Interview with Dreadzone

You’ll be playing Glade and Glastonbury this year; will you be sticking round to watch any other artists? If so who are you most looking forward to?

Trentmoller is on the Friday at Glade so will definitely be catching him. He is one of my favourite artists, in fact one of the most innovative in the whole electronic music scene. It is possible that we willonly be there for the one day though so will only be checking people on that day.

Your live performances are known to be very different from your studio work, what can fans expect from the live shows coming up this summer?

A lot of energy and a bunch of tunes from our best of Dreadzone release ‘The Good, The Bad and The Dread’ plus some from our last album ‘Eye on the Horizon’. As myself and Leo have been off doing Big Audio Dynamite shows we are bringing back a high level of playing power into our set, so it should be well bouncing.

How do you think your 2010 album ‘Eye On the Horizon’ album translates to a live setting?

We play quite a lot from the new album and it translates really well. They are quite song orientated so maybe more linear stuff will work better at Glade. Different tunes work for different shows but the new stuff stands up well next to the more well known tunes.

You guys have seen some big changes in the music industry since the days of playing with Big Audio Dynamite, how do you think the industry has changed since then?

The landscape has changed so much that its a challenge to keep fresh enough to stay afloat.  There is lot less long term investment so its harder to build a band, the benefits are it makes more artists be more independent and understand the mechanics of the industry.

Has this affected the live shows that you do?

It has meant that a lot more work comes from the touring and less from the records. We always seem to be on the road, especially at festivals

You released a greatest hits album recently, are there plans to record some fresh material?

I am currently working up a lot of new ideas for a Dreadzone library album and that will form the basis of our next record. We are always writing and formulating new ideas. The next Dreadzone album will be more live, dynamic and be made quicker than the last. And a bit more rock and roll

With Big Audio Dynamite on tour again, you’re only playing a few gigs this summer, does that mean Dreadzone is on hold for now, or do you have plans for the band once the B.A.D tour is over?

We are trying hard to keep the two in tandem, some of the BAD schedule affects the Dreadzone schedule for a few months but we have a full UK tour planned for Dreadzone for late summer/autumn plus a bunch of festivals. Dreadzone are never on hold.

What artists are you listening to at the moment? What are the most played tracks on your IPod?

Trentmoller, Foo Fighters, Dubstep, film soundtracks, Led Zeppelin, Jamie Woon, James Blake, 140 breaks, Queens of the Stone Age

You’ve seen the dub, dubstep and electronica scene change and grow over the past years what do you think will be the next thing to shape the UK music scene?

It’s impossible to know where the innovation will come from next but am pleased to see and hear stuff that comes from dub foundations to make an impact on the scene so much. The space, production and ideas are so forward thinking.

James Blake special performance at The Big Chill

James BlakeJames Blake ventured to some of London’s cutting edge dubstep clubs; DMZ and FWD>> around 2007 and was truly taken aback by the fresh sounds and atmosphere. Already studying popular music at Goldsmiths, the injection of inspiration from DJs such as Mala, Coki and Digital Mystikz propelled Blake down a path that led to the creation the now distinctive sound, which blended the electronic vibrancy of the emerging dubstep scene with the harmonies found in his teenage Motown-filled record collection.

Plays of his early singles on Rinse FM and feverous blogger attention sent Blake on a course which landed him several accolades. “CMYK” scored a Record of the Week from Nick Grimshaw and Single of the Year (2010) at Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Awards, Blake’s reworking of the Feist track “Limit to your Love” was the Hottest Record in the World according to Zane Lowe. Following a year of concentrated recording Blake released his self-titled debut in February 2011 and the record quickly went on to become a top 10 hit, whilst the same year also saw Blake pick up a nomination for the Critics’ Choice category at the Brit Awards.

With contemporaries such as Jamie Woon, Digital Mystikz, Jamie xx and DJ Distance already confirmed for The Big Chill, Blake is a perfect addition to the now expanded festival.

Deer Shed Festival unveils arts program & gastronomic delights

Having already unveiled an enviable music line-up and more crafts and sports activities than a hundred episodes of Blue Peter rolled into one, Deer Shed Festival has also lined up artists and performing artists for this year’s event who will be creating work that evolves throughout the day and holding workshops for festival goers to get involved in.

Graffiti crew Best Joined Up mix classic street styles with fine art, a mash-up you could say. Creating artworks on Saturday, they will also be running tagging workshops on Sunday. As if traditional Morris dancing was not entertaining enough, how about Morris dancing with a gothic twist? Deer Shed Festival welcomes Jet Set Gothic Morris Dancers all the way from the spiritual home of goth – Whitby, North Yorkshire. Faery Floss combine two seeming unrelated thing as they offer relaxing yoga sessions over the weekend as well as supplying the festival audience with organic candy floss.

Cabinet Fatalia, all the way from Germany, combines (and we’re quoting here, obviously) “elements of freakshow, object theatre and cabinet of curiosities. The 6-wheel-mobile includes a chamber of mysterious viewing boxes, strangely animated furniture, convulsive forms and phantom guests. Fatalia’s viewing boxes are miniature constructions and hermetic dream worlds, in which secret desires, memories and present perceptions coexist.” Ooh err.

Duckett & Jeffreys Gallery are bringing their mobile gallery to the Deer Shed Festival site. The DJ Tour vehicle is a small but perfectly formed 1960’s dinky Sprite Caravan and will be exhibiting original artworks in CD cases. And on the final day of the festival, the Big Top will be home to a Sunday market with a wide variety of arts, crafts and vintage wares on sale, all from local Yorkshire artists.

And now on to the food…

As an army marches better on a full stomach, so a festival audience dances better full of good food and drink.  This year Deer Shed Festival has put together a mouth-watering menu to ensure festival goers of all tastes will be catered for.

There’s the French version of a Yorkshire pudding only flat and sweet from Absolute Crepe and The Crepe Company. According to Wikipedia, crepes are best served with cider. Luckily there are three bars on site selling drinks at pub prices so that’s an easy duo for festival-goers to get their hands on. Bars will be selling local Yorkshire real ale and one will have a late-night, drinking den flavour just for the grown-ups. Keeping on an international theme, they’ll be German sausages to make the eyes water from Bratengrill, pizzas courtesy ofPizza Farm, delicious selection of curries from Sizzle & Spice and oriental catering from Takodo.

Carnivores can choose from oak-smoked wraps from Dorset Smokery, hot pork sandwiches from Farmers Oven, ostrich burgers fromHolly Tree Farm and venison stew from Oldfields. Vegetarians can feast on award winning veggie burgers, falafel, hummus and a 13 ingredient salad from Goodness Gracious Healthy Foods and both carnivores and vegetarians can get stuck into hot Mexican food fromFood Bums Chilli Bar.

Geoff Allan Fish and Chips will be bringing good ol’ fashioned fish suppers to the Deer Shed Festival site and award winning pie maestrosI Pies return with their handmade pies, quiches and tarts. A firm favourite last year, Stovepuppets bring back their Yorkshire puds served with a choice of fillings and Lucky Chip is a pop-up version of a classic American diner with a difference, serving hand-cut chips with home-made sauces and a selection of nut and veggie burgers.

Yee Kwan’s award winning, Far Eastern-inspired, handcrafted ice creams and sorbets make the perfect dessert after one of the above treats or there’s Simply Strawberries (cream and chocolate sauce optional!). All dinners can be finished off with a lovely cup of steaming hot Joe from Coffee Galore.

Lullabelles Lunches will be serving delicious and tempting treats from Lullabelle, a pink VW campervan, while Oso Juicy will be dispensing super tasty smoothies from Poppy, their campervan-come-mobile-smoothie-shop. Fresher Snacks are bringing the Toastie House full of snacky delicacies to site and for those with a sweet tooth, Dinky DoughnutsMoo Moo’s Milkshake Bar and Joneva will be on hand to sate the sugar cravings.

Music, arts, crafts, food, drink, sports – the Deer Shed Festival has it all for families this July.

Steve Reich unable to travel for Sónar Festival

The composer and pianist Carles Santos, one of the most reputed artists in contemporary Spanish music will substitute Steve Reich on the pieces which should have been performed by the American author. Carles Santos joins the bcn216 orchestra and chorus Synergy Vocals, maintained therefore the foreseen repertoire intact for the Sonar 2011 inaugural concert at L’Auditori Barcelona. Both programmed pieces, “Sextet” and “Music for 18 Musicians”, will be interpreted entirely and without changes.

L’Auditori Barcelona and the Sonar festival organization have invited Carles Santos to join the project, who has confirmed immediately his interest in participating as a personal homage to Steve Reich, one of his most admired composers and of whom he has already interpreted part of his work on other occasions.

Village People to judge Bestival’s Fancy Dress Competition

Taking time out from rummaging through his extensive dressing up box, Rob da Bank said: ‘I can’t think of a more suitable act to judge this year’s Fancy Dress competition than the Village People! They practically invented the genre so prepare to put some effort in to wow the cowboy, impress the policeman or win over the Red Indian with your best Rock Star, Pop Star or Diva… The combinations are endless and, as ever, Bestivalites are invited to use their imaginations and not stick to the script’

As we know from years gone by creativity knows no bounds for you lot, so in return for giving us an upfront glimpse of your amazing creations you could be in with a chance of winning a lifetimes supply of Bestival tickets! All you have to do to enter is send us a photo of you dressed up in your Rock Star, Pop Star or Diva get-up to [email protected] and we’ll post them on our Facebook pagewww.facebook.com/bestivalfestival in a Rock Stars Pop Stars and Divas photo album. The Village People will then choose either the most radically rock n roll, the topper-most of the popper-most or deliciously Diva-ish costume from all of the entries on Friday 2nd Septemberand the winners will get their hands on that coveted lifetime’s supply of Bestival tickets, whilst two runners-up will bag a Bestival hoodie each, so make sure you email your pics in now for your chance to win!

David Hodo, the “Construction Worker” of Village People said: ‘Village People dress up in costumes every time we go on stage.  It will be fun to judge other people who get dressed up also. We are so looking forward to being judges at the competition for Bestival 2011.’

As well as all the dressing up fun, the Bestival crew has decided to salute our pick of the heroes that make Bestival the truly wonderful fun-filled weekend it is. Working with the Big-Top Trumps game company from the Isle of Wight, we’ve commissioned a special limited edition game of Super Bestival Heroes Top Trumps for 2011, celebrating the people who are doing something special and wacky to help raise money for charity, raise the spirits or just make you feel that little bit better when you’re at Robin Hill.

Each Super Bestival Hero has an individual card with their special skills and Rock star points, BPMsLunacy level, Stamina required and the Big Love their activity generates. The rules are just like Top Trumps, the top score wins in each category and the winner is the one with all the cards. You can download the game for free from our Besti-Blog so click the link, print out the page and cut around the cards for an ace game; guaranteed to make the ferry journey over to the Isle of Wight or early morning in your tent a little more fun.

And here’s just a little reminder that you if you haven’t already, you can download the cut and paste-tastic Nextmen Vs Bestival 2011featuring the crème de la crème of acts appearing at Bestival (with a sprinkling of Camp Bestival acts thrown in for good measure) all mixed with pin-point perfection from the Besti-Blog.
