T in the Park adds Patrick Wolf, Alice Gold and more!

Patrick WolfThe quirky and cultured Patrick Wolf is hailed by many as Britain’s most underrated pop star. The eccentric singer songwriter mixes electronica with classical instruments to create a unique brand of techno inspired power pop. Due to release his fifth album ‘Lupercalia’ next week, he’s a seasoned live performer who charms and fascinates audiences around the UK gaining him a cult following and solid credentials.  T in the Parkers will be amongst the first to hear material from his new album and are certain to catch a performance to remember.

Kentish Town siblings Kitty, Daisy & Lewis play more or less any instruments they can lay their hands on, jumping around on stage from banjos, to ukuleles, accordions, xylophones and trombones.  They’ve had worldwide success with sold out tours and have opened for Coldplay, Razorlight and Jools Holland among others.  Recently released second album “Smoking in Heaven” is receiving yet more critical acclaim and T in the Parkers can judge for themselves in July.

Californian rock and roll heavyweights Rival Sons are known for bluesy soul vocals, memorable guitar riffs and deep, pounding grooves with flourishes of reckless abandon during live sets.  With debut album ‘Pressure and Time’ set to be released next month the band are making a stop at Balado on their ‘Epitaph’ world tour – get ready Scotland for the swagger that is Rival Sons.

There aren’t many new musicians who can harness the elemental rock’n’roll soul of both Ike and Tina and Jimi and Janis. Alice Gold though, comes close. Gold by name and gold by nature, there’s an immense warmth in Alice’s voice which will radiate through the fields of Balado.

Fresh from reforming this year and releasing second album ‘Elettorama’, Glasgow band Thrum are and heading straight to Balado for a much anticipated comeback.  Vocalist Monica Queen worked with Belle & Sebastian and Shane MacGowan during the band’s 6 year hiatus and is now bringing back the band’s indie-rock sound.

Seattle based indie post-punk band Romance will be making the trip to Scotland bringing a sound that is at once familiar and strikingly fresh. Their music blends dark, catchy and epic songs with an intelligent and unique ideology, one for the thinkers at T in the Park.

Molotov Jukebox are self-professed pioneers of GypStep with the band citing gypsy, ska, funk, dubstep, flamenco, house, electro, pop, reggae, and soul as their influences.  With lead singer Natalia Tena having recently starred in “You Instead” the feature length movie shot on site at last year’s T in the Park, she certainly knows her way around Balado.

Tartan clad tribe Clanadonia will kick off proceedings on the Main Stage to an almighty thunderous sound. The drum thumping, stage pounding traditional Scottish music is the perfect way to welcome in an epic weekend of spine tingling musical moments.

Traditional Scottish music will continue throughout the weekend as the Ceilidh Tent returns for 2011. T in the Parkers of all musical persuasions can’t resist a fling round the tent at some point during the festival – the infectious energy of the Ceilidh Tent in full flow will see even the hippest festival goers enter for a lively session of elbow swinging and foot stomping!

Shambala joins forces with Tree Aid

Every year the Sahara desert grows by 270,000 square km – that’s an area the size of New Zealand stripped of trees every single year. Despite the creeping sand more than 350million people live on the southern fringes of this desert in a daily battle to survive. This is where TREE AID works, and why Shambala Festival-goers have chosen to join TREE AID’s Tree Revolution, to help plant and protect 1 million trees in 2011.

Each year Shambala reduces even more of the environmental impact of their small and lively festival, including offering their visitors the chance to offset the carbon they create by travelling to and from the festival. This year, TREE AID was one of three organisations put to the carbon vote – and 47% of punters chose to join TREE AID’s Tree Revolution by donating £1907 to help rural families in Africa’s drylands to plant and protect trees.

A fun-filled four days of creativity, music, theatre and cabaret all topped off with mouth watering food from around the globe, Shambala also has an eco focus. Having recently been the first ever festival to win the maximum 3 stars in the Industry Green Award, Shambala is officially the UK’s greenest festival, and since 2010 Shambala have reduced their carbon footprint per person by 50%, making them the ideal festival to team up with TREE AID to help some of the poorest people in the world cope with to the increasing effects of climate change.

Especially because for African families living in the drylands, trees do more than just absorb carbon. Trees mean shade from the searing 40ºC heat of the West African sun. Trees mean food for families when other crops fail. Trees mean a poor woman can lift her family out of poverty by selling tree products like shea butter, dried mango and honey.  Trees mean families can stay together, that children can go to school and that teenagers are not driven to find dangerous work in the city slums.

Ultimately, trees mean life. For families in Africa, as well as for families here in the UK.

This year’s Shambala Festival is once again set to be full of unexpected surprises, with ticket holders being asked to vote for the bands they want to play over the weekend, plus the legendary Saturday night fancy dress carnival – all 99% powered by solar, wind and recycled veggie oil! You can find out more about TREE AID’s Tree Revolution at the Festival, or at www.treerevolution.org.uk.

It costs £1 for a family to plant a tree in Africa. Join the Tree Revolution today: text TREES to 81400 to donate £3 and plant 3 trees.

Sziget Festival lineup almost complete

One of the most successful and coolest electronic music acts of the past twenty years, Prodigy is playing on the Main Stage of Sziget Festival again. No need to tell you anything else, a great show is guaranteed, so just make sure you arrive in time to get your place in the crowd. Another new feature of the Main Stage line-up is Kate Nash, a charismatic and already well-known singer from Great Britain. Kate is proud owner of a BRIT music award, which says a lot of her wonderful skills. And still talking about the Main Stage program: Kaiser Chiefs are coming to play the new songs of their freshly released album. The Chiefs are growing to become an emblematic band of present times, gaining inspiration from the punk and new wave movement of the turn of the seventies and eighties, and without doubt they are one of the most authentic and well-received indie rock bands of the United Kingdom.

The program of the Sziget Main Stage is now complete and you can view the detailed list of performers at the program section of szigetfestival.com.

Last but not least, another great piece of news: the most colourful music act of Australia, Empire of the Sun is playing at Sziget Party Arena, presenting their spectacular show, inspired by science-fiction and sometimes similar to a fashion-gala. But it’s surely not just the visuals: make sure you sing along with them while listening to hits like Walking on a Dream, or We’re the People.

Sziget is ready for you, so make sure you are ready for Sziget. Forgot something? Sure, you will need your tickets. More information: www.szigetfestival.com.

More comedy acts announced for Green Man Festival

Grab yourself a cider in our magnificent marquee of merriment as some of the best stand-ups in the business take the mike from 7pm to 2am daily!

There’s so more to Green Man than the fantastic music – we’ve got three nights of brilliant comedy lined-up from an amazing array of acts including:

Tom Wrigglesworth – the national have-a-go-hero who rescued a little old lady from the jaws of Virgin train bureaucracy, only to be arrested for begging. The resulting sell-out show bagged him a prestigious Chortle award and his own BBC Radio 4 series.

Tony Law - an Edinburgh Festival favourite whose self-styled “acid-casualty” approach to stand-up is as laid-back as it is hilarious. The Canadian’s scorching jokes and incisive wit made him the perfect choice to support Stewart Lee on his recent UK tour.

Trevor Lock – among the most intelligent, original and exciting acts in comedy today. His ability to improvise whole routines with cleverly crafted wordplay and stream of consciousness ad-libbing has gained him a worldwide cult following.

Alistair Barrie – one of the most in-demand MCs on the international circuit. He hosted and helped organise Bye George, the comedians farewell to George W. Bush at London’s Southbank Centre, alongside Rory Bremner, Mark Thomas and Marcus Brigstocke.

Gary Delaney – a razor sharp comedian widely regarded as being the most quotable stand-ups on the circuit. His high-volume, high quality one-liners have left audiences reeling, from rowdy clubs to bizarre corporate gigs at the Labour Party Conference.
Ben Clark and Tom Parry – the two tallest members of acclaimed sketch group Pappy’s. Their unique brand of silly comedy has won rave reviews at Edinburgh, a Chortle award for Best Sketch Act and slots on BBC Radio 4 and Channel 4.

PLUS sets from Mike Wozniak, Helen Arney, Maeve Higgins, Mark Olver, Bec Hill, Tom Bell, Terry Saunders and many, many more yet to be announced.

Parklife Weekender 2011 Review

From Piccadilly station, across the city centre, and over to Fallowfield, a buzz of anticipation spread across town, as Manchester geared up for the return of Parklife Festival. Only in its second year, Parklife has a growing reputation for a party that you won’t soon forget. If waking up in a soggy sleeping bag isn’t your style, then this urban festival offers the best of both worlds; a weekend crammed with great music, without the pain of figuring out how to set up a tent. Relatively small, with only seven venues over two days, Parklife does all it can to pack as much as possible into that short time.  From the relentless beats of the Chibuku tent on Saturday, to the best sounds coming out of Manchester in the Now Wave venue on Sunday, not to mention, the massive acts lighting up the main stage; Parklife may look small, but it’s one big weekend.

Parklife

Following the crowds pouring into the park on Saturday afternoon, we were welcomed by Everything Everything, giving it their all up on the main stage, to an already pumped up crowd.  As we explored the rest of the park, walking past the Chibuku tent, whose heavy bass already had the place packed out, we came across the secret garden; fabric art installations by Donna Jevens and the Elephant collective, as well as bath tubs to sit in and watch as spoken word acts, and buskers perform on their own stage.  This slightly surreal, dreamscape installation was alive with people enjoying a rest from the unyielding party that continued on just around the corner. If that wasn’t already enough to spark our curiosity, past the spoken word, circus acts and tunnels of love, we came across the Truly Treemendous Treehouse Stage, which housed silent disco DJ’s in a tree, as well as a dance floor and some giant vegetable seating for everyone else to enjoy.

Back to the main stage, and Beardyman had replaced Everything Everything, enchanting crowds with his almost unbelievable beat boxing skills, cross over to the Now Wave tent to catch Jamie XX start off his set, and as the audience throw themselves into the rhythms, it was hard to believe that it was only six o’clock. Katy B’s clear vocals cut across the park, and drew the crowd back to watch her perform tracks like Broken Record and Perfect Stranger, with a completely different feel to her recorded work.  Live band, coupled with a small brass section gave the set a more soulful feel than her latest album allowed for.

Katy B

With the sun setting over the festival main stage, and the carnival atmosphere continuing, before we knew it, debut festival headliners Two Door Cinema Club, began their electrifying set.  Playing tracks from their album, Tourist History, as well as new materiel with an infectious beat, they left the crowd screaming for more. As the throng poured out of the park and into numerous after parties, we were left to wonder, how could tomorrow top a night like this?

Day two broke with the sun rising over the city, but soon gave way to a more traditional UK festival climate. The rain transformed green grass pathways into mud planes, and we rejoiced as mudslides and wrestling commenced and the multitude turned from an array of colour to slimy brown. It was inevitable really, and nothing was going to get in the way of a great line up for day two.

In the Juicy tent, rammed all the way to the entrance, one of our Parklife highlights was Riot Jazz, a ten piece brass band, who pumped out a combination of punchy jazz, hip-hop, and funk beats, in true style.  Making it impossible for anyone to be standing still, as tune after high energy tune blasted out in ecstasy before the rain drenched audience. The energy was astounding and just as we thought the crowd couldn’t dance any longer Broke n English took over to prove us wrong. Torn between staying to watch the set, and catching Labrinth’s debut festival appearance, we pulled ourselves away to head to the main stage, but before making it there, we crossed paths with a samba band and crowds dancing behind them.

Parklife

The rain had stopped, but the mud was rising with Labrinth’s opening song to his first ever festival crowd. And after a bass heavy set from Skream & Benga, two thirds of legendary magnetic man, the air was heavy with anticipation as the crowds waited expectantly for day two main stage headliners, Chase & Status.  With pounding rhythms, and heavy bass, soaring melodies, and awesome visuals, not one person was standing still as the main stage lit up for the final act of the year. And though sweat poured down their mud caked faces, the audience were swept away by a performance that kept getting better. Before leaving we popped into Now Wave to find a crowd of dancers falling in love with the crushed harmonies, and catchy melodies of Mystery Jets. And as our tired legs left Platt Field Park for the final time, we couldn’t help but think that Parklife, will only keep getting better.

Parklife
