MATTHEW DEARYou could throw around generous descriptors and any number of genre-locking terms including electronic pop, minimal house and acid techno, but you’d still fail to get to the centre of Matthew Dear. Having produced music under aliases such as False, Jabberjaw and Audion, the Texan has earned international status by packing out venues across the world and releasing universally praised original productions. After meeting ‘Ghostly’ founder Sam Valenti at a house party in the late 90s, Dear eventually produced the A-Side for the labels first 12” release, ‘Hands Up for Detroit’. Since then, Dear issued his pop-infused debut album ‘Leave Luck to Heaven’ and its counterpart ‘Backstroke’, which caught mainstream attention, as well as a number of other releases under his club-oriented pseudonyms, including the omnipresent, chart-topping ‘Mouth to Mouth’ as Audion. Further accomplishments include requests from the Postal Service and Hot Chip for his remix skills and incessant touring with constantly evolving DJ sets and live performances. And with the release of his sophomore full-length, ‘Asa Breed’ and his live tour as Matthew Dear’s Big Hands, it’s clear that Dear has no intention of slowing down anytime soon. We are delighted to welcome Matthew Dear to our very special SW-MORE after party line-up alongside Layo & Bushwacka and sensational German duo M.A.N.D.Y. Taking place at the world famous Ministry of Sound, all roads lead to SW-MORE when the curtain comes down on another fantastic South West Four!

Interview with The Japanese Popstars
As we witness the end of The Japanese Popstars beat banging set at Tiësto Live in Victoria Park (30th July 2010), we get a quick call up to say they are doing a few interviews.
Who are The Japanese Popstars you might ask, they are an electronic act from Northern Ireland made up of Declan McLaughlin, Gary Curran, and Gareth Donoghue.
We are directed behind the main stage to the dressing room area to see The Japanese Popstars having a laugh with their crew and management. Sitting down on a table in the park we have an informal chat to the lads from Northern Ireland about anything and everything Japanese Popstar!
SFG: “So guys, how did you come up with the name The Japanese Popstars?”
TJP: “Well Irish Popstars just didn’t sound good so we went around the world map and settled on Japan”
SFG: “You guys have recently finished work on a new album, when is it due out?”
TJP: “We are not sure when the new album is due out, it is up to the record label and management.”
SFG: “You guys are doing the festival rounds this year, what is your current schedule like?”
TJP: “Well we played in Ibiza last night, we have had no sleep and just finished playing here, we are back to Ireland for a few days then heading back to Ibiza next week.”
SFG: “Any plans to head down south to Ozzie and New Zealand?”
TJP: ”We could be in Ozzie / New Zealand next year”
SFG: “I understand you guys are signed to Gung Ho records?”
TJP: “We are now signed to Virgin/EMI Records, we were previosuly with Gung Ho”
SFG: “Coming from New Zealand you must also know Greg Churchill and Luke Walker who are signed to Gung Ho Records?”
TJP: “Luke is a great friend of ours, he has just remixed our new single, and Greg has just sent us his new tune, Oh yeah by the way, Luke works for Sega and hooks us up with games!”
SFG: “What is on the horizon for The Japanese Popstars?”
TJP: “We are working on more remixes this year and will be taking a break from the studio before we kill each other.”
SFG: “Its been a priviledge chatting to you guys, rest up and see ya soon!”
The Summer Festival Guide would like to thank the awesome guys from The Japanese Popstars for taking time out to chat to us, we look forward to their latest album release, look out for it in the near future!
Tiësto Live @ Victoria Park
Friday 30th July 2010 saw Tiësto return to Victoria Park in London for his second live show. With a supporting lineup that included The Japanese Popstars, Avicii, and Pendulum on the main stage the afternoon was set to be full of musical madness.
We arrived to catch the last part of The Japanese Popstars, the trio from Northern Ireland lived up to their expectations playing what they call "big room, cool as f**k electronic music built for festivals and staduims", See our interview with the lads here.
Next to take the helm was Avicii, Tiësto's hand picked supporting artist for his current tour. For those that dont know much about Avicii he is a Swedish DJ and producer who has come up through the ranks of Laidback Luke's online forum. Winner of Pete Tongs Fast Trax, Avicii has taken the industry by storm, DJing all over the world and working with some of the best producers in the game. As the crowds slowly started to gather in the main stage area, Avicii kept their feet moving with a mix of house, electro, and trance infused beats. Dropping the massive Swedish House Mafia single One brought huge applause from the crowd.
Pendulum were set to take to the main stage next and as the stage was setup for their arrival you could feel the excitement in the atmosphere. The Australian rock / drum and bass band have recently released their new album "Immersion" and with two other albums behind them the live set was never going be a let down. By far one of the best live drum and bass acts at the moment their stage presence is immediately felt with MC Ben Mount taking centre stage. Ben's energy levels alone are enough to get any crowd going crazy and as soon as the bass kicks in the crowd are jumping and moshing in all directions. Ben creates a riot as he jumps off stage and mounts security fence and gets in amongst the punters. As a first time witness of seeing Pendulum live, I was very impressed with the amount of energy they put into the live set. If you havent yet seen them live I would highly recommend that you catch them on their Arena Tour of the UK in December 2010. A brilliant production setup completes the live experience.

Dutch DJ legend Tiësto's arrival is highly anticipated and as his intro kicks off, the crowd begin chanting "Tiësto, Tiësto". With thousands of punters piling into the main area to see what they came here for, Tiësto walks out to massive applause. On tour with his 4th studio album Kaleidoscope, which features an array of musicians inculding Nelly Furtado, Kele Okereke (from the Bloc Party), and Calvin Harris to name a few, Tiësto was here to showcase his new tracks.
As always Tiësto is in the party mood, complete with a huge grin on his face and his arms in the air. The crowd seem to take his lead and as we walk through the masses of fans dancing to one of the worlds most in demand DJ's, we see all types of party people, some with light-sabers, a mexican hat crew and a huge number fans in the traditional dutch orange coloured t-shirts. One thing is consistent though, the smiles on everyone's faces as they jump up and down to Tiësto's beats.
Tiësto never fails in the production department, his show is kitted out with a large backdrop LED Screen and awesome pyrotechnics. As the night begins to fall the lighting really comes into its own. The sound system is loud enough to ensure that you can feel it anywhere from the park! Halfway through his set, Tiësto gets onto the mic and yells out to the crowd that he is about to take us back through his back catalogue and treats us to the likes of "Lethal Industry", "Silence", "Flight 643", "Love Comes Again", "Traffic", "Adagio for Strings" and more. His new tracks also get a great response, especially the Sneaky Sound System collaboration "I Will Be Here". Tiësto shows once again why he is the only DJ ever to host his own show in Victoria Park and we look forward to seeing him agin next year!

Some are not fit for publishing, but one of my favourites is my manager falling asleep in the booth (in Canada) while I was playing. He was perched on a stool, actually leaning against a 5000 watt stack, snoring.

Green Man 2010 to premiere LEONARD COHEN film

So, thought we’d stop announcing new exciting stuff once the festival sold out? Think again.
Green Man is proud to present the UK première of a film that nearly never was. Almost four decades after it was first made, this is the strange tale of Bird On A Wire – a remarkably candid documentary captured across all 20 concerts of Leonard Cohen’s 1972 European Tour.
We’re rolling out the Green Carpet and converting the “Far Out Tent,” into a 2000 capacity cinema on Thursday night, as Wales and the Green Man host the UK première of this astonishing portrait of an uncompromising artist in his prime – as it was meant to be seen and heard in all it’s undiminished glory.
Tony Palmer Director and Editor “The film is precious to me and the venue for its first public screening vitally important, so when someone like Fiona asked me to première Bird on a Wire at Green Man and explained that it would be shown in a large circus tent in the beautiful welsh mountains, how could I possibly resist.”
A hitherto unseen insight into the world of one of music’s genuine geniuses, this near-mythical piece of musical history was hijacked and hacked up upon its completion.
Reluctantly lost from director Tony Palmer’s hands, artistic wrangling and massive editorial cuts mean Bird On A Wire has never been seen as its makers intended.
Now, having languished in the vaults for 38 years, the original film has been salvaged, restored and pieced back together through a huge labour of love (and just a little luck) – and you can see it first at Green Man.
Director Tony Palmer, who has previously made films with The Beatles, Cream, Jimi Hendrix and Frank Zappa, said: “Maybe what is valuable about the film today is not only that it contains 17 of Cohen’s greatest songs performed by him in his prime, it has a real feel for the rough and tumble and difficulties of life on the road.
“I know of few other films where the backstage confusion comes so vividly to life, with Cohen apparently taking no notice whatsoever of the camera. I doubt if today we would be allowed such access.
“The songs are haunting, unforgettably so. The poetry is extraordinary. But so is the man. Looking back after 38 years, my admiration for Cohen remains undiminished. The original film was made with love – I hope that quality once again shines through the restored film.”
Bird On A Wire promises to be a real treat not just for Cohen’s fans, but for anyone with even a passing interest in music, poetry and cinema.
Producer Stephen Machat, whose late father the famous industry stalwart Marty Machat managed the star until his death in 1988, added: “This film is the culmination of an epic journey. My father cajoled Leonard into documenting his tour even though Leonard didn’t want to. But my father could see what it would mean. At the time, I had no idea why he was interested in doing this. But on viewing the beautiful film that Tony has put together, I see it and feel it.”
This UK exclusive will take place on the Thursday night of this year’s festival – an extra special treat for all you Holiday Campers and early arrivals. What better way to raise the curtain on what promises to be our best-ever festival?
You can read the full incredible story of how Bird On A Wire was rescued from the cutting room floor in an exclusive in-depth feature in this year’s festival programme written by Tony Palmer himself.
This is Green Man after all – so expect the unexpected.
