Invitation to join the Twig Society

The Twig Society – Gottwood 2011

A festival is at its best when the bonds between people are strong and the sense of purpose is clear. Today the challenges facing festivals are immense. The line ups are overwhelmed by the same old names, the dance tent’s fabric is frayed and the bookings system has betrayed the people. But these problems can be overcome if we party together. In a forest. In Anglesey. It’s not a Big Society that’s needed, it’s a Twig Society.

Some festivals say: ‘give us your ticket and we will sort out all your fun’. We say: real change comes when the people are inspired and mobilised, when thousands of us are fired up to party. Yes this is ambitious. Yes it is optimistic. But in the end all the big name bookings, all the light shows, all the “cleanest toilets” awards are just words without you and your involvement.

How will we revitalise the tired and saturated festival culture unless people stop asking ‘who will book Orbital (again)?’ and start asking ‘what can I do?’ Festivals will change for the better when we all elect to take part, to take responsibility – if we all come together.

Only together can we protect the falafel stand. Mend broken tent poles. Improve our toilets. Only together can we get the cash machine queue moving. Together we can even make the weather better (maybe). And if we can do that, we can do anything. Yes, together we can do anything.

So our invitation today is this: join us, Gottwood, to bread a new kind of festival for Britain.

The Gottwood Manifesto:
– Ensure festival goers macroeconomic stability
– Create a more balanced musical, visual and cultural festival
– Get Britain raving again
– Encourage enterprising collaborations and spontaneity
– Ensure the whole country shares their unique experiences and wise tales
– Reform the toilets, we all deserve better!
– Create a safer camping system that serves the needs of our Twig Society
– Build a greener festival within a greener Britain
