Y Not Festival 2015- Review

Y Not Festival partied with the right people for its tenth birthday, celebrating with the likes of Snoop Dogg, Basement Jaxx, Primal Scream, Jonny Marr and a further eclectic mix of smaller music providing something for everyone.

The festival saw a mixture of people attending, all of different age groups with a designated camping area on site for families, catering for young and old, with an atmosphere of hippy and care-free vibes running throughout the whole weekend. Situated in rural Pikehall, Derbyshire across a vast amount of fields, in comparison to previous years it had definitely expanded. However, it wouldn’t be a challenge to walk from one end of the festival to the other within the space of fifteen minutes, so I’d still class it as a ‘small festival’. There was a dress up theme on the Saturday of ‘What I wanted to be when I grew up’ with plenty of super hero costumes, neon ravers and strangely animals.

FRIDAY

Reverend and the makers were an afternoon treat on the Friday, where they played both a mix of old and new material-which echoed an electronic feel throughout their set featuring some songs which some had been written in Jamaica. They did well interacting with the audience to get the crowd moving, especially to their catchy older tunes Heavyweight Champion of the World and He Said He Loved Me.

After a warm and sunny first day, Friday’s headliner Snoop Dogg closed the day full of live acts, and got the crowd going wild (even to the point where firecrackers were set off) to his set including tunes Gin and Juice, Drop it like it’s hot and Young wild and free.  It sounded very surreal when Snoop was bouncing off the audience addressing them “Matlock” as it seemed hard to believe that the rapper was actually there, in this small place in the Peak District performing to a huge crowd.

Although the all the live music had finished by 11pm, there were small tents dotted around the festival grounds where DJs including George Walford performed to party people until the  early hours of the morning which deemed very popular as the tents were packed with not much room to move about.

SATURDAY

Saint Raymond, a Nottingham based artist performed late afternoon on the Saturday, giving the audience a full hours-worth of indie pop tunes, which were really catchy numbers. Although the songs were quite samey you would probably dance to them even if you didn’t know them or hadn’t heard of them, especially their newer stuff. Young Blood and Bonfires were two stand out tunes that were enjoyable to listen to.

After a showery afternoon with ponchos galore, it managed to stay dry for one of the bands that were a main reason why Y Not was the place to be; Basment Jaxx. They didn’t fail to pull a great performance of the bag which included some of their absolute classics also mixed with their new songs, getting everyone dancing and singing to Romeo, Raindrops and closing with Where’s Your Head At. The end of their performance finished with a literal bang, full of confetti and fireworks which made the crowd want more.

SUNDAY

Rhodes played on the Sunday at the main stage where the majority of the audience were chilled out on the grass. Coming to see Rhodes was a choice well made. He lulled the audience into a soothing state with his distinct folk sound, which would be much needed for most people on the Sunday, after two or three massive days of music, giving people some ear TLC with his music.

Another artist who was an easy listen was Nick Mulvey who played at the Quarry Stage in the evening. He had crowds swaying during his performance as his guitar playing was pretty impressive, creating sounds that wouldn’t seem possible on the guitar and accompanied by his voice gave a calming act to the audience, a gem for a Sunday evening.

Primal Scream were the closing act on the Sunday where everyone old and young squeezed into the crowd to see the rock band with the all-time classics perform. The highlight was definitely Moving On Up, which got everyone singing. Although they put on an impressive show to close the festival, I would have preferred Basement Jaxx as the final act.

On the Sunday night there was a silent disco, which was a fun way to finish the festival off and is always hilarious when you take off your headphones to see everyone dancing and lip-syncing in silence.

Y Not offered festival-goers big names in music at a small scale venue. Pikehall, Derbyshire is a cosy location which seems to have expanded itself throughout its ten years of existence. It is a place where emerging artists are given the chance to perform alongside many local and up and coming artists who also take slots on the main stage. The atmosphere and set up of the place reminded me of a smaller scale Glastonbury festival with plenty to see and do. Including small tents with things to do before the music started, somewhere to go and get glitter on your face and your hair braided or even pick yourself up some off the hook outfit. Y Not provided an impressive selection of food ranging from noodle bars to beef burgers and also catered for the vegan and vegetarian festival goers. I’m excited to see what next year will bring, as I can only imagine even bigger and better. Y Not get yourself there next year, I definitely will be.

Dot To Dot announce another wave of artists for 2015

Winner of ‘Best Metropolitan Festival 2013’ at the UK Festival Awards, Dot To Dot Festival is established as the UKs premier festival for unearthing the hottest new talent around, alongside established acts from all over the globe. 2015 marks the festival’s 10th year and will see it returning to Manchester, Bristol and Nottingham from the 22nd to 24th May. Dot To Dot’s ever eclectic line-up is set to make this landmark year one of the biggest and best in the festival’s history.  Already confirmed so far is Nottingham’s latest success story Saint Raymond, critically acclaimed singer songwriter Rae Morris, Californian surf-pop duo Best Coast, the anthemic synth-pop of Prides and the notorious, visceral Fat White Family.

Kicking off the fourth announcement is Rhodes.  The 25-year-old troubadour from Hitchin has had a busy 18 months, with three EPs under his belt already and an eagerly anticipated debut album on the way. His epic balladry has drawn comparisons to Jeff Buckley, as well as Sam Smith, who you may have already seen him on tour with.

Ireland’s biggest indie-rock exports of recent years The Coronas also join the bill. The quartet specializes in catchy guitar hooks and towering melodies, which saw them beat U2 and Snow Patrol to Best Album at the Meteor Awards in their homeland. Their most recent effort The Long Way has seen the group take a more ambitious approach to their songwriting under the guidance of producer Eliott James (Kaiser Chiefs, Two Door Cinema Club, Noah and the Whale).

Amber Run, whose debut album 5am has just entered the top 20 in the UK midweek charts, play a slick brand of indie-pop with choruses that clearly have stadium ambition. Built on a foundation of rock, Nothing But Thieves mix a colorful pallet of fervent riffs, effortless falsetto vocals and hints of electronica. Manchester all female four PINS play a fierce brand of post-punk, which is well showcased amongst the glitter and middle finger salutes of recent single “Too Little Too Late”.

Sundara Karma boast indie anthems with sun soaked guitars turned all the way up to eleven. 23-year-old rock & roller Louis Berry has been described as “channelling the energy of Jerry Lee Lewis through the story-telling of Dylan”

Further additions include the urgent, staccato cool wave of All Tvvins, the honeyed balladry of Martin Luke Brown, the melancholy minimalism of Robyn Sherwell, as well as A.O.S.O.O.N , Aaron Keylock, Ady Suleiman, Amy Yon (Bristol only), Black Honey,                  C Duncan, Creepoid, Dark Waves, Daisy Victoria, Dralms, Easy Life, H.Hawkline, High Tyde, Jamie Lawson, K.I.D,  Ming City Rockers, Movie, NGOD, Nick Brewer, Nothing But Thieves, Pierce Brothers, PINS, Rag’n’Bone Man, Sam Sure, Seafret, Steve Parker, Sykes, Vaults and White.

Dot To Dot Organiser Anton Lockwood (of DHP Family) said: “We’re just over a month away until we bring you Dot to Dot’s 10th Birthday, something that we’re all very excited for! Of the latest additions to the line-up, one of our biggest ever to date, I’m delighted to welcome Rhodes to the bill who is set for big things for sure!”

For the uninitiated, Dot to Dot is all about bringing the best new music to some of the most forward-thinking venues in Manchester, Bristol and Nottingham. One wristband gains you access to 14 hours of music across multiple stages around your city of choice. Always progressing, the Northern Quarter will this year host Dot to Dot Manchester. Considered the creative quarter of the North West, the area is synonymous with arts and culture and its high concentration of independent venues will be sure to showcase the hottest new artists around. Mark Ronson, Everything Everything and more join T in the Park lineup

Following last week’s T in the Park line-up announcement, festival organisers DF Concerts and founding partner Tennent’s Lager have today announced some exciting new additions to the 2015 bill, including the unstoppable Mark Ronson (DJ set), Everything Everything, Admiral Fallow, Jack Savoretti, Rae Morris, Marmozets and Saint Raymond

The hugely in-demand, multi-Grammy Award-winning producer and musician Mark Ronson will make his T in the Park debut this July in what will surely be one of the most hotly anticipated DJ sets of the weekend at Strathallan Castle. Ronson returned with a bang at the end of last year with his record-breaking smash hit single Uptown Funk featuring Bruno Mars. He followed up with his brand new album Uptown Special – his most inventive and vibrant work to date – which became his first-ever number one album in the UK and entered the Top Ten on the Billboard 200 chart in the US when it was released earlier this year.

Since they appeared on the longlist of the BBC Sound of 2010 award, genre-defying, Manchester-based indie rock outfit Everything Everything have gone from strength to strength, receiving a prestigious Mercury Prize nomination for their debut album Man Alive. The band return with more unpredictable, infectious pop gems this spring, with the release of their third album Get to Heaven.

Glaswegian folk pop five-piece Admiral Fallow first played T in the Park in their former guise, when they headlined the T Break Stage in 2009 as the Brother Louis Collective. Through melding an indie-rock line-up with clarinet, flute, double bass, string section and two jaw-dropping vocals, they deliver beautifully eccentric and finely-crafted songs. Their debut album, Boots Met My Face, was packed with anthemic choruses and stomping Wilco-esque tunes, and its 2012 follow-up, Tree Bursts in Snow was similarly rapturously received by fans and critics alike.

When Jack Savoretti released his critically-acclaimed 2011 release Before The Storm, it earned him a well-deserved reputation as one of the most exciting new songwriting talents around. The record’s eagerly anticipated follow-up Written In Scars was released this month, showcasing his gorgeous, gritty, soul-soaked vocals and bringing to the fore his richly diverse influences.

Another hotly tipped singer-songwriter, Rae Morris was longlisted in the BBC Sound of 2015 poll, and released her dazzling debut album Unguarded at the beginning of the year. The album debuted at number nine on the UK Albums Chart, and earned major plaudits for its ethereal, atmospheric pop.

Marmozets’ debut album, The Weird and Wonderful Marmozets, made a big impression upon its release and won the band major critical acclaim for its huge, ambitious sound. Hailed as “the most exciting young band in Britain" by Kerrang!, they are set to play T in the Park for the first time this summer.

Saint Raymond was one of the most talked about acts of last year. His single Young Blood was Zane Lowe’s ‘Hottest Record in the World’ on Radio 1, and he secured the sole support slot for Haim’s sold-out UK and European tour. His self-penned, independently released debut Escapade EPshot up the iTunes album chart upon release.

With some of the biggest names in music heading for Scotland this summer, T in the Park’s debut outing at Strathallan Castle is already shaping up to be an unmissable weekend:

FRIDAY 10th JULY: Kasabian, David Guetta, Sam Smith, Rudimental, Fatboy Slim, Hozier, Mark Ronson (DJ set), Annie Mac, Hot Chip, The Wombats, Gorgon City, Duke Dumont, Jessie Ware, Fuse ODG

SATURDAY 11th JULY: Avicii, The Libertines, The Script, Twin Atlantic, alt-J, George Ezra, Jessie J, Courteeners, The Vaccines, Labrinth, The Proclaimers, St. Vincent, Enter Shikari, Seasick Steve, Jungle, Paul Heaton & Jacqui Abbott, Idlewild, Jess Glynne, Charli XCX, Jack Savoretti, Rae Morris

SUNDAY 12th JULY: Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, The Prodigy, Stereophonics, Jamie T, Paloma Faith, Above & Beyond, Alabama Shakes, Kodaline, Catfish & the Bottlemen, Clean Bandit, Oliver Heldens, Ella Henderson, Modest Mouse, James Bay, Years & Years, Peace, Everything Everything, Admiral Fallow, Marmozets, Saint Raymond

Also joining Dot To Dot 2015 are Canadian punk-rock band Single Mothers and New York based indie-rockers, Cymbals Eat Guitars.

Glaswegian duo Honeyblood bring their brand of grunge-pop to the festival alongside the folk infused Haim-esque harmonies from Australian trio Little May and Hinds (formerly known as Deers), the garage rock up and comers from Madrid. Laura Doggett (whose music you may recognise from ITV Series Broadchurch) will also perform with her distinctive soulful sound along with the hotly tipped pop fuzz of Menace Beach. Further along the line up, Dot To Dot fans can expect to hear sensual R&B pop courtesy of Brooklyn based singer Tei Shi, atmospheric indie sounds from Racing Glaciers and 4-piece Welsh rock band Pretty Vicious who’ll perform their angsty anthems at the Bristol and Nottingham dates.
