Truck Festival announce Graham Coxon, The Go! Team and more

Hosting on Friday will be Transgressive Records. Label co-founder and director Toby L: “Transgressive has a rich history with Truck. An independent event with true distinction and personality, the line-ups are always brave and innovative. Hosting the second stage is a great opportunity for us to introduce a slew of new signings from our roster (for instance, the entrancing Mechanical Bride, the solo auteur Marques Toliver, fast rising Dry the River and punk all-girl choir Gaggle), as well as celebrate with a couple of older, more familiar names (our headliners Graham Coxon and Johnny Flynn). We look forward to spending the weekend with you all.”

Saint Etienne (previously announced) will headline the Heavenly Recordings programme on the Saturday. We welcome as special guest the inspirational Orange Juice singer, solo artist and survivor Edwyn Collins, alongside Cherry Ghost, Sea of Bees, Trevor Moss & Hannah-Lou, The Rockingbirds and James Walbourne.Saturday on the Clash Stage will take on a celebratory feel as Heavenly mark a special moment, as label founder and boss Jeff Barrett explains: “Heavenly Recordings can think of no better place to celebrate it’s twenty first birthday than at the ever wonderful Truck festival.” Good job there are late night DJ sets lined up from Justin Robertson and Richard Norris (Beyond the Wizard’s Sleeve) to keep the birthday shindig going into the early hours.

Sunday’s hosts will be Bella Union. Simon, Mark, Luke and Anika at the label sum up why they’re joining the Truck family this July: “Bella Union has never been into expansion and empire building just for the sake of it, we love to keep things small and manageable. And yet we love to branch out and spread the love far and wide. Curating stages at festivals and starting the radio show have been recent developments and working with the fine folks at Truck, putting together such a wonderful line-up for the Sunday has been a real treat.” Previously announced John Grantwill headline Bella Union’s bill, alongside Oxford music legend Philip Selway of Radiohead, performing material from his warmly-received solo record. Dean Wareham (playing the songs of his legendary band Galaxie 500) joins us from New York, and Alessi’s Ark, Treefight for Sunlight, Lanterns on the Lake and Cashier No9complete this specially curated day.

Truck 14 is shaping up to be something truly special, defined by the personal touches, unique collaborations and the independent spirit that has always been the calling card of this much-loved festival. Festival organiser Robin Bennett gives an insight into this year’s plans:

“At Truck we’ve always been inspired by the best independent labels, whether Creation Records taking on the mainstream, the wackiness of Apple Records, or the DIY spirit of Chemikal Underground. We have the utmost respect for those which survive and thrive while putting out great and interesting music; this year we decided to introduce a major new stage at the festival and thought, why not get some of the best current independent labels to programme a day of acts each? So we’re welcoming Transgressive, Heavenly and Bella Union to do just that. They are all great labels because they have great people behind them, tight gangs who are passionate about keeping the flame of original music alive in our present X-Glee-Pop-Factor world (just as we at Truck try to keep the corporate-blandification of festivals at bay and present a real alternative for music-lovers hungry for the genuine article).

They’re bringing with them amazing artists and all-time greats like Edwyn Collins, Philip Selway and Graham Coxon; when we were waking the neighbours with our teenage-garage-band versions of Blur and Radiohead numbers, Joe and I didn’t imagine that members of said bands would be taking to the stage in our home village a few years later. Truck Festival, like us, has come a long way. Bring it home!”

And the news doesn’t stop there today, the stellar line-up on the Truck Stage also continues to grow with the following additions:

Sonic adventurists The Go! Team, Tunng and country royalty Justin Townes Earle take to the Truck Stage on Sunday before the Truck Festival All-Stars, a specially-assembled cast lead by Robin and Joe, close the festival weekend with a grand Last Waltz-style finale. Previous Truck headliner with Idlewild, Roddy Woomble will roll into Steventon on Saturday to play the main stage alongside Two Fingers of Firewater while Admiral Fallow and Pete Molinari continue the Friday feeling of the best roots and alternative country on the Truck Stage.

Weekend tickets for Truck are still less than £100, taking the prize for the best value mini-holiday music lovers could wish for in 2011. Cabaret, comedy, theatre, cinema, a dedicated Family Field, luxury camping options and the legendary after-dark party spot Boxford all add up to make Truck Festival a truly special destination this July.

South West Four Arena Host’s announced

In 2011 we have accumulated our strongest arena hosts to date, all dedicated to showcasing the world’s greatest DJs and live electronic acts. How does one of the planet’s biggest records labels sound? Or how about two of Ibiza’s most legendary club nights? Here goes…

COCOON
Sven Vath’s legendary Cocoon label is the leading techno imprint on the planet. Since its creation in 2000, the label has thrown some of the most mind blowing parties club land has ever witnessed. This includes huge events the world over, astounding nights at the label’s own venue in Frankfurt and that’s all before we get to the antics that take place every Monday evening on a certain White Isle… Without doubt Ibiza’s biggest night, Cocoon at Amnesia has seen Pappa Sven and his cohorts change the electronic landscape and help bring techno to the masses. As part of the global tour for their much anticipated second artist album, worldwide trance sensation and SW4 favourites Above & Beyond will be hosting a number of ‘Group Therapy’ stages at the biggest dance festivals in Europe this summer. Handpicking their favourite DJs and artists, Above & Beyond will also be playing extended sets at each event – showcasing the cutting-edge sounds of their ‘Group Therapy’ album. This includes Dance Valley, Tomorrowlands, Global Gathering and as the final piece to the puzzle at South West Four. Arguably London’s finest underground house night, SW4 is delighted to welcome back Shake It! In 2009 the club night debuted on the Common, with residents Layo & Bushwacka! starring alongside Richie Hawtin, Steve Lawler, Timo Maas and Dubfire. Since then Shake It! has continued to host a succession of sell out parties which have taken London’s most discerning clubbers to the most impressive spaces imaginable. Attracting names such as Carl Cox and Laurent Garnier, Shake It! has become an institution in a very short space of time. Together returns to Clapham Common this August after its unforgettable arena at last year’s South West Four. In 2010 Together welcomed an incredible selection of acts to the festival including Skream & Benga, Andy C, Jack Beats and Caspa. Since then the night has gone onto host a mammoth New Years Eve at the O2 Academy Brixton with Mark Ronson, Annie Mac, Katy B, Fake Blood, Hervé and Zinc. DRUMCODE
One of the most respected and seminal record labels in the industry, it is a great honour that Adam Beyer has chosen South West Four to host the next instalment of Drumcode in the capital. In 2010 the label took over the Ewer Street Car Park in London for a massive sell out event and a lineup featuring the likes of Chris Liebing, Paul Ritch, Cari Lekebusch, Alan Fitzpatrick and Beyer himself. The label’s uncompromising musical vision has also been welcomed across the four corners of the globe with the label’s annual pilgrimage to the Berghain in Berlin now part of techno folklore. With demand for Drumcode’s return to the Capital at an all time high, we’re delighted to welcome the underground heavyweight to South West Four for the label’s only London festival appearance this year.

The core pairing of Ian McCulloch and Will Sergeant have been Echo & the Bunnymen – through split ups and other members disappearing – since 1978. The Liverpudlians produced consecutive classics of flowing, highly melodic searing post-punk from debut ‘Crocodiles’ to their self titled fifth album. ‘The Cutter’ was a top 10 single and has become a confirmed classic of the era, along with their 1987 hit ‘The Killing Moon’. After a split in 1993, they returned with ‘Evergreen’, and proved they’d lost none of their sublime qualities. 2009’s ‘The Fountain’ marked their eleventh studio release, and this staying power has ensured a huge and unwavering fan base. With a wealth of excellent songs to dip into, watching the Echo & the Bunnymen festival performance will be an essential moment of the weekend.

the cribsFrom the early beginnings for the Jarman brothers working in a factory in Wakefield, to touring the world and a Top 10 album, 2009’s ‘Ignore The Ignorant’, The Cribs are masters of addictive, wiry indie pop suss. In a career spanning almost 10 years the Yorkshire men – together with now full time member Johnny Marr – have produced passionate anti-hipster anthems including ‘Our Bovine Public’, ‘Mirror Kissers’ and ‘Hey Scenesters!’. Last year they released the single, ‘Housewife’ which was a great taster of the new material that’s due out later this year. You can hear these new tracks when they play Latitude in what will be a raucous, jump-out fun-filled festival set to remember!

American singer-songwriter Lyle Lovett began his career writing songs for others but by 1986 he had released his self-titled debut album, which contained three Billboard Top 20 singles. His country style has ensnared four Grammy Awards from Best Country Male Vocal in 1989 for ‘Lyle Lovett and His Large Band’ and Best Country Album for 1996’s ‘The Road To Ensenada’. His songs have appeared, sometimes with different vocalists, in films as varied as ‘The Crying Game’ and ‘Toy Story’ and even in recent US vampire drama ‘True Blood’. These tunes have been woven into the fabric of US culture to the point where you’ve probably heard more Lyle Lovett songs than you realise. Check out his distinctive Americana at Latitude this year.

The Raghu Dixit Project is one of India’s foremost bands in its genre. Ethnic and rooted at the core, but at the same time, global in its outlook. It’s not a surprise that Raghu has been referred to as India’s biggest cultural export of recent times. Recently nominated for Songlines’ Best Newcomer of the Year, Raghu Dixit has had an unexpectedly rich musical career. From initial fumbling with the guitar to impress girls, he ended up playing in indie and rock bands – notably Antaragni – in Bangalore before writing radio jingles for money. He was initially rejected by the Bollywood-dominated music industry in his home country before being recognised by composers Vishal and Shekhar as having a unique talent. His debut album quickly became the best selling non-Bollywood record in India two years ago. Raghu has played several festivals in the UK and has toured several continents. His band’s eclectic blend of traditional and modern music – covering both western and eastern ideas and sounds – has resulted in hugely appreciative audiences, worldwide record deals and now a spot on the diverse and exceptional Latitude line-up.

Also playing in the Music Arenas over the weekend is a fantastic mix of burgeoning acts and household names including: Queen of Rockabilly Wanda Jackson, Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan, Edwyn Collins, Bright Eyes, Anna Calvi, Hurts, Deerhunter, Bellowhead, The Vaccines and Everything Everything to name just a few.
Elsewhere throughout the weekend, festival goers can enjoy readings from leading poets and authors including Linton Kwesi Johnson, Esther Freud, Jo Shapcott, Simon Armitage, Sarah Dunant, Dave Gorman and Alexei Sayle; top comics Alan Carr, Omid Djalili, Jason Byrne and a festival debut of Never Mind The Buzzcocks; exciting theatre and dance productions presented by The Gate, Bush Theatre, Sadler’s Wells and English National Ballet to name but a few, cabaret performances from David Schneider & Friends, Will Adamsdale, Bourgeois and Maurice; and BAFTA return to the Film & Music Arena with a fantastic programme of Q&A’s, discussions and workshops including comedy stars Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon discussing their hilarious work on Michael Winterbottom’s ‘The Trip’.

Cheeky chaps The View will bring their own crowd-pleasing take on indie-pop to Brighton, playing future hits, and tried and tested favourites. Two of Austin, Texas’ finest exports join the bill. First up Okkervil River will be taking us on their journey from ear candy to veiled audio violence, to the sea, up to the highest mountains and back again. Also playing are White Denim whose punk-infused, psychedelic blues-rock never fails to deliver live. Black Devil Disco Club were discovered by Aphex Twin and The Chemical Brothers some 30 years after the release of his first tracks. The legendary crooner of space disco is finally back with a new album and brings it to Brighton…Beardyman needs little introduction having compared many a festival these past couple of years. His unique vocal dexterity winning him fans around the world. Expect man-made re-rubs, re-edits, and layer upon layer of cheeky aural wizardry. Anna Calvi is one of the names on the tip of everyone’s tongue to break through in 2011. Seeing her brand of big, challenging pop songs is sure to be one of the hottest shows at The Great Escape. The Black Lungs is a side project of Alexisonfire guitarist, Wade MacNeil. Wade is the lead singer of this band, reminiscent of his first punk rock band Plan 9. Dirty but as addictive as Marlborough Reds, these St Catherine’s residents will be flying the Canadian flag in Brighton. London trio Factory Floor are raw, chaotic, fantastic and different. Everything you could want from a new band. Critics and the public alike have been flocking to their industrialized and synthesized live shows. Watch it go off. Grouplove are favorites of the NME, and their take on California is as forward thinking as it is inspired by the classic harmony groups of yesteryear. Packed to the rafters with energy and good vibes, they are set to bring some proper sunshine to Brighton beach! Once again proving that artists get deals off the back of The Great Escape, King Charles has, since his incendiary performance at last year’s event, been snapped up by Universal in the states, and has been recording his debut album in LA. His unabashed twist on colonialist folk has to be seen to be believed. Glassjaw to play Reading and Leeds Festival 2011

glassjawOne of the most innovative bands of our times, the Grammy nominated New Yorkers have often been cited as a key influence in the post-hardcore genre. After the release of their debut EP ‘Kiss Kiss Bang Bang’ in 1997, the first full length album ‘Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Silence’ followed in 2000 and brought the band out of Long Island and into the hands of a dedicated grass roots following. After almost a decade of silence, the band released ‘Our Color Green (The Singles)’ on New Year’s Day and the five-track EP should serve as a reminder that Glassjaw are as essential as ever.

Glassjaw join previously announced headline acts Muse, My Chemical Romance, The Strokes and Pulp on this year’s line-up and will perform on the NME / Radio 1 Stage on Saturday 27th August in Reading, and Sunday 28th August in Leeds. Joining the bill for all three dates, New York based We Are Scientists are renowned for their spontaneous and electric live show, alloying post punk attitude with dance beats and incessant hooks. Playing a set that will span their four acclaimed albums, We Are Scientists are one of the most charismatic bands around with core members Keith Murray and Chris Cain’s ability to rock any crowd marking them out as ones not to miss this May Bank Holiday weekend.

Kaiser Chiefs return to Isle of Wight Festival 2011

Five individuals with three hugely successful albums under their belts; Kaiser Chiefs are back! Performing ahead of Kings of Leon on Friday 10th June, the band is the perfect addition to one of the hottest weekends of the summer.

Taking place from Friday 10th – Sunday 12th June, the Isle of Wight Festival will celebrate its 10th anniversary in style. Over three days, festivalgoers are in for an unmissable weekend of music from artists including; Kings of Leon, Foo Fighters, Kasabian, Pulp, Plan B, Public Image Ltd, Beady Eye, Iggy and the Stooges, The Vaccines plus many, many more.

This year, the Garden Stage will see Tim Burgess & Mark Collins from The Charlatans- Acoustic Set, Andrea Corr, Ian Brodie, Tom McRae, Roachford, Yellowire, Ben Montague, James Walsh, It’s A Beautiful Day, Julie Felix, Scarlette Fever , Pronghorn, Joe Janiak, Bethia Beadman, Soul Circus, The Scarletz, Stereo Son, Bibelots, Charley Macaulay, Will and the People, The Bonfires, The Arcadian Kicks and Truly Violet showcase unique, stripped back and intimate performances of their chart topping songs.

Unfortunately Tinie Tempah won’t be joining us at the Festival this year. Tinie Tempah commented: ‘Huge apologies to my fans, due to conflicting schedule demands I sadly won’t be able to play this year’s Isle of Wight Festival but look forward to another opportunity in the future.’

 

Jamiroquai, House of Pain, Kreator and more for Exit Festival 2011

jamiroquaiExit Festival are delighted to announce British acid jazz funk supremo Jamiroquai to play the Main Stage. The band needs little introduction, having sold over 25million albums worldwide, a Grammy Award in 1997, released seven albums, half of those reaching the #1 coveted spot, 13 Brit Awards nominations and with the best hat collection in the world, Jamiroquai – acclaimed, era-defying and one of the greatest live bands around – are back. The blistering, poetic, meaty, reflective and inspiring new album ‘Rock Dust Light Star’ is the result of two years work and clearly emphasises a new lease of life in Jay Kay and his band of time-served musician-teammates. This will be a truly electric performance.

Also performing on the Main Stage are House of Pain who celebrate their 20th anniversary, having changed the face of hip-hop with their self titled debut album, going multi-platinum and launching one of the most memorable songs in hip-hop history ‘Jump Around’, it’s the start of a new decade. They will be bringing their fiery live show and reclaiming the throne as hip-hop’s best and celebrating what has allowed their successes over the past 20 year – the fans.

Exit has 20 stages and for metal fans, the Explosive stage plays host to one of the most prominent European thrash metal band, Kreator. For almost thirty years now, Kreator has been holding a high position in thrash metal scene, sharing it with such bands as Slayer, Metallica and Megadeath. With as many as twelve studio albums, the uncompromising front man Mille Petrozza is the most die-hard metal fans icon, stout-heartedly points his finger to the problems in society, addressing political injustices old-root metal style. The Fusion stage adds Go Back to the Zoo aka GBTTZ who are an indie pop rock outfit hailing from The Netherlands most recognizable from their single ‘Beam Me Up’ that was used by Nike for a worldwide ad campaign. Since then the band have released their debut album ‘Benny Bisto’ and are set to play the Fusion stage with boundless energy and quirky Dutch humour no doubt. Definitely a band to keep an eye on.

2011 will also see pre and post EXIT events happening in the city of Novi Sad and Belgrade, so festival go-ers can spend longer in Serbia experiencing the warmth of the Serbian people whilst having fun and seeing new sights and cities. It’s an adventure and festival in one! No mud and lots of wonderful experiences, it’s a golden ticket for summer 2011.

BBC Radio 1 Big Weekend Lineup revealed

American rock band Foo Fighters have been confirmed as the headline act for the Main foo fightersStage on Saturday 14 May. They will be joined that day by The Black Eyed Peas, Tinie Tempah, Chase & Status, Plan B, Ellie Goulding, Jessie J and Nicole Scherzinger.
 
The headline act for Sunday 15 May is Lady Gaga. The acts already confirmed for the Main Stage that day are My Chemical Romance, Bruno Mars, The Script, Katy B, Professor Green, The Wombats, Taio Cruz and Olly Murs.
 
black eyed peasThe news was announced by Scott Mills this morning (currently deputising for Chris Moyles) as he broadcast his Radio 1 show live from Trinity School in Carlisle. He was joined by British singer Katy B who performed in front of the school’s pupils.
 
Radio 1’s Big Weekend is the UK’s biggest free ticketed festival and 40,000 lucky music fans will be able to enjoy performances across four stages at Carlisle Airfield where the event is taking place – the Main Stage; the In New Music We Trust Stage; the Outdoor Stage and the BBC Introducing Stage – with the majority of the free tickets going to the residents of Carlisle and the surrounding area.

Tickets for Radio 1’s Big Weekend are free and registration opens on Thursday 31 March at 8.15am and closes at 7pm on Thursday 7 April at bbc.co.uk/radio1.

Radio 1 also revealed that it is to embark on its most ambitious social action campaign around Radio 1’s Big Weekend to date, getting well and truly into the heart of the community via a major volunteering initiative. Last year Radio 1 gave students in Bangor the opportunity to earn themselves tickets to the event by taking part in cleaning beaches in North Wales and this year’s campaign will be even bigger and better, getting even more local residents involved in a number of projects in the area.
 
A truly multiplatform experience, Radio 1’s Big Weekend will be broadcast on Radio 1, with a major interactive presence online and many live performances available to watch on demand. There will be highlights on BBC Three and extended performances can be seen viaBBC Red Button on digital TV during the weekend.
 
Throughout the weekend of the event, Radio 1 DJs including Chris Moyles, Fearne Cotton, Greg James, Scott Mills, Zane Lowe, Huw Stephens, Vernon Kay, Reggie Yates, Edith Bowman, Annie Mac and Nick Grimshaw will be introducing the artists on stage and broadcasting from the event.
