation DJ/producers to come out of France and is strongly associated with the prominent Robsoul Recordings, run by Chris Carrier since 2000 and recognised as one of the most respected underground house music labels around.
