Camp Bestival 2013 Review

The sixth annual Camp Bestival came to a close this weekend, and married with ideal weather, a fantastic array of food stalls, and a friendly vibe, the musical line-up far exceeded expectations.

The action kicked off on the Castle Stage on Friday with the Jaipur Brass Band playing their infectious traditional Indian music among a splash of colour, followed by the impressive Kate Bush imitator Fake Bush.

The main stage action really picked up with a string of top performances; The Correspondents, Camp Bestival favourites, whipped the crowds up with their zany mix of hip-hop, drum 'n' bass and funk; The Farm took the whole field back to 1990 with a set including 'Stepping Stone' and the anthemic 'All Together Now'; and Irish rock royalty Ash played a fantastic career spanning set of hits including the wide-eyed innocence of early breakthrough 'Girl From Mars', 'Shining Light' and the all-out stomper 'Orpheus'.

Camp Bestival

Getting out of the welcome sun, we headed to the Big Top, and caught Max Romeo, late replacement for Toots & The Maytals, mid set. A raucous crowd lapped up the Reggae legends set, and the roof nearly came off for 'I Chase The Devil'.

Staying in the Big Top, London Grammar, the first of the weekend's true up-and-coming new bands, took to the stage, and the three-piece's beautiful and moody set was one of the highlights of the festival. Hannah Reid's vocals reminiscent of Florence Welch, and a musical undercurrent with hints of The XX and Massive Attack, their impending album is now a must buy.

Veering away from music for a while we stayed to watch John Cooper Clarke, and while the legendary Punk Rock Poet was in fine form, his set was slow to begin, blighted by a bleed of sound from the Bollywood Dance Tent – a disturbance which blighted many of the acts in the Big Top.
Friday's headliner was guitar icon Richard Hawley, fresh from having headlined Bridport's Electric Palace the night previous. We went back to the main stage with muted expectations, and it made what followed even more special. Hawley's languid and soulful vocals, and sublime guitar, made for a low energy but fully engaging set, with 'Tonight The Streets Are Ours' a real festival moment.

On the way back to the tents we stopped off for a late night treat in the form of the dark and humorous Filthy Boy, the young group show a sound and style beyond their teenage years, and single 'Waiting on the Doorstep' was a particular stand-out.

Saturday, as usually is the case, had the strongest line-up. The day began with kids' hero Mr Tumble delighting the packed main stage field, followed by the Horrible Histories show. Using the kids entertainment as an excuse to explore the other entertainment and food on offer, we took in some of the extreme sports in the Freesports Park; walked through the Dingly Dell; cleared our heads with fresh coconut water; and proceeded to eat brunch at the incredible Young British Foodies. The tent was a popular stop for meals at any time of day, offering everything from smoothies and waffles, to sushi and venison burgers.

Saturday's musical offerings kicked off with american songstress Lissie, whose bluesy LA rock was the perfect accompaniment to the rapidly rising sun.  Next up was one of the sets of the weekend. Gabrielle Aplin, who last year played the bandstand stage at Camp Bestival to around 100 people, has jumped into the public eye following a Christmas advert hit, and subsequent number 2 album. The 20-year-olds main stage set included a breath-taking cover of 'The Power of Love', as well as hit singles 'Panic Cord', 'Home' and brilliant cover of the Fleetwood Mac favourite 'Go Your Own Way'.

Camp Bestival favourites The Cuban Brothers were next up, mixing hilarious quips from frontman Miguelito with high energy latin-flavoured party funk. The rapidly growing Castle Stage crowd were at once laughing hysterically and dancing madly!
Spinning his wheels of steel, Grandmaster Flash took the generation-bridging crowds hip-hop, jazz, rock and more.
The church silence allowed for a break from the searing heat, and on the way back to the tent from Grandmaster Flash, I managed to catch the last few songs from country blues newcomer Valerie June. The Tennessee native performed some of the fantastic roots-inspired tracks from her brilliant debut album 'Pushin' Against a Stone'.

Returning to the main stage, Camp Bestival's 'special guest' Mark Owen mixed songs from this new album 'The Art of Doing Nothing' with Take That classics, including what has become his signature tune 'Shine'. Surely a highlight for many of the mums in the field!
Heading to the Big Top for the last time on Saturday, Clean Bandit produced a set of set of unique dance music, incorporating huge club beats with classical string parts. The Cambridge quartet had the crowd eating up every track, and seem destined for big things.

Closing off the main stage on Saturday, Kid Creole & The Coconuts return to the Camp Bestival stage for a 30s and 40s inspired party set, channelling the spirit of Cab Calloway, and leading into main headliner Levellers.
The festival favourites produced a set of high-energy folk-rock, with 'Beautiful Day' a soundtrack anthem for a sun-drenched Saturday.

The Castle Stage kicked off with cider swilling old boys The Wurzels, and was followed by the shanty-singing Skinny Lister, who joined the crowd in a drink and a good dance.
Sunday afternoon really got going and went back to the 80s with Nik Kershaw, playing hits including 'The Riddle', '
I Won't Let the Sun Go Down on Me', and 'I Am The One and Only', the hit Kershaw wrote for Chesney Hawkes. Heaven 17 followed Kershaw, performing a rapturously received set kicking off with '(We Don't Need This) Fascist Groove Thang' and also featuring 'Penthouse and Pavement', and huge hit 'Temptation'.

Camp Bestival favourites Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip return for their first performance for three years in the Big Top next. Their unique combination of Pip's spoken word/rap/poetry and Le Sac's bass and beats went down a storm, although the set was slightly marred by the Bollywood bass once more.
Before closing act Labrinth, we stayed after Dan Le Sac v Scroobius Pip for comedy headliner Alan Davies, and support from Ian Stone. Stone's near-the-knuckle repertoire was well received, and Davies' hilarious parental anecdotes were the perfect material for 'family-friendly' Camp Bestival.

Labrinth @ Camp Bestival

The finale for the 2013 event began on the Castle Stage with Labrinth, – Sunday's musical headliner – who delivered a surprisingly good set featuring singles 'Earthquake', 'Beneath You're Beautiful' and a cover of Tinie Tempah's 'Pass Out' (a track Labrinth collaborated on). The Castle Field was at full capacity at this point, awaiting the always popular firework spectacular, and the show didn't disappoint. Son Et Lumiere's show, projecting a wonderful animation based on the festival's 'Around The World' theme, was brilliantly interspersed with a pyro display to match any other.

With summer holidays around the corner we can’t wait to get back to Lulworth Castle for a festi-holiday weekend of fun and frolics for all the family from August 1st– 4th. And the Camp Bestival crew are leaving no stone unturned to make sure this year’s Camp Bestival is another absolute corker.

There really is something for everyone in this year’s line-up, so we’re very excited indeed to unveil a host of brilliant new acts that cover all bases, from huge popstars like our very special guest Mark Owen to brilliant local faves and beyond who will all be joining the likes of Labrinth, Richard Hawley, Levellers, Ash, The Proclaimers, Horrible Histories, Mr Tumble, Erth’s Dinosaur Zoo, Alan Davies, Dick n Dom, Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures The Brit School and many more!

The Camp Bestival Crew says: "There’s so much great music at Camp Bestival with something for everyone and we know how much fun a ladies night out is, so we’re very pleased to announce Mark Owen is coming to Lulworth Castle this year, especially for the girls!"

With his first solo album in eight years, ‘The Art of Doing Nothing’ due out in June, we very pleased to announce that Take That’s very own Mark Owen will be joining us at Lulworth Castle. With a hit-packed career spanning 20 years, Mark is one of the UKs biggest pop stars and along with his brilliant four-piece band he will be the soundtrack to a mega ladies night out on Saturday at Camp Bestival, playing not only his new and much loved solo material but also a tantalising selection of Take That anthems too!

Mark Owen Says: “Just about everybody I know with a family has told me how wonderful Camp Bestival is and said 'you've got to go!' I've got my Winnebago on order. See you there”.

But that’s not all,  as we have plenty more top live music for your delectation, including Memphis chanteuse Valerie June who has been blowing away crowds with her mixture of folk, blues, gospel, soul, Appalachian and bluegrass music and her utterly magical vocals. If you haven’t caught her live yet, we guarantee this is one not to miss. There will also be live appearances from unique solo acoustic artist Cherishport, Dorset blues behemoth Red River Hogs, scrumpy & western phenomenon Skimmity Hitchers and New Forest duo Phil & Tilley.

Joining an already legendary line-up of amazing DJs that includes Grandmaster Flash, Sasha and Andrew Weatherall (in his A Love From Outer Space guide with Sean Johnston), we are very pleased to announce that deck-wrecking duo The Nextmanare joining David Rodigan MBE’s Ram Jam line-up alongside Venum Sound and MC Wrec. Impressive literature lineup announed for Camp Bestival

The past few years at Camp Bestival have seen increasingly impressive literary line-ups, so this year we are thrilled to be announcing our biggest and best literary programme yet across the weekend of August 1st-4th at Lulworth Castle in the Guardian Literary Institute, our cerebral hotspot that caters for erudite adventures of all kinds in partnership with our good friends at the Guardian. We will be presenting an inspirational selection of over 50 speakers, authors, poets, journalists, scientists, philosophers, kids’ writers and illustrators. So join us to explore ideas, philosophise, ponder, chat to the authors and speakers, and pick up a copy of a signed book.

Rob da Bank said: “Well here we go again with another bumper crop of literary folk for Camp Bestival 2013 – delving into the brains, minds and inner recesses of many of the country’s greatest authors, poets and speakers with another bountiful mix of the well-known nestled along unsung heroes of their craft. I live my life surrounded by music and noise so the Guardian Literary Institute is always a welcome break from the hubbub of the festival and I normally learn more in 30 minutes there than in the rest of my year. See you on the sofas!”

Jo WhileyThe Guardian Literary Institute is handily situated in the Kids Garden and promises a grown-up, relaxed hang-out (with sofas!) to soak up the eclectic mix of literary delights. Our ever popular ‘How To’ series welcomes national treasure Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards to chat about recently being crowned champion of ITVs diving contest, Splash, as well as his career as the UKs first Olympic ski jumper. Next up is the fabulous Jo Whiley, one of the best loved presenters in the UK, who’ll be talking about her impressive career spanning C4, Radio 1 and now Radio 2 in ‘How to Present’. The hugely respected human rights activist Trevor Phillips OBE to speak on the topic of‘How to Handle a Riot’, and the fabulous and lovely-in-real-life Charlie Brooks, who stars as super-bitch Janine in Eastenders, will be sharing her secrets of ‘How to Play a Baddie’. while the Guardian’s chief features writerSimon Hattenstone shares the trials and tribulations of ‘How to Interview’. Mercury Award nominated folk musician Sam Lee will reveal his musical secrets in ‘How to Collect Songs’ and journalist and writer Jules Evanspromises tools to achieve the Good Life, in ‘How Philosophy Can Improve Your Life’. Royal Observatory Astronomer, Marek Kakula, teaches us ‘How to Stargaze’ and wilderness experts Rob and Leo take us back to basics in ‘How to Be Wild’.

As the UK spoken word scene goes from strength to strength, we’ve been lucky enough to bag some of the top poets in the country to share their musing, led by our one and only chief wordsmith, Scroobius Pip. He has invited recent Ted Hughes Award winner Kate Tempest and the immensely talented Polarbear to join him on his Sunday session. Each of these artists is an impressive headliner in their own right, so this is a rare triple bill not to be missed.

The fantastic Josh Idehen will also be presenting poets who perform as part of London’s ever popular Poejazzi nights, including Paul Cree and James Massiah, whilst the brilliant Mr Gee and the Chill Pill Crew will be bringing the likes of Raymond Antrobus and Adam Kammerling. Plus we’ll be showcasing breaking young talent from poetry collectives ElephantEarly Doors and Roundhouse.

Leading the author line-up are two rather special one-off events. In ‘Bestselling Women’s Hour’ we will be welcoming four of the most-loved female novelists in the UK, Adele ParksLisa JewellEmily Barr and Anna Maxtedto join us for a chat on the sofa. In our second special event, Granta, who have recently revealed their Best of Young British Novelists, will be sending down three of these acclaimed authors for a live interview and reading. Come and say hello to Joanna KavennaBen Markovits and Ross Raisin before they are propelled into the literary A List.

We’re also very happy to be welcoming back Camp Bestival stalwart and intrepid bon viveur Howard Marks, to share with us his brand new spoken word show; Scholar, Smuggler, Prisoner, Scribe.  With trademark honesty and penetrating humour, Howard will look back at four extraordinary and action packed phases of his life.

For the insightful and inquisitive, the highly regarded RSA are presenting talks exploring ideas for an enlightened society. With their distinctive brand of intelligent and inspiring talks, they’ll be bringing us a trio of intrepid thinkers and adventurers who’ll take us “around the world in weighty ways” (see what we just did there?), sharing deep insights and lessons from international uprisings to the farthest reaches of human experience. Kevin Fong (the Brian Cox of Medicine!) will be taking us on an awe-inspiring journey around the human body and Bidisha (broadcaster and campaigner) explores the potential of political protest and activism.

Plus Andrew Simms will be calling in you to ‘Cancel the Apocalypse’ in a positive talk suggesting that the only thing holding us back from a gleaming future is our imagination for solutions. Or catch Angela Clarke unearthing the darkest secrets of the world of fashion in ‘Confessions of a Fashionista’.

If you have a little bit of a competitive streak, we’ve got four fighting chances for you to exert your expertise. Lily Vanilli, one of baking’s biggest rising stars, is donning her judging hat to crown the winner of the Camp Bestival Bake-Off – a chance for you to bring your handcrafted baked treats from home, for Lily to critique. The best baker will receive family tickets for Camp Bestival 2014. Or if you are a film, TV or music buff, we have three devilishly difficult quizzes, penned by Guardian brainiacs, John HarrisSam Wollaston and Catherin Shoard, taking place each evening at dusk. Plus don’t miss the ‘Wake Up with the Guardian’ sessions each morning, where you can ease yourself into the day with an amusing live commentary of the papers and a roundup of the day ahead. Journalists Simon HattenstoneCatherine Shoard and John Harris will be your hosts, joined by some familiar festival faces.

As well as this incredible plethora of literary delights in the Guardian Literary Institute, we will also be offering a full line-up of kid’s authors and illustrators, with something for all ages. These riveting readings and author events will take place in the heart of our Dingly Dell woodland enclave, the Story Den. Gather under the canopy of trees and settle down to listen to Sam Lloyd and her Monster Mates,  Laura Dockrill’s tales of Darcy BurdockGuy Bass’s stories of Stitch Head and check out Jonny Duddle’s pirate doodles. Don’t miss these authors and many more sharing their tales and talents with the young folk of Camp Bestival in this beautiful and unique setting.

Then at night, the woods will come alive with fire and dragons, and you will be able to hear a specially written story on headphones as you explore the trail in the trees. Or gather again in the Story Den, to watch the shadow puppets dance as the storytellers bring their legends to life.

And don’t forget that you’ll be able to buy books from all the authors appearing at the festival, as well as get them signed after the talks and readings. Plus Martin Brown, illustrator of Horrible Histories, will be popping in for a very special book signing to take place at the Big Top following the Barmy Britain show Sunday.

So whether you are looking for some inspirational enlightenment, imaginary escapism, jaw-dropping spoken word, brain-crunching quiz sessions or to immerse the little ones in make-believe, we have something for everyone on our Camp Bestival literary line-up.
