Melt Festival add more acts

Fringe Events 2011
Last year, we attempted a first approach with a workshop held by Modeselektor. This year, we have even more to offer. From 16th to 17th July, free workshops (e.g. w/ Ostgut DJ Tobias Freund) and lectures (e.g. w/ Karhard Architektur, architects of Berlin’s Berghain as well as Bauhaus representative Burghard Duhm) take place, establishing a connection between electronic music, Melt!, Bauhaus, and art in general. In addition, Melt! festivalgoers have the opportunity to visit the Bauhaus exhibition for a reduced price of EUR 4. Signing up isn’t necessary. First come, first serve. Shuttle buses will be provided taking you to Dessau and back. To check out the entire programme, please go to our website. We will even extend our collaborations: Melt! Festival curates a stage at Farbfest Dessau, which takes place on the Bauhaus grounds as well as Dessau University. The Brandt Brauer Frick Ensemble is our first confirmed act for this event on 3rd September. We’re also looking forward to opening Intro Kneipe at Orangerie. From Friday to Sunday, the magazine will present all of its pop cultural facets. The perfect way to take a break in between acts. Besides interviews with performing artists and lectures, Intro’s editors picked out a variety of films and organised various book readings. For further info, click here (http://www.meltfestival.de/de/intro_kneipe). Melt! also goes sport this year. Together with Elbufercamp, we have a bike as well as a dragon boat rental ready for you. For further info and to sign up, click here (http://www.meltfestival.de/de/news/915459648/das-melt-wird-sportlich)

New Confirmations
For the third time, Editors will perform in Ferropolis. In 2005, the band performed in Ferropolis for the first time presenting their debut The Back Room in the sunny afternoon. Since then, their careers took off. In 2011, Editor are about to bring us all their hits from their debut to their 2009 album In This Light And On This Evening. We also have Architecture in Helsinki on board. With their playful synth sounds, and their unconventional use of instruments like glockenspiel, tuba, xylophone, recorder and tap dance shoes as a rhythmic element, Architecture in Helsinki truly stick out of the crowd. Also confirmed are Le Corps Mince de Françoise, the Icelandic combo Retro Stefson, the Australian DJ duo Bag Raiders as well as the London-based trio Is Tropical. Techno grandmaster Tobi Neumann, Andreas Dorau and Kuriose Naturale joined our line-up as well. Before and after Melt! acts conquer our various stages, we have our lovely changeover DJ and party posse ready for you: Fieber-Tanzparty, Revolver Club, Team Recorder, Fryzeit, Radio & Fernseh, Voodoohop, Karrera Klub, King Kong Kicks and Trashpop feat. Wolke und Timid Tiger. For further info on our changeover DJs, click here (http://www.meltfestival.de/de/news/3207914128/die-changeover-und-party-posse). Unfortunately, some acts did cancel on us. Matt And Kim, Tom Vek, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros as well as Duchess Says won’t be able to attend this year’s Melt! Festival.

Running Order & Melt! App
Our running order is also ready, which can be downloaded right here (http://www.meltfestival.de/de/acts) as well as our new and improved Melt! App 2011. Find all the Melt! info you need before and more importantly during Melt! Festival. So that you don’t have to use your mobile Internet connection too frequently, all data will be saved on your smart phone. Should there be any changes in our timetable, the app will inform you immediately. Of course, you are also able to put together your very own running order. Just mark the artists you want to see. To download the app, click here (http://itunes.apple.com/app/melt-2011/id445361830?mt=8). A new feature of our Melt! App 2011 is the friends finder. You receive an individual ID that you can give out to your friends to add. You will be able to see where your friends are at. In addition, we have our FAQs available for you when needed, a bus schedule as well as a map of the festival site and the camping area.

Jessie J cancels all her festival performances

Following the statement released by Jessie J regarding forthcoming Festival performance cancellations, including T in the Park, Festival Director Geoff Ellis comments: ‘I am  gutted. She was someone I was really looking forward to seeing and I’m sure a lot of T in the Parkers were too. We wish her a speedy recovery and hope to welcome her next year.’

Due to a serious injury, having broken her foot in two places Jessie J has had to undergo emergency surgery. As a result of this, under strict orders from her doctor she will not be able to perform for a number of weeks so she can heal and recuperate properly. She is extremely upset and has sent a message to all her fans.
“Sorry doesn’t feel enough to say, I am devastated for my fans that I know have been waiting to see me and working hard for tickets. I was so excited about the summer and I’m as upset as you all are. But unfortunately these things happen. I have to remain positive and I promise I will make it up later in the year.”

Latitude Festival add more comedy to the lineup

Latitude is ecstatic to announce that the King of sardonic observational humour with a dry yet charming wit – the delightful Dylan Moran joins the Comedy line-up for Latitude this year. This Irish comedy legend rose to fame in the mid nineties – winning a string of awards – including the So You Think Your Funny Award at Edinburgh Festival and most notably becoming the youngest winner of the then titled Perrier Comedy Award in 1996. But it was in 2000 that he became a mainstream success when the sitcom Black Books first aired – his portrayal of the hilarious book shop owner Bernard Black as a miserable, unsociable, chain-smoking drunk – delivered this despicable character straight to our hearts.

His acting has also taken him to the big screen featuring alongside Simon Pegg in Shaun Of The Dead, Run, Fatboy, Run as well as a cameo in the film Notting Hill. But it’s his stand-up that sees Moran at his truly brilliant best. Voted Number 14 in Channel 4’s 100 Funniest People in 2010 – his shambolic persona yet precise articulation and fantastical imagery makes for a unique and frankly unmissable performance.  Moran will be joining Latitude on a high from his current UK tour ‘yeah, yeah’.

American comic, writer and actress Rita Rudner will be joining the all star line-up at Latitude’s Comedy Arena. Now a stalwart of the Vegas comedy scene Rudner has recorded several award-winning comedy specials including ‘Rita Rudner: Born to Be Mild’, ‘Rita Rudner: Married Without Children’ for HBO and ‘Rita Rudner: Live From Las Vegas’ for PBS. Rudner’s recent work includes her book, ‘I Still Have It… I Just Can’t Remember Where I Put It: Confessions of a Fifty something’ and her stand-up show, which since 2001, has been performed almost exclusively in Las Vegas, selling over one million tickets. With the show proving such a success it has recently been moved to a larger theatre (The Venetian)!

Unfortunately Greg Davies has had to cancel his appearance at Latitude this year.
Since its inception in 2006, Latitude has changed the face of festivals forever, with a passion only matched by its ambition. Encompassing all aspects of the art and music worlds Latitude is the only place that brings together the best in music, literature, comedy, poetry, film, theatre, cabaret, art, dance, opera and fashion for one spectacular weekend. With an unrivalled line-up taking shape, Latitude 2011 will be another exhilarating, scintillating and inspirational festival of fun.

Elsewhere throughout the weekend, festival goers can enjoy readings from leading poets and authors including Linton Kwesi Johnson, Louise Wener, Tim Key, Simon Armitage, Andrew Smith and Alexei Sayle; top comics Alan Carr and Omid Djalili and a festival debut of Never Mind The Buzzcocks; exciting theatre and dance productions presented by The Gate, Flawless, Sadler’s Wells and English National Ballet to name but a few, cabaret performances from David Schneider & Friends, Will Adamsdale, Idiots of Ants; BAFTA return to the Film & Music Arena with a fantastic programme of Q&As, discussions and workshops including comedy stars Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon discussing their hilarious work on Michael Winterbottom’s ‘The Trip’ and Tate Britain with Nigel Barrett and Louise Mari lead a visual feast inspired by Tate Britain’s Watercolour exhibition.

With DJs, The Winter’s Ball and late night parties found throughout the site, it is a unique and special weekend of fun, culture and entertainment. An intimate world away from reality waiting to be explored and enjoyed.

Hideout Festival 2011 SOLD OUT

Hideout Festival 2011 sells out one week prior to the three day electronic extravaganza featuring 2manydjs, Sven Vath, Seth Troxler, Ms Dynamite, Annie Mac, Toddla T, Marco Carola, Eric Prydz among others. Two of the UK’s most successful promoters, Warehouse Project and Electronic Music Group succeed once more, ensuring 2011’s Hideout Festival will be the summer highlight for thousands of festival goers.

With further acts including Jamie xx, Doorly, Redlight, Jamie Jones, Simian Mobile Disco, Fake Blood, Crookers, Sub Focus and Erol Alkan Hideout’s success confirms Croatia as the new heart of clubbing, sweeping past Ibiza to steal the party crown. Taking place from 1st – 3rd July 2011 Hideout is set to be the biggest weekend of the summer, bringing internationally renowned DJs to a stunning Croatian Island. Boat parties throughout the hot afternoons will set the tone for evenings ahead as Crosstown Rebels, Resident Advisor and more host until sunset to get the party started.  In contrast to the performance of many UK festivals, Hideout leads the way to Europe with thousands following. Festival goers across the UK and Europe have snapped up all the tickets to ensure they will be at the first ever Hideout Festival. Boasting arguably the best electronic line-up on offer in 2011, Hideout Festival spans Electro, Techno, Drum N Base and more, offering a plethora of sounds in an idyllic setting.

Reading and Leeds Alternative Stage lineup announced

ROISIN CONATY was the winner of the Best Newcomer Award at last year’s Edinburgh Festival and she travels from Camden to Leeds for our entertainment. There’s music from the hotly tipped DRY THE RIVER and PETE AND THE PIRATES, spoken word fused with hip hop from DIZRAELI and film with FUTURE CINEMA in collaboration with THE GUILLEMOTS amongst many other names.

Just some of the artists confirmed for this year’s festival – which takes place on on Friday 26th to Sunday 28th August at Little John’s Farm in Reading and Bramham Park in Leeds – include: MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE, THE STROKES, PULP, MUSE, BEADY EYE, JANE’S ADDICTION, 2MANYDJS, THE STREETS, UNKLE Sounds, SIMIAN MOBILE DISCO, MIGHTY MIGHTY BOSSTONES, DESCENDENTS, PETER DOHERTY, THE HORRORS, and THE MIDNIGHT BEAST.

Transgressive presents its five year anniversary party at Leeds Festival with special guests JOHNNY FLYNN who arrives with his band The Sussex Wit at this year’s Leeds Festival. With a CV that cites extra-curricular activities as an actor and poet, his musical prowess has picked up plaudits from both side of the Atlantic particularly after last year’s ‘Been Listening’ (his second) album which has seen him linked to the so called ‘Nu Folk’ scene spawned by the likes of Mumford and Sons and Laura Marling.

“Their rattly alt-folk is a rag-tag mixture of Americana, gospel and indie rock” hailed one critic last year on the newly arrived London quintet DRY THE RIVER.   With an extensive live CV under their belt including some rapturously received shows at this year’s SxSW festival, the band released their first single ‘New Ceremony’ in March and are working on their debut album which should emerge later in 2011. Catch this beguiling and enthralling band.
www.drytheriver.net   (Leeds – Saturday)

Recently described somewhat lovingly as “something like a cross between the Kinks and Television Personalities” on the release of their second album ‘One Thousand Pictures’, PETE AND THE PIRATES bring musical social commentaries and youthful exuberance to the Alternative Stage at Leeds this year. Since emerging from Reading back in 2007, the band have continued to build a reputation for their live shows which appears to show no signs of letting up.

Audiences can expect the best in film and music with a new collaboration from FUTURE CINEMA with Mercury & Brit Award Nominees GUILLEMOTS. Fresh from the release of their 3rd album ‘Walk The River’, the event promises an immersive fusion of cinema and sound as the band play live to very special secret film.   Ahead of the feature presentation, sister-organisation Future Shorts present a series of specially selected shorts from across the Globe including surreal Animations ‘Bonefeather & Sam’s Hot Dogs’, music videos from REM & El Guincho, and much more.
www.futurecinema.co.uk   (Leeds – Thursday)

FUTURE DISCO, the award winning compilation series and worldwide party people, supply the very best in 21st Century Disco to close Friday night with an extra special bang.   Future Disco bring their late night sleazy discotheque to ensure the party continues into the twilight hours. Under the shimmer of the mirror ball and with special guest DJs supplying the soundtrack, we welcome you to the Future Disco.
www.futuredisco.net   (Leeds – Friday)

With a host of awards stretching back to his arrival in 2003 and including the coveted Chortle Best Show gong last year, TOM WRIGGLESWORTH has established himself as one the most original and talented comedians on the UK and international circuit.   2010 saw a sold out UK tour, and his ‘Open Return Letter To Richard Branson’ commissioned as a series by Radio 4. An articulate and natural raconteur, Wrigglesworth appears at both sites this year, miss him at your peril.
www.tomwrigglesworth.co.uk   (Leeds – Friday / Reading – Sunday)

From Camden, North London ROISIN CONATY arrives at Leeds this year after winning the Best Newcomer Award at the Edinburgh Festival last summer. She appeared on Comic Relief earlier in 2011 with David Walliams and has recently returned from the Melbourne Comedy Festival.   An exciting new talent so expect likeable self-flagellation and hilarious observations.
www.myspace.com/roisinconaty   (Leeds – Sunday)

Rapper, writer, poet and singer, DIZRAELI is a hip hop tour de force. Taking on politics, love, rain, supermarkets and the nasty bits of Engurland with a sidelong smile and a twist of phrase, Diz is the BBC Radio 4 Poetry Slam winner, the 2006/7 Farrago UK champion, and (according to his website) a massive idiot at times.

You’ve seen him on a host of television programmes including ‘8 Out Of Ten Cats’, ‘Celebrity Juice’ and ‘The Friday Night Project’, now you can experience ROB ROUSE first hand as he visits us at Reading & Leeds. Described by The Scotsman as “laugh out loud funny”, while the Edinburgh Evening News said “the tears of laughter came in floods”.

His October 2009 debut in London’s Soho Theatre made him the youngest stand-up ever to perform a solo season in the West End.   As one of the fastest rising stars in comedy at the age of just 20, winner 2011’s ‘Scottish Variety Award’for best new comedian, DANIEL SLOSS is nothing short of hysterical. He’ll certainly be the name on everyone’s lips at this year’s festival.

Rob Broderick and James Hancox, take to the stage as ABANDOMAN, claiming to be Ireland’s No 7 hip-hop act.   Yet give them a few minutes and some suggestions from the floor, and they’ll be improvising the kind of comedy platinum that has made them one of the stand-out new acts around.   Improvised rap and comedy at its finest.

As a well-respected and highly regarded young stand-up comic, having performed on the UK comedy circuit to great acclaim JIMMY McGHIE heads to the Alternative Stage for another quality performance. He took his first solo show, Jimmy McGhie’s Northern Meeting‘, to the Edinburgh Festival in 2009 receiving rave reviews and returned in 2010 with a new self-titled solo show.  Definitely one to watch.

DEAD CAT BOUNCE are an international rock & roll comedy super group made up of Mick Cullinan, Demian Fox, Shane O’Brien and James Walmsley. Expect everything from hip-hop slow jams to 80’s stadium rock anthems, all performed in tight trousers with smoke machines and a lot of rock posturing!

With an amiable confident stage presence and a well written set DANNY MCLOUGHLIN delivers material with more than just an immediate pay-off line, preferring to take the joke one or two steps further. Confident enough to take a risk on stage he does so not to the detriment of the audience, keeping them laughing along or hanging on every word as a good MC should do.

Having showcased his talents on esteemed comedic TV vehicles such as Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow, not to mention being one of the lead writers on the hit BBC Three show Russell Howard’s Good News, STEPHEN WILLIAMS is one of the best stand-up performers around, so if you’re any sort of comedy fan…you really shouldn’t miss this.

GAR MURRAN won the Bulmers Comedy Competition in 2006, and as a result got picked to support Puppetry of the Penis for two nights at the Olympia Theatre in Dublin. He was in the final of So You Think You’re Funny at The Edinburgh Festival the following year and now performs regularly at the Laughter Lounge, The International Bar and Comedy Cellar.

Ex. PE teacher, rugby player and Elvis impersonator MIKE BUBBINS took the plunge to be a comedian in 2008 and since then has written and performed his debut show at The Edinburgh Fringe Festival, been a regular guest comedian on BBC Radio Wales, and regularly performs, and headlines, at some of the best comedy clubs and theatres across the UK. Mike’s comedy style could maybe be described as mix of observation and exasperation. Although really funny would be more accurate. He MC’s at Leeds this year.

Ranked no. 1 in Kerrang Magazine’s ‘100 Gigs That Shook The World’, and voted Nirvana’s Greatest Moment by fans in an NME poll, this legendary performance from Reading 92 is one of the defining festival moments in the world. This very special screening of NIRVANA 92 LIVE AT READING runs through the whole set, including ‘Lithium’, ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ and ‘Breed’. (Leeds – Friday)

Earlier this year, The Beastie Boys released a surreal comedic short film entitled FIGHT FOR YOUR RIGHT REVISITED to commemorate the 25th anniversary of their breakthrough hit ‘(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party)’ and the release of their new album ‘Hot Sauce Committee Part Two’. The film, which features cameos by an amazing number of famous actors, focuses on a conflict between the classic Beastie Boys (played by Seth Rogen, Danny McBride and Elijah Wood) and their time travelling selves (played by Will Ferrell, Jack Black and John C. Reilly). Be sure to set aside half an hour of your time and Ch-Check It Out.
(Leeds – Saturday / Reading – Sunday)

The award-winning photographer Seamus Murphy collaborated with PJ HARVEY on her latest album ‘Let England Shake’ and directed a series of short films to accompany all 12 songs. They feature still and moving images from a 5,000 mile road-trip Murphy undertook around England. He has worked similarly with still photography on journeys through America and Russia and they make up a visual diary of Murphy’s journey, travelling light and alone, and his attempt to document England and the English. He has mixed his observations on England with images from his work in Afghanistan, Iraq and the Middle East – places Polly refers to in her depiction of England. The film soundtrack, the studio recording of the album ‘Let England Shake’, is mixed at times with footage and audio Murphy captured of Harvey in rehearsal and in performance. In addition some of the album lyrics were given a voice by people he encountered on his journey.

T-Dance, T in the Park Audience gets active

The 80’s retro-style mass participation dance routine is part of the year of Active Scotland event programme, supported by EventScotland. The dance routine hosted by two dancers live on stage, will guide the Main Stage crowd through the dance moves. The routine, specifically devised for the festival’s 85,000 daily audience will also be shown by way of the main stage jumbotron screens so the audience can familiarise themselves with the sequences in advance.

Paul Bush OBE, EventScotland Chief Operating Officer said: “It’s fantastic to see T in the Park, one of Scotland’s biggest events, embracing the values of the year of Active Scotland by promoting the benefits of an energetic and healthy lifestyle. The T-Dance is a unique and spontaneous way to encourage and inspire festival-goers, and the people of Scotland and its visitors to get active. T in the Park is a fantastic example of why Scotland is the perfect stage for the biggest and best active events.”

The T-Dance will be set to none other than 80’s hip-hop floor filler ‘Push It’ by Salt-N-Pepa. The routine is choreographed by Barrowland Ballet’s Natasha Gilmore who has danced and devised for The Institute of Crazy Dancing and BBC’s The Big Dance Class, has choreographed music videos for Basement Jaxx and is a former Artist in Residence at Dance House, Glasgow. The dancers who will lead on stage are Vince Virr (of Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake) and Jade Adamson (of Barrowland Ballet).

Choreographer Natasha Gilmore comments:“T in the Park’s crowd is renowned the world over so who better to participate in a huge dance routine with us before Blondie perform on the Main Stage. We will be showing some of the key movements from the dance on the Main Stage screens over the weekend so we’re anticipating some great moves and grooves from the crowd at 3pm on the Sunday.”

So, Sunday 10th July, 3pm, Main Stage – time to ‘Push it real good!’ in the first ever T-Dance.

MONIKA KRUSE JOINS THE WE LOVE… LINE-UP
Due to circumstances beyond our control, Joris Voorn is now no longer able to join us at South West Four 2011. We have however found a more than suitable replacement. One of Europe’s finest underground DJs and the ‘Grand Dame’ of German electronic music, we are delighted to welcome Monika Kruse to the SW4 lineup. The Terminal M and Electric Avenue Recordings label boss has taken her sound across the globe and we are now able to bring this to SW4 for the first time.

“I am very excited to play SW4 for the first time. I have heard already a lot of good things from colleges about the festival so I’m looking forward to this. It will be a lot of fun, see you there!”Monika Kruse
