Green Man Festival 2013 Review – A diverse, interesting and stunning festival. Beards – optional.

A traditionally folky affair, Green Man festival is historically known for being one of the most ethically-minded music events that takes place over summer. Priding itself on being fiercely independent, it’s a refreshing alternative to the corporate hives of pop and crowds so many festivals have unfortunately become. Now, in it’s eleventh year running, thankfully, it still maintains it’s original vision.

Starting as a one day event back in 2003, just 300 people trickled into the stunning valley at the foot of the Black Mountains. Now, it’s grown into one of the biggest and best loved festivals of the summer. Hundreds of hippies, fanatical music-lovers, bearded gents and oodles of families poured into beautiful Brecon, ready for good music and good vibes.

Green Man Festival 2013

Green Man has an atmosphere rarely found at many festivals. The people that come here arrive with an interest in listening to some great bands, discovering new music and sampling a few specialist ales. I’m confident you won’t find anyone peeing on your tent or starting fights here. Plus the number of young children around really helps curb any potentially hostile behaviour. It really is something special.

It’s also accessibly one of the best and well thought out spaces in which to host a festival I've ever had the pleasure of walking around. The effort taken to maintain sanitary conditions and ensure wheelchair access throughout the field is phenomenal and when the sun goes down at night the whole arena is framed by fairylights, making it look truly magical.

Taking place over four days, guests were spoilt for choice this year with ten entertainment areas boasting 14 stages with more than 1500 performers running from dawn until dusk.

Seriously every taste was catered for. Green Man organisers had put masses of effort in to ensure no-one was left out. Right down to the adorably named ‘Little Folk’ tent – a magical enclosure for under twelve’s.

After arriving Friday morning and hearing about Patti Smith’s electric performance the night before, I was eager to catch up, musically speaking, so pitched up at the Mountain Stage ready and waiting for Phosphorescent. Matthew Houck’s distinctive voice sounded truly overwhelming. His warm and woody vocals would’ve been heat enough had it not been gloriously sunny.

Midlake and headliners Kings of Convenience were equally as impressive, both providing a dose of bluesy-infused folk-pop. Tim Smith of Midlake enchanted the audience with his almost floaty voice making We Gathered in Spring sound elusive yet powerful.

Green Man Festival Kings of Conenience

Lo-fi, Indie-folk duo, Kings of Convenience was an interesting choice of headliner. The lads from Norway have such delicate and calming voices at times it felt like I was being transported into an almost trance-like state. However, the duo was both engaging and sweet and peppered their performance with greetings and suchlike to the audience.

Erland Oye, one half of the band, had the crowd eating out of the palm of his hand when he told us we’d, “picked the best festival to come to,” and as the music and weekend continued, I knew he was right.

Almost like the antithesis to the glorious weather the day before, on Saturday the odd rain shower was dodged by ducking into the Babbling Tongues tent.

Here, Welsh native and ex- Velvet Underground member, John Cale took part in a Q & A with Jude Rogers. Honest, fascinating and a real treat to have stumbled upon. I’m almost glad it rained.

As the afternoon drew-on, the rain dried up, the sun put her hat on. Shortly after, a rainbow appeared and framed the Mountain Stage creating an almost ethereal atmosphere.

You could almost feel the anticipation in the air, Band of Horses was performing soon and I had a feeling it was going to be good.

Better than I could’ve predicted, the set was nothing short of impressive. Knocking out hit after hit, the worthy headliners drew in an impressive crowd, easily the biggest of the weekend.

Soaring voices and stomping Americana, the festival had reached an outstanding crescendo with an excellently delivered set. Their ability to ensnare an entire audience was striking and they had everyone on their feet dancing.

Finishing with Funeral, it was a very fitting end to what was easily the best performance of the day.

Bringing the pace back down and wrapping up a wonderful weekend of music, Ben Howard was given the accolade to close the festival.

His fandom has grown massively over the past year or so and it’s clear to see why.

He exhibits such raw emotion when he sings, it really is difficult not to find his performances utterly moving. Incredible to watch, he bought the festival to a close beautifully, encapsulating the ethos of Green Man. Chilled out, good times.

Performances across the weekend were as fresh as the air that was to be found in this lush Welsh valley, with an eclectic blend of indie, psych, garage and of course folk, enjoyed by an equally diverse crowd.

Uniquely wonderful, Green Man still remains devoted to being independent, diverse and family-orientated. It is definitely worth a visit. And I’m sure you’ll find yourself returning year after year, if not for the incredible music, then for the barrels of real ale.

Professor Green to replace Rudimental at Brownstock Festival

Brownstock Festival is an independent boutique style festival held on the Brown Family's farm in Essex on the weekend of the 30th, 31st Aug and 1st Sept. The festival was due to be headlined on Saturday by Rudimental (dj). In the last few hours the festival has been informed by Rudimental's management that they will not be able to perform at this year's festival. They have released this statement:

"It is with regret that Rudimental have to cancel their forthcoming appearance at Brownstock. This is through no fault of the promoters of the event, and is due to a major US touring commitment. We are hoping to make it up to everyone in 2014"

Saturday night's headline slot will now be taken by Professor Green, one of the largest acts ever to appear at Brownstock Festival. The Brown Family have released a full statement on the situation here

Professor GreenFull line up:

Professor Green (pa), The Fratellis, Mark Ronson, Tom Odell,  Duke Dumont, The Pigeon Detectives, Benga, Delilah, Beardyman, Jaguar Skills, Devlin, Hadouken, Ron Size, King Charles, Krafty Kuts, Doorly, DJ Yoda, The Milk. Full line up here

Since hearing the news regarding Rudimental's cancellation The Brown Family have been making it their business to make sure this cancellation doesn't take anything from the festival experience and have worked to bring the 2013 festival a new Saturday night headliner.

Fresh from his appearance at Glastonbury they welcome Professor Green to the 2013 line up. He will headline Saturday at the festival on the main stage. With a back catalogue with hit singles, a double gold certified album, a Facebook and Twitter following bigger than some counties, you can rest assured he will be performing a memorable set.

Adam Brown Festival Director said: "We were obviously extremely disappointed to receive the statement from Rudimental. It was a massive shock to the team. As a small independent event fighting for the best line up possible is always a challenge, but we are so excited to have been able to replace them with such formidable name. Professor Green will be an amazing finish to Saturday, one that the whole team will make sure they don't miss."

Local artists announced for Jersey Live Festival

Opening the Main Stage on the Saturday (31st August) of the festival are London-based art pop four-piece Teddy. Formed in Jersey by Tom Falle and Eddy Bailhache, their influences include Talking Heads, Radiohead and Arcade Fire, and the outfit combine an experimental sensibility with a passion for clever pop tunes.

Meanwhile over in the JT Arena, several Jersey Live favourites return; pop-punk outfit and previous Main Stagers Brave Yesterday appear, as do UK-based ‘math-punk’ band Pirate Video Company – both of whom were booked for prestigious slots at Glastonbury Festival in 2011. Another returning act are former Junior Battle of the Bands winners Alfresco Bandits, and making their festival debuts are prog-rockersHarlequin Knights (featuring members of Velofax, The Author and Inside Job) and singer-songwriter Bob Baker, and the stage will opened on Saturday 31st August once again by the winners of the Junior Battle of the Band.

The new Folklore Stage, headlined by The Neville Staple Band and Dry the River, sees Jerriaise pop-folk band Badlabeques bring their uptempo and updated traditional Jersey-French songs to kick off proceedings on the Saturday, whilst local cult heroes, the always entertaining (and never without tongue firmly in cheek) Sergeant Pipon’s Lonely Hearts Club Band finally make their long-overdue debut Jersey Live appearance.

The Hospitality Stage, whose lineup features a number of exclusive live, DJ and standup comedy and spoken word sets, is opened by singer-songwriter Laura Butlin (Saturday 31st August) and last year’s Spring Spectacular winner and Main Stage opener, the super-talented fourteen year-old Monty Taft opening the Sunday bill.

Finally, the Full Flow Locale Dance Tent, curated by local DJ Griff, returns to showcase the best of Jersey’s DJ talent. A relatively recent addition to Jersey Live, making its first appearance at the festival in 2010, the tent is now a staple part of the festival, and this year’s highlights include sets from dubsteppers Schema, Hip Hop/funk/breaks duo Fuzzbox Inc and Jersey Live co-founder Warren Le Sueur, as well as numerous other DJs spanning electronic genres from drum & bass to techno and everything inbetween.

Set in the lush countryside surrounds of the Parish of Trinity, Jersey Live is the UK’s southernmost festival and with more sunshine than any other part of the British Isles, and one of the warmest, friendliest festival audiences you could hope to encounter, it’s the perfect festival destination.

Keep your eyes peeled for more line up announcements across the seven stages, to be made in the coming weeks! For more information, please visit www.jerseylive.org.uk

Co-organiser Warren Holt:
“We’ve always felt it’s important to showcase local artists at Jersey Live, not simply to give them a leg up but because there are genuine musical talents on this small nine-by-five rock of ours who deserve the opportunity to perform alongside established international acts. There are some great returning acts like Pirate Video Company and Monty Taft, as well as some new bands that haven’t performed here before. I think anyone who’s seen Sergeant Pipon in action before will be putting an immediate circle around their name on the line up! We’re very nearly done with the line up, and will be announcing the last few names in the next couple of weeks. Stay tuned!”

Tamara O’Brien, Head of Marketing & Brand at JT:
“Promoting home grown talent is an idea very close to our hearts at JT, and we are delighted that some very talented local performers are going to have the opportunity of playing at Jersey Live at the JT Arena. We are proud to be supporting this fantastic community event and just like everyone else, we can’t wait for it to begin.”
