Martha Wainwright announced for SummerTyne Americana Festival

SummerTyne Americana Festival is pleased to announce Martha Wainwright as headliner, with special guest Sam Amidon, at The Sage Gateshead on Saturday 20th July. Opening for Matthew E. White will be Nashville’s finest gospel group, The McCrary Sisters on Friday 19th July.

SummerTyne Americana Festival takes place over three days at The Sage Gateshead from Friday 19th– Sunday 21st July 2013 (full line up below).

A fantastic bill with two of the most powerful voices in the folk-Americana firmament, Martha Wainwright, the youngest of the Wainwright-McGarrigle clan, with her hugely expressive voice and arsenal of powerful songs, writes shamelessly confessional and sometimes vengeful lyrics. Yet to perform in the North East since the release of her most recent critically acclaimed album “Come Home to Mama,”written during a particularly difficult patch for Wainwright following the death of her mother and the birth of her first child, we are thrilled to welcome her to SummerTyne. Opening for Martha will be Vermont born folk singer Sam Amidon on the back of his debut release “Bright Sunny South” for Nonesuch records.  Another powerful and distinctive new voice, Sam has recently collaborated with Bill Frisell, Nico Muhly and Beth Orton and performed with Martha Wainwright in NYC.

Also announced, for their first ever visit to the UK, are Nashville legends The McCrary Sisters. The gospel choir of choice for many of the big Nashville country, soul and gospel artists, such as BeBe & CeCe Winans, Mike Farris, Patty Griffin, Charlie Louvin and even Bob Dylan, these four sisters – Ann, Regina, Deborah and Alfreda –  are the last word in gospel singing as it should be performed, full of power, passion and pure soulfulness. Thrillingly, as a Gateshead special, they will also lead and perform with the SummerTyne Community Gospel Choir for a very special gospel brunch at The Sage Gateshead on Saturday 20th at 11am.

See Regina McCrary live here with the Chicago Mass Choir.

With such a strong contingent of Nashville artists this year, Festival Programmer Tamsin Austin says:

“As more and more Americana acts than ever pick up awards across the globe, we are thrilled to be throwing open our doors once again to welcome this year’s contingent of friends from Nashville and across the US and UK, as well as the many dedicated music lovers who support the scene, for another jam-packed weekend of first class music.”

SummerTyne Americana Festival offers a sizzling gumbo of American roots music – from fiery tex-mex to classic country and blues, the newest southern soul and Americana, to cajun, folk and bluegrass.  Taking place on the south side of the River Tyne, in and around the iconic music venue The Sage Gateshead, it promises a selection of the best Americana music in one of the most stunning city locations in the world.

With an incredible FREE outdoor stage bill including among many others, The David Wax Museum, Tom Russell and Polly & The Billets Doux,  cajun suppers with Steve Riley & The Mamou Playboys, musical boat trips up the River Tyne, a come-and-sing community gospel choir, film programme and an exclusive exhibition of art work by Jon Langford of The Waco Brothers entitled ‘Nashville Radio’, is there any place you’d rather be this summer than south of the River Tyne?

Digitalism, The Joy Formidable and more for Standon Calling

Signed to ultra-hip label, Kitsuné, the duo have been filling dance floors to bursting point since 2004 with their indie, electronic crossover tunes. As adept at DJ sets as they are live performance Digitalism blend the two expertly, they will be the perfect climax to a day of festival partying. Sure to deliver a much welcomed tidal wave of dreamy, euphoric rock to the festival, The Joy Formidable are the next addition. The Welsh trio have recently toured with Muse and are due to head out on a mammoth tour of the States imminently, their set at Standon Calling will no doubt see an energetic, riff-laden return to the UK.

Also joining 2013’s line-up are The Music’s Rob Harvey and The Streets’ Mike Skinner, performing as their collaborative project The D.O.T. The duo’s album combines their respective influences, twisting out an audio-cocktail dubbed by the NME as “an indie-rap-disco-pop-electronica-crossover”, a mix that will have the Standon Calling crowd bouncing this summer. Speaking to 6 Music today about the need for a project after The Streets Mike Skinner said:

“Any band is kinda a bit like quicksand, it gradually dries. I had it with The Streets and [Rob] had it with The Music, it’s like ‘hey we can do anything we want!’… Five albums down it’s like ‘right you’ve got to write another song about breaking up with a girl', and Rob’s band had to find another riff. And that’ll happen to The D.O.T. but now we’re in that second stage bit where we know what it is”

Further additions come in the form of Psychedelic London-based rockers Toy, and hip-hop turntablist DJ Yoda who will be joined the bonkers Balkan sounds of Trans Siberian Marching Band.

Elsewhere on the line-up Public Service Broadcasting, The Skints, Shields, Lazarus & The Plane Crash, Rotten Hill Gang, London Afrobeat Collective, Band of Buriers, Trenton & Free Radicalalso add to Standon Calling’s kaleidoscopic offering.

Weekend tickets, currently available at the tier one price of £99 are available to order fromwww.standon-calling.com.

2013 theme – ‘Running away from the Circus’
Fans and tickets holders can now plan their all important costume as Standon Calling reveals this year’s theme. In the past the festival has seen sea monsters, zombies, greek gods and more wacky creations dance across the fields. 2013 calls for interpretations on the theme ‘Running Away From the Circus’.

For the first time ever, the festival will house an actual on-site circus with The Standon Calling Big Topshowcasing live circus acts by day and a fantastic array of bands and DJs by night. Everywhere festival-goers venture they’ll stumble upon pockets of performance, themed sideshows and secret areas.

Festival-goers can actually become part of the circus and perform at Standon Calling in front of friends, family and fellow festival-goers. The art of illusion, clowning, fire juggling, slack rope walking and even violin playing whilst stilt walking will all be possible. Further details on ticket prices including two days of circus training and workshops are to be revealed soon.

During the day people can enjoy a drink in the on-site pub, The Strongman’s Arms, which will host sessions including the Science of Building a Human Pyramid, the Art of WhippingConquer Your Fear of ClownsArt Macabre Life Drawing and a Circus Smell Safari.

Late at night the Forest of Freaks will be the place to be. Here the dark underbelly of the circus is revealed as the lunatics that entertain during the day let their collective hair down, indulge in their dreams and offer a variety of nocturnal entertainment.

Band of Skulls are 2nd headliner for Standon Calling

Their gritty, harmony-heavy tracks have won them the admiration and respect of both fans and critics on an international scale, seeing the band rocket from their Southampton origins to shows in Austin’s South By South West and opening for Muse on their current American tour.

Band of Skulls

Also taking to the stage at Standon Calling are some of the hottest, must-see acts for 2013 including electro-pop outfits Bastille and AlunaGeorge. Bastille are well known to many given the extensive radio plays of singles including “Bad Blood” and “Flaws/Icarus”, which featured on the soundtrack to TV hit, Made In Chelsea. Coming second in the BBC’s Sound of 2013 poll and with a BRIT Award Critics Choice shortlist place under their belts, AlunaGeorge may well prove to be one of this summer’s highlights. The next addition comes in the form of the dandy-esque King Charles. The solo artist who has toured and recorded with none other than Mumford & Sons will be adding a touch of psychedelic infused folk and glam pop to the proceedings.

Swing/hip-hop, reggae fusion, rock n’ roll, electronic and ska sounds are all covered elsewhere in the kaleidoscopic additions to Standon Calling in the form of The Correspondents, Gentlemen’s Dub Club, Revere, Belakiss, Bibelots, New Groove Formation and Stills. Local singer-songwriter Annie Dale is also confirmed in the first of a number of Hertfordshire acts to play Standon Calling this year.

Early bird tickets are now sold out. However, tier one weekend tickets can be purchased at a very affordable £99 each. In the pipeline are more exciting announcements for Standon Calling which will unveil further live acts and DJs, details of art, theatre and fringe entertainment, family-friendly activities, this year’s theme, micro-venues and a plethora of other attractions.

De La Soul to headline Standon Calling 2013

Hip-hop legends De La Soul will headline Standon Calling 2013, which takes place in the grounds of Standon Lordship manor house, Hertfordshire from 2nd – 4th August 2013, next summer.

The New York trio’s set comes nearly a quarter of a century after the release of their debut masterpiece, 3 Feet High and Rising, a record that was named ‘Album of the Year’ by NME in 1989, proof of the global, cross-genre impact De La Soul have made throughout their career. A catalogue featuring Me Myself and IThe Magic Number and Grind Date is sure to see the fields of Standon reverberating to the sound of alternative hip-hop’s godfathers.

De La Soul

"We are delighted to have De La Soul headline Standon Calling. It's an act I've wanted to bring to Standon for a while," says festival founder Alex Trenchard. "De La Soul is the first in a series of exciting announcements and the calibre of entertainment we have planned for 2013 is incredibly high. We can't think of an equivalent three-day festival out there that offers such a competitively priced weekend ticket."

Festival-goers can ensure their place at Standon Calling 2013 for just £85 per weekend ticket by taking up the 'early bird' offer, a snip in comparison to many other UK festivals whose prices have soared into three figures in the past few years. Furthermore, by purchasing four or more tickets in one transaction festival-goers can benefit from the 'super early bird group discount' and bag themselves a weekend ticket for just £79 each. Last but by no means least, making Standon Calling super family friendly, entry for under 13-s is free when accompanied by a ticket-holing adult.

Much more than simply a music festival, Standon Calling once again promises to be a three-day party jam-packed with interactive theatre, art installations, a swimming pool, kids area and kids' activities, onsite nightclub and the ever-popular fancy dress. 2011’s theme, ‘Gods and Monsters’, encouraged 13 girls to turn themselves into a giant caterpillar which later found itself face-to-face with a ten man strong Loch Ness monster. The effort and enthusiasm proves there is more than one UK festival that can scoop the fancy dress crown. And lest we forget our canine friends who are not only welcome on-site but also invited to join Standon Calling’s annual dog show.
