Summer Festival Guide’s preview of this years RockNess

Very few festivals offer such a diverse selection of bands in a setting as breath taking as RockNess. Now in its seventh year the festival returns the weekend after jubilee bank holiday weekend in the stunning surroundings of Clune Farm on the banks of Loch Ness.

With a little over three weeks to go and the e-mail confirming my attendance fresh in my inbox it’s certainly something to get excited about and to kick start the UK festival season.

Rockness will be the first big festival I’ll be photographing and reporting on, several artists within the massive line-up have already caught my eye and will be a definite must to photograph over the weekend.

I will have the opportunity to experience new artists and bands alongside those already seen, on top of interacting with the crowd on a whole new level; Working a festival with this different perspective & atmosphere will make it one to remember.

DeadMau5

RockNess 2012 promises to be a success once again after winning the NME Awards Best Small Festival for the second consecutive year. The eclectic line-up sees English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran headline on Friday, Canadian Electro house producer Joel Thomas Zimmerman AKA Deadmau5 lead the bill on Saturday and Scottish rock sensation Biffy Clyro brining the festival to a close on Sunday. Other live acts appearing across the weekend include Wretch 32, Noah & the Whale, Mumford & Sons, Annie Mac, Justice, The Pigeon Detectives, DJ Fresh, Friendly Fires, Knife Party, Madeon & Beardyman while the Comedy stage is host once again to Scottish Comedian of the Year, Ro Campbel along-side Daniel Sloss with many more also appearing.

Blissfields Festival 2012: “Game For It”

The festival has been applauded over the past 11 years for its attention to detail, creativity, family friendly atmosphere and wide-ranging musical and arts bill, but above all, for remaining at an intimate 2,000 capacity, following years of critical praise, stellar live performances from some of the country’s biggest live music acts, and sell-out crowds.

In 2012, Blissfields nod their school cap to the world of sport, offering a dandy revival of the Great British Summertime and a golden age of playground camaraderie and frivolity. With a full program of sports day shenanigans, a school disco and late night ballyhoo, expect your mischievous tutors to be on fine form as they guide you through the most fun you’ll have with your chums all year. Hoorah! Hoorah, indeed!

This year you’ll have the opportunity to represent your House, as well as vote for House Captains, once again giving fans of the festival another way to be a part of the makings of the event. Although Blissfields will not be strict on the dress code, they warn that Hall Monitors may have to be assigned to make sure you are all upholding the Blissfields reputation.

Grab your jolly hockey sticks and catch us round the back of the bike shed for the best “last day of term” style fun you ever had, curated by TrackSuit&Tie.

The team are time-travelling to Blissfields to bring us some of the very best Old Skool 80s inspired Sports Day classics, all with some very alternative twists! Undertake some serious bonding whilst getting in the sack race, flirt your way to victory in the Egg & Spooning, find your feet in the 7-legged challenge and propel yourself into the Space Hopper Long-Jump. Show you’ve got the moves in the Hipster Swingathon, de-feet your opponent in the Sock WrestlingRing and pop yourself silly in the Balloon Fencing Championships!

Exclusively for 2012, you’ll also take on some truly British feats – just make sure you dress up for the Dangerous Dressage in our very own Showjumping Ring, and don’t forget to take time for the incredibly messy Royal Tea!

The grand finale of Blissfields Sports Day will see all four school houses enter the gladiatorial ring of the main arena to fight it out in the Greatest of all British Challenges:The Tug of War.

The Blackout, We Were Promised Jetpacks and more added to T in the Park lineup

The Blackout, We Were Promised Jetpacks, Vukovi, St. Lucia, Broken Hands and James Levy and the Blood Red Rose are all heading to Kinross over the weekend of 6th – 8th July.

As well as an ultra impressive bill of some of the biggest bands and best breakthrough acts on the planet, T in the Park 2012 has all the ingredients to be the hottest weekend of the summer. At the heart of the festival with an atmosphere second to none is the legendary campsite, which opens its gates on the Thursday to kick off the ultimate four-day weekend. Healthy T is a chilled haven where fans can refuel with the finest fresh festival cuisine, relax with a massage or soak up the sun on the picnic benches. Refresh offers glamour puss facilities galore, with a pamper parlour that’s equipped with mirrors, hair dryers and straighteners, plus posh flushing loos and a luxurious salon-standard hair washing facility. Those looking for luxury living at T in the Park can camp in style in The Residence, with a range of boutique accommodation options available at www.tinthepark.com/residence.

Currently in the studio recording their fourth album, The Blackout are still flying high from the success of their 2011 album Hope. With their headline slot on the Kerrang! Tour earlier this year proving their credentials as a phenomenal live act, The Blackoutare set to deliver an epic festival performance at T in the Park 2012.

We Were Promised Jetpacks will also be making a welcome appearance in Kinross this July. The Glasgow-based foursome have had an incredible year so far, which has seen them release their critically acclaimed second album In the Pit of the Stomach, embark upon a worldwide tour, and deliver a blow-away debut performance at this year’s Coachella festival. The boys also won the Scottish Alternative Music Award for Best Live Act in March, and fans can see why at T in the Park this summer.

Troon four-piece Vukovi describe themselves as ‘a fight between Skunk Anansie and Rage Against the Machine.’  Vukovi burst on to the scene when their debut track Get Hot and Feel the Butterflies was championed on BBC Radio 1 and since then the band have gone from strength to strength with rave reviews for the hugely successful twin EPs It Looked So Good On Me… and But I Won’t Wear It Again. It’s going to be a special moment when these Scottish treasures play on home turf at T in the Park this summer.

Singer Janine Shilstone, Vukovi said: "T in the Park last year was one of the best weekends of my life, but performing at it this year has just changed that as that will top it! I don't think there's an audience anywhere else in the world that can top the crowd at T in the Park."

Brooklyn-based St. Lucia, aka producer Jean-Philip Grobler, brings the tribal sounds of his native South Africa together with edgy pop to create his truly unique sound, as showcased in his astounding self-titled debut EP. Earning comparisons to Empire of the Sun and fellow T in the Park act The Temper Trap, St. Lucia will bring his soaring, dance-tinged beats to the festival stage this summer.

Critically acclaimed newcomers Broken Hands became the first signings to Analogue Enhanced Digital Records after wowing the label’s founders James Endeacott and Edwyn Collins (of Orange Juice fame). Their alternative blend of blues-infused indie is wowing crowds across the UK and they’re sure to receive a rapturous reception as they make their T in the Park debut

James Levy and the Blood Red Rose brings his lush melodies to T in the Park, fresh from the release of his smouldering debut album Pray To Be Free, produced by Guy Berryman of Coldplay fame. A romantic collection of jaunty pop songs and bruised ballads, the album has been widely praised by critics, and his set is sure to be hugely adored by T in the Parkers this summer.

Rita Ora added to T in the Park 2012 lineup

JAY Z’s latest protégé Rita Ora made a huge impression when she featured on the no.1 hit from DJ Fresh Hot Right Now, and with the release of her own debut single R.I.P. this week, she looks destined for more chart success. Written by Drake, co-produced by Chase & Status and heavyweight production duo Stargate, the track also features fellow T in the Park artist and prince of UK hip hop, Tinie Tempah. Rita Ora is one of this summer’s hottest must-see acts and her T in the Park performance is not to be missed.
