Parklife Weekender SOLD OUT!

Following a speedy sell out in its inaugural year in 2010 Parklife responded by doubling to a two-day event for 2011, becoming the Parklife Weekender. The festival’s second year has proved every bit as popular and is now sold out. A strictly limited number of 250 weekend tickets will be released and only available at the Parklife Weekender’s official pre-party, headlined by Caribou and taking place on Saturday 4th June at The Apollo.

As well as the 90+ bands, DJs and performers already announced, the Parklife Weekender is laying on a heady mix of live art and performance of all shapes and sizes. Skilfully auditioning hopefuls for cabaret and busking stages featuring at this year’s Parklife Weekender, ANTICX bring a host of performers to the table. The wildly diverse offering programmed by the Manchester-based creative collective makes up an all new feature of the Parklife Weekender – the Roshambo show.
ANTIXC cabaret stage sees dance troupes, live music, comedy, spoken word and theatre. Amongst a glittering cast of talent are Manchester Metropolitan University’s Pop & Lock society, funk group, the Effektuators and all-female theatre company from the Contact Theatre, the Eggs Collective. Also appearing are improvisational dance collective Mixed Movement featuring Baba Isreal, folk-pop outfit My First Tooth, comedy sketch troupe The Animals of Butter Bridge, Urban Music Artist, Bugsy Malone and many more.
The Busker’s stage offers up acoustic sounds from the likes of The Happy Soul and Manchester’s harmonious five-piece She Choir. Performances will include Schmucks Theatre’s “Artist Unknown” and rising comedy collective FunBox. Spoken word comes in the form of Chris Jam, speak easy, feminist performance poet Anna Percy and Freestlye Footballer Ollie Hayes demonstrates sporting and physical feats. The Roshambo Area stage also lays on DJs of their very own all weekend including Knockout Ned’s Social Club.

Just when you thought things couldn’t get more bizarre, Parklife Weekender unveils The Hidden Wombs and The Tunnels of Love. In homage to the procreation process, don your sperm costume and head through giant passage ways to discover hidden parts of the festival site.  Somewhat more dainty will be The Rose Garden, featuring a large scale fabric art installation from Donna Jeves and the Elephant Collective will this year provide a tranquil oasis. From whether picking up new shades or the obligatory bonkers festival hat, the Parklife Market will be trading all weekend satisfying everyone’s festival purchase needs. Promising a caravan full of other-worldly wonders and curiosities is Cabinet Fatalia and for the more flamboyant festival goer is the boutique fancy dress emporium known as Spangle Box. Also popping up across the park will be giant novelty furniture plus a number of charity and campaign stalls.

Making a welcome return will be the Mad Ferret’s Garden, housing a bigger and better Truly Tremendous Treehouse stage. Here the crowd will find Manchester’s finest silent disco DJ talent. Audience members looking for a breather can head to Veg Out and do just that – reclining on giant vegetable seating in an area hosted by Electronic club night promoters Audio Farm.

A feast for the eyes comes in the form of live art and installations curated by Richard Birdseed. The young Manchester-based illustrator, designer and artist brings together a number of names who will be making live street art and graffiti as well as many other creative happenings across the weekend.

Around the rest of the Parklife Weekender can be found Evolve Manchester Parkour and Circus Skills, The Up Stage, The Crazy Carnival Tube Stage, The Four Live Lounges, The  Cone Stage, The Earthlings & Aliens Stages, Obertrons Toenail Turrets and The Tundenium Domes.

New Finnish acts in the program are Regina and Yona & Orkesteri Liikkuvat Pilvet, both of whom are set to showcase their new material at Flow.

More mindblowing marvels for Bestival

Rob da Bank Says: “It’s rare that I’m to be found not banging on about music, bands and tunes 24 hours a day but just for a minute I must pause to tell you about the amazing non-music business happening at Bestival 2011. From our very own new structures the Swamp Shack with its voodoo vibes to the Roller Disco to burn off the pies, from infamous food blogger MsMarmitelover’s Underground Restaurant to your very own humungous Free Sports Park with everything from BMX to Inline Skating and Parkour lessons…plus the Wishing Tree is expanding with the world’s smallest pub , an incredible array of cabaret and a bloomin’ great circus and so much more…Bestival is not getting bigger this year and we’re nearly sold out so get your (roller) skates on!”

The Wishing Tree, under the spell of its cultish hosts The Siblinghood of the Adjoined Orbs, has dramatically grown in size over the past year. Thankfully though there’s a wood cutters yard nearby to process all the timber from the tree, ready for some crazy construction. And just up the way is the old saw mill, built to deal with the largest logs in the world from the wishing tree and to power the largest band saw in the world. Thirsty work, we think you’ll agree, so the mini bar within the tree has been transformed into The Wood Cutters Arms, the smallest pub in the world.

Just as the cheering dies down from the last band on the Main Stage, you turn around to see a precession of huge, mysterious white figures floating down through the crowds. Twisted yet majestic, bewitching and ethereal, your eyes are not deceiving you. This is Herbert’s Dream, a magical show from French company Quidams, set to make you gaze in awe at this luminous and stunning night parade. For the first time, Bestival will be giving you the romance of a fully alfresco ballroom.  Salsa with the sun on your skin, feel a late summer breeze in your hair as you shimmy through a cha cha.  Framed by twinkling festoon lights as night falls you can lose yourself in a tango under the stars.

Pushing the boundaries of festi-food possibilities MsMarmitelover AKA Kerstin Rodgers will be at Bestival with The Underground Restaurant, an achingly cool, supper club from the foodies foodie with three sittings a day –lunch, dinner and a midnight feast. Simply delicious!

We are stupendously excited about a brand new area to Bestival; The Roller Disco. And when we say Roller Disco, we’re not joking, we mean the mother of all roller discos.  With music blasting from a giant-sized  jukebox stage that will feature the hottest DJs in the world,  you’ve got no choice but to get involved as the skates are vintage and best of all they’re free  to hire, or if someone else’s wheels doesn’t quite float yer boat, you can get your own high-tops pimped with sick trucks.  There’s plenty of room for revellers without wheels too and either way you’re going to want to be there.  Promise.

Proving you can never spoil a good walk, we’ve got Crazy Golf with the best crazy golf course in the country.  Fact.  And if the Plus Fours action isn’t quite enough to rock your world you can run away with the circus as No Fit State Circus presents Parklife, featuring a company of 10 international circus artists and musicians who will emerge from their crazy caravan to dazzle you daily with public taster workshops, creative exchanges, public rehearsals, happenings and impromptu high skill guerrilla performances, all accompanied by the ever popular NoFitState band

Keeping on the active tip, we are playing host to the Free Sports Park in its inaugural year at Bestival. The UK’s biggest touring sports park, you’ll be dumbfounding by their amazing displays including Mountain Board Freestyleand Big Air, Mountain Bike Freestyle Jumping, Mountain Bike Trials, BMX, Inline, Skate and Parkour and if you’ve got your own gear they’ll even let you have a crack too, but be warned it’s not for the faint-hearted.

We are uncommonly excited to announce that this year Bestival will feature the only Wall of Death act worth seeing.  Death defying and deaf inducing. Hell’s Riders are due to put on a real spectacle that is as compelling as it is amazing. Rock n Roll in centrifugal form!

Amongst all the excitement, there’s always time for some intricate beauty so make sure you check The Secret Emporium. With the hottest and most talented milliners, jewellers, fashion designers and artists this side of Jupiter displaying hand picked goodies for your delectation. You have to make sure you bring your pocket money, kids.

And let’s not forget the all new Bestival Block Party on Saturday afternoon. Taking inspiration from the Blocos or individual sections of Brazil’s Rio carnival, the Block Party will be a parade divided up into a number of blocks, each one with its own name, identity and uniform designed and funded by you and your block mates! Watch this space for the Block names and ways to enter in the coming weeks… The traditional Fancy Dress Parade for everybody on Saturday will this year start at the far side of the campsite with the floats picking up people through the campsites as it goes. Join in your finery or just stand and watch in amazement as the Rock Star, Pop Stars and Divas of your imagination parade by, topped and tailed by Lost and Found and a marching band plus the resident Bestival dressing up box will be stacked full of vintage jump suits and sequins, antique theatre costumes and hand-made nonsense for all.

There will also be two more brand new attractions; The Ambient Forest, hidden deep in the woods will have spoken word programmed by Scroobius Pip, the David Lynch Foundation presenting meditation workshops and leftfield musical offerings and the best ambient and horizontal DJs in the world including Tom Middleton, Chris Coco, Phil Mison and Pete Gooding. And, new to the Wishing Tree field, The Swamp Shack; a ramshackle Louisiana bayou juke, straight from the pages of a Southern Gothic fairytale. Plus craziness abounds at theCabaret Tent with the Boom Boom ClubGay BingoWho’s Talent is it Anyway and Marisa Carnesky’s Wunder Kabinet show. There will also be a whole host more merriment including the Blackout Gigs featuring live performances by acclaimed acts taking place in complete darkness, audiophile action with Classic Album Sundays and you can mix science with art, music and play with renegade researchers Guerilla Science in the Tomorrow’s World field. There will be the return of some old favourites too, including Bestival’s ‘Relaxation, Massage and Healing sanctuary’ Heavenly Healing and foot soaks, facials, hair washing and styling in the Pamper Lounge to keep you feeling fresh.  And a perennial Bestival highlight with Come Dancing classes and competitions in the Spiegal Tent during the daytime every day, so you can learn some amazing dance moves from our Residential Specialist Dancing Teachers: The Jiving Lindy Hoppers!

If you want to make sure you can join us at Robin Hill Country Park for the eighth Bestival you’re going to have to be quick. Our main ticket agent Ticketline has now sold out so you’ll have to get your tickets from either the ferry companies; Red Funnelwww.redfunnel.co.uk/bestival  / 0844 844 9988, Wightlinkwww.wightlink.co.uk/bestival / 0871 376 1000 or for Coach travel including your ferry and a ticket you can get tickets from Big Green Coach:www.biggreencoach.co.uk/bestival they’re nearly all gone, so as the man like da Bank says get your skates on!

There’s still one more headliner to announce and tons of far out fun and frolics to unveil so keep on checkingwww.bestival.net for all the up to the minute news.

The complete lineup for Slam Tent at T in the Park

Joining an exceptional Slam Tent line up that already includes Leftfield (live), Felix da Housecat, Bloody Beetroots Death Crew 77 and Vitalic (live) are Dave Clarke, Tiga, Chris Liebing, DJ Sneak, Hudson Mohawke (live), James Holden, Craig Richards, The Black Dog and Mark Henning.

The ‘Baron Of Techno’ Dave Clarke will follow Leftfield (live) on Saturday night to bring the first day’s proceedings to a thundering close. He’s known for his forward thinking vision with sets that swoop along the cutting blade of techno and electro backed up by a seasoned bag of digital DJ tricks. This is a man who loves playing techno to the masses, and where better to belt it out than in the Slam Tent.

Over a decade after Tiga launched his career on a revolutionary Montreal radio station he’s still making some of the finest dance music around and is credited with producing some of the most iconic tracks of our generation including his cover version of Corey Hart’s ‘Sunglasses at Night’ and his remix of Felix da Housecat’s ‘Madame Hollywood’. His ‘My Name Is Tiga’ podcasts are an immersive feast for the senses and his Saturday live set at Balado is sure to be the same.

The sound of Chris Liebing has continuously evolved throughout his mammoth career, keeping up with the digital movement to a point where his current setup offers him practically endless possibilities.  An Ibiza stalwart, Chris played the early days of ‘Cocoon Ibiza’ and cohosted the island’s biggest techno fiesta ‘Meganite’ with Mauro Picotto.  Chris is a founding member of the German techno scene in Berlin, the beating heart of the world’s electronic movement – with over 300,000 subscribers to his CLR podcasts, Chris is a tastemaker, a visionary, and a welcome addition to Sunday’s cutting edge Slam Tent line up.

One of dance music’s true pioneers, DJ Sneak has the passion and drive to keep house music alive. DJ Sneak has helped shape the course of dance music since the early 90s; his early music influencing the likes of Daft Punk, Basement Jaxx and Armand Van Helden.  His signature sounds – funky filtered disco-influenced house and tough, jacking beats – have revolutionised and redefined house music for well over 15 years.  Sneak continues to be at the top of his game: non stop beat bumpin’ sets are a one of a kind experience and one not to miss at T in the Parkon Sunday.

The Slam Tent is a T in the Park essential for the discerning music lover with a taste for the finest beats around. Over the years the Slam Tent has hosted juggernaut sets from the likes of Daft Punk, Orbital, Fatboy Slim, Derrick May, Wu-Tang Clan and Laurent Garnier to name just a few of the performance titans to set foot in the big blue tent.  With an atmosphere second to none and mind blowing acts a plenty – 2011’s line up is guaranteed to keep the tent’s big blue walls throbbing way into the night.

Nero Interview – Rockness 2011

Are you excited to be coming to Scotland to play at RockNess?
Yes, can’t wait as we’ve heard the setting is amazing so it’s going to be a wicked experience.

Do you think the music scene differs depending on which part of the country you’re in, and how does this affect your sets?
You definitely notice a lot of energy up in Scotland, but we’re really lucky that we get an up for it crowd where ever we go.

Congratulations on your recent songs ‘Me & You’ and ‘Guilt’ which have done extremely well this year, do you think that Dub-step is here to stay?
Genres always come and go but dubstep is evolving in a really positive way so it will always be around in some shape or form.

Dub-step is now becoming more mainstream, does this affect how you produce your music?
It doesn’t affect us at all, we didn’t make ‘Me & You’ to get on the radio, but they liked it, so we’re just going to keep making music we like and hope the success carries on.

What do you think will be the ‘Summer 2011’ song?
There are so many contenders this year but I think a lot of producers are yet to pull out their big guns for the festival season yet.

Have you got any surprises in store for the Rockness crowd?
There are going to be some un heard tracks from our forthcoming album “Welcome Reality” in our sets, as well as our own VIP edits

Who are your inspirations for your music?
Our inspirations are extremely wide but I suppose Daft Punk are the ones that we constantly look to and reference.

Any tips to be a ‘Pro-festival goer’?
Erm…Take your own bathroom?

What are your plans for the rest of the year?
We’re working on getting our album totally finished, it’s due out on the 1st August so time is ticking. We’re also working at getting our live show on tour in October.

You are supporting deadmau5 in Victoria Park – anything special planned for the London show?
We’re headlining the tent in Victoria Park so are going to be preparing some special edits to make sure it’s a memorable set.

Interview with Example – Rockness 2011

What was it like working with the likes of Chase and Status and Subfocus on your 2010 album ‘Won’t Go Quietly’?
Yeh pretty inspiring. I’m a huge fan of their work. I think their names attached to my project opened some doors for me. People like Skream and Faithless were fans of Kickstarts and as a result I have them producing on my new album

Dub-Step is becoming more main-stream, how do you feel about this?
It’s a good thing. It was always going to happen. Same thing happened with DnB, Jungle and Garage. The underground side of things will still be there. It’s music at the end of the day. There are no rules. Art will always be bastardised whether purists like it or not

What can we expect from your set at RockNess 2011?
Very loud bass and synths, flashy lights and lots of bouncing

What is the best thing about performing at a festival rather than a venue?
Atmosphere is always special. And the UK has some amazing outdoor locations for live music. Loch Ness being one of them

What is in store for us on your upcoming album?
Darkness. It’s called Playing In The Shadows. It’s all about partying and relationships. Nearly al dubstep and trance with a few ballads in the middle to give people’s ears a rest

What surprises do you have in store for RockNess?
I might perform a whole song in a Scottish accent

Did you enjoy your tour around the country with Faithless?
I learnt a lot. I know what I have to aim for

Any tips to be a ‘Pro-festival goer’?
Clean socks. Clean pants. Wet wipes. Sun tan lotion.

How do you think the music industry has changed since you first started making music?
The way people buy and listen to music has changed. When I started there was no twitter, no myspace, no facebook, no youtube and I released on vinyl

What advice would you give to fellow ‘Rocknessers’ about festivals?
I heard Rockness is a bit mental. Maybe wear a helmet

What do you think will be the ‘Summer 2011’ song?
Changed The Way You Kiss Me by Example

Who is your favourite artist/DJ at the moment?
Tyler The Creator

The Great Escape 2011 Review

The atmosphere was amazing and addictive during the day it was relaxing and chilled with the few venues in the town down all the little winding streets, full of street performers and shops selling all sorts of weird and wonderful things. The venues were spread all over Brighton so you could get a different atmosphere from the different venues. Including the Pavilion Theatre which is a nice pub turned into a venue, to Digital which is a club with amazing banging base. In the evening it came alive on the seafront with venues and bars, the place lit up with people drinking and having a good time.

Day One: I got there late Thursday evening and went to pick up my pass. It was already very busy you could hear bands coming out of all the different venues.  I was already thinking in my mind which bands I was going to see.  I had a plan mapped out but it got turned upside down when I got my pass as I walked down to the sea-front and it turned out that

frank turner

was the place to be, so I didn’t leave for the rest of the night.  There were crowds of people outside the bars and venues enjoying themselves and socialising.  Armed with my wristband, camera pass and anticipation, I went into my first venue to see the band Fight Like Apes. They are a very energetic band that liked to jump about and use the stage to its maximum advantage. They had a large fan base that enjoyed it and joined in with the bands enthusiasm. After that I went down to see Example at the Concorde. It wasn’t too busy but the people that did decide to make the walk down the other end of the seafront were not disappointed. Example sang all his hits including Unorthodox and Won’t Go Quietly and even some new material.  Example was dripping sweat from jumping back and forth around the stage!  I walked back down to the Coalition on the front where I caught Frank Turner, who turned out to be one of my highlights of the weekend. He came out with just his guitar and a smile and wowed the crowd with his acoustic sound and the joy he had from playing his music. He sung hits from his album such as Still Believe and Pass It Along.  Definitely one to watch out for!

Day 2: I woke up all ready and excited in my hotel room, by the looks of it everyone else was already drinking and getting into the festival spirit. I took a walk down one of the main streets in the town before the bands started and checked out some of the street performers. Then I made my way down to Above Audio which was a little pub/ bar on the seafront where I listened to a few bands. The Jezabels stood out for me. They are an Aussie 4 piece band with a rich indie sound very enjoyable to watch with great stage presents. I walked down to Life and in the tiny unique venue I caught Mishima, a Spanish indie pop band, they were addictive to watch with songs in both English and there native Catalan. In such a small venue you felt you were in your own little show that no one else new about.

vision of trees

For the next few hours we just chilled out. I spoke to some of the festival goers who seemed to be making the most of the bars and venues.  They all seemed to be in high spirits and enjoyed being down the seaside. There was a range of ages from teenagers to the more mature all having an awesome time. As the evening grew the next lot of bands started.  I started out at the Brighton Coalition which was a large bar/music venue under the arches on the sea front.  After seeing a few bands i came across Handsome Furs, a great band with lots of energy very exciting to watch. At one point the lead singer ended up in the crowd. The crowd loved this band and the excitement they brought to the venue with their fresh dark sounds. I walked back down to Life, the tiny venue with a great atmosphere. I got to see Visions of Trees that were amazing!  The lead vocalist's voice was gripping with their electronic sound.  I took a stroll down to the Corn Exchange in the town and caught a glimpse of Katy B, and the venue was very busy.  It was what you expect, she’s an amazing and talented artist and is going to go far with her dub step and drum and bass style of music.  She sung hits such as On a Mission, Perfect Stranger and came on for an encore of Lights On. The atmosphere in the Corn Exchange was big with everyone excited to see the next big thing.

Seekea
Day 3: We started at the Relentless Bar where I ended up catching Seekae on the outside stage. Such a talented group of people pushing out there dance tunes. I also saw them later that day in the Digital venue which is obviously made for a band like this, the bass was unbelievable, definitely one to watch out for in the future. A bit later on that day I saw Benjamin Francis Leftwich who with just his guitar was amazing to watch the line was huge to get in to see him and I’m not surprised. He is very talented, the crowd loved him, and was singing along. And to top of my weekend I popped in to see Foster The People and White Denim. I was not disappointed with what I choose to end my weekend with, they just blew everyone away. After a packed fun filled weekend I got ready to go home. I really enjoyed my weekend, it’s great to come across bands you would never normally choose to see. Overall The Great Escape was a great weekend with great weather and great bands.
