Jurassic 5 are undoubtedly one of the most important groups in recent hip hop history. The Los Angeles band reunite this year, six years after their last album and is guaranteed to be a triumphant return to the stage of all its original members who will experience Sonar by Night. DJ Nu-Mark, Cut Chemist, Chali 2Na and company are undisputed masters in the art of beats and rhymes whose countless hits are already part of the collective memory in lovers of the genre and indeed music fans in general. What a treat…

Bat For Lashes, the project by the charismatic Natasha Khan, a British singer-songwriter (with Pakistani origin) of enormous talent, and one of the most interesting voices on the international scene. Khan will present her most recent praised work “The Haunting Man”, a formidable collection of contemporary synth pop at what will be her very first Sonar performance.

Beyond being one of the pillars of dubstep, Skream has now become a more mature musician and dj, capable of mixing (like few others), all genres of today’s dance music with a master’s touch. His session at SonarPub on Saturday falls between two heavyweights Justice and Laurent Garnier, where he is sure to surprise more than a few.

Luciano has had an extensive career in some of the worlds best dj booths, demonstrating his versatility, with a style that in recent years has moved between minimal techno and percussive house. He is therefore the perfect man to close Saturday night at SonarClub.

Meanwhile, young Alvin Risk will show us his skills on the decks, which have earned him the right to include himself as part of the new breed of young producers and djs in American electronica. Not surprisingly, he will play just ahead of the Skrillex performance, the most visible face of the new revolution on U.S. dancefloors.

Also joining the Sonar Night, national maximalist and synthesizer magician Alizzz, the versatile and audacious Thug Ladies djs, as well as Barcelona dj duo Kimberly & Clarke, with a moombathon session.

The Sónar Pass, the 2-Night Ticket, the individual tickets for Sónar by Day and Sónar by Night, and the professional accreditation are now ALL on sale via www.sonar.es.

Today’s Top Rated European dance music labels at SonarCar

SonarCar, the bumper cars stage, returns to Sónar by Night as a meeting point with a reputation to surprise. It will showcase some of the most important labels and major European collectives in the current landscape of electronic dance.

50Weapons, Modeselektor’s label, has demonstrated a finely tuned taste in the selection of its catalogue. It’s showcase presents four of their latest signings: young Welshman Benjamin Damage, veterans Anstam y Phon.o, and one of the most promising artists in French electronica, Bambonou.

Rush Hour is synonymous with work of the highest quality. Number one record store and distributor, for several years it has been one of the most reliable operations on the continent. The Dutch brand will present San Proper ‘live’ and a session by one of its founders,dj Antal.

The musical programming of Italian public broadcaster Radio 2advocates the modern and daring, as the sound of the Life and Death label output who will present two of their most prominent artists at Sonar by Night: Clockwork feat. Atavism and Vaal.

Based in Barcelona, Suara have earned their reputation across the continent among lovers of quality techno dance music, resulting in some their most important flag bearers like Coyu (founder) or Edu Imbernon continuously playing on both sides of the Atlantic.

Finally, Nehuen and Cardopusher have been chosen to close Saturday night at SonarCar. Two lovers of old drum machines; they are responsible for a new national movement of house and techno with the Classicworks analog flavor. Sonar visit Japan from 5th – 8th April: The 6th and 7th being the 6th edition of SonarSound Tokyo, with the 5th and 8th of the same month being held as the 1st edition of A Taste of Sónar Osaka.

The festival in the Japanese capital also includes new names; among those who standout are Alec Empire (powerful musician and noise lover and founder of the legendary Atari Teenage Riot) and British DJ and producer Pinch (influential cornerstone of dubstep and its derivatives from his Tectonic label).

Also, the festival adds new and relevant representatives from the Japanese scene, such as agraphDJ NobuMadeggSoichiro Tonaka and nisennenmondai.

Sonar 2013 Details

The 20th anniversary of Sonar will be a global celebrationwhich begins in Reykjavik in February and culminates inBarcelona in June, passing through Africa, Asia and Latin America. In total, within the next six months, Sonar will be programming around 300 shows spread across 21 stages
at its 5 festivals.

In 2013, the Icelandic capital, one of the world's most musically fertile cities, joins the four destinations of 2012. Sonar celebrates 20 years as one of the most internationally renowned and solid cultural brands.

Today, the festival introduces the first artists for the celebrations atSonar Barcelona, which include Kraftwerk and Pet Shop Boys, two classic names in full force and with an transgenerational influence on the popular music of recent decades, from purist electronica, to dance music and pop.

Pet Shop Boys (UK)
Two Door Cinema Club (UK)
Hot Natured (UK)

Vatican Shadow (US)
Bradien + Eduard Escoffet (ES)
Fantastic Mr Fox (DE)

The 20th anniversary of Sonar Barcelona will take place on the13th, 14th and 15th June 2013.

The stand-out feature of the line-up preview is the extraordinary
new show in 3D by Kraftwerk. The prestigious German group was founded in 1970 and has been one of the most influential outfits in the music of the last 40 years, in electronica and in popular music in general. Their eight studio albums are more than classics – they are true anthems in recent music history. For their performance at Sonar 2013, Kraftwerk will be reviewing their hits with a unique and updated sound at SonarClub, the festival's main stage. Their new show adapts 3D technology to their own language and gives body and volume to the powerful imagery that has accompanied them throughout their career. The show can be enjoyed with standard 3D glasses.

Another unquestionable benchmark – in this case in the field of electronic pop – is the British duo Pet Shop Boys. After the recent release of their latest album "Elysium”, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe, who began working together in the early ‘80s, will be presenting a new show featuring visuals and technological content atSonar Barcelona. The creators of countless legendary songs of our era, including “West End Girls”, “Domino Dancing”, “It's A Sin”, “Always On My Mind”, “Go West”, “Being Boring”, “Domino Dancing”, “Flamboyant” and “New York City Boy”, Pet Shop Boys have always been a step ahead of their peers, shrewdly navigating the currents of electronic pop and dance music, while maintaining an admirable and carefully balanced critical and commercial success.

The Northern Ireland trio Two Door Cinema Club is another of the great attractions in the line-up of Sonar 2013. During their live show, the band will be reviewing their two albums released to date, which have made them one of today's most powerful and vigorous producers of electropop hits, with tracks like “What you know”, “Undercover Martyn” and “Something Good Can Work”.
Within Sonar's 100% dance territory, this year's highlights include the live show from Hot Natured, the energetic collective of DJs and producers led by the already essential Jamie Jones, the new king Midas of underground house, and the special collaboration betweenLindstrom & Todd Terje, Norwegian producers who combine luminous electronica and nu-disco. Another name on the up,Fantastic Mr Fox, will be deploying his unique vision of R&B on an abstract and at the same time danceable tip.
Among the sonic explorers, the festival presents Vatican Shadow, the project who rediscovers industrial techno by the American producer Dominick Fernow.

In the Spanish artists section, we have a couple of very special guests, Bradien + Eduard Escoffet, the combination of the Barcelona-based instrumental group and the poet Eduard Escoffet presenting their new album 'Pols' live.

Sonar adds Flying Lotus, Simian Mobile Disco and more!

A double helping of Flying Lotus

The man behind the Californian Brainfeeder label and an artist admired all over the world, Flying Lotus is an essential benchmark in today's hip-hop and electronica, capable of blending all types of genres within his songs to create a highly recognizable style all his own, at the point where jazz, psychedelia and abstract beats converge. He is just about to release his new album on Warp, and at Sónar we can enjoy a double helping of his talent, with two shows at Sónar by Day: one heading the Brainfeeder showcase and another as part of the line-up on the SonarDôme stage curated by Red Bull Music Academy (he was an Academy participant in 2006).

Flying Lotus

Emerging talent of 2012

The Canadians Trust have emerged as one of the surprises of 2012 with the dark and overpowering pop of their (deservedly) acclaimed debut album. The same is true of Russia's Nina Kraviz, the new star of European electronica, who joins the line-up presented by Red Bull Music Academy to present house gems from her first and highly praised self-titled album. The AmericanStar Slinger, meanwhile, is beginning to set tongues wagging in increasingly wider circles with his original sessions and mixtapes covering house, hip-hop and electronic syncopation.

Sonar presents the world premiere of Mostly Robot

Soul explorer and innovator of electronic live performances Jamie Lidell; the prestigious experimentalist Tim Exile; finger-drumming virtuoso Jeremy Ellis; New York’s 2x DMC World Champ, DJ Shiftee; and the keyboardist and regular member of Lidell's band Mister Jimmy. They are the 5 members ofMostly Robot, the new band conceived by Native Instruments, who will be introduced as a world premiere at Sónar by Day. Truly ‘live’, each musician plays independently of each other – instruments are synced only by the human element, in the tradition of inspiring jazz concerts. The Sónar showcase is also a rare moment to catch a glimpse of yet unreleased song material from individual band members. The music will be accompanied by a visual concept from Berlin’s extraordinary collective Pfadfinderei.

Complete line-ups of the BBC Radio 1 showcase and SonarDôme stage by Red Bull Music Academy

For a second year running BBC Radio 1 have joined forces with Sonar and programmed a very special line up curated by Annie Mac. Annie will host theBBC Radio 1 Presents stage on June 15th and BBC Radio 1's Essential Mix will broadcast live from 0200-0600 (EST) (0100-0500 BST)  with the live show from Simian Mobile Disco (presenting their new record, "Unpatterns") and DJ sets from Annie Mac herself on the decks , the duo of French DJs Brodinskivs Gesaffelstein and British beatmakers duo Jack Beats. For more information www.bbc.co.uk/radio

In addition to Flying Lotus and Nina Kraviz, the line-up on the SonarDôme stage curated by Red Bull Music Academy is now complete with the addition of two more acts: Italy-based psychedelic disco trio Esperanza (a new signing to the acclaimed Gomma label) and the new project of Swiss DJ and producers Faktor and Clinic, Radiorifle. The Red Bull Music Academy, a world-travelling music school which will stop in New York for its 15th yearly edition this September, has been curating the SonarDôme since 2009, with previous editions featuring artists such as Katy B, Brandt Brauer Frick and Pilooski's Discodeine.

Steve Reich unable to travel for Sónar Festival

The composer and pianist Carles Santos, one of the most reputed artists in contemporary Spanish music will substitute Steve Reich on the pieces which should have been performed by the American author. Carles Santos joins the bcn216 orchestra and chorus Synergy Vocals, maintained therefore the foreseen repertoire intact for the Sonar 2011 inaugural concert at L’Auditori Barcelona. Both programmed pieces, “Sextet” and “Music for 18 Musicians”, will be interpreted entirely and without changes.

L’Auditori Barcelona and the Sonar festival organization have invited Carles Santos to join the project, who has confirmed immediately his interest in participating as a personal homage to Steve Reich, one of his most admired composers and of whom he has already interpreted part of his work on other occasions.

27 new additions to Sónar 2011

The other inclusions in the line-up are music star Dizzee Rascal, the rising crooner Ghostpoet, North American MC YelaWolf, backed by Eminem, Tiga (in charge of closing SonarLab on Friday night), oOoOO (the third cornerstone of the Brooklyn label Tri Angle showcase) and the showcase by the Italian label Stroboscopic Artefacts, among others.

Sónar continues to seek out the most interesting artists working in Spain right now and this year has selected 10 more names for inclusion in the Barcelona festival line-up.

Sónar Galicia adds 5 top level shows to the line-up: James Murphy, Four Tet, the techno-dubstep producer Martyn, the tech-house maestro Radio Slave and the French house duo DJ Mehdi Vs. Brodinski.

In anticipation of further confirmations, Sónar, the 18th International Festival of Advanced Music and Multimedia Art – which will be held in Barcelona days 16, 17 and 18 June – now features a total of 125 shows with these 22 new additions.

New international additions to Sónar Barcelona 2011

james murphyJames Murphy, one of the most important characters in music so far this century, comes to Sónar after his tremendous recent farewell concert for his band LCD Soundsystem, to give us two sets of exquisite disco-funk-house: one at Sónar Barcelona and the other at Sónar Galicia.

Four Tet is one of the essential names in contemporary music working today. A top drawer producer, a maestro of meticulous electronica and a dj with unquestionable taste, this English artist will be presenting tracks from his most recent album, “There Is Love In You”, and his recent collaborations with Burial, Thom Yorke and Caribou both at Sónar Galicia and Sónar Barcelona.

Dizzee Rascal, probably the best MC to come out of the United Kingdom in the last decade and one of the cornerstones of the British urban sound, returns to Sónar by popular demand after his excellent show last year.

ghostpoetAs well as Dizzee Rascal, the festival also presents his fellow British artist Ghostpoet whose debut “Peanut Butter Blues and Melancholy Jam” – a treatise of modern hip-hop, tending towards blues and the dark side of trio hop – is one of the most pleasant surprises of this year.

As is the music by the enigmatic oOoOO, one of the cornerstones of Tri Angle who joins the showcase by the Brooklyn label to provide a set for horizontal listening halfway between a live show and a dj session.

Sónar also presents the showcase by the Italian label Stroboscopic Artefacts (dark and penetrating IDM with the brand new names of Lucy and Dadub); the renowned Canadian dj Tiga, who will be responsible for bringing Friday to a close on the SonarLab stage; and one of today’s most interesting MCs, America’s YelaWolf, an Eminem protegé with a powerful personality able to rap at truly devilish speeds. The international additions are rounded off by the Canadian Marc Messier’s unusual Sewing Machine Orchestra, whose name says it all: it is an orchestra consisting of amplified computer-controlled sewing machines.

New Spanish additions to Sónar Barcelona 2011

In its global tracking of the most stimulating talent working today, Sónar looks particularly carefully within Spain’s borders to select the best of the country’s electronica and advanced music.

There are ten new additions to the Sónar Barcelona line-up, all of which are outstanding in terms of their contemporary sensitivity and their commitment to quality: the Barcelona darkwave duo Stendhal Syndrome (with visuals by Alba G. Corral); the disco-house-pop magic of Pffff; the amalgam of styles of Shelby Grey (the new project by Barcelona’s Vicknoise); Aster, the outstanding new duo of djs on the Hivern label; the fascinating world of the electronic luthiers of the Barcelona Laptops Orchestra; the tender and intimate IDM of Ragul; the Aragonese dj Chelis, one of the most creative djs in Spain; the mixture of jazzy grooves and beatboxing of Beat’A’Boom; and selectors from Spain’s two leading music publications: Half Nelson and Vidal Romero (Go-Mag djs) and Joan S. Luna (MondoSonoro), as well as the showcase by Natura Sonoris, one of the country’s leading techno labels, with its main man Henry Saiz and the dark and profound Sistema.

Latest international additions to Sónar Galicia 2011

With these 5 new additions, Sónar Galicia 2011, the 2nd Festival of Advanced Music which will be held in A Coruña on 17 and 18 June now has a total of 27 confirmed shows.

As well as the star turns by James Murphy and Four Tet, Sónar Galicia includes four of the most consolidated and renowned names in modern European electronica in its line-up.

martynHolland’s Martyn, a key figure in the new school where dubstep and electronica converge, will be presenting tracks from his forthcoming album on Brainfeeder – Flying Lotus’ label – with his new live show.

Matt Edwards, the man behind Radio Slave, has been giving us remixes and his own tunes in the best European tech-house tradition for more than decade, while always keeping the quality threshold high.

Finally, the French duo consisting of DJ Mehdi + Brodinski (sharpshooters of carefully woven house and techno on a party tip on Ed Banger and Turbo respectively) promises to provide some of the highlights on the SonarHall stage at Sónar Galicia.

Sonar 2011 adds 11 new artists

mia sonar 2011M.I.A., a key figure in the collision of styles that characterises the beginning of this century, arrives at Sónar revved up and ready to go with her explosive live show and her recent mixtape, “Vicki Leekx”. Her shows in Barcelona and Galicia will be the only ones in Spain this year.

Die Antwoord have made an enormous impact fromdie antwoord sonar 2011 their native South Africa with a ground-breaking image, blown-up light shows and a musical style that takes on dirty rap, naïf pop and even eurobeat.

Australia’s Cut Copy have taken a major step forward towards a privileged position placing them halfway between cult status and international success, thanks to their contemporary synth pop.

Boys Noize are able to move masses with their acid techno, which they will be presenting at Sónar with a powerful audiovisual show prepared especially for the occasion.

And while we’re on the subject of shaking up the dancefloor, there is no one better than Buraka Som Sistema, who return with their vibrant live show based on kuduro and broken beats that pours out pure adrenalin.

New additions to Sónar Barcelona

The figure of Shackleton, a cult producer if ever there was one, looms larger every day thanks to his highly personal sound, which is dark, hypnotic and astonishingly profound.
Nicolas Jaar is set to become one of the names/men of the year: incredibly young and extremely talented, his slow, sexy and somewhat sad house, (listen to his debut album “Space Is Only Noise”) is already one of the sounds of the year.

Germany’s Paul Kalkbrenner is one of the most popular DJs in the world right now, although he has known for over 20 years what it means to handle a dancefloor with over 20,000 people gagging to dance.

Mark Pritchard and Tom Middleton formed the legendary Global Communication, a cornerstone of nineties ambient thanks to their masterpiece of the genre, the album “76:14”, which they will be performing live, showing that their ideas are still applicable today.

Pritchard will also feature with Africa Hitech (this time round with Steve Spacek), with their excellent appropriation of tribal rhythms that blast them into a future that is just around the corner.

America’s Steve Aoki has taken a major step forward towards the big leagues, dominating the dancefloor with effectiveness and forcefulness, and working with Armand van Helden on the explosive “Brrap!”.
