For the first time ever Standon Calling will open its doors early on Thursday afternoon and evening to extend what's already set to be a truly unforgettable weekend. The festival boasts an impressive musical line-up including the likes of Suede, Jess Glynne, Kelis, Everything Everything, The Hives and many more, plus its biggest family and food programmes to date. The Welcome Feast now adds even more reasons to head to Standon Calling this year.

Revealing a mouth watering line-up of food and drink last month including Le Bun, Club Mexicana, Maltby Market legends Waffle On, Made Of Dough, Cheeky Italian, Mac Factory as well as Standon Calling's own pop restaurant by Ceru, the festival will bring them all together for an evening of incredible food. Many traders will be offering smaller dishes of their signature dishes for £5 and under for hungry festival-goers that really want to take advantage of the feast. A Real Ale Bar co-curated by Hertfordshire
As well as offering delectable food and drink, The Welcome Feast will include Wandering Musicians playing acoustic folk and sea shanties along with Songs around the Campfire to bring the Standon Calling community together. Family activities and games are also on offer and Hot Tubsand Piano Bar provide respite from the action for those that like to relax before the full festival begins.
Standon Calling is the ultimate overgrown manor house party, offering renowned and upcoming acts, immersive theatre, a host of weird and wonderful workshops, fantastic family programme, talks, the annual dog show, a fancy dress parade and of course its own heated outdoor swimming pool. The story for this year is Legend of the Lost Seas, which will see the boutique festival pulling out all the stops for an immersive ride from start to finish. 2016 is shaping up to be a special year indeed.

Chapter 2
Last year, the Carvetti people, an Iron Age civilisation thought to be lost to the World, were astonishingly found alive. They called the woods at Kendal Calling – ‘Lost Eden’ – their home. To celebrate this momentous anthropological discovery, 25,000 revellers joined them in a joyous riot of light and sound. In 2015 the bizarre imprints of the Carvetti culture were numerous: a van carved with trees, an avenue of sound-emitting streetlamps, a fiery garden and a towering, swirling orb, to name but a few.

Taking from all corners of pop, urban and dance music, Sundown Festival returns in 2016 with its biggest lineup yet. With huge names already announced including headliners Chase & Status and Jason Derulo, pop superstars Jess Glynne and Fleur East and grime godfathers Dizzee Rascal and Kano, even more names are joining the party!
Since toppling Bieber off of the top spot in the Official UK Top 40 Singles Chart with his smash hit ‘Easy Love’, Norwich’s own Sigala has become one of the country’s most in demand DJs and producers. His current single, the Nile Rogers and John Newman collaboration ‘Give Me Your Love’, is a summery slice of tropical house and his set on the main stage is not to be missed. Also joining the main stage lineup are purveyor of sun-soaked, infectious reggae Kiko Bun, BRIT nominees Stooshe and chart-topping pop starlet Becky Hill.
With Sundown teaming up with Defected, Ministry Of Sound, UKF and Drum & Bass Arena this year to bring two dance-dedicated tents to the festival full of some of the biggest names in house, dnb, garage and more, those looking to party the weekend away need look no further. Joining the Defected In The House stage is Italian house master Crookers and over in the Drum & Bass Arena, Ram Records’ Culture Shock joins the already stacked lineup.
Expanding in 2016 to three stages for the first time, Sundown Festival is the essential closing party of the summer festival season for revelers looking for one last dance in the sun.

Mysteryland, the longest running dance festival in the world, reveals the Holy Ground Camping program with a wealth of exclusive performances and back-to-back sessions that won’t be heard at any other festival. These range from Seth Troxler playing back-to-back with Skream and Tom Trago, Afrojack playing a techno set alongside Benny Rodrigues, Dave Clarke executing a classic techno session and Breach b2b with Cinnaman.
The Holy Ground Camping will host the pre-party on Friday August 26th and the after-party on Saturday August 27th at the Camping Circus and Saloon. Afrojack will play an exclusive techno set with Benny Rodrigues, Dave Clarke will execute a classic techno session and Laidback Luke will once again return to the sounds from it all began: the 80’s and 90’s. Seth Troxler will take over the Saloon on Saturday with his Big Tittie Surprise imprint showcasing a special b2b set alongside Skream and Tom Trago.

Nick van de Wall, better known as Afrojack: “Benny Rodrigues is the first DJ that ever inspired me to become a great DJ, to this day he’s still my favourite house/techno DJ, and it’s not only a great personal experience for me to DJ back-to-back with him, but also an honour”.
Mysteryland loves surprises. At the Camping Circus on Friday, hardstyle rockers Psyko Punkz tackle techno and Dirt Caps plays their favourite hip-hop tracks. On the same day, local heroes join forces with international masterminds, as The Saloon welcomes Cinnaman to the stage with Breach, the British DJ and producer who had the worldwide hit ‘Jack’ and has collaborated with Kelis and Andreya Triana. Continuing the theme of cross-border collaborations, San Proper teams up with Chicago house legend Tyree Cooper,William Kouam Djoko invites Ryan Crosson from Visionquest into the booth, and Boris Werner will join the stage together with Parisian Djebali for a back-to-back mix.
This year visitors will be able to stay at the Holy Ground Camping from Friday August 26th until Monday August 29th, giving festivalgoers more time to party and to discover the wide range of music, art and culture on show. In 2015, the Holy Ground Camping passes sold out in two hours, and with the entertainment announced for 2016 they are expected get snapped up in a flash once again! Visitors who secure a ticket for the Holy Ground Camping, have the option to sleep over after the festival in their own tent, or select from a range of luxury camping options available, such as a tipi or a luxurious tent with real beds. Mysteryland takes place on Saturday August 27th and Sunday August 28 in Haarlemmermeer, The Netherlands. This year, Mysteryland bursts at the seams with two full days of stages showcasing sounds from: EDM to afrobeat, techno to hiphop and hardstyle to disco. On the line-up are world class players such as Diplo, Afrojack, Martin Garrix, MK, Sam Feldt and Sander van Doorn, underground heroes including Dave Clarke, Detroit Love, Apollonia, KARENN (live), Baba Stiltz, Rebekah, Studio Barnhus, Boys Noize, Kim Ann Foxman and a special performance from Surgeon featuring Lady Starlight, plus many many more.
Prestigious art installations
The Culture & Arts program of Mysteryland this year is world class. Several leading international artists create installations for the festival. The Mainstage is designed by American Kate Raudenbush, who is best known for her work at Burning Man Festival. As a gesture to all residents of the city of Haarlemmermeer, artist duo ATM creates a lasting work of art from recycled wood beneath the infamous pyramid. The collective WERC will be at the foot of the imposing pyramid with a light installation on the water where all luminous elements can move independently.

Additional bands are still to be announced.
The Bestival family has a long and august history of going that extra mile, making the world of festivals bigger, better and brighter. And this year is no exception, pushing the boundaries of bobbing up and down to the very limit, we’ve teamed up with our old muckers, Cardiff-based Something Creatives to make what we think is the world’s biggest bouncy castle! Aiming to add to our accolades for the world’s largest fancy dress party, the biggest busk ever and our colossal disco ball, this could well be the greatest inflatable on Earth, and it’s making its debut at Common People in Southampton this coming bank holiday weekend!
Rob da Bank says: “We do love breaking a record and this is one of our funnest builds so far. Me and my mate Matt from the infamous Inflatable Church had a pipe dream about five years ago of building the world’s biggest bouncy castle, and this summer we’re making that a reality. So polish your socks and step up for what will be one of the most innocent of pleasures – bouncing up and down with gay abandon with your mates, family or friendly strangers. See you on the castle!”
Something Creatives’ Matt the Hat commented: “I’ve always been the first kid in the sandpit and consider play a fundamental part of everyday life. Everyone should find the time to play. The playful spirit of creating joy and fun is shared by Rob da Bank and all of the Bestival family and has made this brilliantly bonkers idea a reality. Whether you’re young or old, what could be more fun than jumping around inside the biggest bouncy castle in the world? Just watch out for the ‘bouncers’, and remember if you’re wearing shoes then you can’t come in!”
Everyone loves a bouncy castle. That’s a fact. And we’ve got even more facts about our blow up bastion that could see us heading for the record books once again. Smashing an almost 20-year-old record and measuring a frankly epic23.8 metres long and 20.7 metres wide our bouncy castle stands 12.8 metres tall at its highest point; the side turrets are equal in height to the walls of Cardiff Castle, making it taller than the Great Wall of China and roughly three times the size of the Berlin Wall! Filled with 1143 cubic metres of air it can comfortablyaccommodate 100 pleasure-seeking festivalgoers at one time.
Quite simply massive, it’s an inflatable legend in the making, don’t miss the chance to have a jump around on our historic bouncy castle at Common People, Southampton this 28th & 29th May, and then at Camp Bestival 28th-31stJuly and Bestival from 8th – 11th September.
Bouncy Castle Comparison:
Length Width Height
Word’s Biggest Bouncy Castle: 23.8m 20.7m 12.8m
Previous Record Holder: 19m 19m 12m

There’s less than 100 days until BLOODSTOCK 2016!! While we’ve been revealing many killer bands for you to mosh to all festival, there’s plenty more on-site to see and do besides watch the awesome bill (and for regulars, we don’t mean bin-jousting or Deli Kate)! BLOODSTOCK knows the meaning of both heavy and metal…!
While you might be feeling a little weakened at times over the weekend (especially if you’ve been taking advantage of the real ales on site), BLOODSTOCK are delighted to welcome some of the strongest people in the world to the festival! For the first time, BLOODSTOCK and the 100% CA team will host 2 special strongmen events. On Saturday, 20 top athletes from across Europe will compete for the title of ‘Europe’s Strongest Man Under 90kgs’. Then on Sunday, see what pure strength is all about, in the ‘BLOODSTOCK’s Strongest Man’ challenge, showcasing some of the biggest and strongest competitors handpicked from around the world. Don’t worry, they’re not planning a face-off with festival attendees, but we wouldn’t recommend spilling their pint.
Over the 2 days, the athletes will complete 2 events in each title, including a max deadlift event, and we hope to see 400kgs pulled on Sunday! Plus, an overhead log-press for reps, a loading medley consisting of 5 objects, 2 which weigh 19 stone! Not to mention, a gruelling back-to-back tug of war. Joining us, will be World’s Strongest Man and Arnold’s competitor, the South of England’s Strongest Man Rob Frampton, and Dave Meer, the local Tamworth multi-record-breaking strongman who has competed in the UK’s Strongest Man numerous times. With the support of XplosiveApe, USN, and Rebel Strength, we will be bringing you the best in the country!
If swords and armour are more your thing, don’t miss the ferocious BATTLE OF THE NATIONS UK historical fighting team, on site from Friday-Sunday! BLOODSTOCK is thrilled – if slightly trepadacious – that they can lay waste to Catton Park again this August. The UK Federation regularly compete around the world, and are ranked among the very best. Look out for their regular “demonstrations” (by which we mean, a no-holds-barred full-contact scrap with broad swords, maces, and an array of other brutal Medieval weaponry) in the main arena. We wouldn’t recommend spilling their mead either.
Field Captain Rob ‘Moose’ Morris comments, “BLOODSTOCK is always the most popular event we host in the tournament calendar. The unique atmosphere and amazing music always combine to a complete unreal experience. Showing the music fans what being a real metal-head involves; wearing 16kg of armour and caning the hell out of your opponent in August!” Wish them luck with their BLOODSTOCK warm up this month, taking on the Battle Of The Nations World Championships in both the classic 5v5 Bohurt and female fighter categories.
On the musical side, already announced for 2016 are our three headliners, TWISTED SISTER (in their last ever UK show), MASTODON and SLAYER, plus special guests BEHEMOTH, GOJIRA and ANTHRAX. Also on the bill are FEAR FACTORY, CORROSION OF CONFORMITY, SYMPHONY X, SATYRICON, PARADISE LOST, DRAGONFORCE, METAL ALLEGIANCE, STUCK MOJO, ROTTING CHRIST, MISERY LOVES CO, GHOST BATH, VENOM, UNEARTH, DIAMOND HEAD, GOATWHORE, ACID REIGN and many, many more. Additional bands are being announced regularly so keep up to date via BLOODSTOCK’s official sites at www.facebook.com/bloodstock and www.bloodstock.uk.com, or via Twitter on @BLOODSTOCKFEST.
We all know how most UK festivals work- you show up, you camp somewhere, usually muddy and wet, you sneak a few bottles under your shirt/short/hat/combination and you head to the arena for some musical action. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a massive festival fan, but the Great Escape is a different kind of festival altogether. It’s almost completely focused on ‘new music’, and with that tagline comes a whole new era of ‘festival’ in general. Although it is a brilliant collection of new music, with everything from up-and-coming indie bands to an underground grime scene, whether it’s festival status is truly deserved, is debatable. You don’t have the same camaraderie as camping in a field and getting wasted with your friends, it’s a completely urban environment and I can imagine for a non-brighton dweller can be quite hard to navigate.
For those of you who are unaware of what the Great Escape is, it’s a four day extravaganza in which various venues around Brighton host gigs and events under the same umbrella.
I grew up in Brighton, and seeing the Great Escape flourish every year has been a real beauty to behold. It puts the city in a good mood, there are loads of artists wandering around, I get to go to venues I’ve never been to before or wouldn’t go to without reason. It’s nice to promote new talent and isn’t massively overpriced for what it is. There’s a lot of nice little treats that come with your wristband, like a couple of free drinks at certain places or discounts on food and fringe events. It makes the city way more lively and you look at Brighton through rose tinted glasses, it brings a bucket load of atmosphere to my friendly city.
The long weekend itself was hectic, Some of the acts were unrefined, some were okay and some to be quite frank, some were pretty dreadful – with new music comes it’s fair share of risk – but when you get the one show that gives you the ‘I’m going to be able to brag about seeing these guys before they were famous’ feeling, it gives you goose bumps and an air of cockiness that lasts all evening, and that’s what GE is all about.
The festival is well known for its urban music vibes, with patterns showcasing Lady LeShurr in a packed out, madly energetic gig, however even with Stormzy playing a ‘spotlight show’ and music from Craig David’s new DJ act TS5, there was a very melancholic, Scandi-Pop, indie vibe to the majority of the festival, but that might be tailored to maybe the shows I happened to catch. A few favourites to call out were HER and SISKA, both French and both very different. The first was oozing sex all over the hope and ruin and had powerful vocals with highly sensual lyrics. The latter was a soulful, almost folky, bass filled vibe with some of the best vocals I heard all weekend.
Alongside all the lesser known artists, there were still some heavyweights pulling crowds to bigger venues, with Jake Bugg bringing the energy to Wagner Hall, which in itself is a masterpiece, even if a little hard to find. An amazing tucked away venue behind Saint Peters church- outdoors, fairy lights, and a cute little bar with a stage surrounded by foliage. It’s the type of place you had to stay at all day to see the one act you were actually interested in at 21:30. Mystery Jets also played a lively set, with a more prog-influenced feel than anything we’ve seen from them before at the Corn Exchange, a venue more central, capable of holding bigger crowds, and one of the best organised throughout the festival. The newly rejuvenated ‘Old Market’ also saw its fair share of action, with The Temper Trap playing a beautiful Amazon Live: Front Row gig, bringing a fresh lease of life to the venue.
Alongside the full blown Great Escape, is its rebellious little sibling that crops up all over the shop, The Alternative Escape. Although technically still a branch from the same tree, the Alternative Escape boasts something a little different, showcasing newer acts from specific labels and the Black Lion pub even hosting a few more learned events and East Street Tap remaining a hot spot for music and some definite refreshment throughout the evening.
It’s been over ten years since its humble beginnings in 2006, and although it’s continuing to bloom into a must-see of the summer, I do feel it needs to be slightly refined. They’ve got some great ideas and concepts, but the venues need to be stronger, maybe a few more outdoors stages, a few more quirky events, and just that little bit extra on top of the music. The music is great, but when you hit a three hour lull in the middle of a saturday afternoon, I can imagine those of us not from Brighton would feel quite irritable, which is the last thing you want in a crowd. But I say this from the perspective of a mum wanting to see it’s baby do well. The focus is on the music and the bands, and that’s something that gives it an edge, which can be lacking from the larger, more mainstream festivals these days. Things are only going to get better, and I for one can’t wait till next year.
