Shambala joins forces with Tree Aid

Every year the Sahara desert grows by 270,000 square km – that’s an area the size of New Zealand stripped of trees every single year. Despite the creeping sand more than 350million people live on the southern fringes of this desert in a daily battle to survive. This is where TREE AID works, and why Shambala Festival-goers have chosen to join TREE AID’s Tree Revolution, to help plant and protect 1 million trees in 2011.

 
Each year Shambala reduces even more of the environmental impact of their small and lively festival, including offering their visitors the chance to offset the carbon they create by travelling to and from the festival. This year, TREE AID was one of three organisations put to the carbon vote – and 47% of punters chose to join TREE AID’s Tree Revolution by donating £1907 to help rural families in Africa’s drylands to plant and protect trees. 
 
A fun-filled four days of creativity, music, theatre and cabaret all topped off with mouth watering food from around the globe, Shambala also has an eco focus. Having recently been the first ever festival to win the maximum 3 stars in the Industry Green Award, Shambala is officially the UK’s greenest festival, and since 2010 Shambala have reduced their carbon footprint per person by 50%, making them the ideal festival to team up with TREE AID to help some of the poorest people in the world cope with to the increasing effects of climate change. 
 
Especially because for African families living in the drylands, trees do more than just absorb carbon. Trees mean shade from the searing 40ºC heat of the West African sun. Trees mean food for families when other crops fail. Trees mean a poor woman can lift her family out of poverty by selling tree products like shea butter, dried mango and honey.  Trees mean families can stay together, that children can go to school and that teenagers are not driven to find dangerous work in the city slums.
 
Ultimately, trees mean life. For families in Africa, as well as for families here in the UK.
 
This year’s Shambala Festival is once again set to be full of unexpected surprises, with ticket holders being asked to vote for the bands they want to play over the weekend, plus the legendary Saturday night fancy dress carnival – all 99% powered by solar, wind and recycled veggie oil! Sziget Festival lineup almost complete

One of the most successful and coolest electronic music acts of the past twenty years, Prodigy is playing on the Main Stage of Sziget Festival again. No need to tell you anything else, a great show is guaranteed, so just make sure you arrive in time to get your place in the crowd. Another new feature of the Main Stage line-up is Kate Nash, a charismatic and already well-known singer from Great Britain. Kate is proud owner of a BRIT music award, which says a lot of her wonderful skills. And still talking about the Main Stage program: Kaiser Chiefs are coming to play the new songs of their freshly released album. The Chiefs are growing to become an emblematic band of present times, gaining inspiration from the punk and new wave movement of the turn of the seventies and eighties, and without doubt they are one of the most authentic and well-received indie rock bands of the United Kingdom.

Last but not least, another great piece of news: the most colourful music act of Australia, Empire of the Sun is playing at Sziget Party Arena, presenting their spectacular show, inspired by science-fiction and sometimes similar to a fashion-gala. With newly added performances from massive acts such as Optimo, The Juan Maclean and Jodis Harsh’s Circus and previously announced Beth Ditto, Blondie, Scissor Sisters, Robyn and Kelis, Sunday promises to be a wickedly exciting and compelling day out, and a fittingly rambunctious and outrageous finale to a fantastic weekend.
 
PeachesWe’re also pleased to announce a new arena – The Bacardi Get Together, which will provide surroundings perfectly encompassing both a place to soak up the festival atmosphere together over a BACARDÍ cocktail, and the ultimate place to party. Crowds will see 3 DJ greats join forces behind the decks for a one off – never before heard ‘BACARDÍ Together Set’. Sunday-goers can expect to see performances from founders of legendary Glasgow club night and celebrated DJs in their own right, Optimo, DFA Records’ The Juan Maclean and Holy Ghost! andpurveyors of the New York Disco scene In Flagranti.
 
Sunday in the Relentless Energy Drink Arena will be taken over by Jodie Harsh’s Circus, where she will be bringing her famous parties out of the warehouse and into the park. The London icon and life and soul of the party will be joined by an immense line-up of friends, including Filthy Dukes, Fred Falke and Style Of Eye.
 
This year, Trailer Trash are teaming up with The Lovely Jonjo’s ‘Hot Boy Dancing Spot’ – together, along with Hannah Holland, Mikki Most and Ian Robinson, and Rory Phillips, they’ll be bringing their ferocious parties to Lovebox.
 
Legendary monthly party in deepest Dalston, Disco Bloodbath will team up with filthy spiral techno, jungletech drum & bass crew, Dirtbox (who were runner-up in the recent Boyz Awards for ‘Best Alternative Club Night) to host a Sunday stage. DJs Ben Pistor, Damon Martin, Gibson are just some of the heavy hitters representing on the day, ready to melt eager festivalgoers into a sweaty puddle with their inimitable quest for debauched thrills and spills on the dancefloor. 
 
Previously announced artists to the Out and Out Fierce programme include lead singer of The Gossip and NME’s “Coolest Person in Rock,” flamboyant indie-rocker Beth Ditto whowill play the main stage, Italian Disco duo Retro/Grade, Disco House posers Monarchy and model/singer/songwriter/stylist Viktoria Modesta. Some of Jodie Harsh’s Circus’ already added acts are “Sultan of Scando techno” Style of Eye, DJ Fred Falke, synthpoppers Filthy Dukes, DJ/Producer Kris Di Angelis (live), Bowski, Warboy, and Scottee will be hosting his infamous alternative cabretclub Eat Your Heart Out.
 
As if that isn’t enough, Lovebox 2011 will also see the return of NYC Downlow, the infamous US import which fuses cabaret, performance and music in one strikingly unmissable individual space and which can only be witnessed in all its eye-popping glory here. Horse Meat Disco residents James Hillard, Jim Stanton and Filthy Luka, will be throwing a gloriously messy party alongside Tensnake, Severino and The Shit Robot Show (Live)

More comedy acts announced for Green Man Festival

Grab yourself a cider in our magnificent marquee of merriment as some of the best stand-ups in the business take the mike from 7pm to 2am daily!

There’s so more to Green Man than the fantastic music – we’ve got three nights of brilliant comedy lined-up from an amazing array of acts including:

Tom Wrigglesworth – the national have-a-go-hero who rescued a little old lady from the jaws of Virgin train bureaucracy, only to be arrested for begging. The resulting sell-out show bagged him a prestigious Chortle award and his own BBC Radio 4 series.

Tony Law - an Edinburgh Festival favourite whose self-styled “acid-casualty” approach to stand-up is as laid-back as it is hilarious. The Canadian’s scorching jokes and incisive wit made him the perfect choice to support Stewart Lee on his recent UK tour.

Trevor Lock – among the most intelligent, original and exciting acts in comedy today. His ability to improvise whole routines with cleverly crafted wordplay and stream of consciousness ad-libbing has gained him a worldwide cult following.

Alistair Barrie – one of the most in-demand MCs on the international circuit. He hosted and helped organise Bye George, the comedians farewell to George W. Bush at London’s Southbank Centre, alongside Rory Bremner, Mark Thomas and Marcus Brigstocke.

Gary Delaney – a razor sharp comedian widely regarded as being the most quotable stand-ups on the circuit. His high-volume, high quality one-liners have left audiences reeling, from rowdy clubs to bizarre corporate gigs at the Labour Party Conference.
Ben Clark and Tom Parry – the two tallest members of acclaimed sketch group Pappy’s. Their unique brand of silly comedy has won rave reviews at Edinburgh, a Chortle award for Best Sketch Act and slots on BBC Radio 4 and Channel 4. 

PLUS sets from Mike Wozniak, Helen Arney, Maeve Higgins, Mark Olver, Bec Hill, Tom Bell, Terry Saunders and many, many more yet to be announced.

Festival Republic Stage announced for Reading and Leeds Festival

THE HORRORS will take to the Festival Republic Stage as our headliners for what is sure to be two very special shows. After forming in the summer of 2005, the band quickly gained notoriety around London for their look, sound and brief but frantic live shows. Mixing shoegazing, post-punk and goth influences, expect The Horrorsto deliver one of those iconic Festival Republic Stage moments.
 
With a long awaited new album ready to drop on 20th June, DIGITALISM are all set to perform at this year’s Reading & Leeds Festival. The German duo make electronic music that everyone can rock to. Over the past few years, they have been the go-to men for indie remixes, having reworked the Klaxons, Futureheads and Cut Copy. With the new album featuring a track co-written with The Strokes front man Julian Casablancas, the record is sure to drag the indie kids back to their electronic party.           
 
Five years on from his acclaimed debut album, TOM VEK is back.   Vek spontaneously released his first album just as the digital age was dawning, then disappeared. Now he returns with his second album ‘Leisure Seizure’, released on 6th June on Island Records.   An artist with a unique and singular vision, these sets are not to be missed.
 
Genre hopping four piece, WHITE DENIM, head to the Festival Republic Stage off the back of their critically acclaimed new album, ‘D’. Fiercely experimental and talented, The Guardian were moved to say “they cram more radical change into single songs than many bands managed in entire lifespans”.
 
One of the most talked about artists of 2011, ANNA CALVI is set for her first visit to Reading & Leeds.   After a nomination in the BBC Sounds poll in January, Anna has since released her debut album through Domino Records, with The Evening Standard declaring that “her raw talent is undeniable: 2011 is Calvi’s for the taking”.

THE ANTLERS is Peter Silberman, Darby Cicci and Michael Lerner.   With a new expansive sound on recent album ‘Burst Apart’, released via our Alternative Stage friends Transgressive Records, the plaudits are piling up and The Antlers look set to become one of the names of the festival.
 
FOSTER THE PEOPLE are “a band with greatness absolutely within their grasp” according to The Sunday Times. The three piece, who recently played their first UK shows, are now readying their debut album ‘Torches’ which is due out later this month.
 
New York punks CEREBRAL BALLZY have a reputation for being one of the most exciting bands on the circuit. With a sound compared to the likes of Black Flag, Minor Threat and early Beastie Boys this is a group that never disappoints live.
 
DRY THE RIVER  are one of the one’s to watch at this year’s festival. After building momentum in 2010, 2011 has seen the band play rapturously received shows at the SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas (hailed by NME as one of the highlights of the week) and begin recording debut album, due for release later this year, with Peter Katis (The National, Interpol).
 
Knoxville’s ROYAL BANGS released their debut album in 2008 through Audio Eye Records, an independent label founded by Patrick Carney of The Black Keys.   Trading instruments and production duties, band members Chris Rusk, Ryan Schaefer and Sam Stratton are now back with new album ‘Flux Outside’. 
 
Exeter’s THE COMPUTERS released their debut full length album ‘This Is The Computers’ last month. There is no ambiguity or airs of pretension here.   The Computers play sartorially-snappy supersonic rhythm and blues with larynx-shredding vocals.   Rock Sound summed it up by declaring their sound as “50’s fuelled riffery and scream along gang vocals with an intensity that would make Chuck Berry roll in his grave”.
 
ISLET are liquid, rotating between instruments, singing, howling.   Drum-duo breakdowns, splashes of guitar, searing organs.   Playing music for the joy of the moment. Their second mini-album, ‘Wimmy’ was released in October 2010 and was recorded and mixed themselves in Cardiff, and affirms Islet to be one of the most exciting new bands that the UK has seen for a long time.
 
On a break from Queens of the Stone Age, Michael Shuman joined forces with long time friends Tyler Parkford and Zach Dawes to create MINI MANSIONS.   Josh Homme describes the band’s sound as “genuinely psychedelic with huge hooks… after listening to Mini Mansions just once, you won’t be able to get it out of your head”. Be sure to get in the arena early to witness these sets.
 
Hailing from the blistering valley of Los Angeles and touted as rock’s new generation is CHERRI BOMB, a badass all girl rock band who have already shared the stage with such bands as Filter, the super group Camp Freddy and toured with the Smashing Pumpkins.

After drawing one of the weekend’s biggest crowds last year, THE MIDNIGHT BEAST return as our Festival Republic Stage headliners. The internet sensations sent YouTube into meltdown last year with their cover of Ke$ha’s ‘Tik Tok’. If you haven’t seen them live yet, think of them as a musical version of the characters of The Inbetweeners, and be sure to catch them this summer at Reading & Leeds Festival.
 
NYC’s RIVAL SCHOOLS will remind us just what we’ve been missing when they return to the UK this summer. Since reforming in 2008 after nearly eight years away the band has been touring the US and Europe relentlessly, including a UK co-headline tour with…The Trail Of Dead. The pioneers of Post-Hardcore will certainly appeal to a whole new generation of fans now they’ve released their much anticipated third album ‘Pedals’.
 
Known for their unrelenting tours that has seen them play over 300 gigs since the start of 2009 Belfast’s finest AND SO I WATCH YOU FROM AFAR (ASIWYFA to their fans) are still going strong. From appearances at festivals around the world to a support slot for rock supergroup ‘Them Crooked Vultures’, we can look forward to the instrumental quartet’s subtle rhythms on the Festival Republic Stage

Hailing from Manchester DUTCH UNCLES met at primary school and released their debut album ‘Cadenza’ for Memphis Industries earlier this year. Described by the band as “definitely pop music but hopefully with a little bit more for the listener to scratch beneath the surface” the group have mixed pop and indie and added something very special to the mix.
 
From the horse’s mouth – ‘NIGHTBOX believe the invention of the drum kit has improved humanity’s standard of living more dramatically than penicillin, sliced bread, and the wheel combined. RoskaRinse FM, to many fans of underground music, is London. From its beginnings 16 years ago as a DIY pirate to a thriving empire, containing a studio, label, clubnight (the legendary FWD>>), it’s clear to see: without Rinse FM, dubstep, grime, UK Funky and the current wave of “post-dubstep” creatives wouldn’t exist the way you know them. They are responsible for bringing stars like Katy B and Magnetic Man and many more to a mainstream audience – Katy B and member of Magnetic Man, Skream will both be appearing at the stage along with Rinse founder Geneeus, internationally acclaimed electronic artist, DJ, and owner of the Hyperdub record label Kode 9, Roska, Ms Dynamite, Brackles and many more.
 
Busy P will be bringing his stamp to the RELENTLESS ENERGY DRINK ARENA as on Friday, iconic Parisian dance stable Ed Banger Records will launch a full-blown attack on Lovebox patrons ears by presenting enfant terrible SebastiAn, French house duo Cassius, electropop Lolita Uffie and DJ superteam Carte Blanche. Ed Banger head honcho Busy P will be teaming up with graphic designer and illustrator So Me to form Busy Pictionary. In a feast for the eyes and ears, So Me will be creating live artwork on stage whilst Busy P spins the decks. 
 
Flying LotusThe notorious Lovebox NYC Downlow stage,a mock down town sleaze club plays host to Vice. Taylor-made for London’s hippest bright young things, Friday’s festival-goers will be treated to a very special appearance from Baltimore Bass King, Spank Rock performing tracks from his forthcoming Boyz Noise produced album and Warp Records’ Hudson Mohawke will also be live on  stage unleashing his new eargley anticipated album. Label mate Flying Lotus headlines the live acts .The avant-garde L.A. native producer of otherworldy, and experimental,multi-genre sounds has been heavily influenced by his family’s jazz heritage as well as his love of drum and bass, West Coast gangsta rap and G-Funk melodies. A unique and pioneering electronic artist, his most recent album, Cosmogramma, has been described by Mary Anne Hobbs as “A completely new sonic language. Lotus is like Hendrix – he’s completely torn up the rule book in electronic music… I hear his sound echoing in every corner of the planet.” Also appearing will be Essex raver Herve and a extremely rare live slot by Photek.
 
The outdoor Gaymers live stage will see appearances from one of Britain’s most exciting live bands, the Wombats, 20-year-old singer songwriter Ed Sheeran and multi talented pop/rock six piece Architecture in Helsinki as well as performances from beatboxing festival regular Beardyman and indie-dance darlings Metronomy.
 
AeroplaneWe’re also pleased to announce a new arena – The Bacardi Get Together, which will provide surroundings perfectly encompassing both a place to soak up the festival atmosphere together over a BACARDÍ cocktail, and the ultimate place to party. With an eclectic spread of DJs, producers and crews over the course of all three days culminating in unforgettable ultimate finales where the crowds will see 3 DJ greats join forces behind the decks for a one off – never before heard ‘BACARDÍ Together Set’. Included in the impressive BACARDÍ Get Together Friday line up is Italian-Belgian maestro, Aeroplane, electro and techno Fabric resident, Stopmakingme and cutting edge DJs and founders of the Moda clubnight, Jaymo and Andy George.

Jelly Festival 2011 update

Dubbed ‘a family-friendly Secret Garden Party’ by the media, for the first time the Jelly Festival will be opening its doors to campers a day early so people can get settled for the fun that lies ahead. With fantastic acts such as The Freestylers, The Egg, Concrete Disco and bands from as far afield as Cuba confirmed to perform and a host of surreal sights to experience, this year’s Jelly Festival is set to be the best yet! 

Fantastic music lies at the heart of Jelly Festival and the aim of the organisers is to bring to Norfolk acts you already know as well as up and coming talent who you will be adding to your summer playlist as soon as the festival is over!

Real love and care has also gone into making Jelly Festival a surreal flight of fantasy served for your delectation on a wobbling plate that will be enjoyed by all ages; the festival stages are even styled on the fun concept of them being different rooms within a house!

The main ‘Living Room’ stage is modelled on a bizarre dream-like living room with sofas, lamps and plants and will play host to an eclectic range of music beginning with folk, Gypsy Jazz, and world music before hosting Indie, funk bands as the day goes on and dance music in the evening. 

On the other ‘Bedroom Bar’ stage will be the cream of local talent until 12 midnight then, when the Living Room stage closes, the party carries on into the small hours as the bedroom bar dance party, playing the freshest electronic beats, while the Circus Big Top ‘Bedroom Bar’ is modelled on a set of Pyjamas with a blue and red striped pattern and comfortable and relaxing décor. The music runs from 12 noon to 4 am Saturday night.

The Jelly Festival’s three bars stock the very best booze including delicious European lagers, wholesome local ales and fruity Pimms all at local pub prices. The cider bar meanwhile will provide festival-friendly litre bottles of quaffable cider, sourced from a farm just a bike ride down the road, while in the Cocktail bar Arthur and his team will be playing out the Tom Cruise role in the classic 80’s hit movie as Mojitos, slammers and other explosive concoctions will be flying over the bar!
A big part of the Jelly Festival ethos is to operate along ethical and environmentally friendly lines and support and promote the wonderful local family-run businesses of North Norfolk.

With this in mind, the ‘Kitchen’ brings together a wonderful selection of local food and drink stalls selling true gourmet grub at amazing prices. From Arthur Howell’s award winning burgers and sausages, Mandarin café from Banham selling Indian treats and Compton hog roast from the farm to Thai food from Fakenham, Norfolk cider, stone baked pizza from Norwich and Charcoal-grilled Cypriot food from Hunstanton there is guaranteed to be food to suit every taste and palette. 

On ‘the Garden Path’ there are arts and crafts stalls and demonstrations while kids will have the time of their lives in the custom-designed ‘Play Room’ with everything from bouncy and wobbly inflatables, climbables and ridables to interactive workshops so they can come away with some extra life skills. Throughout the festival, the family friendly vibe means kids can also just hang out with mum and dad and enjoy the music and when the day draws to a close, there is even a separate campsite for families to have their own world of peaceful bliss.

As the name suggests, the Jelly Festival is one big, glistening homage to all things Jelly and tonnes of the wobbly stuff will be served throughout the day including jelly cocktails and softer jelly treats for the kids with all donations going to Anglia Air Ambulance.

From the youngest sprog to the young at heart, more mature lover of great music and everyone else in between, Jelly Festival is a real melting pot with people milling about, dancing, laughing, making friends, and it’s one of the few places on earth you can see teenagers out with Mum and Dad, but not feeling embarrassed!

BBC Introducing Stage lineup for Glastonbury

The artists appearing on the stage represent the whole of the UK, with a diverse range of genres. The line up also includes three headliners who are all acts that BBC Introducing have supported from the early days and are now taking it to the next level – From the soulful voice of Suffolk’s Ed Sheeran on Friday, to The Good Natured’s electro-pop on Saturday and the rock sounds of Leeds band Vessels closing the stage on Sunday. It is the fifth time that the BBC Introducing stage has been at the festival, having launched itself at Glastonbury 2007.
 
Jason Carter, Editor, BBC Introducing, says: “The BBC Introducing stage at Glastonbury is a great platform for artists sourced via the BBC Introducing Network.
