Transgressive Records at Leeds Festival

SBTRKTSBTRKT aka Aaron Jerome is already playing a DJ set at this year’s festival, but will close the Alternative Stage in Leeds with a live set.   Famous for remixing the likes of MIA, Basement Jaxx, Mark Ronson and Underworld, he has just released his eponymous debut album.   This is a rare opportunity to see this exemplary artist, or perhaps not, as he is usually performing from behind the tribal masks that have become his trademark.   Dancing will be obligatory …

Winner of the Guardian First Album Award for his debut‘Lucky Shiner’ GOLD PANDA aka Derwin Panda  has been one of the most acclaimed new artists of the last 12 months.   He started by building up a library of

Gold Panda

original, dizzyingly eclectic electronic music incorporating a disparate mix of influences and source material. The results were gleaming instrumental hip-hop tracks saturated with bright colors and sublimely chopped-up vocal samples.

THREE TRAPPED TIGERS recently released their debut album ‘Route One or Die’ which NME described as “…the sound of imagination itself”.   The type of electronica put forward by the London trio defies classification but we call it music to enjoy yourself to and this will definitely be happening in the tent.

“Ice cold fucking synth music” is how BECOMING REAL describes his sound, we say it’s like a strand of early grime music he’s stretched, warping it into ever more pretty, frightening, ghostly shapes.  From starting out in a school band playing covers of Sonic Youth, Toby Ridler has evolved into one of the darkest new artists coming out of London.  You’ll be scared, but you’ll enjoy it!

Just some of the artists confirmed for this year’s festival – which takes place on on Friday 26th to Sunday 28th August at Little John’s Farm in Reading and Bramham Park in Leeds – include:  MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE, THE STROKES, PULP, MUSE, BEADY EYE, JANE’S ADDICTION, 2MANYDJS, THE STREETS, UNKLE Sounds, SIMIAN MOBILE DISCO,  MIGHTY MIGHTY BOSSTONES, DESCENDENTS, PETER DOHERTY, THE HORRORS,  and THE MIDNIGHT BEAST.  On the Alternative Stage you can also find MARK THOMAS, RUSSELL KANE, TIM MINCHIN, HENRY ROLLINS, LEE NELSON, MARK WATSON, THE RUBBERBANDITS and ANDREW O’NEILL.

Persil Pass on the Love Picnic @ Camp Bestival

Jo WhileyWill you go down to the woods today? Or are memories of teddy bear picnics as distant as Stylophones, Space Hoppers and Rubik’s cubes? Well, happily the traditional teddy bears picnic is set for a refresh this year thanks to Jo Whiley and Persil 2in1 with Comfort.

This summer sees the launch of ‘Persil Pass on the Love’ picnics, where mums and their little ones are encouraged to get together with friends, bring along their once-loved-but-now-forgotten teddies  - newly washed – and swap them with other children to be cherished again!

We all know that kids quickly grow out of their teddies, so rather than throw them away, Jo is encouraging mums bring their old (but clean!) soft toys and then pass them on for another child to love – either by swapping with a friend or donating them to charity partner Oxfam.

To launch the campaign, Jo will be holding the first ever ‘Persil Pass on the Love Picnic’ at Camp Bestival on Saturday 30th July, providing a fun activity to keep the kids happy before the music gets started! At the award-winning kid-friendly festival, families will be able to see the DJ and TV Presenter take part, swap their newly-washed soft toys and join in on the first of this summer’s picnics.

Persil 2in1 with Comfort liquid detergent leaves laundry so soft that it can be used on even the most precious items, so that well-loved teddies stay clean, irresistibly soft, smelling gorgeous – and ready to attend a picnic!

Festival-lover Jo Whiley says “As a mum, I know how difficult it can be to find family activities over the summer, which is why I think the fresh take on once-retro teddy bear’s picnics is such an inspiring idea. Toys will not only be given a new lease of life but with Oxfam, they can be passed on for other children to enjoy. Please host your own ‘Persil Pass on the Love’ picnic with friends and family this summer and let us know how you get on!”

For your chance to win a family ticket to the first ever ‘Persil Pass on the Love Picnic’ at Camp Bestival visit www.persil.co.uk/kids-activities/pass-on-the-love. Alternatively from July 25th hold your very own picnic by getting an exclusive Persil picnic pack at www.netmums.com/persilpassonthelove. Among the picnic goodies in the pack is an Oxfam collection sack – and with over 700 shops across the UK, you will be able to pass on the love, the soft toys, and any other items you may want to contribute with minimum fuss!

Heineken Open’er Festival 2011 Review

It was the tenth anniversary of the Heineken Open’er this year and with headlining acts including; Prince, Coldplay and The Strokes, this years was a line up that rivalled any other main stream festival. Situated in the north of Poland, it might not be the first to come to mind when thinking about going away to a festival next summer, but it’s soon making a name for itself for as an international festival. We arrived on Friday morning having, much to our dismay, missed sets by Daktari, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Paulo Nutini and Coldplay, but that was not to get in the way of a great line up for day two. Once we’d battled with the wind and rain to set up our tent, we set off to explore the festival grounds, but came to find that they were actually a bit of a ghost town. Each day the festival grounds didn’t open until four, so until then, there wasn’t actually anything happening.
Heineken Opener
The festival really only got going at around 8:30pm with Abraham Inc. opening on the World Stage, a blend of Klezmer music, funk, hip hop and jazz, with a beat so infectious, the crowd though soaking wet, could hardly contain themselves, and neither could we. Headlining on the main stage, Pulp performed a set that no one would easily forget, as the rain poured relentlessly on to the stage the band refused defeat and continued playing to a soaking wet, yet wildly adoring audience. The frenzy culminating as Jarvis Cocker screamed out to the crowd, ‘Gdansk would you like to Gdance?‘ and they did, breaking out into manic dancing the party continued regardless of the stormy weather.
Pulp
Day three, like day two, got off to a slow start. We were rudely awakened at a ridiculous time, (before midday), by music blaring out from speakers set up on the camp site. Not cool. Forced to get up, we trudged to the town to find some warm food, before the festival kicked off again. Prince, put on an amazing show, confetti cannons, four encores and fireworks, he never did do things by halves did he? Day four brought with it the sunshine that we had been expecting all along, and These new Puritans, as well as a set by James Blake were truly breathtaking. The clash of organic sounds and tribal rhythms, with the produced sounds of the synths, make These New Puritans absolutely unmissable. And James Blake’s, pensive melodies, artful use of delay and relatively small band left chills running down our spines.
These New Puritans
On the main stage that night, The Strokes opened with ‘New York City Cops’ and continued to play almost their entire début album, to an ecstatic crowd. Then Deadmau5 took over to close the festival with an unforgettable set which the crowd absolutely loved, it was the perfect end to an almost flawless festival.
deadmau5
As we left for the final time, we had little to complain about, the Heineken Open’er definitely competed with all the major festivals around today, but there was something missing. If festivals are about the music alone, then the Heineken really did deliver, but, if its about more than that, if its about the experience of being taken to a new world, of street artists, creative spaces, quirky venues, and a unique shared experience, then this festival comes up short.
The big sponsor, left little room for any sort of character, everywhere we looked there was the Heineken logo, and though drinks were way cheaper than you will ever find them at a UK festival, the choice was Heineken and nothing else. If you want to explore a new city, and go to a festival with a line up pretty similar to a UK main stream festival, then the Open’er is great, but if you’re looking for something a little more unique and quirky then this probably isn’t it.

The Heartbreaks, The Phantom Band and more for Latitude Festival

- SUNRISE ARENA –

Follow the winding path through the enchanting woodland and you will stumble upon the Sunrise Arena, a haven for the best in up-and-coming music and be the first to see tomorrow’s stars today, deep within the woods.

Hailing from Morecombe, The Heartbreaks are wrapped up in the typical English seaside town. Their jangling, keening indie has brought them no end of impressive support slots with the sounds of the moment like Hurts and The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, as well as peers like Jack Peñate, The View and Carl Barât. With a slew of catchy singles behind them – including the most recent, ‘Jealous, Don’t You Know’ – there’s plenty to be intrigued about with these four Lancashire lads. (Sunday)

The Phantom Band are Glasgow’s bellowing choral minstrels. Sifting percussive rhythms and madrigal melodies, see this six-piece utilising every available instrument on stage to build a swelling striding masterwork. Intricate the vocal work and woodblock percussion may be, their tunes are never lost in the architectural wonders they’re building. Their second album, last year’s ‘The Wants’, is an engrossing listen and one they interpret on stage incredibly well. A real must-see at Latitude 2011. (Friday)

Mid-teens singer Dionne Bromfield was the first signing to Amy Winehouse’s Lioness Records label in 2009 and sang alongside Winehouse both at The Prince’s Trust Ball in the same year and on the popular TV show Strictly Come Dancing. Most recently, she’s announced a collaboration with fellow pop sensation Tinchy Stryder and, using re-written lyrics originally penned by 2009 Mercury Prize winner Speech Debelle, has recorded a song for the Olympic Torch Relay; ‘Spinnin’ For 2012′. To date Bromfield has released two albums of soul covers and originals, wowing many with her powerful voice despite her young age and the short time between discovery and recording. This talent will be sharing her lung power with us at Latitude. (Saturday)

Devon born singer-songwriter Ben Howard has recently been selling out shows in the UK and Europe sharing his Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell influenced songs with his grass-roots fanbase.  Singles ‘Old Pine’, and ‘The Wolves’ (released  on Ben  from  Mumford  & Sons’ label, Communion) will be enhanced  in the live setting on the Sunrise Arena by a cellist, an electric and double-bass guitar and drums. Eager fans will get to hear tracks from his debut album which is due out in the autumn. (Friday)

Yellowire is the new project of former Wire Daisies man, Ol Beach. With a real focus on the anthemic rush provided by arena bands like U2, Coldplay and Snow Patrol, the band surrounds Ol with lashings of reverb and space-eating sound to boost his chorus vocal lines up into the stratosphere. February single ‘Last Breath’ really brought the bold, airwave-snatching sound to people’s attention as they wait for the debut album later this year. This could be your last chance to catch Yellowire in an intimate setting before they start climbing the charts. (Saturday)

Danish four-piece Treefight For Sunlight will dazzle Latitude Festival fans with their sunshine pop tracks; ‘Facing the Sun’ and ‘What became of You and I’ from their self titled debut album.  Soaring triple sopranos, a rising melody line and keyboards will make you smile and no doubt you’ll be humming their songs for the rest of the day when they play the Sunrise Arena. (Sunday).

Aaron Wright and The Aprils is primed and ready to astonish crowds at Latitude with his fantastic Scottish melodies and lyrical charm. His debut self-titled album boasts a selection of special guests who have all previously performed at Latitude – including Belle and Sebastian and Camera Obscura, winning him support on national radio stations.  Aaron’s Dylan and Young influences and his passion for music make the Sunrise Arena the perfect place to watch him on Sunday afternoon. (Sunday)

Bristol’s Yes Sir Boss began causing a ruckus in 2008 and have taken their brass-laden, ska-tinged sounds all across the country. You can’t help but stomp along to their thumping, and at times sensitive, songs. With hints of the guitar madness of The Coral, their jaunty interplay criss-crosses the vocals in an impressive latticework of melody. They’ve collaborated with soulstress Joss Stone on a live cover of The Beatles’ ‘Come Together’ showing not only their open-minded approach to music and genres, but their willingness to embrace other performers too. Expect fun, positivity and surprises when these five guys and one girl perform songs from their debut album. (Saturday)

Leeds troupe East Park Reggae Collective combine their love for politics and
reggae to create their unique sound and pride themselves on making the whole crowd move. With songs calling on inspiration from social prejudice and corrupt leaders through to prevailing good times, East Park Reggae Collective is as current and real as it is musical and entertaining. With Time Out claiming they ‘”Could well be the first band since The Specials to bring Reggae back to the masses” be sure to catch them before they eclipse their current billing. (Saturday)

Steel City Soul Club are a collection of diverse and skilled musicians who are fast becoming established within Sheffield’s musical terrain. While this collective has the potential to move within the elevates spheres of the music world, the energy and class that permeates their sound speaks far more about their enthusiasm for the music they play, than their ambitions in the music business. Their sound pays homage to an eclectic back-catalogue of musical genres: from the rough and sampled hip-hop aesthetic, to the smooth and expressive aura of soul and jazz, all juxtaposed against a helping of funk, reggae, dancehall and ska. Admitting that they originally formed as an Afro-beat collective, they credit their current sound to months spent in practice rooms and studios editing, scrapping, and rearticulating lines to create their current repertoire. And it seems this hard work is paying off. The future is looking bright for Soul Club.  (Sunday)

Gabriel Deep already has some of the biggest UK and European Festivals under his belt and 2011 is set to be an even more exciting year for the Londoner. Playing notoriously varied sets, he has built up a reputation through word of mouth which has seen him gain a residency at Manchester’s biggest night ‘Take The Whole Cake’ and is lined up for many festivals this summer. Expect house, reggae, soul, dub, hip-hop and much much more from his sets!  (Saturday)

– THE LAKE STAGE -

Situated on the banks of Latitude’s stunning waterfront is The Lake Stage the place to catch the very first glimpse of the next musical talents. With his finger firmly on the pulse, Radio 1’s Huw Stephens gives us his freshest tips curating a programme of diverse and exciting bands who are on the cusp of success. In the past Everything Everything, Bombay Bicycle Club, and Pulled Apart by Horses have all graced the stage and since enjoyed mainstream success making Latitude the perfect place to catch rising stars.

Clock Opera, a London electronic-based four-piece, have been expertly remixing notable indie and rock acts for some time. Having chopped the fine work of bands like Everything Everything into something just as exhilarating, their own work sees a similarly ‘kitchen sink’ attitude. Instruments, non-instruments and anything else that makes a sound is sampled, sliced and glued into a scintillating web of sound. With regular BBC 6Music and Radio 1 airplay and single ‘Belongings’ appearing on Moshi Moshi, Clock Opera’s dicing could well bring fans of the ethereal beat to their knees. (Sunday)

Sacremento’s Julie Ann Bee, known by her nom de plume Sea Of Bees, is a multi-instrumentalist in the Sparklehorse vein. Fixed to the roots of folk and country while gleefully expressing and absorbing other sounds and ideas, the core is in her soulful voice. Taking intensely personal subject matter and reeling into the songs like a lovelorn busker, her modest but expansive sounds leave aches in hearts and lumps in throats, whilst somehow never getting over sentimental. With an echoed and spacious sound, her articulate emoting is as mesmerising as it is direct. Her debut album ‘Songs For The Ravens’ will show you the way. (Sunday)

– DJs –

As the sun goes down and the moon lights the night sky, The Lake Stage transforms into the best club around. Featuring amazing DJs playing top tunes on Friday, Saturday and Sunday night – the party never stops at Latitude Festival.

Goldierocks spends her time invading festivals and after-parties all over the world with her unique blend of festival chic, bassy remix and wonky electro. Recently making her debut presenting on Radio 1, somehow she also finds time to host her weekly international radio show The Selector, the best in new British music to over 30 countries from Indie to Grime, Dubstep to Disco, Rock to Soul and everything in-between. Anything goes and it’s the same for her theatrical DJ sets, expect Jack Daniels, expect stage diving, expect the unexpected. (Friday)

Ever the trendsetters and tastemakers, Moshi Moshi have long been a fixture on the independent music scene with the label catering for singles and releases for future stars. From Bloc Party and Hot Chip to, more recently, Florence + The Machine and Clock Opera, their finger isn’t just on the pulse, they practically are. Therefore a DJ set from the Moshi Moshi crew is always full of dancefloor-fillers, future anthems and classic, half-forgotten indie stalwarts. Guaranteed to not only make your evening continue seamlessly into the night but to feather your musical nest with a whole host of new tunes. (Saturday)

You Instead premiers at T in the Park

Revellers arriving onsite on Thursday (7th July) will be treated to an exclusive one-off screening at 9pm in the campsite cinema in Sunset Strip ahead of the movie’s national cinema release in September 2011.

You Instead

You Instead is a free-wheeling, rock ‘n’ roll comedy set against an unforgettable lost weekend at a music festival; filled with lust, betrayal, and a hundred thousand people partying to the greatest music in the world. The film, which is tipped to be one of this year’s hottest independent films, will no doubt get festival-goers hyped up for the weekend ahead which will feature music from Arctic Monkeys, Coldplay, Foo Fighters, The Strokes, Beyoncé and Pulp to name a few.

Luke Treadaway (Brothers of the HeadClash of the Titans) stars as strutting indie star Adam, one half of globally successful duo The Make. Arriving at T in the Park for his latest gig, Adam finds himself accidentally handcuffed to Morello, played by Natalia Tena (Mrs. Henderson Presents, Harry Potter), lead singer for all girl punk band The Dirty Pinks. With no key in sight, the feuding pair must get through the weekend as best they can, delivering not one but two performances whilst having to placate a jealous girlfriend, an angry boyfriend and a lunatic manager; all in a weekend they will never forget.

The film was shot in July 2010 at T in the Park in Kinross-shire, Scotland.  Cast, crew and extras all stayed onsite for the entire duration of filming, camping in a backstage enclosure.
The film’s Director, David Mackenzie (Perfect Sense, Hallam Foe, Young Adam), comments: “After shooting the film entirely at last year’s T in the Park, it was only natural that we brought it back to where it was born, one year on. The fans – as well as the festival – are what made the project, so I’m delighted they will get to see the finished film before anyone else!”
Geoff Ellis, Festival Director of T in the Park, adds: “We’re really thrilled that we’re able to share You Instead exclusively with fans at this year’s T in the Park, just one year after it was filmed at the festival.

“The film really captures the spirit of what T in the Park is about, and we can’t wait to get our 18th year underway with this exciting preview screening.”

All T in the Park festival-goers can be amongst the first people in the country to see You Instead in the festival campsite at 10pm on Thursday, 7th July.  Follow You Instead on Facebook at www.facebook.com/YouInstead.  To keep up-to-date with the latest T in the Park info and for regular updates from the T Lady, go to www.tinthepark.com.

The Big Feastival Review – Saturday 2nd July

The weather man was kind to London yet again as another glorious day awaited us for the inaugural Jamie Oliver presents The Big Feastival.  The Big Feastival brings together an extravaganza of food and music with some of the UK’s top restaurants and artists playing over the weekend.
The Big Feastival
Taking place in Clapham Common, we arrived with empty bellies around 2pm to sample and indulge in some of the top quality food that was on offer and to sit down and listen to some great music.  With food tokens in hand we immediately turned our attention to the numerous food stalls.  Starting at top British food institution Canteen, we sampled the delightful Fish and Chips, the fish was crispy and tasty and the chips were fried to perfection.
Looking around, The Big Feastival was a family affair, many had turned out with their young children who were kept busy with attractions like the Little Dudes Den and the fairground rides.  With the sun shining, most had taken advantage of the lovely Clapham Common grounds by sitting on the grass with food and drinks in hand whilst enjoying the music and comedy acts that played on the main stage and the bandstage.
Chicken Tikka Pie
With my stomach still hungry, I headed over to Peter Gordon and Michael McGrath’s The Providores, they were serving up a scrumptious NZ Lamb Sandwich.  The lamb was melt in your mouth material and was accompanied with a minted yogurt sauce and tomato chutney all brought together on a sourdough ciabatta.
Jamie Oliver
The Big Kitchen was the location of the live cooking element of The Big Feastival, we managed to catch Sophie Grigson cooking up a delightful indian treat.  However the crowd were waiting for the man himself, Jamie Oliver, to take the to the live kitchen stage, with so many packing the tent, we managed to make it to the outskirts where we could just see and hear the show.  Joined by one of the Two Greedy Italians and Jonny Vaughn, the three of them cooked up a storm!
Between our group we sampled the majority of food that was on show, the Pit Smoked Pulled Pork Shoulder and Slaw from Jamie Oliver’s Barbecoa was my favourite dish of the day!  Smoked for hours on end, the pork was amazingly tender, it was cooked to perfection and I could have had 2 more portions of it.
I also sampled the Pork Pibil Tacos from award winning restaurant group Wahaca, they were just the treat to finish my day off.
Musically, Saturday’s The Big Feastival was topped off by brilliant sets from the Mystery Jets and The Charlatans.  Jamie Oliver even managed a good boogie whilst The Charlatans were playing, however for me, today was all about good friends, good music and even better food.
The Charlatans
With proceeds of the event going to The Prince’s Trust and The Jamie Oliver Foundation, Jamie Oliver seems to have found a winning formula combining what is some of the best food from the top restaurants in London with some of the UK’s best entertainers.  I look forward to sampling more delights on its return next year!

Please note that there will be NO festival access from Knebworth Train Station. You must use Stevenage station.

It is STRONGLY recommended that return train tickets are bought in advance. Stevenage is on a very busy commuter line and has narrow platforms so it will not be possible for festival goers to gain access to the station till after 9.30am once the commuter traffic has died down. The free shuttle service will start at 9.15am from the site but you may need to wait
for a short while at the station before accessing the platforms.

It is therefore recommended that trains are booked for after 10am to ensure you can meet your travel plans. Please plan to arrive at the station around an hour before your scheduled train. There will be a queuing system in place at the station designed to get those who have booked advance tickets onto the platform in time to catch their train so look carefully at the signs and make sure you are in the right queue.

BY ROAD
There are two entrances to the site which are accessed via junction 7 and 8 of the A1(M) motorway, 10 miles north of the M25. Signage on the A1(M) will direct you to the appropriate entrance. If using Sat Nav systems, please use the postcode SG1 2AX to direct you till you pick up the road signage.
Ample parking is available on site.

Wireless Festival – Friday 1st July 2011

As we headed out of the office to Wireless, the sun was beaming down on London and we expected a massive crowd as today was sold out with an estimated 63,000 in attendance.

Walking into Hyde Park, you could feel the buzz and excitment of festival goers in the air as we were ready to see headliners Black Eyed Peas who were joined by Plan B, Tinie Tempah, Bruno Mars, David Guetta, Far East Movement and more.

Walking out to the main stage, we catch the end of Example, already there is a good crowd building around the main stage, directly opposite is the Unwind Stage where Jodie Connor is about to take to the small but intimate stage.
Bruno Mars
We take point at the main stage to check out Bruno Mars, his cool, funky, jazzy, pop sound is translated amazingly to the live arena. Complete with live band, Bruno Mars is one act that is much better live than on album. He is very much alive on the stage, and brings alot of character to his performance, much like his video clips!

Tinie Tempah

Next we head to the Pepsi Max stage to check out Far East Movement, an L.A. based  electo pop / hiphop group whose number one single “Like a G6” pushed them into the mainstream. The tent was packed out as the lads went through their hits “Like a G6” and “O.M.G”. They brought a raw energy to the stage and played a flawless set.

Back over to the main stage, we get set to catch one of the UK’s biggest artists of the moment, Tinie Tempah.  Fresh from Glastonbury
success, we expected another stormer of a live show. However some production issues meant that Tinie’s microphone was not working properly and we failed to hear some of the lryics he was delivering in the start of his performance. However once fixed, Tinie was back to his live best, managing to get most of the crowd down on their knees whilst building up to his latest single with Swedish House Mafia “Miami 2 Ibiza”.

David Guetta was headlining the Pepsi Max stage and brought an arsenal of music with him.  Djing to a crowd that bloated outside of the arena, he delivered big tune after big tune, perfect to dance to whilst the sun was still shining over Hyde Park. We even got a special appearance from Black Eyed Peas beauty, Fergie who arrived onto the stage to sing on “Geting Over You”.
Wireless Festival

The crowds flocked to the main stage for the Friday night headliners Black Eyed Peas.  Having to follow in the footsteps of previous headliners such as Jay-Z and Kayne West, BEP were in top form! Dressed in silver space suits they instantly got the crowd rocking with “Rock Your Body”. As the sun began to set on the Hyde Park the production came into effect, huge lighting rigs, led screens, led suits and helmets began to glow and enforced that BEP were going to close Friday’s Wireless in style. Will.I.Am’s DJ set took the crowd on a journey through classic dance hits, whilst Fergie had her spot on the stage during her solo of “Big Girls Don’t Cry”. BEP performed tunes from their back catalogue including “Where is the Love”, “Don’t Phunk with my Heart”, “Shut Up”, “My Humps” and more!
Black Eyed Peas

Fittingly the Black Eyed Peas brought Wireless to a dancing close with hits “Boom Boom Pow” and “I Gotta Feeling”. They set the presendent for the rest of the weekend which sees the Chemical Brothers and Pulp headling Saturday and Sunday respectively.
