Slam Dunk Festival 2014 Review

All American Rejects set the fans in to a world wind of cheers, screams as they hit the main stage in the civic hall yesterday. They came out playing all the classics like, Dirty Little Secret, Move Along and Gives you hell. Tyson Ritter had such a stage presence, throughout the whole set keeping banter with the fans and even taking a trip into the crowd when he got down off the stage and walked around the barrier into the screaming fans while still singing away.

Gracing the Main stage as well was pop rockers We Are The In Crowd, I was really psyched to see this band after hearing good reviews before hand and the build up various publications were producing, but I couldn’t help notice that Tay Jardine voice sounded a bit “Horse” and after speaking to a few fans they thought the same. That aside they had a good set that got fans singing along.

Here’s what some fans had to say.

Steve Brand Said: I enjoyed seeing We Are In The Crowd, Downside for me was that the stage lighting was crap, It was mainly shining it into the crowd which really ruined the view because you could barley see.

Viktoria Kohajdova: The festival has been fun and I loved seeing We The Kings and The All American Rejects overall I really enjoyed them the most. I got to go to a few signings too, but it was a shame that we the kings didn't do one but I did get to meet Tyson Ritter from TAAR and that really made my day.

The Monster stage had a lot happening and it was definitely the place to be with some killer bands they had performing on it.

Headlining band Bury Tomorrow came out to the stage with a huge amount of fans waiting for them.  They played there newest track Man On Fire off the new album RUNES which dropped that day, they played plenty of older tracks including scepters which set the fans surfing and even had a couple of fans climbing up a tree and hanging off it screaming lyrics back at the band.

Also on the Monster stage were I Killed The Prom Queen they came out with big choruses and even bigger breakdowns, playing a mixture of old school tracks as well as new material from beloved. The Devil Wears Prada blew me away with the sheer number of people that had turned up to see them play. The band’s set was tight with elegant clean vocals and guitar parts blending together with the aggressive vocals.

Over at the UPRAWR DJ stage MC Lars was ready and waiting for Chunk! No Captain Chunk to finish their set on the Monster stage. While waiting a good size crowd started to grow turning up in merchandise, you could tell these were big fans of his work. As soon as Chunk! No Captain Chunk finished seamlessly MC Lars started his set playing tracks, Download This Song, Space Game.  The crowd grew and everyone starting to dance and really vibe off the set, he was definitely one of my favorites of the night.

Before finishing up I spoke to one last visitor to the festival who had this say.

Amanda Fry: This was my first time at Slam Dunk and it was great, I'm already contemplating for next years line up". I enjoyed seeing We The kings, We Are The In Crowd and All American rejects. I didn’t like that Roaring S#!T.

WeAreFstvl 2014 Review

Festival fever was back in business with the popular dance event We Are Fstvl playing hosts this late May bank holiday weekend. Reported weather weeks before the event claimed of a heat wave across the weekend but that couldn’t have been further from the truth with the early Saturday afternoon seeing Upminster Essex covered in heavy consistent rain that increased the Poncho sales dramatically.

However this didn’t dampen the spirits of the many thousands of ravers in attendance.  All eyes were directed to the VIP Village where Shadow Child was on the decks at the MK & Friends tent. The well-known dance shuffle was the crowd favourite dance move and was certainly helping combat the wet weather, oh to be in Ibiza! The VIP Village was a nice touch for the extra money paid for VIP treatment with hot tubs and other added bonuses to add to your weekend.

The sun finally decided to rear its head and the Saturday was setting up nicely. Stages such as the ‘We Are Fstvl Main Stage’, ‘Defected In The House’ and ‘Paradise’ boasted big names such as Jamie Jones, Disclosure, Infinity Ink, Guti, Hot Since 82 and Ritchie Hawtin who was headlining the main stage. For the fans of the more up tempo electric music, the We Are Elctrnc stage served all that you needed to get a bit more bouncy and intense.

Earlier sets from Syn Cole, Hard Rock Sofa and Kryder were just the start on what was a great line up on the We Are Elctrnc stage. Thomas Gold was also a highlight with a lively stand out set on the decks. Up next was Dirty Dutch DJ Chuckie who electrified everyone with his take on the dirty house scene, a genre that is wild and showcased We Are Fstvl as a great festival for different genres of dance music.

With each stage having its main headline act, you were spoilt for choice. A big focus again was on the electric stage where former Pendulum members Rob Swire and Gareth McGrillen threw in their current project Knife Party with such velocity it blew off the faces of the ever loving crowd. This was achieved through dramatic music played and also the quite frequent jets of fire that added even more of an edge to the amazing visuals on the electric stage. Always an exciting experience seeing  Knife Party, who have announced there will be a new Knife Party album coming soon as well as a new Pendulum album, the first one in almost five years. Roll on day two.

With the first day being a success, you could sense the anticipation of another day of great music and good times. The weather being beautiful from the start insured big smiles, more sun cream and the disregard of the wet weather gear! Getting in nice an early this time avoided the heavy queues that would increase later in the day and allowed the early risers to head over to the ‘Cocoon’ stage where Julien Bracht was playing some nice live vibes, something that may have been needed for those with a sore head from the previous day!

A wander round the festival site saw two tents that couldn’t have been more separate in taste of dance music, but were equally as great as each other. One of them being the ‘Andy C Presents Ram’ tent saw the BPM tempo rise above the 160 mark which also could be said the same for your heart rate. A very energetic tent that emphasised the MC role to give the building crowd a bit of interaction. Switch over to the ‘Toolroom Knights Ibiza’ tent which explains itself in the name. Shut your eyes and you were in Ibiza in what was a much needed Balearic sounding change up. Names on the line up were Weiss, Tensnake and Mark Knight.

With the Sunday in full swing, the focus switched to the best stage of the day. The suitably named ‘Eat Sleep Rave Repeat’ main stage boasted a massive line up with the likes of Riva Starr, Tiga, Solumun and a second appearance of the weekend from Amine Edge & Dance. By 7pm the main stage was packed with dancing humans and the spinning duties were handed over to Duke Dumont who provided a fantastic set. Finally as the sun started to set over Upminster Essex, the biggest names of the weekend were set the task of continuing the party atmosphere. Annie Mac fresh from Radio 1’s Big Weekender was first up before the legend Fat Boy Slim! Playing hits such as 'Praise You' and the main stage namesake 'Eat Sleep Rave Repeat' it provided an electrifying finale to a great weekend and a great festival.

Tennents Lager reveal lineup for T Break 2014 at T in the Park

Tennent’s Lager put out their annual call in March for Scotland’s unsigned acts to submit their demos to T Break in the hope of landing one of 16 highly coveted slots on the T Break Stage at T in the Park, and today they announced who will be taking to the legendary T Break Stage this summer.

Tennent’s Lager have been proudly supporting Scotland’s grassroots music scene through T Break for the past 19 years, providing the country’s freshest unsigned talent with the chance to showcase their material to fans, musicians and music industry insiders alike on the biggest platform for unsigned artists at T in the Park – the
T Break Stage.

T Break’s judging panel is made up of 14 of Scotland’s most respected and influential music industry experts who listen to each and every track submitted before coming together to deliberate their shortlists. The judges then decide on the final 16 acts – who will potentially follow in the footsteps of this year’s T in the Park headliner and formerT Break band Biffy Clyro – to make up the T Break 2014 line-up.

Simon Neil, Biffy Clyro front man said of their T Break performance in 1999“It was probably one of the biggest moments of our lives, even now looking back, that first time you feel like a real band is phenomenal…that was literally the break, T gave us the break”

So, with that said, the 16 acts that will play the T Break Stage this year are:

Atom Tree
Birdhead
Blood Relatives
Deathcats
Fat Goth
Medicine Men
Model Aeroplanes
NAKED
Scary People
Secret Motorbikes
TeenCanteen
The Moon Kids
Tisoki
Tuff Love
Vladimir
We Came From Wolves

George Kyle, Head of Sponsorship at Tennent’s Lager said: “We are delighted with the line-up again this year, every year we’re amazed with the volume of fantastic entries T Break receives.  We are immensely proud to continue to support Scotland’s grassroots music through T Break and I believe that former T Break band Biffy Clyro’s headline slot on the Main Stage this summer is testament to the importance of this support and to where it can lead”

Dave McGeachan, Senior Promoter from T Break partners DF Concerts sits on the judging panel. He said: This is an incredibly strong year for Scottish music and the talent coming out of Scotland’s grassroots music scene in particular is of a very high standard.  I feel we’ve managed to get a really great representation across many different genres with this year’s selection and I look forward to seeing some excellent live performances over the weekend."

Paloma Faith and more added to Osfest lineup

Paloma Faith, The Hoosiers, From the Jam, Bay City Rollers and Toyah have been added to our existing lineup which features the very popular boy band Union J, Grammy award winner Foxes, number one hit artist Conor Maynard, current high-flyers Neon Jungle as well as Nina Nesbitt and Luke Friend.

mplimented by some EXCITING new additions.

Born in Hackney, London, Paloma who’s latest single ‘Only Love Can Hurt Like This’ is currently in the official top 10, is half Spanish and half British. The fascinating singer-songwriter Paloma will be performing a unique DJ Set at Osfest, a brilliant DJ, Paloma plays a mixture of guilty pleasures from the 90's RnB and recognisable old soul.

Carly Woodward, Event Director says “The charismatic Paloma Faith is cutting edge on both the stage and the DJ scene, we are really looking forward to her performance, what an amazing way to finish Saturday Night!”

Osfest are also delighted to have the re-formed the Hoosiers on the line up, Sam Swallow of the Hoosiers admits “We came back to it for a very simple reason: we started enjoying writing songs again.” The Hoosiers multi-platinum success of their 2007 debut album, The Trick to Life, includes singles such as ‘Worried About Ray’ and ‘Goodbye Mr. A’.

Osfest festival goers will be transported back to the late seventies as From The Jam, featuring former The Jam bassist Bruce Foxton and Russell Hastings, will be performing all their classics including “Going Underground”, “Town called Malice” and “That’s Entertainment”!  LES McKeown and the Bay City Rollers will be performing "Bye Bye Baby" which was their first UK Number One in May 1975 and the infamous Toyah Ann Willcox will entertain us with "It's a Mystery"!

Redfest 2014 lineup details

Check out the 8th installment of this years Redfest.  This year the KINGS of ragga metal SKINDRED headlining our main stage on Friday 25th July, who will be joined by MOBO winners Krept & Konan, London boys TOY, and Young Kato, who are currently on tour with You Me at Six.

Skindred are veritable festival veterans and famed for their intense live performances, we have absolutely no doubt that Friday night is going to GO OFF.

Skindred's Benji Webbe: 'As ambassadors of British music Skindred are more than buzzed to be invited along to headline Red "DRED" fest. All the boys in the band have enjoyed playing in Surrey and this is another chance for us to stamp down power in front of British music fans. We ain't fucking about Redfest, You're GETTING IT!'

South London hip hop duo Krept & Konan are Casyo "Krept" Johnson and Karl "Konan" Wilson, and winners of the 2013 'Best Newcomers' MOBO award.

We also welcome indie rock band Peace to our main stage as our Saturday headliners. Having received critical acclaim from publications such as The Guardian and NME in 2012, comparing them to bands like The Maccabees and Foals, Worcester quartet Peace went on to be nominated for Radio 1's 'Sound of 2013', and had Top 20 success with their 2013 album 'In Love'.

Also joining us with be Landudno boys Catfish and the Bottlemen. Playing loud, explosive, sexy rock and roll songs full of guitars and energy, CATBM took part in Radio 1's Future Festival at the beginning of the year, and have been wowing audiences up and down the UK.

We also welcome Irish folk-pop duet, and brothers, Harry and Alfie Hudson Taylor, who will be joining us along with Youtube sensation George Barnett, The Skints – back by very popular demand, along with The LaFontaines, the hauntingly beautiful voice of Lauren Aquilina, Jim Lockey and the Solemn Sun, mesmerising soul from Lulu James, rousing rock lads The Struts and Birmingham lads JAWS.

The Total Uprawr Stage

It may surprise some to find a band like Welsh pop rock gods The Blackout headlining such a billing, but with so  many crossover vibes and mashed genres going on over the whole weekend we are confident of a great reception. And a very full tent.

Our Friday night headliner is Heart of a Coward, a band that has been KILLING the metal tents at festivals such as Download, and who always bring the RAWR.

We also welcome London hardcore troupe TRC, with Heights, The Dirty Youth, Lostalone, Polar, Baby Godzilla, Astroid Boys, The Catharsis, Slaves, The First, The One Hundred, and Rat Attack also on the billing.

Completing our Uprawr Stage lineup are Skies in Motion, Fathoms, Collisions, When We Were Wolves, Aurora, Our Hollow Our Home, A Moment Lost and Set Your Sails.

Peace Interview: Dot to Dot Festival

A year since Birmingham band, Peace, released their debut album, In Love, they have played shows across the globe and are set to headline this year’s Dot To Dot Festival. Drummer Dominic Boyce spoke to Ben Jolley about making the second album and nights out in Nottingham.

“WE played Dot To Dot in 2011 and it was so much fun. Nottingham has always been amazing to us. We've had some great shows and we've got lots of friends there so we're really excited,” says Peace drummer Dominic Boyce.

“It'll also be one of the first shows since before Christmas so we can't wait. We're ready to explode. We're ready for a great weekend and I think Dot To Dot will provide.”

It's a significant gig for the Worcester indie quartet, as headliners. They'll be on the main stage at Rock City on Sunday, one of 15 stages hosting dozens of bands and musicians during the all day event.

The last time they played the Talbot Street venue was also a significant occasion.

“That was the first night on that tour and I was pretty nervous but very excited because it was the biggest tour we had ever done. I loved that Rock City show.

“That whole area around there with the venues and clubs is great. We've had many a good night in Rescue Rooms.”

Dominic says that the follow up to last year's debut album, In Love, is near enough finished.

“Sonically there are some similarities to the debut but it certainly drifts around different sounds. I think we're moving on, in a more focused and controlled direction.

“No one could predict exactly how In Love was going to sound, because it was our first album. Whereas, with the second one we're much more educated in the process of recording an album.”

With so much hype surrounding what Peace will do next, it's surprising that they aren't feeling the pressure.

“It was very much us saying we want to do it now,” he says of the quick return to the studio to record the follow-up.

“We're not putting it off, maybe we should be, but it just felt like the right time. It feels like this is what we should be doing.”

A lot of the new songs were recorded in hotel rooms or on the back of tour buses.

“There wasn't really a lot of pre-production to the new album.

“A lot of it was written on the road. Harry would make really rough vocal and acoustic guitar demos then we'd all listen to them and come up with our own ideas of what the songs could potentially sound like.

“The album's probably been written over the last 18 months of touring, although I think we've still got a lot to give from the first album.”

The band's new single, Money, is his favourite from the new record.

He says: “It was the first song we did in the studio and we had a lot of fun recording it. We'd been waiting to get back in the studio for so long.”

Another new track, World Pleasure, hears lead singer Harrison Koisser show off his rap skills.

“I think rap's too strong a word, but it is slightly more rhythmic,” says Dominic, adding “I think it sounds cool.”

In August, Peace will be playing the main stage at the Reading and Leeds Festival.

“I think it's my favourite festival,” he says.”When we played there last year, they were probably our favourites of the whole summer. You couldn't ask for a better crowd really. We're very flattered and honoured to be asked to play the main stage this time. If people think we can do it then we'll certainly give it a good go.”

So what about the rest of 2014?

“After festival season, we hope to release the new album, probably at the end of summer. I don't know what will happen in autumn; probably much of the same really. We'll play a few shows, go abroad… we've got a lot of years left in us.”

Peace headline the Dot to Dot Festival on Sunday at Rock City from 10pm.

Unlike my actual virginity though, I'll get to lose it twice in a weekend."

Paul Chowdhry said of his upcoming appearance: I’m gonna go in heavy at the V Festival this year. If my performance time on the comedy stage clashes with Justin Timberlake or The Killers, I’d like to apologise in advance for stealing their audience.”

Across the weekend V Festival goers will be treated to the very best in stand-up comedy with other names includingFosters Comedy Award winner Phil Nichol, Jarlath Regan and John Fothergill.  The Glee Club Comedy tent will also feature the very best in upcoming talent including Matt Richardson, Charlie Baker and Dapper Laughs.

The London-born and Devon-raised Ben Howard comes to the festival riding a wave of momentum that has taken the folk star from the cosy venues of south west England to festival stages the world over. Having signed to Island Records in 2011, Howard has since gone on to be nominated for the coveted Mercury Prize for his album Every Kingdom, and later going on to win the Best Newcomer and Best British Solo Male Artist at the 2013 BRIT Awards. He was also nominated for the Ivor Novello for Best Album in the same year.
