In fact, Texan-born Rodney’s talents as a musician are as plentiful as the many instruments he expertly plays side by side. The London based singer/songwriter masterfully plays two guitars at once or both guitar and piano simultaneously, however it is his ability to mix this extraordinary skill with his own heartfelt lyrics and rich, soulful voice that have led to Rodney Branigan becoming one of the most followed global performers of the moment.

Friday 16th August:

Abdul Tee-Jay's Rokoto (Sierra Leone)

Abdul Tee-Jay and Rokoto is a seven-piece band with several albums including, Kanka Kuru, Fire Dombolo and E'Go Lef Pan You. They have toured extensively in many countries. At a very young age Abdul Tee-Jay, somewhat secretly, learnt to play guitar. At that time there was music coming into the port of Freetown, Sierra Leone from many different regions. Abdul was influenced by all of these sounds and joined local bands. His family were all very academic and in 1974 he went to study in Virginia, USA. While there he took the opportunity to learn more guitar, and use better instruments, he also joined a band called Spice and learnt to play the dulcimer. In 1979 Abdul came to Britain to work in banking but met other musicians and decided to form a band called African Connection. In 1982 he decided to concentrate on more typical African music, and a pan-African band, African Culture, came into being. Even this was not satisfying so Abdul resolved to base all his music on Sierra Leone street and folk music. In 1988, the band changed it’s name to Rokoto, the nickname of part of Freetown. Abdul's music is still evolving and he now includes beautiful acoustic palm wine music.

Kasaï Masaï (Congo)

Based in London and led by Voodoo King Nickens Nkoso, Kasaï Masaï brings us the traditional sound of the most remote equatorial villages with an urban twist. Named after a river, Kasai lies in the heart of the rain forest where many tribes such as the Pygmies still maintain their traditional lifestyles. The Masai, just like the Baka, are another dignified tribe whose lives still centre around a nomadic existence.

The Turbans (UK/Turkey/Bulgaria/Greece)

The Turbans is an international musical collective travelling the world on a quest to discover and create great music. Starting in Nepal in 2009, when classical violinist Darius Luke Thompson and guitarist Oshan Mahony played together for the first time in Kathmandu, they travelled by bicycle to India where they formed a band that has played music all the way through Pakistan, India, Turkey, Greece, Poland, Spain and the UK. With a mix of traditional balkan, klezmer, turkish, celtic and greek traditional folk sounds, their reputation as radical performers of real musical substance and prodigious energy is growing and growing.

Kabula (Brazil)

Founded by Mestre Carlo Alexandre Teixeira da Silva, Kabula is a community organisation that aims to connect and inspire people. At the heart of their project is Capoeira Angola, an exhilarating and elegant blend of dance, play, fight and music of Afro-Brazilian origin.

DJ Koichi Sakai (Japan)

During his musical career, Koichi has collaborated in various clubs in London with Gilles Peterson, Snowboy, Phil Asher, Patrick Forge, Nostalgia77, Quantic, Bugz In The Attic, Broadcite, Mr Bongo Soundsystem, Sofrito, to name but a few.

His “Afrobeat Vibration”, now in its fifth year, is London’s top underground event. Dele’s Afrobeat pedigree is impeccable. He was keys player and a musical director in Fela Kuti’s Egypt 80 and subsequently with Fela’s son Femi Kuti’s Positive Force. Dele’s pulsating live shows demonstrate his vision of Afrobeat – one that is faithful to the original blueprint, but also clearly bears Dele’s own DNA, expanding the horizons of the genre.

Future Swing Stories (New Zealand)

Their sound merges a forgotten era of Swing, Jazz and dixieland with the contemporary sound of big band breaks & bad boy bass – sometimes known as Electro Swing, they prefer "Ghetto Swing!" Their music, although very important to the "electro swing" movement, borrows heavily from old school hiphop breaks, Nu-school bass lines, dusty drum loops and swing era samples arriving at a sound that quenches even the most discerning of the dance music generations thirst. This vintage revamp will surely leave you with a new understanding of what it really means to “shake a tail feather”.

One For Sorrow Interview

We had the chance to catch up with Jason (guitarist) and Joe (vocals) from metal band One For Sorrow before their first appearance at this years Bloodstock.

SFG: What was the first thing you did this morning?
Jason: Honestly, (after two fags)had a coffee while looking at cymbals online for our drummer Ross, as he hits the f**kers so hard his China now looks like an Apple with a bite out of it. After making a few calls, seems Raza Khan (drum tech for Orange Goblin) might be able to help us out there luckily.
Joe: Took a slash.

SFG: What will be the last thing you do tonight?
JasonSmoke two fags
Joe:  Not telling

SFG: What's the first thing you put on your festival rider?
JasonGood strong coffee
Joe: Beer

SFG: What is the strangest thing you have seen at a festival?
JasonJames Hetfield asking legendary drummers in the backstage area of Download, if they wanna play a few tracks with Metallica coz Lars was a no show, they were lined up like excited schoolboys. I was bummed that Lars would not be there, but it made for a very interesting show.
Joe: Shampoo (the twat girl band) at Reading

SFG: Do you have a pre-performance ritual, if so what is it?
JasonWarm up via jumping and dancing in the most silly way possible to the band who are on before us (in the band area out of view obviously)
Joe: Warm up vocal chords by screaming and think dark thoughts

SFG: What has been your favourite festival of the year so far?
JasonBloodstock and its not happened yet!
Joe: Download

SFG: What gig are you most looking forward to next?
JasonPlaying? Bloodstock!!! or Watching? Black Sabbath at the 02 in December!!!, seen em twice with Ozzy, once with Bill Ward and Once with Tommy Clufetos, so can't wait. I saw em once with Ronnie James Dio too and legend that he was, it just wasn't Sabbath without Ozzy.
Joe: Slayer @ Bloodstock

SFG: What would be your dream place to play a gig?
JasonThe LA Forum in the 70's supporting Zeppelin!! so that ain't gonna happen! Download Mainstage or Hellfest Mainstage
Joe: Brixton

SFG: Who would you love to tour with?
JasonDown or Black Label Society
Joe: Down

SFG: How was the 'Backs to the Wall' EP received by your fans?
JasonI don't like the word fan, I think its degrading I prefer, Sorrow brothers and sisters, they love it and we are eternally grateful that they get what we're about.
Joe: So far so good

SFG: What can the fans at Bloodstock look forward to for your performance on the New Blood Stage?
JasonMeat and Potatoes Stoner Groove.Metal you can nod your head to that makes you wanna drink beer. Some of our songs are more Stoner, some of them are more groove metal, some of them have a bit of classic rock feel but we like to bring it all together and can't really be pigeon holed as one genre. Just depends on which set we play, but either way we know you'll be in for a good time.
Joe: A fucking heavy/grooving set of mosh up madness

SFG: To those that don't really know you, sum up the band and what it represents in one sentence.
JasonGood time old fashioned headbangin jams with big riffs and classic values.
Joe: One For Sorrow is a groove metal band with a lot of different influences coming in from all four members that represents the pleasure and pain, the good times and the bad that life throws at us, all rounded off into the beautiful sound of metal!

You can catch Jason and the rest of One For Sorrow on the New Blood Stage on Saturday at this years Bloodstock!  Check their new video for Into the Woods here:

DANCE TO THE RADIO STAGE AT LEEDS

Leeds Festival welcome the return of the influential and innovative Leeds-based record label Dance To The Radio who will be taking over the BBC Introducing Stage on Thursday 22nd August and kicking off the weekend at Leeds in style with the following live bands:

Formed in 2010 out of the ashes of a Leeds-based rock band, Black Moth were seduced by the brutal and hypnotic lure of the riff, to emerge translucent, skinned and bleary eyed from their cocoon as a ferocious kick-ass heavy rock outfit.

Sheffield’s The Crookes are a four-piece at the forefront of the nascent new pop movement in the UK guitar scene. Set to release their second LP on legendary indie label Fierce Panda this summer and with a cult following already in the bag, be sure to see them for a dance on Thursday night in Leeds.

Manchester’s finest Dutch Uncles are a group who have pitched their tents firmly in pop’s left-field with crashing guitars, electronic dueling xylophones, and lead singer Duncan Wallis' eye-popping dance moves.

Leeds five-piece Hookworms are often bracketed among the latest wave of psychedelic rock. By only using their initials to avoid any form of ‘celebrity status’ adds to the mystery of the band’s deep, emotive lyrics involving attempted suicide and depression.

Leeds’ Menace Beach is the project of members of existing local bands with Rob from Pulled Apart By Horses, Nestor from Sky Larkin and Matt from Hookworms. Their hazy grunge songs have seen comparisons with Splashh and Swim Deep.
