Dot To Dot Festival 2011 – Nottingham

Nottingham was the second stop on the Dot To Dot agenda, and they took over the city's various venues to showcase some briliant acts.

Nottingham is a vibrant city with loads of bars and venues. The festival was made up of 4 venues all with a range of bands to watch.

The day started with us getting our wristbands from the Dot To Dot tent. The wristbands allow you to hop from venue to venue. The bands didn’t start till 1 so it’s a nice time to go exploring.

AlpinesThe first band we did go see was the Alpines from South London. You were quickly taken in by their unique sound and mesmerizing presence on stage. The band had a unique indie sound. The lead singer had an amazing voice that you couldn’t tier of listening to. They played in the Rock City venue which was the main venue for the festival. It also had a basement room were smaller bands played. The Rock City’s main room was large with 3 bars and a balcony view point. Even though it was large, when the bands got in full swing it filled up very quickly.

The next venue was the Rescue Rooms, and as said on a sign approaching the venue it’s up for NME Best Small Venue!. Inside the tiny venue was a long bar and two outside drinking areas. The atmosphere was amazing with it being such a small venue. The band we went to see are called Wolf Gang I had never heard of them before but they had a very big backing from the crowd. Everyone was packed into the venue like sardines it was so busy people were lined up outside. We got a little spot on the balcony were we could just about see. They were worth elbowing through the crowd to get a glimpse of. With their stylish indie sound and the lead singers punching vocals leaving me amazed that I hadn’t heard of them sooner. You could understand why Wolf Gang played in Rescue Rooms as it made them sound vibrant and in your face!

Swimming

After the aftermath of pushing my way out of the Rescue Room’s venue I quickly made my way back down to Rock City to catch Swimming. As we got in to Talbot Street which was closed off for the festival. There were stalls and bars outside, they were also giving away free Kopparberg tasters that seemed to go down well with the festival goers.

Inside Rock City it was already very busy. We wormed our way through to a good spot, were we got to see the last few songs of Swimming, a 5 piece band from Nottingham. It was great to see a band playing in their home town. They lit up the town with brash electronica music like warp techno. This was mixed in with guitars and the striking voice of the lead singer. Swimming are a fantastic group of guys with great song writing skills, which they write from events that have happened in their own life’s.

Ed Sheeran

After it had all calmed down waited patiently for the critically acclaimed Ed Sheeran. The excitement in the venue grew it was the busiest I had seen it all day. After the 30 minutes we waited Ed Sheeran made his way to the stage with his guitar and the determination to please the waiting crowd. Ed layers the sounds from the guitar and his voice by recording them and playing the sounds back adding the vocals, when all combined together gives the feeling of an entire band from just one person and his guitar. Ed Sheeran is just 20 years old, but his style of music flirts between dubstep to hip hop, and sometimes just with his outstanding voice and guitar. He sung his hits like City and A Team which the entire crowd got behind and sang with him. He has a lot of talent and writes songs with a lot of passion which people can relate to.

The Naked and FamousAfter all the fuss and excitement of Ed Sheeran we stayed in the main venue to watch The Naked and Famous, a band tipped to be big this year. The band is from New Zealand and the calming vocals of the lead singer Alisa Xayalith give the band some personality mixing in with the guitarist. It has an electro pop sound which gives the band’s music a lot of depth. The crowd loved this band and knew there music well.

My highlight of the festival has to be The Naked and Famous, a great band with fantastic stage presence.

Overall an awesome festival day out and would recommend to anyone who enjoys watching bands in great venues.

I Am Kloot Interview – Latitude Festival 2011

1 – Who is your ‘must see’ performance at Latitude this year?
I hear Adam Buxton does a very good turn – gotta see that.

2 – Not including items used in your performance, what is your ‘must-have’ festival item?
A skeleton key so i can get into the jcb digger that i sleep in every time i play latitude.

3 – Do you have anything special planned for your performance at Latitude?
We are playing a lot of the songs from our last album – sky at night and our band is an eight piece now instead o f the usual three piece – looking forward to the bigger sound.

4 – If you could have anyone (dead or alive) to introduce you onstage who would it be (and why)?
Bill Hicks – a man of rare insight and a fearless attitude.

5 – If you have been to Latitude before what was your favourite memory, performance or special spot on site?
I enjoyed seeing Nick Cave get tangled in a guitar lead and without looking at it kicked it away as if he was being attacked by a snake. A delicious violence.

6 – Latitude is…
is the festival that all your bloody mates want a guest list for.

Headliners announced for Endorse It In Dorset

The headliners complete an fabulous line-up of alternative and independent artists which mirror the festival’s strong non-corporate ethos. Other notable acts include Zodiac Mindwarp, Banco De Gaia, The Wurzels, Pronghorn, UK Subs, Citizen Fish, The Members, Subgiant. Peter & The Test Tube Babies, Dubmatix, Dan Days and over 50 others across seven stages, and more are being added on a regular basis.

Famous for its family friendly atmosphere and relaxed festival vibe, Endorse It returns after last year’s triumphant sell-out event for its eighth year at Oakley Farm in Sixpenny Handley, Dorset

Festival Entertainment
In addition to the 7 stages hosting live music, entertainment comes from all quarters of the festival site, including the Casino Comedy Club, the Strummerville Campfire, the Pixie Chill field and a large Children’s Area. Completing the events are Scrumpy Sunday (complete with a performance by Cider-drinking legends The Wurzels!), Ladies’ Day and the ‘must-do’ festival experience; live punk karaoke with the world’s premier punk tribute band, Fat Drunk Stupid.

Family Friendly
Endorse it in Dorset is recommended by safeconcerts.com and children of all ages are well catered for. The theme for the children’s area this year is ‘Wild West’ with a dress-up theme for ‘Cowpunks and Indians’, so children of all ages are invited to bring their best Stetson or headdress and get ready for Sunday’s Hoedown.

Endorse it in the Community
Endorse it in Dorset works in close partnership with the local community. This year the local Scout Group is running the festival shop and will receive all profits from it. The festival’s bars serve locally pressed cider and our Endorse It’s own festival ale is brewed by a local brewery.

Tickets
As always, ticket prices are kept as low as possible – at just £78 for an adult weekend ticket including camping. This represents incredible value considering the quantity and quality of entertainment on offer. To maintain the festival’s intimate friendly atmosphere, the capacity is restricted to just 5000 tickets. After last year’s sell out event, festival-goers are advised to purchase tickets well in advance to avoid disappointment.

Tickets are priced at £78 (Adults), £38 (Under 16’s), £10 (Under 10’s). A Family Ticket for 2 Adults & 2 Children is £220. Car parking is £5 and Campervans £30. Booking fees apply.

Laidback Luke Interview – RockNess 2011

You were voted number 17 in the DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJ list in 2010, you must have been ecstatic?

Yes I was! And although we didn’t do any advertising for it and I feel it’s not about being the DJ president of the world, I feel it should be about rocking every gig to the fullest I can and make and play music everyone can enjoy, I did felt a proud telling my parents I ended up in the world DJ top 20 this year. It seems they can actually grab the concept of how far I’ve come now. : )

What does 2011 hold for you?

I’m excited about 2011! I’m all set to launch two big singles with Ministry Of Sound UK and we’re really aiming on a lot of radio and TV play.

My newest track, featuring Wynter Gordon called ‘Speak Up’ will be my first single with them after ‘Show Me Love’. And after that I’ll

have a single featuring Example. It’s looking really good! Obviously I’ll still keep touring my ass off and I’m very excited about my collaboration with Cream. Doing more of my Super You&Me party residences at Cream Amnesia Ibiza this summer as well as hosting my own area at Creamfields.

To celebrate that, I’m puttin out a Super You&Me mix compilation CD with them soon too!

What can we expect from your set at RockNess 2011?

I always try and bring a lot of energy in my sets as well as diversity. I get bored very quickly and I love throwing curveballs at the crowd to surprise the hell out of them ha ha. Obviously I’ll bring the tracks I’m known for too as well as the Laidback Luke Bootleg machine.

I’m always making new bootlegs as I love doing them and make proper battle weapons that work for my sets.

Will you be staying to enjoy the whole weekend, and what are the parts of the festival are you looking forward to?

It’s a big line up! I’ll need to see if I have time to stick around though. My schedule is always jam packed with touring

and I’m always on some kind of deadline. I believe the RockNess festival is one out of four gigs I’m doing that weekend in the whole of Europe.

Your opening Cream in Ibiza this year at Amnesia, how does that feel?

It’s fantastic and a great honor! We started working with Cream in Ibiza last year and it was a smashing success.

The amount of support I get from the UK is amazing and I’m excited to do it bigger, better and more this year!

Who is your favourite artist/DJ at the moment?

I absolutely adore the DJ called Gaslamp Killer. If you don’t know him, you should really google him!

To me he has everything a DJ needs. An unbelievable stage performance, manic DJ techniques and a choice of very weird music that tingles my imagination.

What do you thin will be the ‘Summer 2011’ song?

Good question! It’s always hard to predict. I haven’t heard it yet to be honest. We’ll see!

What are your plans for 2011?

Lay back and enjoy the crazy rollercoster!

You have worked with some big names such as David Guetta, Steve Angelo and Axwell, what was that like?

It was great working with all of them. I really like collaborating and making new music that comes from a good connection in the studio. Rest assure there’s always new stuff on the way!

What is your favourite song and will you be playing it at the festival?

My favorite song of all time is Phoenix ‘Love Like Sunset’. I always imagine my whole life flashing by when I hear that song. It takes me on a trip. Unfortunately it’s far from being dance music so I’d probably never play it.

Laidback Luke Performs at RockNess on the 11th June 2011. For more information visit www.rockness.co.uk

One of the most exciting aspects to what has been happening is the organisers are thrilled to bits about the new venue Houghton Hall. Ms Dynamite, Yasmin and more announced for RockNess

The Year of the Ness is so close you can feel it and the countdown is well and truly on. Today the good times just keep on rolling as more incredible acts are confirmed for the already heaving-with-quality line up.

Ms DyanmiteOn the cusp of once again blowing up the urban music scene, and the RockNess Main Stage, is MS DYNAMITE. Massively important in her genre with strong connections to the underground and a number of notable cutting edge collaborations to her credit, expect an amazing live show and stunning return to form. As Artwork of MAGNETIC MAN, who also play RockNess this year comments “the energy she brings is unreal. MS DYNAMITE is one of those people who puts her own stamp on everything she does. She’s just got it. Her amazing stage presence helps too.

Flying the flag for the very best breakthrough talent from the Scottish Highlands, JAMES MACKENZIE & THE AQUASCENE take to the RockNess Main Stage for an unmissable performance. This Inverness four piece, fronted by James MacKenzie and supported by the very best in string accompaniment, evoke the finest moments of Damien Rice and Crosby, Stills & Nash yet maintain an originality that is melodic, engaging and uplifting.

YasminHot on the heels of her support slot on EXAMPLE’s headline UK tour, the gorgeous and talented YASMIN will no doubt reacquaint with the British rapper at RockNess as she joins the bill in this year’s new Rock n Roll Circus Arena. Having DJd for many big artists including N.E.R.D. and with recent musical forays including Devlin and Labrinth, YASMIN is one of the hottest new names on the scene so check her out.

Leading the charge of a new generation of Swedish pop stars, NIKI AND THE DOVE combine epic choruses with Eastern European drum styles to make soaring songs dripping with euphoria. Intriguing and dramatic, a visit to the Rock n Roll Circus is recommended to see what Dazed & Confused hails as “brilliant pop”.  In contrast and in keeping with the eclectic best new music vibe of Rock n Roll Circus, it’ll be a flamboyant retro rock takeover as the quite excellent TOM ODELL extols his utterly charming, and at times operatic brand of original pop.

MIKE DIGNAM’s dynamic vocals and energetic compositions bely his tender nineteen years. Two self penned, self recorded and self produced albums in, the second of which is set for release on his self created label this summer, and a number of successful tour support slots under his belt, catch this impressive talent in the Rock n Roll Circus while you can.

The beats take centre stage in the Goldenvoice Arena for the duration of DJ and remixer ZEDD’s set as he prepares to unleash a radical and super catchy soundtrack that buzzes and hums. Definitely one to watch as collaborations with Gaga, Skrillex, Fatboy Slim and Armand van Helden testify.
Having slowly seduced audiences for the past year with their sweeping and relentlessly rocking soundscapes, Glasgow’s STRAWBERRY OCEAN SEAlook destined for greatness.  A personal invitation by James Allan to open for GLASVEGAS on their current tour has seen the fast rising four piece garner rave reviews and RockNess welcomes them to the bill.

Festival favourite THOMAS GANDEY (aka CAGED BABY) is back with exciting new material that captures his tough techno and sexy nu disco trademark and is aimed squarely at the dance floor. All round legend GRAEME PARK returns too for more spreading of the gorgeous, uplifting garage and house music gospel and the ROCKNESS CEILIDH ALL STARS kick the weekend party into gear with a blast of banging ceilidh music.
Elsewhere, RockNess is pleased to announce that some of the most exciting DJ talent from Inverness and The Scottish Highlands is set to keep the party rockin’ all weekend including  ABRAHAM THUNDERWOLF, POLYMATH, FILTH, THE LED, SOUNDCLASH DJs and AUDIOLIFE.

Finally, the party loving, fashion-tastic WE OWN creative collective make their RockNess debut on site with an exclusive retail showcase of their cool, coveted WE OWN merchandise. What’s more, the WE OWN team have lined up Dutch DJ wunderkind DEM SLACKERS to spin his magic in a very special set in HOWARD’S END.  With DEM SLACKER’s tracks supported by Crookers, Steve Aoki, Fake Blood, Don Rimini, Sinden, Tommy Sunshine, Mightyfools and many more, and with tours in Hungary, Belgium, the Netherlands and the UK already confirmed, electro stardom beckons.

Festival Director Jim King comments “We’re really pleased to announce these latest acts. JAMES MACKENZIE & THE AQUASCENE are a really talented local band that I can’t wait to hear live, YASMIN is going to be huge and it’s really exciting to have MISS DYNAMITE. We’ve also got the cream of the Highland club scene to rock Howard’s End into the early hours. Howard’s thinking of pulling out his dub step set so the guys had better be on top of the game. There’s now officially only 2 weeks to go until the start of the summer!”
