Legends Arrested Development and more set for Boomtown Festival

Reggae’s soul master Toots and the Maytals, one of reggae’s most prolific singer/songwriters Richie Spice, international reggae sensation Collie Buddz and the Kingston Band. As well as Foreign Beggars,Redlight, Chinese Man (Live), Dub Inc., Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, Gentleman’s Dub Club and so much more…

With the Fair officially splitting up into several different districts this year, the expanse of musical genres nicely reflects the various personalities for each area and unique stage. First up, let take a trip through the ska, swing, folk and punk line-ups:

It is with enormous excitement that BoomTown welcomes the Parov Stelar Band; for those who are unfamiliar with this Austrian DJ, turned uber producer’s work, he has stealthily been taking over the global music scene in recent years with his inspired styles and samples from the most varying of genres (soul, pop, jazz and swing) creating an incomparable and peerless sound. The full band are known for their lively and exuberant live shows and right up OldTown’s street! Next up for the Town Centre Stage is Grammy award winning musical alchemists Ozomatli. This super group from LA effortlessly fuse Latin salsa, urban hip-hop and jazz-funk into their signature sound, which, when seen live emits a rich energy that will perk up even the weariest feet… Another signature sound for BoomTown will come at the hands of the ska heavyweights – Mad Caddies, these stalwarts of ska have been knocking around pleasing ska hungry crowds all over the world for nearly two decades and now it’s BoomTown’s turn!

This first round of artists includes, not one, but TWO Grammy award winners, the second of which are sunshine reggae and positive afro-centric political pioneer’s Arrested Development. With their mega hits ‘Tennessee’, ‘Mr Wendal’ and ‘People Everyday’, they host a back catalogue that defined the sound of a generation, BoomTown will once more be a city filled with smiley faces and overwhelming happiness when this legendary group take to the stage!

Being the friendly bunch that they are at BoomTown, they do like to welcome back some familiar faces and honorary BoomTown residents, this year sees the very welcome return of some of the cream of the crop from BoomTowns’ gone by, including: 2011 headliners and reggae royalty Toots and the Maytals, rocksteady rambunctiousness from The Neville Staple Band (The Specials) as well asThe Selecter and the super saucy Molotov Jukebox. Along with BoomTown regulars, The Skints, Babyhead, Ska Cubano, Random Hand and a selection of awesome newcomers; Demented Are Go, Orkestra Del Sol,  Hoffmaestro, Les Hurlements D' Leo, Suicide Bid, The Creepshow and Flap!

Whilst over on the Reggae, dub and jungle stages the first couple of headliners for this year include: one of Jamaica’s leading dancehall stars Richie Spice and one of the most buzz-worthy Reggae artists over the past few years Collie Buddz and the New Kingston Band. Also to be found in the reggae, dub and jungle stages are: Dub Inc., Lee 'Scratch' Perry, Million Stylez, Gentleman's Dub Club, Necessary Mayhem Showcase feat. Tippa Irie & Mr Williamz, Mungo's Hi Fi,  Musical Youth, Iration Steppas meets Channel One in a Dubwise Fashion, Robbo Ranx (BBC Radio 1xtra), Prince Fatty + Horseman, I-Fire, Dreadsquad feat Dr Ring Ding + Kasia Malenda + El Fata, Marcus Visionary, Buggsy (full live band), David Boomah Feat. Only Joe

And finally for the break and bass stages BoomTown presents… the trailblazing electronic crossover act Foreign Beggars, Bristol based DJ and producer Redlight, the bad ass, old skool hip-hop meets baile funk sounds of the formidable Chinese Man (live), dubstep pioneers Digital Mystikz, Koan Sound, Calyx & Teebee, DJ Zinc, South Central Live, LTJ Bukem & MC Conrad, Opiuo, B.Triats, Mak & Pasteman, Reso, Rack n Ruin, Woz (Black Butter Special)

Sticky, Randomer and Slipmatt b2b Billy Bunter.

Ski Lift to be installed at Boomtown Fair Festival

A travelator of epic proportions, this easy access, fun ride will grant even the weariest of BoomTown legs access to the whole site ensuring that all the adventures the Aladdin’s cave of BoomTown has to offer are a mere hop, skip and a magic carpet ride away… Also new for BoomTown 2013 will be the unveiling of the epic 15 metre high Lion’s Den Mayan temple, the sizzling streets of the brand new Barrio Loco and the Arcadia Spider moving even further into the depths of the DownTown district…

Never ones to keep the sky as the limit, BoomTown Fair will this year play host to a gargantuan 300ft moving carpet ride to escort rambling residents up the, often fearful gradient, of the affectionately known ‘hippy highway’. Due to the increase in the number of districts and big changes to the city’s layout, with the Lion’s Den, Oldtown, The Town Centre and Mayfair Avenue moving out of the bowl and up to the top, the ever caring Town Mayor plans to introduce a flying carpet for residents and tourists alike to take the strain off their dancing shoes and soak up the breathtaking vista of the BoomTown’s cityscape. Boomers can purchase a weekend pass for a mere £10+bf to use this easy-breezy form of transportation, ensuring that the important energy is saved for sampling all the serious fun BoomTown has to offer! Tickets are limited so be sure to get a ticket now to make achy legs a thing of the past, and BoomTown teleportation the way of the future!

Another mystical treat for the BoomTown faithful this year is the discovery of the mega Mayan temple, known as the Lion’s Den. For the past few years the worshipers of the Lion’s Den, the reggae capital of BoomTown, have been skanking it out in a cosy, beat-a-licious, tent temple, but now reggae fans across this land can worship their reggae gods in a temple fitting for their Rastafarian rulers! The recent unearthing of gigantic temple has meant that the Lion’s Den sunshine tunes and daylight dancing can be moved to its rightful home amongst the great and the good of roots reggae culture! For the full video of the unbelievable unearthing of such an ancient discovery head to BoomTown Discovery Channel here

With the recent announcement of the city split and the confirmation of the new permanent residential districts of BoomTown, some inter tensions have arisen: The Mexican mariachi’s of El Barrio Loco are staking claim to being THE new party hotspot in town… with the influx of ‘Ciro Baile’s’ explosive and energetic circus mixed with back to back fiestas, side-show shenanigans, spicy senorita’s and sensational salsa showdowns, the gauntlet has been thrown down and it’s up to the great BoomTown public to decide! Other more established areas refuse to allow such an outlandish statement to be made and the disgruntled folk of DownTown have awoken their mega monolithic monster, the Spider of Arcadia and instructed him to stomp his way through the seedy streets to stake his claim in the centre of DownTown to whip up the residents into a frenzied state ready to battle it out for the party crown – they may be Down, but they certainly not out… Keep an eye out for all the upcoming election debates on BoomTown’s facebook page.http://www.facebook.com/boomtownfair1?fref=ts

“After listening to the overall consensus of the BoomTown massive from last year, it was clear that what people really wanted was a device to ensure less time spent marching up the hill and more time spent on dancing! So the people have spoken and we have listened! We’ve pulled out all the stops to make this happen and are stupidly excited to be the first festival in the UK to have a Ski-lift running though our festival!”

Lak Mitchell and Chris Rutherford – BoomTown Fair Head Honchos

With so much going on behind the city walls of BoomTown in these normally sleepy winter months, it’s easy to forget that there is the whole musical line up still to be announced! Well, fear not as this has never been far from the Town Mayor’s mind and he is busy putting the finishing touches to the first musical morsels to be announced next Thursday 7th February!

Boomtown Fair announce Alborosie, Reel Big Fish and more

The first six to be announced are; MOBO award winner Alborosie, ska-punk supremo’s Reel Big Fish, legendary Jamaican Godfathers of ska The Skatalites, Jamaica’s number one female reggae artist Tanya Stephens, the indo-dub basslines of Asian Dub Foundation and the gypsy-punk global fusions of Balkan Beat Box. With a bounty of other heavy hitting, bass bashing, rock-n-romping acts firmly secured on the bill for Boomtown 2012, this is just the tip of the iceberg of what will be the maddest fair in the land!

Alborosie

With Alborosie topping the first of Boomtown’s line-up announcements, this is a sign of very good things to come! Knocking Damian Marley and Nas out of the running for the Best Reggae Act at the 2011 MOBO awards, Alborosie continues to go from strength to strength. First hitting the music scene back in the early 90’s with his band The Reggae National Tickets, this Sicilian born Rastafarian has won over critics and fans alike throughout his career, both as a band and later as a solo artist. His ascent to fame came with his debut album Soul Pirate which hosted some of his top hits including the mighty Kingston Town’ and Kingdom of Zion’Revellers will need to strap-in as Alborosie’s set will be amplified by Boomtown’s legendary soundsystem where the bass will be ballistic and the lyrics lethal!

With their big hitting tunes Sell Out’ and I want your girlfriend to be my girlfriend’; Reel Big Fish were the heavy weights of the Ska-punk revival in the mid to late 90’s. Known for their hyperkinetic stage shows, mischievous humour and reworking of new-wave classics, Reel Big Fish won over underground and mainstream audiences on both sides of the Atlantic and beyond. Boomtown is the perfect pond for Reel Big Fish, and the town centre has more than enough gusto to stage these larger than life showmen!

‘The Skatalites’ is a name that needs no introduction for ska and reggae fans. More than a band, The Skatalites were and are an institution, a collection of world class musicians who didn't just define the sound of Jamaica, they were the sound of Jamaica across the '50s and '60s. Reforming in the mid 80’s they have been touring and recording ever since. Favourites on the UK festival circuit, these stalwarts of Jamaican Ska are true professionals and put on an awe-inspiring show and spread sunshine at every gig.

Reggae songstress Tanya Stephens is one of the most popular female recording artists to come out of Jamaica in recent years. Bursting onto the dancehall scene with an arresting sound, she quickly proved she could more than handle herself within this predominantly male vocation. Over the years she’s grown into her position and delivered some of the most topical, insightful lyrics in reggae. With ‘It’s a Pity’ Tanya achieved international recognition as a leading reggae / dancehall artist. Boomtown cannot wait to get winding and grinding with this crowd-pleasing goddess of gutsy lyricism!

Asian Dub Foundation are all set to bring their unique blend of rapcore, dub, dancehall and raga with a hefty punk influence to the streets of Boomtown. Often hailed as the 90’s version of the Clash or Sex Pistols, ADF have always pioneered their political ideals through a heavy bassline and pounding drum. Also set to headline Boomtown 2012 is the whirling boundary-less sounds of Balkan Beat Box. This trio put a modern twist on Mediterranean folk music combing horns, reggae vocals and hip hop drums into one almightily energetic mix up of genre spanning funk!

In addition to these top names, there are loads more big hitting and underground gems booked for so far for Boomtown, please see below for a breakdown of all acts booked via genres…

Boomtown Fair to offer two slots to unsigned bands

Boomtown is the UK’s premier ska and reggae festival in Hampshire and it returns for its fourth year over the weekend 9th-12th August 2012.

Boomtown Fair

The 2011 event saw the festival sell out for a third time in its three year history with the festival goers bringing as much of the entertainment to the show as the organisers.

With so much packed into the small town, last year’s highlights included; majestic headliner Gogol Bordello, late night shenanigans from the Arcadia crew in their custom built roaming ‘Bug’ stage, dance-offs, marriages and body shaking bass round the clock from Bassline Circus and The Lions Den!

Year-on-year Boomtown Fair receives thousands of requests from unsigned acts from around the region (as one of the premier festivals in Hampshire) and across the UK applying to play at the festival, but spaces are always limited. So, for the first time, the Hampshire Festival has joined forces with the Live and Unsigned competition to give festival gigs to at least two acts to perform at the award winning festival! The lucky winners will be chosen from the Live Showcase Finals, to play a slot at Boomtown Fair.

Play Hampshire Festivals

Cotton Steadman of Boomtown Fair says; ‘Here at Boomtown we are excited to be working alongside Live and Unsigned. As a grassroots festival it's all about supporting up and coming artists and new music and keeping the scene new and fresh. We are really looking forward to discovering some new talent!’

Live & Unsigned is the biggest unsigned music competition for original unsigned bands and artists in the UK. It offers the winning act the chance to play at The O2 in London alongside some of the UK's best musicians as well as £100,000 in prizes, including an additional new main cash prize of £10,000 for the winning act to spend on development.

Auditions will begin in January 2012 and all acts in the competition are auditioned live. Acts that make it through the audition stage will get to perform to industry judges, A & R associates and celebrity guests. Judging last year’s competition and hopefully set to join the panel again in 2012 include Radio 1 DJs Annie Nightingale, Ras Kwame, Tom Deacon and Daniel P Carter, Kerrang’s Alex Baker and Happy Mondays star Bez.

The Boomtown architects have plans fully underway for reshaping, renovating and renewing the town for the Fair’s annual pilgrimage.  With expansion plans afoot to take over some of the wasteland on the outskirts of town, 2012 will see the festival grow into its surroundings and squeeze in even more weird and wonderful shenanigans!

Boomtown Fair is unlike any other festival: the legend of Boomtown tells it was once a small but prosperous retreat now overhauled into a land of lawless rebels, with only the town official’s to uphold its former glory. The 2011 event saw the festival sell out for a third time in its three year history with the festival goers brining as much of the entertainment to the show as the organisers.

With so much packed into the small town, last year’s highlights included; majestic headliner Gogol Bordello, late night shenanigans from the Arcadia crew in their custom built roaming ‘Bug’ stage, dance-offs, marriages and body shaking bass round the clock from Bassline Circus and The Lion’s Den!

Boomtown Fair 2011 SOLD OUT

The organisers released an extra 2,500 tickets just a month ago and now all the passes have been snapped up by bass hungry ‘Boomtowners’ who are revving themselves up for a solid four-days of pure escapism, entertainment and intrigue! With the 2011 festival doubling in size and ambition after the highly successful 2010 festival, this year is promising to be the best yet.

Lak Mitchell, co-director and co-founder of Boomtown says:
“We are over the moon at the support and enthusiasm we’ve had for this year’s festival. Thanks to everyone who has bought a ticket and helped keep the Boomtown dream alive! We can’t wait to open the town gates, the crew have been working solidly for the past 5-weeks to create this alternative, interactive and immersive world and now we just can’t wait to share it with everyone!”

On top of the excellent news that the festival has sold out, it is with sadness that Boomtown also have to announce the cancellation of Barrington Levy, as he has pulled out of several upcoming scheduled dates. Barrington Levy is now unable to keep to his confirmed shows for both Boomtown Fair and Outlook festival. Both festivals have tried everything in their power to ensure the booking was committed to but due to circumstances out of the festival director’s hands the shows have been cancelled. The good news in all this is that Gentleman’s Dub Club, who smashed their show last year and left the crowd pleading for more are now bumped up the bill and will be headlining the Lion’s Den on Saturday night for some high-octane, knee bashing skanking moves!

Boomtown Fair headliners announced

Gogol Bordello are an internationally acclaimed band that take the audience on an exhilarating rollercoaster journey with their performance. Fusing the heritage of front man Eugene Hütz’s nomadic journey from Ukraine to New York where he teamed up with the rest of the band, their unique sound and bizarre stage shows were born. The group’s early gigs involved playing straight gypsy music at Russian weddings, but their music soon developed into the hyper-kinetic explosion that earned them a solid following amongst New York’s downtown hipsters. Having performed at some of the world’s leading festivals and venues Gogol Bordello have become renowned as one of the best live acts on the circuit.

Caravan Palace are a French electro swing band that use an energetic blend of violins and accordions to create morish melodies. The band’s influences include Django Reinhardt, Vitalic, Lionel Hampton and Daft Punk. The band released their début studio album, Caravan Palace, on the Wagram label in October 2008. The record charted in Switzerland, Belgium and France, where it reached a peak position of #11. Not only do Caravan Palace combine classic electro with swing perfectly, but the catchy We Can Dance, Bambous and Je m’amuse will have you dancing for days.

Next on the Main Stage bill are icons of late 1970’s, early 1980’s ska revival scene The Selecter. With the full line up reuniting in summer of 2010, Pauline Black rejoining with Arthur ‘Gaps’ Hendrickson as The Selecter for the 30th Anniversary of their no. 5 UK album “Too Much Pressure”. Get ready for hits such as Gangsters vs. The Selecter, On My Radio and the ska anthem Three Minute Hero to be blasted out through the biggest bass pumping sound system to be seen at any festival!

[dunkelbunt] aka Ulf Lindemann, born in 1979 in Hamburg, lives and works as a DJ, composer, producer, radio editor and mixer of spices in Vienna since 2001. The Toasters experienced a small degree of commercial success in the late 1990s due to the popularity of third wave ska in North America. Their song “Two-Tone Army” is also the theme song for the Nickelodeon show KaBlam! (credited as the Moon Ska Stompers).
