Continuing its legacy as what the New York Times referred to as a “pilgrimage event on the global techno calendar,” Time Warp today, in partnership with long-term NYC collaborators Teksupport, announced the bill for its return to New York this Fall, following a two year hiatus. its new Brooklyn location will play host to two days of audiovisual technical immersion soundtracked by some of house and techno’s top talent.

Time Warp will showcase a mélange of underground heroes from around the world, including several who’ve become central pillars to the event and its community over its storied 27 year history. Global scene shaper and recent Prada collaborator Richie Hawtin reprises his headlining role—a duty he’s carried on with diligence since Time Warp’s 1995 Mannheim debut. Chilean iconoclast veteran Ricardo Villalobos makes a return as well, this time alongside longtime b2b partner and Tyrant co-founder Craig Richards. Villalobos remains a rare delicacy stateside, but thanks to his deep-rooted ties to the Time Warp and Teksupport families, fans have been able to witness his brilliance twice in New York the past seven years.

Âme, whose Time Warp legacy kicked off in 2007 brings a slice of Berlin house to the party. Second State owners Pan-Pot also represent Berlin, along with Ostgut Ton/Berghain figureheads Ben Klock and Marcel Dettmann for a rare b2b—all three of whom were inducted into the family in 2012. Seth Troxler rounds out the list of historic talents to grace the roster. The political activist, multilabel head, and Lost Souls of Saturn member has been an annual fixture at Time Warp’s flagship Mannheim event since 2011.

Techno always takes center stage at Time Warp New York, with all sides of the spectrum covered by its all-star cast. On the melodic end, Afterlife stalwarts Adriatique are set to bring their expertise to the decks, while virtuoso Stephan Bodzin will bring a full hardware kit to the show. Industrial aficionados will enjoy performances by Paula Temple, Kobosil, and a live showing by Reinier Zonneveld. International superstar Nina Kraviz will serve up her signature high-tempo mix of techno and electro cuts, while KiNK will showcase his impressive penchant for improvisation on his array of keyboards and synths.

Time Warp’s communal ethos extends to the cities it touches, as such, New York talent will be spotlighted with local mainstays DESNA, Avision, Shahar, mink, and O.BEE on display.
Since its 2014 debut in New York, Time Warp has made the city a second home with local impresario Teksupport as its chosen partner. Its 2019 return saw fans gathered from across the nation to celebrate 25 years of Time Warp, which also marked the first large-scale underground dance music event to happen in the Bronx. The results were massive, ushering in a new era for the global brand and a bright chapter for American house and techno enthusiasts. Following a forced two-year break since, fans can expect peak energy for its grand 2021 return.

Teksupport has produced some of New York’s most unique and exciting parties of recent years. They have scoured the city to unearth new locations, throwing parties in submarine factories, navy yards, subterranean ballrooms and industrial warehouses, building a reputation for pairing raw spaces with world-class event production. Their 2021 summer season played a role in reasserting the city’s prominence as an underground dance music mecca, hosting the likes of DJ Tennis, The Martinez Brothers, Sven Väth, Guy Gerber, Dixon, Perel, and more.
Time Warp’s return to New York will follow its prodigal return to Mannheim on October 30 2021 before heading south to its Brazil HQ of São Paulo. Head to their website for more information on their international events and to sign up for tickets.

Declan Mckenna @ Cambridge Junction 23/08/2021

After a long year away from live music it was great to be back at a firm favourite venue of mine, the one and only Cambridge Junction. Performing on Monday 23rd August was 22 year old London Indie singer/songwriter Declan Mckenna. Mckenna was also joined by his support act, Isle Of Wight duo ‘Wet Leg‘. The Cambridge show is the first of the current tour for Declan.

Upon arrival at the venue, the entry queue was literally winding all the way around to the back of the building and as far as the nearby multi storey car park. Ticketholders appeared to be mostly that of a younger generation than myself, in which it made me feel a bit vintage lets say, even though I’ve not hit 30 yet!

Once inside, it was clear to see that the room was filling up fairly quickly. There was plenty of chatting and drinking within the crowd of eagerly awaiting fans as they waited for the first act of the night, which was as mentioned previously, Wet Leg. This duo from the Isle of Wight which includes band members Rhian Teaslade and Hester Chambers. They play in a genre which is known as ‘post punk’ music with guitar riffs and some catchy lyrics. The band recently signed to the record company Domino and released their debut single ‘Chaise Longue’. When on stage, the duo were accompanied with three other members all postioned horizontally at the front of the stage. Their set included several songs such as ‘Wet Dream’,’ Your Mum’, and ‘Chaise Longue’. The audience seemed to really enjoy the music. I can see Wet Leg having a huge following this year.

Once the evening’s support band had finished their set, music then started playing over the speakers the most memorable of which was ‘American Boy’ by Estelle in which everyone automatically started singing out loudly.
By 9pm everyone was geared up ready for Declan to come on stage. At the back was a giant backdrop with a black and white chequered optical illusion style circle. Three sparkling disco balls and a platform with keyboards and drums at the top, also a set of steps to get to them.

When waiting in the photo pit, there were young fans with their phones open on camera apps waiting to get a glimpse of Declan coming onto the stage. The first song performed was ‘Beautiful Faces’ which ended with confetti canons into the crowd. Who doesn’t love a confetti cannon? Declan donned a white polo neck shirt and a black sequin suit, with matching glitter facepaint. Giving us all Elton John style fashion vibes.

During the night he Declan performed an array of his music which included the songs ‘My House’, ‘The Key To Life On Earth’ and ‘Be An Astronaut’. After that there was an encore which then went onto another FIVE songs. The room was lit up with lights glistening and arms waving around. It was great to see fans enjoying music again at a live event venue! If you get the chance to see Declan Mckenna perform live, then honestly don’t waste that chance as he does not dissapoint.

Eric Sharp & Cassandra Violet release Body On My Body via Create Music

Eric Sharp & Cassandra Violet release Body On My Body

Release Drops 20/08 via Create Music Group

Artist(s): Eric Sharp, Cassandra Violet

Title: Body On My Body

Record Label: Create Music Group

Release Date: 20th August 2021

Tracklisting:

1) Body On My Body (Original Mix)

2) Body On My Body (Radio Edit)

3) Body On My Body (Instrumental)

Body On My Body is a song that was born from quarantine. Eric Sharp and Cassandra Violet wrote this together over Zoom, in the lost year that was 2020. They speak to the pain of social isolation, and the deep yearning to be back in the club packed with bodies. The experience of collaborating digitally exacerbated these sentiments, crystallizing them in the finished offering.

The production is inspired by Eric’s DJ gigs in Los Angeles, where he is a resident at the famed Sound Nightclub, along with a myriad of pool parties and warehouse jams where he performs. The club formatted 4 on the floor kick is coupled with chugging percussion, a beefy bass line, and interwoven pluck and synth melodies. Cassandra’s sublime vocal work rides atop it all, with her signature soothing, sexy tones.

Loom Festival Berlin announces Nastia, Thomas Schumacher, Julian Jeweil, Alex Stein, Victor Ruiz, Wehbba LIVE, Anna Reusch and Transcode

Date: Sept 25th

Location: Museumspark Rüdersdorf

Time: 12:00 – 00:00

Tickets: https://loomfest.com/

Facebook // Instagram

Loom Festival is a brand new open-air celebration of techno with a big sound but an intimate feel. It takes place at the historic Museumspark Rüdersdorf on September 25th with 12 hours of non-stop world-class sounds from Nastia, Thomas Schumacher, Julian Jeweil, Alex Stein, Victor Ruiz, Wehbba LIVE, Anna Reusch and Transcode

Loom Festival has been inspired by the European festivals where star-studded techno line-ups meet in the most unusual locations surrounded by nature. They are famous for their mind-blowing production and unforgettable musical experiences and Loom is set to make the same sort of indelible impact this Autumn.

It goes down at the historic Museumspark Rüdersdorf, a vast park with a rich industrial history and a dream location for open-air events. Surrounded by lakes, canals and greenery, this idyllic location just outside the city will be transformed and mix raw and industrial vibes while being in the midst of nature. The party is located next to a Shaft Furnace built in 1871 so has a unique backdrop.

Says Loom’s Founders, “After going to many festivals across Europe over the years, we realized there weren’t many events here in Berlin that focused on putting a lot of big acts together in one package. So we decided to give it a go and we have curated a no-frills, no BS line-up with the industry’s heaviest-hitters from start to finish featuring the best peak time techno artists. The idea is to have the best techno from the moment the gates open until the last track is played. Headliners, smiles and non-stop dancing from start to finish – we cannot wait to see you on the dance floor.”

That lineup features Wehbba who will be debuting his new live show for the first time anywhere in Germany, as well as world-class DJs like Ukrainian powerhouse Nastia, German mainstay Thomas Schumacher, and the ever-excellent Julian Jeweil, Alex Stein, Victor Ruiz, Anna Reusch and Transcode.

Confirmed artists: Nastia, Thomas Schumacher, Julian Jeweil, Alex Stein, Victor Ruiz, Wehbba LIVE, Anna Reusch & Transcode.

Boardmasters 2021 – Review

After a two year absence, Cornwall saw the Boardmasters festival return in style. Set at the stunning location of Watergate Bay in Newquay, over 50,000 people descended to the coast for a mix of sun, surf and superb music.

On Friday, Foals took the main stage by force with their headline slot. Playing their biggest hits, including Mountain at my Gates, What Went Down, My Number and finishing with singer Yannis Philippakis joining the crowd for a thrilling finale of What Went Down and Two Steps, Twice.

Lianne La Havas © Graham Tarrant

It was refreshing to see so many female artists on the bill at this festival – take note mainstream festivals such as Reading and Leeds with their continuous dirge of male dominated line-ups – there was a wealth of female talent throughout the lineup here. Earlier on Friday, Lianne La Havas delighted the crowd dressed in sunflowers, playing a mix of her soulful tunes, with a cover of Radiohead’s Weird Fishes chucked in the mix for good measure. Elsewhere, Holly Humberstone gave off early Avril Lavigne vibes, while Jade Bird delighted the crowd crossing so many genres with a fine mix of pop, americana and country.

Jade Bird © Graham Tarrant

To make the point that women can fill any festival bill, Georgia blew away the Land of the Saints stage single-handedly with her solo drumming and singing combo, while Mahalia filled the tent with her mix of R&B and soul.

As well as music, as the name suggests, the beauty of Boardmasters is its surfing connections. During the day, if musically nothing floats your boat (or board), Fistral Beach is a stone throw (or skim) away. Hosting the UK’s biggest surf competition, the BFGoodrich Longboard-open and Animal-open were exhilarating to watch, with the pro’s catching awe-inspiring air on the waves, and the occasional wipeout for pushing it to the limit.

© Graham Tarrant

The sun shown again on Saturday morning. Maisie Peters was a little ray of light encouraging the crowd to shout names of ex’s in anger in cathartic fashion. Fresh from her headline slot at Camp Bestival two weeks’ prior, Becky Hill demonstrated the power of Boardmasters that she could only make it to late-afternoon on this bill. Shamelessly plugging her new album continuously, it was clear many fans would be lapping it up when it is released the following week.

Mercilessly, the crowd surged for Loyle Carner, before Damon Albarn and his Gorillaz made their Cornish debut as headliners on the main stage. Playing hit after hit, with majority of songs coming from their acclaimed Demon Days album, it was incredible to think this is no longer a side project for Damon after over 20 years’ since their debut song, Clint Eastwood.

© Graham Tarrant

The Kooks clashed on the Land of Saints stage with their indie pop. With the sun set for the day, dance lovers headed to the stunning The Point overlooking the coast, where Basement Jaxx drew a huge crowd for their DJ set.

On Sunday after dancing ‘til early hours, Sunday’s mix was even more eclectic. Gentleman’s Dub Club began proceedings in style (despite being a headliner at upcoming Mucky Weekender festival). Sharply dressed in a suit and bow tie, the singer opted for no shoes or socks, presumably off for a dip afterwards.

Local Cornish royalty Katy J Pearson drew a loyal audience in the nearby tent. Later, Goat Girl (with appropriately named lead singer Clottie Cream) are surely a future headline act in the making with their grunge guitar band.

Mercury Music Prize nominee Arlo Parks followed. A definite highlight of the weekend with a huge crowd filling the tent. With so many memorable songs, from Hope, Black Dog and Collapsed in Sunbeams, Arlo truly deserves to win – singing ‘We all have scars, I know it’s hard, you’re not alone’, her songs uplift but contain powerful messages for us all.

So, as if Maisie Peters, Becky Hill, Lianne La Havas, Katy J Pearson, and Arlo Parks powerfully lighting up the bill wasn’t enough, Jorja Smith showed that Queen Bee Beyonce better hold on tight to her crown – Jorja is a worthy contender and an incredibly inspired headline booking to close the festival.

Jorja Smith © Graham Tarrant

Stunningly mesmerising the crowd, it’s truly evident she has been writing songs since she was 11. With so many catchy songs, it was a true festival closing performance, sending everyone home. Be honest, we need more of this elsewhere in summer festivals.

See you at the beach next year!
