Brownstock Festival has held a competition through their Facebook App for unsigned bands, giving them the chance to promote themselves and win a set at the festival, which is held in Essex on the weekend of 30 August to 1 September. Brit Award winners, The Fratellis andThe Pigeon Detectives, who are headlining the festival, were part of the panel to choose the band they want to see.
Brownstock Festival had over 1000 bands apply to play for the 2013 festival. For The Brown Family, who run the music and arts festival on their farm near Chelmsford in Essex, supporting smaller unsigned bands has been a big part of the festival's ethos since the festival began in 2005. The family personally listened to every band that applied and selected 100 acts. Then, to select the final winners of 13 available slots these were put to the vote.
Brit Award winning band The Fratellis and The Pigeon Detectives who are both playing at the festival have picked their band. Other judges were Festival site Festivals for All www.festivalsforall.com, record label Noise Kitten and the public, who were all asked to pick their favourite acts from the 100 strong shortlist.
The Fratellis have chosen London Band Disemboweled By Sharks. Barry Fratelli said "I'm a big fan of Bristol-esque trip hop and acid jazz and this is the sort of thing I'd like to discover if I was walking round at a festival… bonus points for the double bass."
The Pigeon Detectives have picked duo from Essex, Frett, as their band to play in September.
The Pigeon Detectives said "I like their intricate yet low key sound. It's mechanical but there's real warmth to it. There's something very promising here…"
The competition was all run through Brownstock's Facebook Band App. This meant that all the Brownstock audience could easily explore and listen to the music of the bands that had applied to play at the festival. Meanwhile all the bands that applied, even the ones that weren't picked, had an easy way to promote themselves to a new audience. 5000 people took part in the public vote for their winner.
Adam Brown director of Brownstock Festival said "We have been looking for better ways to help unsigned bands who work hard get noticed. We were overwhelmed this year by the support for the bands and the number of people who have taken part in the vote on our app. We can't wait to hear these acts play as there really is some amazing talent from Essex and beyond".
The full list of the bands that have won the competition is here:
The sun is set to shine on T in the Park’s 20th year celebrations, and with temperatures in Kinross currently soaring into the 20s, organisers are gearing up to welcome 85,000 music fans per day to the sunny Scottish countryside this weekend. When Snoop Dogg (aka Snoop Lion) played T in the Park in 2005, he brought a touch of California sunshine to the fields of Kinross, and with Snoop set to return to play the festival’s 20th year bash on Saturday, it appears as though he’ll be once again bringing the sunshine with him.
Geoff Ellis, Festival Director, said:“The sun is splitting the sky here in Kinross as we add the finishing touches to the site, and it’s looking like we’re going to have a glorious weekend for our 20th year celebrations. I think Snoop Dogg must be a lucky charm – he played in 2005 when we enjoyed fantastic weather so I think we may need to book him every year!
“Fans should ensure they’re prepared for all weather this weekend by bringing sunscreen and a hat to shield themselves from the rays. Remember to stay hydrated over the weekend plus bring layers of clothing as temperatures can drop overnight.”
The 20th year bash kicks off on Thursday, when over 35,000 Thursday campers (a new record!) will descend on the fields of Kinross for a top line-up of Thursday entertainment. This weekend, some of the biggest artists in the world will play T in the Park’s 20th year celebrations, including headliners Mumford & Sons, Rihannaand The Killers, plus Calvin Harris, Kraftwerk, The Script, Stereophonics, Snoop Dogg, David Guetta, Beady Eye, Frank Ocean, Emeli Sandé, alt-J, Foals, The Lumineers, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and loads more.
T in the Park organisers have also issued top tips to make sure that festival goers stay safe in the sun this weekend. Says a T in the Park spokesperson:“We’re all looking forward to a sunny T, but the last thing you want to happen is have your weekend ruined becauseyou weren’t properly prepared. These tips should make sure you enjoy the festival and leave with a suntan.”
1) Sunburn is sore and it looks nasty. Bring sun cream, use it and reapply it throughout the day. 2) Drink lots of water! Bring an empty plastic bottle and fill it up for free at the water taps onsite. 3) Don’t drink too much alcohol –alternate with water and soft drinks and don’t forget to eat regularly – eating’s not cheating. 4) Don’t forget to bring any medication such as anti-histamines and inhalers as the sun can exacerbate these conditions. 5) Come prepared for a change in weather! Even if it’s hot during the day, the site could become cold at night so bring a warm change of clothes and bring a waterproof just in case! 6) If you do feel ill at any time, or run out of sun cream, visit a welfare tent or a first aid point situated around the site

For those without tickets there is a last chance saloon to get involved when the unclaimed deposit tickets go on resale at 7pm this Friday, 12th July… After searching high and low, Julian Marley has been announced as a very fitting replacement for Toots and the Maytals, and two top notch reggae super stars are confirmed as secret headliners for the newly discovered Lion’s Den temple! Other highlights to expect from BoomTown Fair include the full Arcadia Spectacular show, seven diverse districts to align with, more than 30 mini venues to be discovered and over 300 party-tastic musical acts on hand to provide the perfect soundtrack to a long weekend of fully immersive indulgence!
With tickets selling at a record speed for 2013, BoomTown Fair has now officially sold out. However, all is not lost for those who still wish to get their hands on one of the coveted resident passes to the ‘UKs Maddest City’, the unclaimed deposit tickets will go on re-sale this Friday (12th July) from 7pm via the BoomTown website, but be sure to get in there early as the amount is limited and expected to disappear at some pace!
In answer to Toots and the Maytals unexpectedly cancelling their European tour and no longer able to attend BoomTown, the town council have been beavering away to find a suitable replacement and are giddy with excitement to welcome Julian Marley to the Town Centre! Julian is the only son of Bob Marley to be born and raised in the UK and is a Grammy Award nominated, roots-reggae musician, singer-songwriter, producer and humanitarian in his own right. A selection of other acts to be joining Julian on the UK’s only reggae and ska focussed main stage are; Parov Stelar Band, Mad Caddies, Ozomatli, Arrested Development and The Neville Staple Band. There are also two extra special secret headliners for the Lion’s Den to be announced onsite who will be sharing the bill with already announced reggae legends; Gentlemen and the Revolution, Richie Spice, Lee Scratch Perry and Collie Buddz, plus many more!
Moving on from the mind-blowing line-up to the mind-blowing installations that BoomTown has to offer, fresh from the fields of Pilton is the mega beast of Arcadia, all set to fire up with the full Spectacular show (only seen at Glastonbury and BoomTown), which includes astounding aerial acrobatics, projection mapping, lasers and flame throwing pyrotechnical displays, dishing out a hefty dollop of shock and awe, it is the perfect opener for hours of uninterrupted high octane DJ sets from the likes of South Central, Calyx & Teebee, LTJ Buken, Slipmatt & Billy Daniel Bunter, DJ Zinc plus many more, including BoomTown’s very own Mayor! To get a sense of what to expect from Arcadia check out this video from Glastonbury 2013: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XDhNBF35fFw
With the city splitting into seven distinctly different and fully immersive districts, each with its own unique take on complete and utter madness, it is up to the BoomTown residents to choose which area they wish to align themselves with for the duration of the festival. Residents are encouraged to pick their fancy dress outfits around the district they ‘belong to’ and there will even be onsite elections for the post of Town Mayor… Here’s a recap of the districts and what can be expected:

Bringing the cool will be a juggernaut of artists. Leading the charge of the hip acts will be the debut performance at Stereosonic of Boys Noize. With the “Go Hard” EP highlighting the diversity of the Boys Noize sound, expect to be taken on a roller coaster ride with this performance. Boys Noize will also be hitting the stage in another reincarnation; as Dog Blood. The Skrillex and Boys Noize hybrid act has quickly gained a reputation of knocking the wind out of everyone with their wild sets. Their first track “ Next Order” has been dropped in sets across the world and induces the listener to move move move! If their Coachella set is anything to go by, expect the very best for their debut Australian performance…Awesomeness!

Gareth Emery, the genre blending heavyweight, will make his debut performance on the Stereosonic stage. With the release of his latest track, “ Meet Her In Miami” following the success of previous hit tracks, “Tokyo” and the #1 voted ASOT trance track of 2012 “Concrete Angel” , expect Gareth to leave nothing unexplored during his Stereosonic tour.
An act to continually redefine his onstage presence, Giuseppe Ottaviani will present his live show to Stereosonic fans. His latest album release, “Magenta” has been described as “…encapsulating the true essence of trance” , an ethos that this Italian clearly projects on stage. Another iconic artist that fans will be thrilled to see perform will be “pure trance” advocate Solarstone, who has enjoyed massive beatport success with his releases that remain true to the pure sounds of trance.
Further substantiating the trance contingency will be wunderkinds, Heatbeat, with their signature sound, and up and coming Irish artist, Bryan Kearney. These artists will make sure fans get their dose of the faster, darker, more driving side of this genre.
But that’s not the last of it! Ferry Corsten will be presenting his very own FULL ON arena. Lead by Ferry himself, fans will experience 15 minute back to back sets with Ferry and all of his guests on stage. Expect a huge performance from Dutch duo, Showtek, who continue to push the boundaries of their sound to incredible new heights. Armada young gun and the highly anticipated “modern day Mozart” , Andrew Rayel will round out the FULL ON arena with Tritonal and Jochen Miller.
Exemplifying the epic vibe Stereosonic is known for are two exceptional house acts, Tommy Trash and Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano. Tommy’s phenomenal high energy performance at last year's event went down in the history books as one of the best moments of the festival. Expect to hear his latest track with fellow Stereosonic artist, Sebastian Ingrosso, “Reload” , blasted throughout the festival arena. This vibe will also be championed by Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano. Self proclaimed as “…the world’s most energetic house DJ duo”, they will make their debut performance at Stereosonic.
Just as you’ll be regaining your breath you’ll need to catch two of the UK’s standout acts of the last 12 months, Labrinth and Nero. Both artists have had huge releases, resulting in awards and accolades aplenty. Labrinth , the crossover bass master’s debut release “ Electronic Earth” featured the Brit Award nominated single “ “Beneath Your Beautiful” with Emeli Sandé. Whilst Nero’s defining EP “ Won’t You (Be There)” featured in Zane Lowe’s Top 100 Hottest Records of 2012.
Taking reverberation to the next level will be the debut of the UKF Arena. The eclectic mix of bass acts to perform in this huge arena include Matrix & Futurebound, Doctor P, Andy C, Noisia & Foreign Beggars presented, I AM LEGION, ƱZ and Drumsound & Bassline Smith.
