Melt! Festival, which takes place from 19 to 21 July, announces the first wave of acts for 2013 with 60+ artists to perform on the peninsula of Ferropolis close to Gräfenhainichen.
It's been almost seven years since The Knife have released their last album Silent Shout. Now the Swedish siblings are back with Shaking The Habitual and an exclusive performance at Melt! 2013. After having sold out their European tour within hours, the electro duo will play their only festival show in Ferropolis.
On their debut album, An Awesome Wave, Alt-J bring together dubstep, hip hop and folk influences, a bold mixture which won them the prestigious Mercury Prize. This summer, we'll be witness to yet another smashing live performance. With his laid back post-dubstep arrangements, James Blake is also keen on approaching genres open-minded and with a little twist. At Melt! Festival, he'll present us with his sophomore album. In addition, the New York-based rapper Azealia Banks will perform her only show in Germany in Ferropolis this year. Further acts to appear at Melt! for the first time are Solomun and Flying Lotus.
For the fourth time, Modeselektor will curate the Melt!Selektor Stage. As a very special highlight, Modeselektor will get behind the decks together with Apparat to give us a glimpse of the new Moderat album. Also taking over our stage at the Melt! beach are Mount Kimbie, Blawan and Pariah's new live project Karenn, Jimmy Edgar and Machinedrum live under the guise of Jets, Ben UFO, Otto Von Schirach, Fantastic Mr Fox, Bambounou, Sinkane, Mykki Blanco and Zebra Katz. Further acts will be announced soon.
Woodkid, Kettcar, Django Django, Owen Pallett (formerly known as Final Fantasy),Everything Everything and Daughter are amongst the first indie acts to get on stage at Melt! Festival.
Again, our line-up not only features Melt! residents but up and coming hotshots as well. Alongside promising newcomers such as Churches, Disclosure, King Krule or Laing. DJ Koze will be part of the bill with his new solo album, while SBTRKT will get behind the DJ booth this time. Henrik Schwarz & Band is also part of the line-up as well as Todd Terje &Lindstrøm. Henrik Schwarz and Âme will conquer the stage with a new live project under the moniker of Schwarzmann.
The Berlin-based electro label Get Physical will take over the Sleepless Floor with a label special and the following acts: M.A.N.D.Y., Wankelmut, Catz 'N Dogz, Andhim and Smash TV (live).
Of course, it wouldn't be a proper festival without Ellen Allien's Bpitch crew ringing in the final hours at our nonstop stage with a Bpitch Special. We're also glad to have the Crosstown Rebels with us, celebrating 10 years of label history with a 'Rebel Rave' at the Big Wheel Stage: Damian Lazarus, Art Department, Jamie Jones, and further special guests are scheduled to appear.
Further high-class acts for this year's Melt! Festival, which will feature more than 120 acts on 6 stages, will be announced shortly.

British icon, Cliff Richard, will be this year’s headline artist and will sing in the stunning open-air court of King Henry VIII’s Palace for two nights – Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd June. Having established himself as one of Europe’s authentic rock ‘n’ roll stars and selling a staggering 250 million records to date, Cliff will delight the audience with his spectacular live performance of best loved classics and new songs
Following a sensational sell out performance last year, which marked their UK comeback after a 20 year break, the Festival is delighted to welcome back Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, one of America’s most successful pop and rock group from the 1960s. The group will give fans another chance to hear many of theirclassic hits such as Big Girls Don’t Cry, Walk Like A Man, Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You, Bye, Bye, Baby (Baby Goodbye) and December 1963 (Oh What A Night)
The UK’s best ever selling classical artist Russell Watson will also be performing with his orchestra. Having won four Classical BRITS, Russell will perform many of his well-known songs including those from ‘Anthems’, his most recent album release. Russell’s special guests will be Amore, the stunning classical vocal quartet. Commenting on his appearance at the Festival, Russell said, “I'm delighted to be taking part in the Hampton Court Palace Festival this summer. I'm thoroughly looking forward to performing alongside some truly great artists and musical talent."
We are also delighted to host the incredible Lisa Stansfield for her only London date this year. A multi Brit Award winner, Lisa has sold over 20 million records throughout her career. Best known for her smash hits All Around the World, So Natural and All Woman, the audience will be treated to her greatest hits. Lisa said: "After having such a great time last year in the UK with my three sold out shows, I'm so excited to be touring once again and I cannot wait to perform at Hampton Court Palace this June!"
Bringing 50s glamour and rock ‘n’ roll to the Festival is the hugely popular singer Imelda May. With a triple platinum album under her belt and gold certified album Mayhem, Imelda will wow the audience with her powerful vocal.
Incredible blues rock duo, Joe Bonamassa and Beth Hart, will make their Festival debut this year. One of the world’s greatest guitar players and a child prodigy, Joe Bonamassa was opening shows for blues icon B.B. King by the age of 12. Singer-songwriter Beth Hart is known for her powerful vocals and soul-baring performances. Beth and Joe will feature songs from their highly anticipated second album due to be released in May, alongside selections from their critically acclaimed debut duo album, Don’t Explain. Beth and Joe are very excited by their new project and plan to bring their individual virtuoso strengths to a grand live stage in the beautiful setting of Hampton Court Palace.
We are also thrilled that the internationally acclaimed Björn Again, will bring a night of ABBA fun to theFestival. Designed as a rocked-up, light-hearted show, it rapidly achieved world-wide cult status and was acknowledged for single-handedly initiating the ABBA revival which brought about ABBA Gold, Muriel’s Wedding and MAMMA MIA! The enduring appeal of ABBA is reflected in the ongoing success of the Björn Again show, having amassed 5,000 performances in 71 countries in 25 years. The show was created and founded in 1988 in Melbourne by Australian director and musician Rod Stephen. Recently acknowledged by ABBA’s blonde vocalist Agnetha Fältskog, Rod aims to keep his typically Australian production at the top and will continue for as long as people want to hear the much-loved ABBA repertoire performed the Björn Again way.
Now a veteran of the Hampton Court Palace Festival, Jools Holland will be one of the highlights of our summer concerts. His passion for music has made him a doyen of the music scene, and he was awarded an OBE in 2003 for his services to the British music industry. Jools’ phenomenal success has seen him sell millions of records throughout the course of his career and he holds the unique status of performing with musicians who have achieved success in every decade of the 20th Century. Special guests include the fantastic former Squeeze drummer Gilson Lavis, Roland Gift (the voice of Fine Young Cannibals) and Ruby Turner who together withJools and his fantastic Rhythm & Blues Orchestra will raise the roof of the magnificent Palace once again.
The Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra also returns to the Festival for another spectacular classicalevening. The Orchestra will perform scores from the mainstream masters of classical music: Handel’s Music for the Royal Fireworks to Tchaikovsky’s waltz; from Swan Lake to Ravel’s Bolero. Young and upcoming trumpeter Melissa Venema from the Netherlands will perform the ever popular classic, Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto. There will be a long interval so that Festival-goers can enjoy their picnics and Champagne in the Palace Gardens as the sun sets. A fireworks display will provide a visual fanfare to round off this superb evening
In addition to the music, Hampton Court Palace Festival is renowned for creating a truly unforgettable experience. Artists perform in the historic main courtyard of the magnificent Tudor Palace providing an intimate atmosphere for an audience of 3,000. Corporate hospitality is available in the State Apartments and Festival-goers can also arrive early (doors open at 5pm) to enjoy picnics, courtesy of Jamie Oliver’s Fabulous Feasts, on the Palace Garden lawn or underneath a luxury waterside gazebo before the show.
New artists confirmed for Field Day 2013: Amateur Best/ Connan Mockasin/ Dark Dark Dark/ Egyptian Hip Hop/ John Cooper Clarke/ Kurt Vile/ Mount Kimbie/ Palma Violets/ Savages/ Seth Troxler/ Shed/ Solange/ Splashh/ Stubborn Heart/ Wild Nothing
Previously announced: Animal Collective/ Bat For Lashes/ Charlie Boyer & The Voyeurs/ Chvrches/ Daphni/ Daughter/ Disclosure/ Django Django/ Do Make Say Think/ Emeralds/ Everything Everything/ Four Tet/ Francois & The Atlas Mountains/ F**ked Up/ Ginger Baker Jazz Confusion/ Hessle Audio DJs: Ben UFO, Pangaea, Pearson Sound/ How To Dress Well/ Jacques Greene/ James Yorkston/ Julio Bashmore/ Karenn/ Mulatu Astatke/ Thomas Mapfumo/ Tim Burgess/ TNGHT/ Virals/ Vondelpark plus more artists to be announced
Last October Solange released her single ‘Losing You’ – an infectious, mid-tempo break-up anthem evocative of early 80’s R&B that became an instant viral success, with ‘Sleep in the Park’ featuring Of Montreal’s Kevin Barnes on the B-side. She thenreleased her highly anticipated seven-track EP ’True’. Headed by ‘Losing You’, it is released via Terrible, the label co-owned by Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear and entirely co-written and produced by Solange and Field Day veteran Dev Hynes aka BloodOrange. ‘True’ has further set Solange apart – one we truly look forward to seeing at Field Day 2013.
Also confirmed is the winner of Resident Advisor’s 2012 DJ Poll, Seth Troxler, whose impressive career started in Detroit back in 2002 at the young age of 16. Since then, Seth has gone to ignite the world of house and techno with a constant barrage of vocal jams, winning over legions of fans for the singularity of his vision and inimitable bravado, which have made him one of the most captivating characters of modern dance music.
We are honoured to have performance poet John Cooper Clarke at Field Day this year. His biting, satirical verse delivered in his rapid-fire performance style hasresonated since the punk movement of the late 70s. After touring with most of punk’s seminal and ground breaking bands including the Sex Pistols, The Clash, Buzzcocks, The Fall, and Elvis Costello, to name but a few, he began to draw large crowds in his own right. Joy Division were proud to open for John on numerous occasions and New Order later supported him on their first joint Australian tour. One of Britain’s best loved and most important poets and performers, John is as vital now as he was then.
Also confirmed is Kurt Vile, who, once compared to Leonard Cohen, Tom Petty and Animal Collective in the same review brings to mind anything from Suicide to My Bloody Valentine and Nick Drake. He pieces together these disparate elements so seamlessly and unpretentiously that such reference points are rendered pointless by the singularity of his sound, reflected in his latest brilliant and critically acclaimedalbum ‘Smoke Ring For My Halo’ (Matador 2011).
Meanwhile, Virginia dream pop act Wild Nothing will bring their heavily 80’s rooted indie-pop of gentle harmonies, orchestrated synths and wandering voices that make up front man Jack Tatum’s ‘ideal world’ of pop music, portrait in their just-released, exceptional second album ‘Nocturne’.
Topping the Ones To Watch lists of 2013 are the ferocious four-piece Savages. With their highly awaited debut album still to be released in 2013, Savages' songs aim to remind us that music can still be straight to the point, efficient and exciting, while their live shows are truly electrifying. Also topping the lists for 2013 are Palma Violets, whose first single ‘Best of Friends’ was just voted NME’s song of the year and whose highly anticipated debut album ‘180’ is to be released next month. Often compared to The Libertines, 2013 will be a big year for this band and we are excited to have them at Field Day.
We are thrilled to welcome the unstoppable Mount Kimbie back to Field Day. With familiar beats underneath otherworldly productions, the electronic duo is arguably responsible for the birth of the term ‘post-dubstep’. Their debut album and live shows have garnered a cult status; recently signed to Warp, their second album isimminent. Expect a packed tent of devotees dancing to Mount Kimbie’s mesh of left field electronics, post-rock textures and bass weight – and new tracks to be aired for the first time at Field Day 2013!
Meanwhile Shed, the Berlin-based producer, and firm believer in the power of techno, will be the living example of how to reinvent oneself again and again within the boundaries of electronic music. Perfectly shown in his latest album ‘The Killer’ (2012), he melts and merges rough and demanding dance floor skeletons with shockingly detailed melodies, harmonic structures, irresistible hooks and airy arrangements, creating a never-ending climax of the groove.
Psychedelic pop artist Connan Mockasin has the kind of deliciously off-kilter and gloriously idiosyncratic worldview that rapidly proves addictive. Having toured with Charlotte Gainsbourg as her live band, as well as with Radiohead last November, and with new material planned for 2013, we can’t wait to have him on our stage.
After their debut EP ‘Some Reptiles Grew Wings’ produced by no other than Hudson Mohawke back in 2009 and two years of lying low, Egyptian Hip Hop finally released their anticipated debut album ‘Good Don’t Sleep’ last October. Be ready to be taken to a sonic world of their own, setting indie, prog-rock and 80s pop in between hypnotically pulsing rhythms and Elizabeth Fraser’s spine-tinglingly moving vocals which, at times, evoke the lush beauty of Cocteau Twins.
Also on board are Minneapolis band Dark Dark Dark. Fans of Beirut and Grizzly Bear will find plenty to appreciate in this chamber-folk quintet, with their spectral interludes, moments of muted drama, and backing vocals that sound like a Balkan choir, portrait in their beautiful new album ‘Who Needs Who’ (Supply & Demand/ Melodic, 2012).
With their just released eponymous debut, the duo Stubborn Heart emotes heartbreak over broken beats and dark, atmospheric space – a stunning and surprisingly poignant electronic soul record. Recently compared to The xx, SBTRKT and Four Tet, expect a clean, ghostly production coalescing with mournful vocals to positively ooze a bruised melancholy.
Also confirmed is Amateur Best, Joe Flory’s project that emerged from the ashes ofhis genius synth-pop proposal Primary 1, who will take us to the surreal world of his debut album/comic book ‘No Thrills’, out next month on Double Denim, featuring a collaboration with piano virtuoso Chilly Gonzales. Meanwhile, SPLASHH will showcase their myriad of floating, fuzz-laden grunge pop tunes, a result of leaving the beaches of the South Pacific behind and coming together to record in a small bedroom in Hackney.
Entering its seventh year, Field Day will be returning to the leafy green surroundings of Victoria Park with its unique formula of pioneering line-up coupled with village fete mentality, all in the heart of East London. Field Day will take place over the Bank Holiday weekend on Saturday 25th May.
Hosted by forward-thinking promoters Eat Your Own Ears, Bugged Out!, BleeD/ Lanzarote and proudly partnering with The i Paper, The Quietus, FACT Magazine, Last FM, Resident Advisor, The Line of Best Fit, Abeano, Dummy Magazine andStool Pigeon, Field Day is a festival that has become synonymous with imaginative and progressive bills hosting the likes of Franz Ferdinand, SBTRKT, Afrocubism, Grimes and Django Django last summer; 2013 is certainly shaping up to be no exception to this rule.
As with years gone by, Field Day will be providing ample entertainment for those looking for respite from the music in the Village Mentality area on The Village Green. Expect traditional side stalls inspired by country pastimes and weird and wonderful fete games, from classic tug of war, sack races and egg and spoon race to more unexpected and fantastic ones like tea bag tossing and the world famous winkle picking contest.
The excellent website Caught By The River, home to excellent writing by first class contributors on music, nature, ale and…fishing, has carved itself a unique place on the web since its beginnings in 2007 and will be hosting a fine area at Field Day 2013

With Kraftwerk currently wowing audiences and critics alike with their run of hugely in-demand shows at Tate Modern (which have gained a slew of 5-star reviews), festival organisers DF Concerts and founding partner Tennent’s Lager are thrilled to announce that they have joined the line-up for T in the Park’s 20th year, which takes place over 12th – 14th July.
The band remain at the cutting edge of contemporary music after over 40 years of musical experimentation. Celebrated for their ground-breaking albums including Autobahn, Trans-Europe Express, Radio-Activity, and the most recent Tour de France, their live shows are renowned for their exhilarating fusion of music, art and visuals. From their legendary Kling Klang studio in Düsseldorf, they arguably created the soundtrack for the digital age with their innovative looping techniques and computerised, robotic rhythms. Kraftwerk will make a welcome return to the UK forT in the Park’s 20th year in what will be their first ever performance at the festival, accompanied by the same stunning 3D visuals, animation and projections that have been wowing audiences at Tate Modern.
Geoff Ellis, Festival Director, said:“Kraftwerk are a truly seminal band. Their revolutionary sound altered the face of contemporary music, and paved the way for so many artists across so many musical genres. Autobahn was the first album I ever acquired and I witnessed them perform it live in its entirety at the Tate Modern last Wednesday when I was in the audience for the first of their run of shows there. They were absolutely amazing and I was blown away – it really was a life-affirming night. They are a massively influential group and an incredible live act, and we are hugely excited to welcome Kraftwerk to T in the Park for the first time this July, in what will be a very special moment in our 20th year celebrations.”
George Kyle, Head of Sponsorship at Tennent’s Lager, said: “Since we joined forces with DF Concerts as the founding partner of T in the Park in 1994, we’ve seen some the world’s finest artists perform at the festival. The festival continues to attract the very best in musical talent, and I’m sure Kraftwerk will treat fans to a memorable performance. Anticipation is already building for what is going to be a tremendous weekend and we’re very much looking forward to the 20th year event.”
Organisers are set to unveil yet more top acts for the T20th bill next week, with Kraftwerk joining a glittering array of already announced artists including headliners Mumford & Sons, Rihannaand The Killers, plus Emeli Sandé, The Script, Two Door Cinema Club, alt-J, Paloma Faith, Jake Bugg, Of Monsters and Men and Azealia Banks.
Accompanied by a strong visual spectacle, Kraftwerk will serve a setting of their music from all the past decades. The concert will include a unique 3D visualization, for which the audience will be handed out 20,000 pairs of 3D glasses. These sold-out and critically acclaimed 3D shows have already amazed London’s Tate Modern and New York’s Museum of Modern Art.
It’s not only electronic music legends that represent what Flow is about: emerging innovators Disclosure will also be presenting their forthcoming debut album to Flow’s expectant crowds. Additionally, Nu-Disco frontliners Tensnake from Germany,Todd Terje from Norway and the queen of deep house Maya Jane Coles are now added to the electronic strand of this exciting mishmash of musical talent.
The acts previously announced to perform at Flow include The Knife, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Azealia Banks, Of Monsters & Men, Solange, Blixa Bargeld, Goat, Jupiter & Okwess International, Ebo Taylor & the Odapajan, Mykki Blanco, Karenn as well as the Finnish acts Sarah Kivi & Non-Orchestra and Karri Koira.
Ahoy shipmates! Bestival has only gone and ruddy done it again, a stellar line-up announcement in the middle of the dreary sludge ridden grey early days of the year, just to remind you that there’s a couple of days in September that will make everything ok. Don’t forget the theme is HMS Bestival, interpret it as you wish…
Despite some e-whingery from non-Bestivalites that the headliners aren’t to their exacting (and often hipster ‘I only like bands that no-one’s heard about) tastes, you can’t deny the pure musical royalty of the acts they’ve managed to grab. Glitter-bombing, Willy-Wonka sunglasses wearing, mad croon machine, Rocket Man Sir Elton John is to be the festival’s Sunday showcase – the absolute essence of everything Bestival, flashy, sing-along and a little bit cheesy.
Sippin’ Gin and Juice, Saturday will welcome hip hop heavyweight The D-O-double-G or Snoop Lion as he prefers to be holla’d at these days… (It’s the whole Puff Daddy, Puffy, P.Diddy crap all over again right?). Not an obvious choice to run alongside Elton, but that is probably the most perfect reason and call curator Rob Da Bank and crew could have made. That is completely the point of Bestival, and if you don’t get it, you’re wrong. However, Snoop does have a tendency to cancel shows so we’ll keep our fingers crossed.
Let us not forget that the bill isn’t headliner central at Bestival, oh no, the line up is rife with talent both retro and blossoming. Where else can you kick a bit of kung-fu to the Wu-Tang Clan, then pop off for a smackerel of Sinead O’Connor? Truly, I kid thee not. Joined by the likes of M.I.A., Franz Ferdinand, The Flaming Lips (hopefully with their crowd-walking zorbing ball which looks far too fun for one man to have), Bombay Bicycle Club and Bastille, there’s enough here to keep pretty much anyone happy. Even a hardcore black metal find would find a smile in there somewhere.
Bestival stalwarts and purveyors of inappropriateness The Cuban Brothers, will be there to help you seaworthy scallywags to ‘release the kraken’ and Belle & Sebastian’s soft tones will provide the mellow side. Comically, there will also be Fleetwood Bac and a Daft Punk tribute night, for anyone who kept an eye on the festival rumours this year you’ll know why that’s giggleworthy. With DJ’s Carl Cox, Seth Troxler and DJ Yoda, as well as Scroobius Pip bringing the Satin Lizard Lounge, and a whole host of other Bestival site things to see and do, from cinemas, to roller disco, to crafts, there is always far too much to do. Head over to the Bestival website to check it all out, ya scurvy dogs! Arrr!
Also confirmed for the tasty Nozstock smorgasbord of music are: The Dub Pistols, The Strypes, Andy C and MC GQ, Wilkinson, Loadstar, Loko, MC Visionobi, The Beat, Bhi Bhiman, The Computers, Ava Leigh and Velvet Stream. The Hidden Valley is landscaped around a ramshackle Tudor farmhouse. It sits behind the main ORCHARD STAGE and is set at the foot of a natural arena on the side of the gently sloping valley. Alongside the farmhouse is the GARDEN STAGE, which provides a more eclectic line up, turning electronic by sundown whilst converted cowshed the CUBICLES pushes out sub-thumping bass and dubstep this year hosted on Saturday by the legendary drum 'n bass label RAM Records. With further music (including a new electro-swing stage), theatre, comedy stages and tents dotted around the site Nozstock offers a cornucopia of wonders to explore
This year’s theme is Wild Wild West, so dust off your cowboy hats, fringed moccasins, saloon skirts and ropey John Wayne impressions for what promises to be the best Nozstock yet.
Line up
In a career spanning 40 years, Chas & Dave are without doubt one of Britain’s longest running and most cherished acts. Chas Hodges (piano, vocals, banjo, guitars) and Dave Peacock (bass guitar, vocals, banjo, guitars) began playing together way back in 1972. With hits like Gertcha, Rabbit, The Sideboard Song and Margate, they created a sound that was uniquely British and rockin' to boot. And it’s those songs that have ensured that the boys have continued to tour for over five decades to audiences across the world, enchanted by their East End charm and witty song-writing
Their contribution to popular culture was recognised recently by BBC Four with an hour-long documentary detailing their career and influence. The critically acclaimed show was based around the 2011 tour and featured input from Jools Holland, Phill Jupitus, and Pete Doherty to name a few. Also just announced are festival favourites The Dub Pistols (fronted by the enigmatic Barry Ashworth), teenage buzz band The Strypes (tipped by NME as one of the most exciting new bands of 2013), The Beat, Benny Page, The Computers and Ava Leigh plus the legendary RAM Records takeover of The Cubicles dance arena.
