Minchin takes to the 'Great Oak Stage' following his headlining stint as Judas Iscariot in the sell out arena tour of Jesus Christ Superstar and off the back of the huge Broadway and West End success of his multi award winning musical Matilda – which scooped a record breaking 7 Olivier Awards. Going back to his day job of stand up musical comedy, this will be his first time performing in the historic Royal Park.
Having released six CDs, three DVDs and performed sell-out international live shows, Tim Minchin has also become a fixture on TV and radio in his native Australia, here in the UK and even guest starring in the US drama Californication. His legions of fans from comedy, drama and musicals will have the opportunity to see him perform his full show live on 10th July in Hyde Park.
Tim will be performing on the main stage, so bring along your picnic blankets and chairs and claim your spot on the grass in London’s Hyde Park. If you’d rather though, there will also be unreserved seating in the Grandstand area for an evening of the best outdoor comedy entertainment offered anywhere in London.
Joining Tim will be the cream of UK comedy talent:
Milton Jones is the king of the one-liners, a regular on BBC Radio 4 and TV’s Mock The Week where his quick fire humour gives audiences several laughs a minute. This summer he's in between national tours with some classics and plenty of brand new one-liners. Clever and stupid. No, mainly stupid. "No-one can touch Jones when he hits his stride" The Guardian. "He's fast, absurd and very funny" Radio Times
Newly crowned ‘Queen Of Comedy’ at the British Comedy Awards 2014, ventriloquist extraordinaire Nina Conti will be unpacking her suitcase of friends as she brings her puppet sidekicks to Hyde Park. White-haired Scottish Granny, the cynical monkey, Monk and of course the hilarious face-mask that lets Nina interact with terrified members of the audience!
Since playing Jonathan Creek in the late 90’s, Alan Davies has become a star of both television and screen, an actor and comedian whose laconic style is as at home in comedy clubs as on TV panel shows. A regular team captain on BBC2’s QI, playing Stephen Fry’s loveable sidekick, catch him perform this one-off show, before he heads out on a UK tour later this year.
Gina Yashere is the outspoken Londoner who the Guardian has called “one of the best comics in the world” and the first Briton to appear on the Def Comedy Jam in the US. Gina won both 'Best International Comedian' and 'Best Comedy DVD' at the Black Comedy Awards in 2014.
Holding the whole show together is one of the most popular British comedians ever. Jasper Carrott is famous the world over for his hilarious observational comedy, one man TV shows and global tours, not to mention his chart success with the spoof hit ‘Funky Moped’. He has received the Lifetime Achievement accolade from the British Comedy Awards and this is a rare chance to see him live in action.
The festival season is now well and truly under way and for me, Cheltenham’s Wychwood Festival – now in it’s 10th year – would be my first taste of what this year has to offer.
This child friendly festival, self proclaimed to be ‘a truly wonderful thing’ certainly did not disappoint. It had everything I love to see at these type of events – the weird and wonderful hit me from the word go; stepping out of the car to be greeted by a group of cub scouts, complementing their neckerchiefs with pink cowboy hats. I followed the smell of barbecued burgers into the main site and the little pangs of excitement I get around this time of year had begun.
The ‘big top’ tent seemed to be where Wychwood had scheduled the more underground acts of this years festival. The first act I saw in this tent were an electronic outfit from Manchester called ‘No Ceremony’. A 3 piece band I would love to experience again. From ambient guitar washes to four-to-the-floor AKAI sampler breaks in an instant, they were a great band to ease yourself into this festival and to show the crowds that the ‘big top’ tent was the place to be. I later went on to watch the amazing Bipolar Sunshine on the same stage. A band who would be at Parklife festival next weekend, to give me a second helping of after summer tune after summer tune.
The big top was also the venue for my stand out highlight of this entire festival – Wolf Alice. They were mesmerising from start to finish – with lead singer Ellie Rowsell’s unique vocals haunting you to the bone one minute, before hitting you right between the eyes the next.
The first headline band of the weekend was The Stranglers. They took to the stage, each member dressed entirely in black and I had all sorts of comments running through my head – things like them being ‘shadows of what they used to be’ and all that rubbish, but they soon blew all of my ignorant negativity out of the water. Smashing out hits like ‘Golden Brown’ and ‘Peaches’ it was great to see them genuinely still loving every minute of doing so, even after being together all of these years.
Some of the big names on Saturday’s bill I found a little disappointing. It may have just been in comparison to the mind blowing Newton Faulkner and his unexplainable rhythmic guitar magic but Reef, a band who I listened to a lot in my teenage years (and genuinely really like) just didn’t seem comfortable amongst the somewhat tamer bands on this years bill. I’m sure in a different setting, seeing them blasting out ‘place your hands’ and ‘naked’ would have had me bouncing around like I was 16 again, but not here surrounded by a crowd predominantly sporting headline band ‘Levellers’ t-shirts. When they finally took to the stage, the ex-glastonbury-main-stagers worked through their back catalogue with songs such as ‘One Way’ with their signature folk/punk rock influenced stylings.
The final headline band on Sunday was Bob Geldof’s own Boomtown Rats. They took to the stage with an energy from way before their current years, with Geldof commanding the crowd like it was second nature to him. They sounded fantastic, belting out ‘I don’t like mondays’ right in the middle of their 16 song set list, which came to a head with their self titled ‘Boomtown Rats’ to bring this fun-filled family festival to an end.
It was slightly strange filtering out on the Sunday night, amongst crowds of tired toddlers and drunk mums but I had really enjoyed my weekend at this quirky little festival in Cheltenham. Now to wash down those wellies ready for Festival number 2 next weekend ;)
Camden’s notoriously idolised for its music scene, the generation of Amy’s, Pete’s Carls and Noels may be behind us, but there’s still enough to of the icon to put on an incredible line up. Located at some of London’s cult venues-Proud, Electric Ball Room and The worlds End, this was sure to be a festive hit with locals and tourists alike.
With an eclectic and heavy mix of bands, from 00s Indie Hero’s Johnny Borrell and Get Cape Wear Cape Fly, to the heavier Black Out and incredible turbo wolf.
Stand Out performances came in the form of new kids on the block The Struts with an incredible set at Proud, with glamour and swagger oozing into the crowd.
The Black Out came out to a full crowd at Underground sending a never-ending buzz into the streets outside and turbo wolf blended 70s grit with heavy guitars to creatry a heady-gritty set.
Headline sets came from the Subways who seem to always be on top form, sending the full-to-capacity crowd into frantic moves with their huge back catalogue of hits.
The only downer was the festival didn’t feel new, nothing shouted out as being exciting as far as atmosphere went, but maybe that’s just because its Camden. Maybe it needs no Gimmicks, Camden at the end of the day is Camden, and Camden Rocks does exactly what it says on the tin.

Produced by video game super fan Orvar Saftrom and played by The Philharmonia Orchestra and Swedish soprano Sabina Zweiacker, the SCORE concert will journey through gaming history, awakening well-loved music from classics such as Super Mario, Sonic The Hedgehog and Commodore 64 right through to Killzone, Final Fantasy and Skyrim.
With the arrival of next generation gaming and Grand Theft Auto V last year becoming the fastest-selling entertainment product in history, there is no doubt that the gaming industry is rising to new-found heights. Producing releases that continually push the boundaries of our expectations, developers are creating games to rival hollywood blockbusters and while games may look different to how they did in the 80s, the music still plays a major part in the gaming experience.
SCORE celebrates the music of some of the most well known video games ever made and over the years has become one of the leading game music productions in the world. Orchestival will be the first ever SCORE concert in the UK and will be a rare opportunity to hear music normally confined to the console played live by The Philharmonia Orchestra, a full symphony orchestra responsible for recording Hollywood blockbuster music for films such as Thor 2, Iron Man 3 and Elysium.
For the concert the retro 8-bit sounds of Commodore 64 and the 16-bit music of Sonic The Hedgehog have been reworked and given a new lease of life thanks to the extraordinary talents of the SCORE team. Nintendo fans will also be treated to two large suites featuring themes from the Super Mario and The Legend Of Zelda series, while Final Fantasy lovers will hear well loved music by celebrated composer Nobuo Uematsu. Incredible compositions from more recent titleswill be fully realised such as the fiery pirate music of Assassin's Creed IV – Black Flag, the eerie jazz and blues of 1940s America in L.A. Noire and the haunting vocal piece "The Dragonborn Comes" from hit game Skyrim.
Joris de Man, the Dutch soundtrack composer of the critically acclaimed Killzone, will be giving an inspiring talk on the importance of sound design in video games in the Talk tent just before the SCORE concert and performance of his music. Joris de Man is widely respected in the classical and gaming worlds and in 2010 won the first ever Ivor Novello Award for a video game soundtrack, for his work on Killzone 2.
Speaking about the SCORE concert Joris said: "There’s no doubt that games music is now a big part of the classical stage. ClassicFM is regularly playing soundtracks from the gaming arena, and at last Orchestival is bringing the sounds of the console to Britain’s festival scene. What’s really exciting is that game-music concert audiences are not just gamers and geeks. Many have been captivated by games and want to hear the music outside of the gaming experience, others have never played a game in their life but love the music being created."
The Ivor Novello winner is also very excited to hear his own music played live: "There’s something very special about hearing my compositions on a stage with live performers, especially if it’s been re-orchestrated as my work often needs to be. I hear things that I don’t always hear in-game or in the recordings."
SCORE is another feature of Orchestival's ground breaking programme that will expand and evolve all expectations of classical music. The Philharmonia Orchestra set the standard as the festival's resident orchestra for the weekend, which will see performances and collaborations by Squarepusher, The Unthanks, British Paraorchestra, Goldfrapp producer and keyboardist Will Gregory and many more.
Orchestival was founded by Charles Hazlewood, one of the most prominent figures in the classical world. A true pioneer, Charles has made it his goal to bring the genre to a wider audience and Orchestival will take him one step closer.
